– Kanu takes President Buhari to court over violation of human rights – IPOB leader lists these violations The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and radio Biafra director Nnamdi Kanu has taken President Muhammadu Buhari to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) court. In the case between Biafra leader and Nigeria dated March 3, 2016, Kanu is suing for the violation of his rights and that of his colleagues, as well as that of his supporters. He names some of these violations in the case of his unlawful detention and reported torture, extra-judicial detention and torture, as well as the detention and murder of his followers all over Biafraland. The mandate of the ECOWAS court is to enable the observance of law and of the principles of equity and in the interpretation and application of the provisions of the revised treat and all other subsidiary legal instruments adopted by community. The leader of IPOB was arrested by the State Security Service in Lagos in October 2015 on conspiracy and terrorism charges. President Buhari during his maiden media chat said that considering the weight of the crimes Kanu is accused committing against the Nigeria, if he is allowed to enjoy any form of freedom, he is likely jump bail. Nigerian security forces have used excessive force against pro-Biafran protesters in south-eastern Nigeria, Amnesty International has claimed. Lucy Freeman, senior research adviser at Amnesty, told IBTimes UK the NGO had documented instances of excessive force used against protesters connected to the pro-Biafran movement. Pro-Biafrans hold regular marches across south-eastern Nigeria calling for independence and the release of their leader Nnamdi Kanu . It is believed that during one of the latest demonstrations held in Aba state on 9 February, at least 10 people were killed by the army and police, with footage purportedly showing Nigerian security forces attacking pro-Biafrans being widely circulated on social media. Why advertise with us However, spokesperson for Nigerian defence, Rabe Abubakar, told IBTimes UK the police and army did not kill the demonstrators. He also said security forces had to intervene as some pro-Biafrans were allegedly carrying weapons. "What is happening in south-eastern Nigeria is not a conflict situation and the law enforcement model that has been used is not appropriate," Freeman said. "It is not appropriate to use lethal force on protesters, even in case of a violent protest. Why advertise with us "There are consistent reports of excessive use of force, deaths and injuries of people connected to the Biafran movement, of people in Zaria , of people in the north-east . We are not prosecutors and we are not able to carry out a criminal investigation, but the Nigerian government is obligated – when there are credible and serious allegations of human rights violations – to carry out investigations that have to be independent, impartial and effective. It is not enough to deny allegations and people need to be prosecuted and brought to justice." Freeman confirmed that an Amnesty team is on the the ground conducting investigations into allegations of violence and recent pro-Biafran protests. "It is a difficult context because you have so much cover-up by the military. In an ideal situation if someone dies by the use of force, there should be an autopsy, some records of the death, of arrests. What we have seen across the country is that these kind of basic documentation and investigations are not done." Nnamdi Kanu Kanu – leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob) and director of Radio Biafra – was arrested by the State Security Service (DSS) in Lagos in October 2015 on conspiracy and terrorism charges, which were later dropped. A day after the Abuja High Court ruled he should be released, officials pressed new treasonable felon y charges against him, while President Muhammadu Buhari said Kanu would not be granted bail due to the "atrocities" allegedly committed. Watch IBTimes UK's exclusive interviews with Kanu's wife My husband is a prisoner of conscience This is why we need Biafra Kanu was kept in DSS custody until Justice John Tsoho ruled he should be transferred to the Nigeria Prison Service in Kuje, about 40km south-west of Abuja, so family members could visit. "We have seen in several cases the practice of the DSS of arresting someone, holding them unlawfully, and when that person challenges their detention with bail, they are immediately charged with something else to prolong their detention. That's unlawful detention," Freeman said. "There are a number of people who have been detained in connection to Boko Haram who had a similar thing happened. The question is: To what extend is the rule of law respected? By looking at the examples of Kanu and other cases it seems that it is not being respected." Nigeria's position The spokesperson for the army and the government have not responded to a request for comments. However, the Nigerian government has always maintained that Nigeria's unity is a priority for the country and that although peaceful pro-Biafran protests are welcome, demanding the breakaway of the Biafran territories is against the constitution. The government also told IBTimes UK that it does not consider the separatist movement a threat to the current leadership, and defined pro-Biafrans as an "insignificant number of frustrated people who are not a threat to the existence of Nigeria". In several interviews with IBTimes UK, the army and the police denied allegations of violence during pro-Biafran protests, arguing that security forces had to intervene as pro-Biafrans "were armed and disrupted peace in the state". We Are All Biafrans: Insist Youth Leaders of Southsouth Region – Southsouth Biafra Agitators Written by Effiong 22nd November 2015 Youth leaders of the Southsouth region, under the aegis of the COALITION OF SOUTH SOUTH YOUTH LEADERS met in Calabar on Friday, 21st November, 2015 and after appraising the situation in the country and the claim by some unauthorized persons who claimed to be Southsouth leaders that the Southsouth is not part of Biafra, hereby state as follows: 1. The entire Southsouth region is part and parcel of Biafra land. 2. The Southeast and Southsouth have common cultural and historic heritage, 3. We call for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the Director of Radio Biafra 4. We warn the Nigerian Army not to do anything that will escalate the situation in the area. 5. We, however, still believe in one United Nigeria as long as justice and equity will prevail in the land. That the name Biafra is sacrosanct and there is nothing wrong if the people of Southeast and Southsouth decide they should be called Biafrans but within Nigeria. 6. That Mr. President should assure Biafrans that he does not hate them through his actions and conduct. 7. That nobody mandated those elements, who went to Calabar recently to disclaim Biafra, to speak on behalf of the Southsouth. The Southsouth was, is and will continue to be part of Biafra land but within Nigeria. Igbos trade (1 Likes) Chief Dennis Eje Onoja expresses no small delight as he recalls old memories of the harmonious relationship which has existed between his people of Ai-Aroga community in Owukpa district of Ogbadigbo Local Government Area in Benue State, and the people of Obollo-Eke in Enugu state, who share a common border. His very small Idoma village which is not quite a mile to the next Igbo community have everything in common except dialectical differences , arising from the fact that one speaks Idoma ,while the other belongs to the Igbo language. a Auto Me... ... Brescia Auto VOL... 800 € Scopri Truly, for a novice, it would be hard to demarcate the thin line between the Idoma and Igbo communities at the fringes of Benue, Enugu and Ebonyi states, considering the loads of mixing evident in these locations. The climate which is an average temperature reminds any visitor that he or she is neither in the sultry air of the north or completely in the wet south savannah region of the country, especially with the typical grassland forest which characterize the vicinity. While many villages in Owukpa kingdom and Orokam districts of Ogabdigbo local government area border the Igbos of Enugu state, the people of Agila, as well as part of Igumale districts in Ado local government area of Benue state, are bordered by the neighbouring Ebonyi and Enugu states respectively. Basically, the people have shared a lot in common just more than the margin or geographical closeness to each other, long before and after the Nigerian civil war. The peculiarities abound in inseparable relationships built among the natives over the centuries, except for simulated barrier spelt out between them as a result of geopolitical division. Although, the Agila natives and their neighbouring Ngbo communities in Ohaukwu local government area of Ebonyi state, lost their peace at some point, and have been at each other’s throat ever since following perennial border disputes, however, those of Owukpa in the estimation of Chief Onoja have continued to enjoy harmonious relationship. “In many decades of co-habiting together with the Igbos at this rural backwater of the border, it feels so good. Everyone goes around cheerfully, be it markets or farms,” Onoja enthused. Apart from doing things together, both communities of Owukpa and Obollo unarguably have the best palm wine.My hired motorcycle rider stated in a pidgin English as he waved his both hands to illustrate that the many palm trees dotting the lonely dusty path between the villages, were perhaps the finest in the entire South-East region. The people found around the area share a lot of familiar names and even speak each others tongue fluently for purposes of communication, but none of the languages dominates as a primary means of communication. According to Chief Onoja, from time immemorial, many other communities of Ogwurute, Ai-Aroga, Itabono in Owukpa among others and Orokam districts, share a walk able distance border between the Igbos of Obollo-Eke, Amala, Ikem and Obollo-Afor in Enugu State. “We also bear the same names such as Ugwu, Chukwu, Enyanu, Ada, Ngozi Onyekachi, Okute, among others, and there are huge cultural similarities. There are so many intermarriages with the Igbos at the border here. The Igbo people are well-behaved. We understand and speak Igbo very well, just like they also understand and speak Idoma. Besides, we buy and sell at the same markets such as the Ukwo-Owukpa and Obollo-Eke,” he said. Onoja, a retired headmaster also noted that the two tribes at the neigbouring border have some universal way of life which is depicted in their masquerades’, dances, attires, cuisines and beliefs, just as there are semblances of traditional titles. As a matter of fact, Onoja’s paternal grandmother, Une, is an Igbo woman from Ikem, and he speaks both languages fluently as he boasted of enjoying genuine friendship with relatives of the Igbo ethnic stock. Nnamdi Kanu: Militants declare war on FG Call on United Nations to prevail on go TWO militant groups in the Niger Delta region have declared their readiness to confront the Federal government in battle for its refusal to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Director, Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. The groups, Concerned Militant Leaders (CML) and Niger Delta People’s Democratic Front (NDPDF) made the declaration yesterday in separate statements in port Harcourt, Rivers State, following reports that there were plans by the Federal Government, to use witnesses in mask, to testify against the leader of IPOB, who was charged of treason in court. Reacting to the report, leaders of the two groups, General Ben (CML) and Precious Iyoyo (aka General playboy), stated that since President Muhammadu Buhari-led government was determined to cause problem in the country particularly in the South-South and South-East zones, by stubbornly refusing to release Kanu, the groups were ready to cripple the economy. Specifically, General Ben, who is known for his blunt statements, said when the 31 day-ultimatum given to the federal goverment to release the IPOB leader expires tomorrow, Monday, February 22, the battle line would have been drawn. Ben, in the CML statement, declared that the target areas of the first stage of the uprising would be in Abia and Anambra States, as well as Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He said that the group’s reason for the two states and Abuja was because they were the major places where Federal Government shed the blood of their “brothers and sisters.” General Ben declared: “We are ready for Federal Government, which said we would be treated as criminals and saboteurs. The 31-day ultimatum will expire on Monday. We are ready and will attack them in Abia, Anambra and Abuja, where they shed the blood of Biafran brothers and ssters. “We are not going to attack the civilians per se; but we are going to attack the presence of the Federal Government in the areas. If President Buhari could not clear Boko Haram in six months, as he told Nigerians, why didn’t he focus attention on the North? Why did he waste the blood of Biafrans people? “We are in solidarity with the Biafran struggle and there is no going back. We are taking our revenge. We are not going to spare them. We don’t believe in much talk. Enough is enough,” Ben threatened. Similarly, General Playboy threatened that any ettempt by the federal government, through security agencies, to use masked witnesses against the IPOB leader, would not go without dire consequencies. Playboy implored the United Nations (UN) to prevail on the Nigerian government to allow peace reign in the country, freeing Kanu and allowing Biafra to have its sovereignty. “If this nonsense is allowed to go on, lives of innocent people, both Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and foreigners will go down. Many countries parted for peace, why is the case of Nigeria and biafra too difficult? To be together is not by force. “If they (UN) don’t intervene in this matter, and Nigerian government goes ahead to execute its plans to annihilate Biafrans, we will cripple the economy of this country. All eyes are on government not only Kanu but on Tompolo too. The government is treading on very rough and dangerous path,” General Playboy declared. United States President, Mr. Barack Obama, Petition garnered over 4,000 signatories, 47,000 views Senator Iroegbu in Abuja
United States President, Mr. Barack Obama, has been formally presented with over 4,000 signatory petition, calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to respect court orders, uphold the constitution of Nigeria or resign from office. The petition, which is being championed by a Legal Practitioner, Constitutional and Human Rights Lawyer, Ms. Carol Ajie, was sent to Obama on Monday, urging him to bear his influence on Buhari to respect the rule of law. Ajie had in the petition which was launch on the new year eve through the popular petition site Change.org, with over 4,000 signatories and 47,000 views, also urged the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), lawyers, legislators, National Judicial Council (NJC) and benchers, among others, to “call on President Buhari to resign from office for his disobedience to court orders.” The concerned lawyer with the support of other members of the judicial arm of the government, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), asserted that Buhari, by his statements during the Presidential Media Chat at the State House in Abuja, was behind the flagrant disobedience to court orders. Through the petition, Ajie made what she described as a clarion call on President Obama and other concerned stakeholders to “respectfully call President Buhari to order, prohibit violence from politics and rights advocacy campaigns, ask President Buhari to respect court orders or resign, support Nigeria and Nigerians to achieve true federalism or support the path to a confederation of independent states in Nigeria.” She listed some factors in the current administration which necessitated the petition including “sectional tension, deliberate acts of inhumanity and dehumanisation, gender injustice, presidential profligacy and budget 2016 and disobedience of court orders.” She said: “President Buhari’s unfair tactics, expression of prejudices and hostility towards the people commonly known as ‘Biafrans’ in the South-eastern region of Nigeria, is a bad precedent against our peaceful co-existence. The gravamen of his complaint is that the Igbos did not vote for him in March 2015. His supporters now tag the South-east derogatorily as ‘Biafra.’ Elected as President, he must be magnanimous in victory. “President Buhari was quoted as saying those who didn’t vote for him will be punished and sadly demonstrated this in a modern society.” Ajie in the petition, also accused the president of deliberate acts of inhumanity and dehumanisation, especially against the Shiites and Biafran agitators, liking his treatment of these two groups to what led to the 1994 Rwanda genocide. The human rights activist accused President Buhari of gender injustice, saying: “For obscure reasons, President Buhari ceded only 15 per cent to women in his cabinet, without remorse or apologies. Hence must be held to keep this and his other campaign promises and pledges, please.” Source http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/obama-receives-formal-petition-against-buhari-for-disregard-of-court-orders/230198/ |

Following the continues agitation for Biafra, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic (PDP) in Benue State, Chief Abu King Shuluwa has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to quickly look into the agitation happening in some parts of the country over the creation of Biafra and not make the same mistake the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan made in handling Boko Haram issue. Shuluwa in a chat with newsmen in Makurdi recently, he said; “Boko Haram continued during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan because that government wanted it so. I don’t think President Buhari would want Biafran agitation to continue. If he does, then he is playing with fire.” “There should be dialogue between the elders and representatives of the Igbos and the Nigerian government to bring the current Biafran agitation to an end. Buhari should assemble the Igbo elders and if they insist on going, he should let them go with their oil and we who are remaining will find other means of survival.” “Igbos are business people and are all over Nigeria. Those who are agitating now were not born during the Biafran war. We want to know from their elders and representatives whether they want to go or not and it should be granted them but who will lose?” Culled from – The Sun Source http://www.weeklypostng.com/2015/12/biafra-let-biafrans-go-with-their-oil.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook&m=1 |
The people of Ijaw have again cried out over the effect of environmental degradation due to gas exploitation in their domain. They say the zone is being gradually wiped off and that federal and states governments of affected areas must act fast in finding a lasting solution to the menace. This is contained in a communique issued at the end of a two-day stakeholders’ workshop in Warri, Delta State.Delegates from 78 Ijaw clans across the zone met under the aegis of Ijaw National Congress, INC. According to them, “The environment remains the most valuable physical resource for development and survival of the Ijaw nation. “Summit resolved that urgent steps be taken to implement the UNEP report on Ogoni and clean up other degraded communities.” The summit insisted that Ijaw communities bearing the resources of the nation should control same and pay taxes to the government at the centre. While assuring of their preparedness to work peacefully with the President Mumammadu Buhari administration, the INC said, “Violence or restiveness is a new phenomenon foisted on the Ijaw by circumstances of oppression and frustration including militarization of Ijaw territory.” Source http://cdn.dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/oil-spill.jpg?fbe18f |
