that is the oral narrative the Ughoton people have, I think someone quoted ling roth in time past on this issue, when I lay my hands on it, I would post
It seems you choose what to believe, anything that suites your thinking is okay to you. There is no general consensus among the Ughoton people that Ekhaladeran died there. Roth quoting it doesn't make it true.

Ekhaladeran did not die in Ughoton. and your assumption that Benin (Igodomigodo) was conquered and a yoruba ruler imposed on them is utter foolishness.

what do you want me to think, since it is proven Ekaladerhan died at Ughoton, an outright invite of a stranger would not make sense. The situation of a foreign culture (the Oba title already insinuate it is foreign)in another land most times involves blood and war- there is a missing link in history samuel
What is the proof Ekhaladeran died at Ughoton? another Yoruba narrative

Can you see how you are making assumptions to support your narrative. You are no longer convinced that there was an invitation but an attack that defeated the original Benin people, are you really serious right now? Not even the Alaafin and the Ooni went this far. Yet you claimed to be searching for the truth and defending Benin history.
He is confused.

UGBE634:
I would not tilt to the fact that they invited a stranger, the thing now is that Ekaladerhan seem to have died in Ughoton. That is why I am opining there seem to have been a conquest In history-the missing link. Possibly an attack was orchestrated from Usen after they migrated from Ife and stayed there for a while.
Who told you Ekhalderan died in Ughoton? why don't you think he journeyed from Ughoton due to threat of attacks and assassination from the palace he had problems with? He left Ughoton and journeyed to Ife where he became great. That may be the missing link you are searching for.

I am up for truth and not partisan argument, why is the epicenter of the Edo Civilization using Oba instead of Ogie

If there is anything we can seem to take home is the fact that the Oba seem to be more western than anything else

The Oba title more than not seem intuitively not an Indigenous title, it is not what I can stomach, it is not what I have been able to digest.

To me there seem to have been a launch in attack and maybe the aborigines in Benin city were conquered and the Oba stool and title situated. That invitation does not really make sense to me, there is a missing link in history that is yet not properly explained

It would seem that the people migrated to the Usen area and an attack was launched at the centre to defeat those in charge and certainly take over power. That seem to account for the warlike nature of the ruling dynasty
You seem confused.. what invitation doesn't make sense to you?
is it the invitation for ife to send someone to rule Benin or the invitation for Ekhalederan's descendant to return home to rule?

The Oba title isn't much of an issue. It could be of Edo origin or Yoruba origin. It could also be that Ekhalederan's descendant decided to introduce the title his father used in ife since that is the culture he was raised in too.

The only thing that doesn't make sense and a foolish assumption is that Benin was attacked by ife/usen or that Benin (an already established and civilized people) will go to ife to ask for a foreigner to come rule them.

Him alone or as part of team comprising people of varying age, etc.?

Was his pace of travel also slow—as mentioned in the text about the Bini ambassadors?

Was his trip like the traditional one from Uromi (Ishan) Benin city which took an average of 5 months?

My comment is actually for those who have the ability to make use of their brain.

Peace!

Cc: Abohboy
Try reason properly before you post your rubbish..
A messenger sent on an errand to ife will not travel at slow pace and from your unreasonable calculations will not take 4 yrs (round trip to deliver and bring back an answer).

TAO11:
Regarding the 20 moons’ journey, Ife was in fact 20 moons’ walking trip away from Benin. Make Sure To Read It:

Summary:
(1) The “traditional” walking distance from Benin to Ile-Ife took an average of 17.4 months

(2) 17.4 months are equivalent to 530.178 days (i.e. 17.4 months * 30.47days per month).

(3) 530.178 days are equivalent to 19.4 moons (i.e. 530.178 days / 27.322 days per moon).

In conclusion, the facts and figures turn out to prove that the “traditional” trip from Benin city to Ile-Ife took an average of 19.4 moons.

This answer is therefore astoundingly accurate for all practical intents and purpose.

From this again, we see that Ife is indeed the place of the Ogané of the Portuguese text. The Bini informant knew exactly what he was talking about.

Peace! cheesy
Rubbish.
Too much Benin wahala has turned your brain upside down..
Distance from Gombe to Abuja is far greater than the distance from Benin to Ife. It took just about 3 weeks for that Buhari supporter to trekk Gombe to Abuja and you are here calculating rubbish maths..

"Overview of 19th Century Wars and Turbulence on Ado-Ekiti:
No part of Ekiti was spared the agony of imperialist invasions… The rampaging Benin armies sacked Ogotun, Aramoko, some subordinate communities of Ijero, Ado communities such as Are, Afao, Ugbo (now Ilu) Omoba and Agbado and settled a large percentage of the haul of captives therefrom in Ikere, their garrison post.
Benin armies constantly waged wars of external aggressions on Ekitiland and other communities in different parts of old Ondo State in their quest for territorial expansion and control, among others. A good reference point is the Ado-Ikere relations that resulted to Benin pillage and attacks on Ado-Ekiti on several occasion. Olomola (1984:2-3) noted that Benin armies invaded parts of Ado kingdom a few times between 1500 and 1815.. Olomola further asserted that the Ewi actually devise a strategy of evacuating his capital city so that the Benin armies would not disturb the Ewi and the rest of his people in their new site.
Odo which was, before the Benin invasion a town of considerable size, broke up as the people sought the safety of rocky and forest recesses and Uyin and Igede lost part of their population in their fight against Benin in 1815.
The development of the Ado Kingdom was seriously affected by external invasion. These resulted in series of demographic upheavals with settlements constantly moved from one site to another. The most serious of these external invasions were by the "Edo" of Benin. They attacked and destroyed many settlements…in the Ado Kingdom… The Edos were invited by Ogoga, the third time the Edos were so invited to settle the quarrel between Ado and Ikere. The line of action they resolved to adopt was to bring all the villages under the ewi to Ikere, settle them there and in this way Ikere would be equal or even bigger than Ado. Ado would then be afraid of Ikere. The Benin soldiers came and sent words to the Ewi Aroloye… He refused to surrender. He did not in any way show that he was not ready for fight. Every town or village under him except Ijan were prepared to fight…
Every town or village under him (Ewi) except Ijan were prepared to fight… The Benin soldiers stormed Igbara-Odo and Ilawe and took them. At this time, Ado town had been vacated. Aroloye took the people to a place called Oke Oko Axis between Ifaki and Iworoko. Most of the gods Ado worshipped on that side: Olua at Eyio, Obanifon at Esure and Are, Ogbese and Orisala at Iworoko. The soldiers pitched their camps near Uyin (Iyin)…Ogbesi Okun, the then Oluyin …was conquered and killed. They proceeded to Igede, Awo and Esure and took them. The inhabitants of Igede then uder Okiribiti were driven in a north-easternly direction to a place called Oke Asha…Edo troops then marched to Iworoko…The soldiers entered Are…The same fate befell Afao. They were all taken to Ikere. The soldiers moved to Igbemo …entered Igbo-Omoba (now Ilu-Omoba)…The soldiers left Aisegba for Agbado and without delay took it and evacuated the people. Agbado was the last place under the Ewi. With the conquest, of Agbado, the soldiers seemed to have finished their job…’
Ewi Idagunmodo (1696-1710), Ewi Okinbaloye Aritawekun (1710-1722), Ewi Amono Ola (1722-1762), Ewi Afunbiowo (1762-1781), Ewi Akulojuorun (1781-1808), Ewi Aroloye (1808-1836) who reigned at Ado but were attacked successively by Benin hordes…‘During the reign of Ewi Aroloye, Ado-Ewi’s kingdom witnessed massive dislocation across the terrain as town dwellers and villagers ran for safety in different directions. Many of the captives from Iworoko, Are, Afao, Ugboomoba (now Ilumoba) and Agbado were taken to Ukere by Benin invaders’. This is not embattled, this is total defeat, tell this history too, where come remain for the Ekiti and Ondo. Uromi Oye!!!! EDORODION!!!! I go die oo!!! I go die oo!!!!!!EDO!!!!! EDO!!!!!! Iye o!!!!! How does your 1KB brain come up with the idea of “bYpAsSeD” when Esan is not sandwiched in between Owan & Etsako, and when Owan & Etsako are both before Esan approaching from the north towards the south??

Now when you talk of the Roman empire, their remnants can still be found in most parts of Africa and in Europe, one example in Africa is "The Great Alexandria" seaport of North Africa and more.

In Britain we have many that can be mentioned, and the Britons are proud that Rome is part of their history, followed with France, and the rest.

Now, the Bini people claim they ruled and ruled large expanse of land. They have no common cultural attire with the Igbo, language none, festival none, and all...that's one.

Secondly, the Oba seemed like he was thirsty to have more subjects under him, and as a king his worthy for that. The east was rich with not only resources that could be used for the Obas expansive agenda for that time, but people that can be applied to the military, why did he forsake them? The east, very well seems untouched to your Oba, in which you claim Igbos was under his rule.

The Obas main interest was the west, but I guess he tried but was resisted by them westerners.

And for the Onitsha and Bini relationship that you said doctor Nnamdi talked about, if they were so close, is it that they didn't know that there were more people like the Anambra people, and the Oba could conquer...my dear, this is all logic.

Using placards and bronze all isn't proof of rulership my dear, it was written by men (and please I'm not refuting that,)

But what bewilders me is the level of pristinity of the east when it comes to Benin. And if they influenced Onitshas why don't they speak a corrupted form of Benin at least, if they were in a so-called peaceful and harmonious relationship. It all doesn't make sense.
Lagos is a remnant of Benin empire, so is Onitsha and Warri.. all these cities were colonies established by Benin Empire.. Lagos state official website acknowledges Benin empire's contribution to its beginnings..
If you are looking for traces of Benin's influence in these places, its is right in front of you.. even the traditional rulers from these places dresses like the Oba of Benin and even traces their origins from Benin..

FYI.. Onitsha are Benin people.. many of them acknowledge this.

People running around saying he is from delta state are eastern igbos who are trying to deny Benin's influence in the east igbo land..
Location of Equiano's village is in present day Anambra state

I've read about him. My question, goes to this. One man's details of origin shouldn't be for all. And as I've read and how enlightened I am, I observed that the Oba was in good heads with most strangers in the land in those period, the Portuguese and English alike. That gave him the advantage to sell his people, when the strangers had supplied them guns.

So, for Equinos case, it's his pedigree and he can stick with it.

My question is, if the Edo ruled all, at lease there needs to be some things in the lands indicating his past rulership. Like, roads named for him, a honourable festival, names that directly like to the Oba, and all that stuff.

Oba had also sold other tribes, Eluado's side shouldn't be the only deduction to the story, dear. Thank you.

And to add, Oba rarely expanded his kingdom in the east. I know the Oba desired to expand, was he afraid of the East that he rarely expanded, or the West. It's numbing as I even think of it.
Well what has everything you read about Edo history suggests? Even if u don't believe them..
We didn't write them, most were documented hundreds years ago.

What you say about Olauduah Equiano isn't new, since his statement was published here Igbos have been denouncing him lol..

As for celebrating the Great Obas of Benin, when has Africans ever appreciated or acknowledged fellow Africans not of their tribe? We always put each other down because we feel we are better than fellow Africans..

Your concern about Edo is enough proof that Edos influence in your tribe..

Fact:: Many years ago, Edo ruled parts of Yoruba lands (Eastern yoruba) ruled all of Western Igbos, and parts of east igbos like onitsha and parts of Anambra according to Equiano..

The Ogiso dynasty wasn't heriditary. It was more like a traditional/customary democracy setting where the kingship rotated from town to town amongst the natives of the Benin Region who are the Ijaws, Binis & Urhobo.

Here is one more identifiable Ijaw Ogiso after the first two
" Ogiso Erebo (618– 632 CE), was a fisherman and canoe

Guy, are you okay? Which Benin chief/chiefs interfered in what is going on with Tsola.

Incase you are not aware, let me educate you and hopefully cure your ignorance.

1. Tsola is married to the daughter of Captain Hosa, a Benin billionaire.
2. Tsola was made a director in Captain Hosa's company.
3. The current Oba of Benin as a prince was the royal father in the traditional marriage between Tsola and Captain Hosa's daughter.
4. Captain Hosa is very close to the Benin Palace.
5. Tsola probably have more Benin influence and sympathy for the aforementioned reasons than the other interested parties.
6. Captain Hosa can't divorce himself or show lack of interest in his son inlaw becoming the Olu of Itsekiri and by extension his grandson could also become an Olu in the future.

What makes you think the Benin people care about who the mother of any Olu of Itsekiri is? In Benin, your mother's tribe is not as important as your father's tribe.

You are probably carried away by the social media and lacks the understanding of the politics at play with regards to who becomes Olu of Itsekiri.

The Itsekiri royal family and all Itsekiri prominent chiefs traces the Itsekiri monarchy to Benin, so what different do you think it makes to the average Benin person if Tsola mother is Portuguese. It makes no difference and it will not change the fact that the Itsekiri monarchy is and will continue to be an offshoot of Benin. Where the mother of any prince comes from is irrelevant to us. I personally know of numerous hereditary chiefs in Benin whose mothers are Igbo, Yoruba, Ijaw, Urhobos, etc.

The current Iyase of Benin is of Urhobo ancestry, the current governor of Edo state is of Anioma ancestry. Benin have no issues with Itsekiri, they can claim Yoruba or Fulani, we care less. But the monarchy remains Benin just as the Ilorin Emir remains Fulani with majority Yoruba population.
Tsola's children are even more Benin than Yoruba since their mom is Benin.. next Olu will be more benin than yoruba..
