HealthThe Act And Art Of Surrogacy by david102(op): 10:44pm On Jun 13, 2020
The Act and Art of Surrogacy

I stare at the window pane, watching the rain droplets pitter-patter as they trickle in a sensuous way down to the earth.
I say a silent prayer for inspiration to write.
It's been gone for a while now.
In the name of making money for myself and for familia upkeep, I have ignored writing.
Tonight, I pick up my notepad, thinking of what to write and suddenly I remember a news I covered for the media company I work for.
It was on Surrogacy. How babies have been abandoned by their parents in hospitals due to the travel ban, all over the world. The novel coronavirus currently ravaging the world has limited the movement of people in and out of their country. And for this, it is impossible for these parents to go pick up their children after all they've been through.
I do not want to leave my readers in confusion. So, I shall delve into the act and art of Surrogacy.
Surrogacy is the treatment of fertility in which a woman carries and delivers a baby for another couple. Eggs from the intended mother is removed and fertilized with the sperm of the intended father. This embryo or fertilized egg is then transferred to a surrogate.

The surrogate carries the child in her womb and gives birth for the intended couple.
Surrogacy is of two kinds, the Traditional surrogacy and Gestational Surrogacy.
A traditional surrogate is a woman who gets artificially inseminated with the father's sperm. She then carries the baby and delivers it for a couple to raise. She is the baby's biological mother because it was her egg that was fertilized by the father's sperm.
In the case of gestational surrogacy, a technique called "In vitro fertilization" (IVF) makes it possible to gather eggs from the mother, fertilize them with sperm from the father and place the embryo into the Uterus of a gestational surrogate. She carries the baby until birth. She has no genetic ties to the child because it wasn't her egg that was used. She is not the biological but only the birth mother.

This surrogate is like a productive powerhouse, a channel from which a child emerges.
Statistics reveals that about 7.8 million women around the world face problems relating to conceiving a baby.
In the US alone, about 750 babies are born each year using this method.
The success rate of surrogacy stands at 75% and once the surrogate is pregnant, the success rate for a healthy birth is as high as 95%.
Like most decisions we take that always come with risks, the act of surrogacy has its in abundance.
I only wonder what this couple and the surrogate go through in the process of bringing a baby into the world.
Two women from different worlds, probably perfect strangers or not.
One agreeing to give the other a priceless gift, a child. The other putting her trust and hope on another woman, to help her bring a child into the world. Nothing could be more beautiful than this.

The sorrow at parting for the surrogate is a topic for another day. Saying goodbye would hurt so much. This is why it's advisable for both parties not to hear from each other after the birth of the child.
At the end of it all, one thing stands out- no one has it all. A time comes in our lives when we need someone to be our miracle. I hope you find them.

CultureCyber Bullying by david102(op): 9:40am On May 26, 2020
Andrea Lopez was a Mexican Immigrant attending high school at the Riverdale Collegiate Institute in Canada. Having successfully migrated to Canada, she thought the best was yet to come for her.
Andrea had a problem in school and it was the inability to blend in and the girls in her class did not help matters.
They were pretty little savages in cute mini skirts, strutting the hallway, always the centre of attention.
Andrea was always at the middle of their bullying spree.

Somehow, they got to know she was living with her drunk of a father in a shack called home.
Andrea had to do all sorts of odd jobs to balance the cost of her education and family upkeep.
These bullies made life miserable and unbearable for her in the school, the streets and surprisingly, the Internet.
They frequently threw jibes at her made fun of her poor dress sense, different accent and her geeky-looking appearance.

The only friend Andrea had was Whitney. She confided in her but something was missing in Andrea's life- perhaps it was the absence of a mother.
Andrea was a walking volcano, filled with molten rage, waiting to erupt.

To express overwhelming emotional distress, Andrea would ocassionally cut herself in different places. Antidepressants were always at her bedside.

And so it was, that Andrea's body was found, washed up on the sea shore.
Surveillance footage revealed that at exactly 11:00pm the previous day, a lone figure walked towards the beach. It didn't stop at the edge of the sea shore, it didn't stop to inhale the night breeze nor did it stop to listen to the conversation the waves made, perhaps they would have saved her.
Like one in a trance, she moved into the water, disappearing from sight.

Cyber bullying is a form of bullying using electronic media. This is also known as Online bullying, increasingly common among teenagers as the world keeps advancing in technology.
This act takes place on the internet, on social media using digital devices like cellphones, computers, tablets and other electronic devices.
It involves sending, posting or sharing hurtful and negative content about someone. The aim is to hurt the victim and cause them the highest form of human degradation.

With the dominance of social media, where everyone sees everything posted on social media from any part of the world, posting hurtful content about someone can be seen by millions of people almost immediately and this could cause permanent damages to the victim's reputation.

The effects of Cyber bullying are dire and very unpleasant. The victim experiences anxiety, fear, depression, low self-esteem, emotional and psychological distress, etc. Sometimes, they tend to struggle academically as some would eventually be school dropouts.
When Cyber bullying occurs, it is advised that the victim cuts themselves off from social media. But for teens, this would mean going incommunicado with friends and family. These electronic devices are one of the most important ways they communicate with others. Going off would make them feel secluded, cut off from the world.

Andrea's story may be a concocted one but very much likely to be the case of some unfortunate victims.

Research has shown that approximately 34% of students report experiencing cyber bullying during their lifetime (Hinduja & Patchim, 2015).
Approximately 18% of youth report self-harming at least once, impacting I in 4 girls and 1 in 10 boys. (Monto, McRee & Deryck, 2018).
Current research suggests that harbouring the thoughts to commit suicide and attempts among adolescents have nearly doubled since 2008( Plemmons et all., 2018), making suicide the 2nd leading cause of death for individuals 10-34 years of age(CDC, 2017).
For those in the throes of Cyber bullying, it is imperative you know that your life is yours to live.Facing the issue head-on is the way to go. Come to terms with the situation, change the way you view yourself and you would be on your way to recovery.
Be patient with yourself because there would always be light at the end of the tunnel.

A man with vision won't be earning 30K? 9ja is hopelessly hard now and even guys with good degrees are teaching excessive workloads in private schools while earning 30k. We all have to start somewhere in this harsh economy. There's not enough good jobs to pass round. Many graduates are doing manual labourer jobs at construction sites. let me ask you, how much should a man earn before getting married?
30k is not the point but a man of vision, a man that is a goal achiever. I meant be earning 150k and still be broke. The point is every man or woman should aim for greater heights and never settle for less

CultureThe Name "LAGOS" As In Lagos State Is PORTUGUESE by david102(op): 8:58pm On Dec 24, 2019
Names of Lagos
Lagos means "lakes" in Portuguese, the language of the first European immigrants known to visit the settlement, then already inhabited by the Awori and Bini . From the first contacts with the region until the early 20th century, another Portuguese name for the city that was interchangeably used was Onim , finally abandoned in favor of Lagos. Another theory is that Lagos was named after the city of the same name in Portugal which at the time was a major maritime hub for seafaring activity on the Atlantic Ocean. Although Lagos translates to "lakes" in Portuguese, there's no lake in the proximity of Lagos; Lagos is an Island. "Lagos" comes from the Portuguese word "Lagodikuramo", (meaning "Calm-water"wink. Consistent with the serenity of coastal water. And, as usual practice, it was the British colonialist Lord Lugard who suggested abbreviating the name to "Lagos" as to rhyme with their tonal preference.
