I might be too strung out on compliments
Overdosed on confidence
Started not to give a Bleep and stopped fearing the consequence
Drinking every night because we drink to my accomplishments
Faded way too long I'm floating in and out of consciousness
And they sayin' I'm back, I'd agree with that
I just take my time with all this shit, I still believe in that
I had someone tell me I fell off, ooh I needed that
And they wanna see me pick back up, well where'd I leave it at
I know I exaggerated things, now I got it like that
Tuck my napkin in my shirt, cause I'm just mobbin' like that
You know good and well that you don't want a problem like that
You gone make someone around me catch a body like that
No, don't do it, (aye) please don't do it, (aye) cause one of us goes in
And we all go through it (aye)
Drizzy got the money, so Drizzy gonna pay it
Those my brothers, I ain't even gotta say it
That's just something they know

Interestingly, somewhere in the deep recesses of my memory I remember grappling with the above statement. Winwood postulates that Man as an individual is entirely unpredictable, but becomes a mathematical certainty as a group, a very reasonable assertion. He then went on to state that Man is the offspring of necessity, and that for me presented a problem because first we have to define what this "necessity" is.

If this “necessity” simply means that which "could not be otherwise", then it is not difficult to understand that, that necessity must be one of the progenitors of the physical world. Are we therefore to consider “necessity” as an explanation of imperfection? In other words is it of “necessity” that we are imperfect? Or do we ascribe to his concept of necessity a more metaphysical dimension given the author's atheistic tendencies?

I go with the view of the Neoplatonists, that Man is of mixed birth being the offspring of a union of necessity and intellect wherein intellect prevailed over necessity by persuading it to direct most of the things towards what is best and the result of this subjugation of necessity to persuasion was the initial formation of this universe.

"Mathematical certainty" > precisely the phrase used by Sherlock Holmes when he referenced Winwood to Dr. Watson in "The Sign of Four".

Good take. Although I would have preferred if you had given concrete examples as well rather than dwell extensively on abstracts. And I do not think Winwood's assertion pertains to the physical world, but rather that it tends toward the metaphysical (Though it could be interpreted in both ways). Note that he preambled 'offspring of necessity' by first calling the individual man a 'free agent". I think that by "free agent" he was hinting at libertarianism or free will.

I agree that the first half of Winwood's assertion talks about the unpredictability of the individual man when he is isolated from the pack. The second half I have interpreted to mean that man is "an offspring of moral compulsions", or in the much broader sense, "an offspring of compulsive habits". I also see a bit of behaviorist necessitarianism in the second half of Winwood's statement.
For instance, while the actions of a socially isolated and individualistic man might prove to be as random as where a flipped coin might land, the behaviour of a man in a social group on the other hand is much more patterned and could be logically guessed since man being a creature of imitation is most likely to adopt the ways, mores, statutes and whatnot of the social environment he finds himself e.g. he would go to school because it is what everybody does, he would wear trousers because it is what everybody does, he would get married because it is what everybody does, etc.

LITTLE sex education talk _emphasis on little. The talk given to toddlers is a whole lot different and it's advisable. I'm sure you read all the cases of child molestation, these people take advantage of a child's naivety.

It shouldn't be graphic, sometimes they set the pace with their questions, they ask about their body parts. They ask how mummy got pregnant. If you have ever taken care of kids _you would be familiar with their inquisitive nature. They deserve age-appropriate answers.

Other times, the parent would have to take it up themselves. Teach them proper names of their body parts, teach them not to touch another person's own (mummy and daddy play _you should at least be familiar with this one). Teach them no one is allowed to touch their private parts, neither are they allowed to go about stroking their genitals (I've seen little boys do this severally).

Lots of kids get molested before the age of 10 she plans teaching them these little things. As a child begins to talk, it's very pertinent. That way, they can always report back to you if anything goes against what you taught them.

This is what you should have asked, not if I am nuts. Learn how to talk_life isn't that serious.

You are too sensitive.

You need to purge your mind 'my friend', this debate needs commonsense, not poetry.

We are social animals, we all have the social responsibility to be nice to people around us.

I can tell you for a fact that only two categories of humans (Nigerians) adopt the words "weight loss and weight gain"

1. weight gain: is mostly used in our environment as a compliment, evidence of good living.

2. weight loss: whether it involves a dead relative or not, this word is used by people who truly cares or attempt to show some concern.

The same way we go about complimenting people's attires not minding whether they feel terrible is just the same way some will take offence on compliments regarding their body or weight.

Whether you see the meaning in my post or not, I would at this stage have to agree with you since the argument is leading to nowhere.

You have nothing to say and don't try to deflect attention from the emptiness of your argument. Poetry my foot.

It's funny how you should say that this debate should be premised on common sense and yet your remarks thus far are seriously lacking in common sense.

First, you veered off topic when you said that you would rather not accept "society's standard of attractiveness". One would think by that statement–although terribly off topic–that you were some maverick or non-conformist. Yet the so-called person, the so-called non-conformist who does not accept society's standard made these declarations:

"1. weight gain: is mostly used in our environment as a compliment, evidence of good living.

2. weight loss: whether it involves a dead relative or not, this word is used by people who truly cares or attempt to show some concern."

The phrase "mostly used in our environment" negates your pretentious claims to being a non-conformist. What kind of non-conformist tailors his ways to what is prevalent in society even if that which is prevalent is wrong?

As I have said before, you are emotionally unintelligent – your antecedents prove this. You are also pretentious, and confuzzled, and unnecessarily belligerent.

PS: When next you see your boss' wife, ensure you make an observation about her weight loss.

If my memory of Catholic doctrine serves me right, I know that even the Catholic Church pins down the 'age of reasoning' to 8 years old. It is taken as given by the Catholic Church that anything a child does before his eighth-year birthday is not conscientious and so cannot be called a sin. It is your husband who has erred. He is guilty of the sin of omission

But let's shunt the religious mumbo-jumbo aside. Even in the secular sense, do you think an innocent child of five can make sense of a video of a man and woman having sex? I don't think any child is that precocious especially if that happens to be the first time he or she is exposed to such visual material. It is not the child's fault and you should not beat him. Beating him would only attach emotional significance to the episode and reinforce it in his memory. However, if you don't beat him then you can rely on the passage of time to efface the memory of the event from his mind. It's a simple memory trick that wise parents have used to re-programme memories of children who have seen what they ought not to have seen.

But just as someone suggested, err on the side of caution by keeping a close watch on him (even though I do not think it is quite necessary). I'm sure your son would watch the new Power Rangers movie and forget all about it in no time.

Please calm down, children like phone _these modern ones only like big phones, give them nokia-torch, they won't collect cheesy.

Talk your husband. The positive side is, he isn't like some husbands that lock their phones and even the network connection. The negative side is, bobo saw what he shouldn't. Calm down with the positive and tell him what happened, he loves his kids as much as you do _it was most likely an oversight. He should activate his auto-lock.

You guys should call the lil boy and engage him, no overreaction, no beating. If a good job has been done regulating what he watches and who he associates with, he won't understand the basics of sex just yet.

Simply tell him there are some videos we shouldn't be watching, they are not good for our health. Your concerns are normal, but the greater problem lies in your reaction and how you handle it, don't make it sound like he did the unthinkable. Since he likes pressing phone, get him his own tablet, download kiddies content for him, he should press as he likes.

Have you had those little sex-education talk with him? Don't be like those parents that wait till they see you playing mummy & daddy, before they have that talk.

Sex education for a five-year old boy? Are you nuts?

I think you're just a difficult person to live with. People like you are the reasons I barely give compliments anyway.

When people compliment or say something about my weight, height, look, etc., I assume they're only trying to be nice, I don't read too much into it or take it too much to heart. TO THE BE5T OF MY KNOWLEDGE, it is socially acceptable by many. Imagine seeing a classmate you last met in 1999 today... You expect her to maintain her shape? You guys are simply difficult and complicated.

Nigeria is not such a difficult place to live in. Sometimes when I walk pass some motor parks, I hear words like "yellow". That's typically how an average Nigerian transporter attracts a light-complexioned person.

If you decide to take everything to heart, you won't live too long. By the way, no one is responsible for someone else's anxieties.

To the best of your knowledge? How risible!
Pray, have you ever heard of perspectivism and its teachings on the flawed limitations of a single individual's take or opinion on an issue? If you have not then have you by chance come across the "Lucretius underestimation"? No? Titus Lucretius Carus–the Roman poet and philosopher–called a fool the man who claims that the highest mountain he has ever seen and the highest mountain in the world are one and the same. I am not calling you a fool, but Lucretius is calling you a fool for thinking the "best of your knowledge" can pass as a universal verity.

Even on this thread alone, there is a preponderance of people who are against overt allusion to a person's body weight, so when you say it is "socially acceptable to many'' I'm inclined to wonder who those "many people" are. You know what they say about statistics? 97% of them are made up on the spot.

Also, that I think making a remark about a person's body weight is gauche and inept, especially when that person is not of a close intimacy, does not mean that I would consider it a slight on my person should someone make an observation about my weight. It is quite silly of you to conclude that the only reason I am opposed to such crude behaviour must be because I am sensitive to such observations myself. Look at how simplistic your mind runs.

If intelligence to you means accepting the society's and Instagram queen's slender standard of attractiveness, then I don't want to be "intelligent".

BTW Mr Intelligence, Yinka Ayefele's condition is called a deformity. If adding weight to you is a deformity, then I'm sorry, I can't help you.

Asking you to show some discretion during a conversation is not asking you to accept society's "standard of attractiveness". Your adeptness at misconstruing me beggars my comprehension.

It is common sense to know that making allusions–however innocuous your intentions might be–to a person's body mass or physical appearance is hardly the wisest nor the safest conversational path to tread, seeing as you might be unaware of the circumstances and emotional triggers tied to the change in the body weight of the individual. Suppose you made a remark about a person's weight and suppose it reminded him or her of a recent death in the family–probably he or she has grown lean or obese from grief. There are a million and one things to compliment a person about, so why insist on pointing out the obvious by telling a person just how fat or just how thin he or she is?

I am inclined to call you a psychopath but even psychopaths are pastmasters at feigning emotion and empathy–something I suspect that you're incapable of.

Another thing, it is called 'analogy' not because it is meant to give a perfect representation of something but because it shows similarities, however far-fetched, between two things. I used the condition of Yinka Ayefele only as an analogy.

It is not about being healthy or not. Nobody is 100% healthy, the average healthy human being has millions of micro-organisms and worms.

The problem here is that most women find it hard to accept their bodies. I have accepted my body and whatever anyone says about it would not be termed offensive.

I am a bit 'fair' in complexion and I have seen many women droll over dark guys... you know what? I don't give a flying fck because I like my body and I won't trade it for anything. If more women try to accept their bodies, the excessive concern and worries over this weight issue will reduce.

Why, you must be among those 50 emotionally unintelligent Nigerians that I made mention of in my post. This has hardly anything to do with acceptance of one's own body as you preach and more to do with proper conversational etiquettes.

Yinka Ayefele has long come to terms with his paraplegic condition, and from the little I have seen of him in his music videos I should think he feels fairly comfortable in his skin despite his fate as a cripple. Does it make any sense then if you happen upon Yinka Ayefele at some random event and the first thing you do is to cast a remark on the condition of his legs because you expect him to have accepted his body? You would agree that would indeed be a gauche and uncivilized thing to do.

It is also rather narrow-minded and unprogressively chauvinistic of you to trivialize and whittle this down to a mere gender idiosyncrasy. The issue of self-image and self-perception has an all-encompassing ontological reach that cuts across both genders.

Very offensive,
It tends to make people unnecessarily self conscious,
The person already knows whether he or she has added or lost weight. You don't need to say so.

Furthermore, whether the person has added or lost weight doesn't concern a soul, find better none offensive ways to compliment someone, if you feel the person is looking good, you just say that.

No need for the extra "you've added or lost weight"
ibkayee:
It can be tactless, you never know what someone is going through, it could be a health issue for example. Not everyone takes it as a compliment so if you aren't asked, best thing to do is to keep unsolicited opinions to yourself

Guys that are overly concerned about their looks will care. If you keep telling a man, he is growing pot belly _he'll care. If you tell it to a guy who has some issues resulting in the weight gain _he'll care.

They may not react to it like some females, but they will think about it when they get home.

We guys definitely do, but of course, some obsess over such things more than others. Anyone who says otherwise should look to Michael Jackson as a case study. This was a man who grew up detesting himself due to the constant cruel remarks that his father, Joe, made about his nose.

Remark to a guy that he has put on considerable weight or that he looks terribly gaunt and he will definitely turn it over in his mind especially if the remark is coming from someone whose opinion he highly values and respects. Some might even take it as earnest as a remark pointing out their balding hair. The topic of self-image is a nasty preoccupation that tends to obtrude itself on the thoughts of every human being, even when one does not wish to dwell on it. It's a reflexive habit.

Mssrs HopefulLandlord and Sarassin, I hope to tax your intellects a triffle bit.

William Winwood Reade in his book, “The Martyrdom of Man”, declared, and I quote verbatim:

Pray, what do you two gentlemen understand by this singular and interesting pronouncement? Be kind enough to give examples to aid in illumining whatever your interpretations might be.

People are so predictable or maybe it is just me that's becoming a laureate in this human psychology business. I was expecting someone to say this. That is to–in a fit of over-zealous sentimentality–call the deceased a 'martyr'.

Except that she is not a martyr. Not even remotely so. She is only a victim; an unfortunate casaulty of a war – and that is because her death was needless, and I would also say—at the risk of seeming insensitive–purposeless.

The woman I'm sure did not think the Biafra cause to be worth her life, so why dragoon martyrdom on someone who probably never asked to be a martyr?
That bullet was meant for Nnamdi Kanu, not the poor woman. I wonder whether these leaders feel the slightest compunction knowing fully well that their actions portend ghastly consequences for their supporters. My educated guess is that they don't. I only wish the sheeple–the blind hierophants who are more Catholic than the Pope and more Moslem than Mohammed–would sooner come to terms with that.

In as much as I would love to share your optimism, I really do think Adaku's death was in vain.

It's a good thing that you have now seen potential in Paulinho. He is formidable, a fine marker, can get dirty in order to get the job done, and what he lacks in vision he more than makes up for it by being a midfielder who scores.
