PoliticsNorthern Group Warns Against Plot To Undermine Tinubu by dayo23(op): 7:51am On Jun 15, 2015
A group under the aegis of the Patriotic Northern Coalition for Justice, Peace and Equity has called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to beware of some politicians and elements within the party plotting to undermine the party’s chieftain and former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu.

The national coordinator of the coalition, Alhaji Babangida Sule Jnr, told newsmen in Kaduna yesterday, that Tinubu is the bedrock of APC and still commands great respect in his region and in the party, adding that any plot against his interest will be counter-productive.

He said the North is still grateful to Tinubu for his contributions towards Buhari’s victory and that the coalition will do all it can to stop anyone or group planning against him in the APC.

“Politicians are already strategising for 2019 and they will stop at nothing to achieve their aim. Some of them are in APC and we have uncovered that part of their aims is to undermine the party’s chieftain, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, because they see him as a stumbling block. But we the Patriotic Northern Coalition won’t allow them because we are still grateful to Tinubu for what he has done for the North in the 2015 general elections, particularly his efforts in the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari.

We know that many people played crucial roles in the emergence of Buhari, but Tinubu tops them all.

“Personally, I know of the many times he came to Kaduna to meet with Buhari and assure him that he would do all he could to support him and ensure his victory.

“I know all these things because I was part of the groups that met with him on several occasions, including some APC governors today. Again, in order to ensure Buhari’s victory at the primaries, he used his influence to move the convention from Abuja to Lagos. We know what happened after that and at the final election. So, we won’t allow anybody or group of persons to plan anything against his interest in APC. Besides, such plot will be counter-productive because Tinubu is an influential APC chieftain that commands respect in his region and some other regions.

“Moreover, any crisis in the APC today will be harmful to the nation because APC is the ruling party and whatever affects it can easily impact negatively on the nation,” he said.

Alhaji Sule also decried the moves by some people to form a caucus in APC just like what happened in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) then, where some people formed the New PDP. He said such calculation is totally wrong and will not augur well for the party.

He called on the APC and its leadership not to underrate the PDP too soon, saying that they are still a strong political force which can cause them upset if they are not very careful.

He urged everyone irrespective of party affiliation, tribe, religion and class to join hands with President Buhari so that he can transform the nation and deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.

PoliticsRe: Declare Your Asset Publicly,PDP Tells Ambode by dayo23(f): 8:13pm On Jun 14, 2015
moderate99:
The Lagos State Chapter of Peoples Democratic
Party has called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode
to publicly declare his assets.
He was asked by the major opposition party in
the state to do so on or before June 29.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its Publicity
Secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani, the PDP also charged
Ambode to “personally make public in the media,
his assets as at when sworn in as the present
governor of the state.”
The statement said in part, “The governor is also
asked to make public in the media, the details of
the handover notes and assets of the past
governor, Mr. Babatinde Fashola.”
According to the PDP, if the governor fails to take
up this moral challenge, he will thereafter be
labelled “Governor Pretender” throughout his
tenure.
“The deliberate neglect will however compel us
and other well-meaning Lagosians to explore the
relevance of the Freedom of Information Act on
the matter.
“The PDP posits that the necessity for the present
governor of Lagos state to make public his
present assets is more ignited by the huge
foreign and local debts of nearly a trillion naira
now left behind by the past governor who has
been linked to many personal bank accounts and
property within and outside the country.
“Mr Ambode is under compelling moral duty to tell
Lagosians what he presently has as assets. This
is a spice to the requirement of asset declaration
before the Code of Conduct Bureau. He must also
not conceal the assets declaration of his
predecessor,” the statement added.
Gani stated that this was necessary for the
governor to gain the respect and confidence of
Lagosians as a “genuine servant and not a
pretender servant.”
The June 29 ultimatum given to Ambode,
according to the PDP, is to allow the governor to
voluntarily take up this challenge.
“If he fails to meet up, we will join hands with
other well-meaning Lagosians to confer the title
of ‘Pretender Governor’ on him throughout his
tenure.
“This new dimension to demand for asset
declaration is provoked by the fact of sudden
stupendous wealth the two last governors of the
state have been linked to within and outside the
country, even in the face of under performance
and huge debts now left behind by especially the
past governor,” the party said.

PoliticsAfrica, A Continent Under Siege – Buhari by dayo23(op): 7:35pm On Jun 14, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday took a critical look at the various challenges currently facing Africa and returned a verdict that the continent was under siege.

Buhari made the submission in a statement he delivered at the opening session of the 25th assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union holding in Johannesburg, South Africa.

He said some of the greater challenges to Africans still lie in the political, economic, as well as peace and security spheres.

He said, “Our continent is currently bedeviled by the twin evils of terrorism and insecurity; poverty, youth unemployment, and underdevelopment.

“The destructive effects of the inhuman and criminal campaigns of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria and neighbouring countries; the Al-Shabab attacks in East Africa, and the activities of the Al-Qaeda in the Maghreb, all bear testimony to a continent under siege.

“The images in the international mass media of African youths getting drowned in the Mediterranean sea on their illegal attempts, and often times illusory hope of attaining better life in Europe is not only an embarrassment to us as leaders, but dehumanises our persons.

“Indeed, they combine to paint a very unfavourable picture of our peoples and countries.”

Buhari said African leaders gathered at the summit owed it as a duty to reverse the ugly trend.

He said they must put an end to the so-called push factors that compel African young men and women to throw caution to the winds and risk life, limbs and all, on this dangerous adventure.

The President added that African leaders must redouble their efforts to sustain the economic development of their countries, ensure empowerment of their youths, create more jobs, improve and upgrade their infrastructure, and above all continue the enthronement of a regime of democracy, good governance and respect for human rights and rule of law.

He said these and other measures that engender peace and stability must be pursued relentlessly.

Buhari said leaders must persist in their collective endeavour to work together through the AU and our respective Regional Economic Communities to uplift the continent and provide the Africans the enabling environment for the realisation of their legitimate dreams and aspirations.

He assured them of the unflinching commitment of Nigeria to the ideals and aspirations of the AU as explained in the Agenda 2063, which is geared towards ensuring a peaceful, prosperous and integrated Africa in the next 50 years.

He added that it is for that reason that Nigeria is fully and irrevocably committed to the ECOWAS vision.

“We do so because we believe that African integration is best attained through the instrumentality of our Regional Economic Communities as the building blocs of viable continental institutions.

“Nigeria will therefore continue to play her part in supporting the African Union Commission and other continental and regional institutions in their efforts to prioritise African development in all sectors of human endeavour.

“The journey might look arduous, but certainly not impossible. There are opportunities in every challenge.

“If and when we adopt this call for a change of attitude, approach, and disposition towards agreed protocols and commitments, we shall be bequeathing a politically stable, economically developed, and socially harmonious Africa, thereby justifying the confidence reposed in us by our electorate.

“We will also demonstrate our qualities as statesmen and true daughters and sons of Africa,” the President.

On Wednesday, there was speculation that the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, was prevented from attending Buhari’s meeting with the National Security Adviser on the orders of the President.
The Vice-President was reportedly denied security clearance to attend the meeting because of security reasons by the President.
In his response, the SSA said, “That is the creation of someone who just wanted to write something. It was on the same day he travelled to Sudan to represent the President, the government and the people of Nigeria at the inauguration of the president of that country.
“He couldn’t have been present in two places at the same time. Osinbajo is the Vice-President of Nigeria. In the absence of the President, he is the President. So, there cannot be dark corners into which he will not be allowed. It is not true.”
