. Traders In Zuba International Market Shut Down Operations Over Shop Revocations NEWS Traders at the Zuba International Market in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja, took drastic action on Tuesday by shutting down the market in protest against the revocation of over 300 of their shops. The revocation was carried out by Lion Property Consult Ent Ltd in collaboration with the Gwagwalada Area Council, with plans to revoke more shops. The traders, organized under the Zuba International Main Market Traders Association, voiced their grievances, stating that they had paid for verification and validation carried out by the developer between 2022 and 2023, which was supposed to cover a five-year term. However, they have yet to receive their allocation papers. Olumakinju Peter, the Secretary of the traders’ association, expressed frustration over the situation. “We just paid for Verification and Validation which was done by the developer between the year 2022 / 2023 for a five-year term. Few months after the successful exercise, we received a message confirming the revocation of over 300 shops and warehouses without giving any reason.” He further explained that all attempts to engage the developer and the area council have been met with threats and aggression. “All letters, calls, round table discussions, and personal engagement to further discussion on his assignment have been entertained with different degrees of threats and aggression.” The situation escalated last year when the developer attempted to remove the roofs of shops stocked with valuables without prior notice, causing a crisis that was eventually halted by the area council after stakeholder intervention. The traders have sought clarity from the Gwagwalada Area Council regarding the developer’s scope of engagement and the details of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement. Despite assurances from the council to address these concerns, the traders feel their issues remain unresolved. An emergency meeting held on June 6, 2024, by the Gwagwalada Area Council, involving heads of security agencies and the developer, declared the resumption of the developer’s activities in the market without addressing the traders’ concerns. The council directed the developer to collaborate with the traders’ association and ensure no existing shops were touched until all issues were addressed. However, the traders accuse the developer of acting contrary to these instructions by painting shops without their consent. They fear that the developer, in collusion with some council personnel, will use this renovation to claim full control of the market and impose exorbitant charges on the traders. Efforts to reach the vice chairman of the council for comments were unsuccessful. The developer, Agu Okechukwu Samuel, defended the actions, stating, “Gwagwalada Area Council is the owner of that market; the traders are tenants. They are a rebel group.” The ongoing dispute has left the market in turmoil, with traders demanding fair treatment and transparency from both the developer and the area council. The situation underscores the need for clear communication and equitable agreements in public-private partnerships affecting livelihoods. https://independent.ng/traders-in-zuba-international-market-shut-down-operations-over-shop-revocations/ https://mikeosemekenews.com.ng/traders-protest-market-closure-in-gwagwalada-after-developer-revokes-shop-leases/ |

Tribune Online Zuba International market traders shutdown over shop revocation by Lawrence Bajah June 18, 2024 Reading Time: 3 mins read A A Zuba International market traders shutdown over shop revocation Traders in Zuba International Market, Gwagwalada area council, in the nation’s capital, Abuja, known as Zuba International Main Market Traders Association, on Tuesday shutdown the market over revocation of over 300 of their shops and plans to revoke more by a developer, Lion Property Consult Ent Ltd and Gwagwalada area council. This is as the traders say they have paid for their verification and validation done by the developer between the year 2022/2023 for a five year term but were yet to given their allocation papers. The traders who shut down the market for almost the whole day said they were in discussions with the developer and officials of the area council but nothing positive is coming out of such discussions but only threats and intimidation. Secretary of the traders, Olumakinju Peter told newsmen that; “It is worthy to bring to your notice that we just paid for Verification and Validation which was done by the developer between the year 2022 / 2023 for a five (5) year term. Few months after the successful exercise we received a message confirming the revocation of over 300 shops and warehouses without giving any reason, claiming Gwagwalada area council has ceded its powers over the market to him under a signed PPP agreement that empowers him to do anything with the shops in our market. All letters, calls, round table discussions and personal engagement to further discussion on his assignment has been entertained with different degrees of threats and aggression. “We refer to the last crisis that happened in the market late last year 2023, when the same developer came into the market unannounced and started removing the roof of shops stocked with valuables, before he was later stopped by the Area council that engaged him. After the intervention of relevant stakeholders. “We have followed up on the Gwagwalada area council with letters, calls and close door meetings to get the details and scope of the developer’s engagement so as to understand and mobilize our members for necessary support. In all correspondence, the Gwagwalada area council promised to give the traders a thorough breakdown of the scope of the developer’s engagement before any structural adjustment is made to existing structures. “In an emergency meeting summoned on the 6th of June, 2024 by the Gwagwalada Area Council which looked like an ambush to the association executives, had in attendance the Heads of security agencies, committee members of PPP Markets/Parks and the Developer, It was declared to us and I quote “the Gwagwalada area council have come to the conclusion that the developer should resume back to site” without addressing any of our concerns, transactions, petition and inquiries as regards his scope of engagement and authorization in the market as well as the MOU signed between the developer and the council. ALSO READ:G60 lawmakers ask Fubara to file treason suit against ex-LGA Chairmen “However, the council directed the developer to carry the association along in any of his planned activities in the market and ensure he doesn’t touch any of the existing shops until all our concerns are addressed. “But now, he is going contrary to the instructions of the area council painting our shops without our consent. With a wide spread of information around the market, it is rumored that the developer has connived with some personnel of the area council, so that after the painting, he will claim the renovation and upgrading of the market is completed and will be given full control of the market, after which he will revoke all the allocations in the market and make every shop occupier to pay an exorbitant price of Five Million Naira (5,000,000).” As at the time of filing the report, efforts to reach the vice chairman of the council, who is the leader the PPP proved futile since he did not pick up calls nor reply to messages sent to him. When contacted, the developer, Agu Okechukwu Samuel, told Nigerian Tribune that; “Gwagwalada area council is the owner of that market, the traders are tenants, they are a rebel group, the have a chairman, you can ask him. “They have written to the area council many times to come and renovate the market, now that we are doing that, they are complaining, talk to their former chairman, I call him because they obtained a court order restraining him from parading himself as chairman of the association.” Related Posts Sources https://tribuneonlineng.com/zuba-international-market-traders-shutdown-over-shop-revocation/ |

Peter Gregory Obi, the presidential flag bearer of the Labour Party and former governor of Anambra state has sent out a message to those saying that he lied about Nigeria's total export rate. He made this known while addressing members at the Labour Party summit in Abuja. He took his audience down memory lane by reminding them of the statement he made last month about the total export of Nigeria not being up to thirty billion dollars in 2021. He referred to the information shared by the National Bureau of Statistics(NBS). According to his findings, the Nigeria's total export last year was 18.9 trillion naira and at that time he made that statement, the exchange rate of dollar to naira was about six hundred and fifty naira, not 399.6 naira as claimed by those who countered him. So, to get the actual figure in dollars, he divided 18.9 trillion naira by 650 naira and that's about $29.1 billion. He concluded by asking those present at the summit to go and verify. To my own opinion the case in Abuja and the one in abia is different one does not invalidate the other on the one in abia his seeking his foundamental human rights and claim from the govt for envading his house against court pronouncement granting him bail Remember court Grant him bail so that he can be attending his trial in Abuja Victory in abia will only invalidate some charges against him especially that he escape after bail |
