EducationRe: Why I Want To Send One Million Books To African Universities - Philip Alabi by deepwater(f):
The idea that a discarded material from an institution of learning is to be sent back to Africa for student to study is very worrisome.

It is safe to say that the content of the material is outdated and irrelevant to today's knowledge, is there any point studying such?

Phillip you have tried, but painfully, back home here, the little ones wouldn't read anymore, they simply just want to sa'se (whatever that means angry)

DemonMonkey7:
funny enough my dear, is the fact you've ignored that' knowledge can never be outdated, you have to get the basics first then you build on what existed before, how would this happen when you see reasons why these precious materials should remain discarded... meanwhile What book are u currently reading?oh Nigerians dont read!
When you decide to study someone else's garbage, you end up playing catch up and you can never lead the park, because that is all there is - trying to meet up!
Your school of thought about building on what existed before is not new to me, we have analyzed this in many technical management symposiums, it is a very good recipe to remain a third world country.

What we need is indigenous ideas, not imitation and trying to re-invent the wheel.

As you have asked, i am on Modern control system by Richard Dorf & Robert Bishop 10th edition. Do not worry about it, it is not a pacesetters novel nor Mills and Boons...

Good morning,
Despite the caveat you still want to.discuss this?

Ok, no wahala smiley

jayloms:
Some part of your analysis makes sense, however, one is tempted to ask - "what happened to the first come first serve" clause?

One would have thought that those who met the benchmark required to progress to stage 2, would have received their invites to do so.

If Mr. A meets the benchmark (let's say 80/100 4 d BM) to proceed to d nxt stage and he's not progressed to continue his 2nd stage assessment, but gets served the love letter because Mr. B's 1st stage assessment was relatively better, then the "first come first serve" clause would have become invalid.

The only logically acceptable explanation why Mr. A got served d love letter, should be because he didn't meet d benchmark, otherwise, they might have to put up an explanation on what they meant by "first come first serve "
First come first serve rule could have been well observed hence any Mr. A who is completely eligible to apply would be number 1 on the list with respect to his selected job role regardless of his aggregates until being knocked out.

Let's look at the BM as a pressure vessel which aim is to rectify and strip applicants into stage 2 and love letter respectively, rather than a holding vessel for transit from stage 1 to 2.

Perhaps, a condition to be fulfilled in this pressure vessel is to be able to stay throughout the resident time in the pressure vessel before being rectified for the next stage.

Any applicant who could not stay throughout the resident time circa 10days after 15th June 2017 might not progress.

Anyway we.should not be discussing this as it might just be another gibberish. wink

whilst I have always loved your posts on here and you knowledge about the industry, I am surprsied at what you put up there. @first bolded, Iwasnt referring to Nigeria when I mentioned Ph.d. I am not sure there is any Rand D centre in Nigeria. some applicants on here may have chosen RandD thus the reason for my post. @ second bolded, the Phd wasn't for reservoir engineering and there was no hype at all.pls re read to understand my post. I made my assumption because of the profiles of individuals in shell I know that are Reservoir engineers and petrophysicist.@ third bolded, do not be deceived, there is a preference for first class graduates that closely match their requirements.@ fourth bolded, you may need better comprehend better, no one said you need to know any shell employees.I only advised one checks out profiles of individuals that passed through the graduate program to be able to tell which one fits. Not all positions in the degree matcher are available in Nigeria, some individuals have first degree in one course and a second degree in another course. Whatever I advised will only help make a good decision. Its all research.
@last bolded I can say boldly shell has preference for some universities and some universities do refer graduates to shell. These universities' lecturers are consultants with shell. I never said they are the best engineering schools in the country.
Do not be surprised bro, for I am only human like you and not infallible. tongue grin tongue

Cheer up guys, this is the way I see it; everyone is a winner until a better candidate shows up.

It's a healthy competition, to be eligible to apply shows you have tried in achieving something great.

The jobs are sectioned into different positions, each position has its respective benchmark, for instance say 10 slots per position.

The first eligible applicant is logged into the slot1 after a careful review of part A,B,C of stage 1.

Lets say the applicant in question has an aggregate of 65/100 in stage 1 and the first to be assessed for that position he/she then assumes the number 1 person for that position.

Progressively, when another candidate is fully assessed for stage 1 with an aggregate of 72/100, s/he becomes number 1 for that role and the initial person of 65/100 becomes number 2.
If a third person is assessed and has 84/100 as aggregate, s/he becomes number 1 for that role and the person with 72/100 becomes number 2 and person of. 65/100 becomes number 3, this goes on and on.
Let say if only 10 people would be considered for that particular role, and more people with higher aggregate shows up that the first 10 persons on the list has above 72, then Mr. 65/100 gets the 'love letter'. This could explain why the love letters trickle in as the day goes by and more people complete their test and assessment follows.

If one is observant enough, we could see that the love letters are not truly the same in terms of choice of words, perhaps for people who didn't meet the requirements but.went on to apply, theirs would be different, for those who met the requirements but aggregates at stage 1 could not let them compete, that is when the least aggregate in the bench mark has 86/100 and someone is having 45/100 for same role obviously you can't compete so a different love letter is issued but story remains same.
Then someone who has been competing on the bench mark until being knocked out would get something like a very well crafted love letter that Shell would not be pursing your candidacy on this occasion, they might go further to say they would keep your data for some time, maybe if operational demands require more hands on that role, they slack the benchMark and some people might hop in. Just like the last one shared on this forum.
You see, it's a healthy competition.
We are all winners until a better candidate shows up.

Disclaimer: Do not make any decision on the gibberish above, it is just my thoughts, however, I am certain I am not far from the truth.
Ooooooo #Deepwater flesh and blood couldn't have revealed this to you!!! But the spirit.... grin

Lols... The reservoir and petrophysics jobs are even for first class students, and there are positions shell would prefer masters and Ph.d for i.e research and development. for those complaining of "love letters", next time, get familiar with shell employees, you can check through profiles on linkedin to be sure what positions will fit. Never make guesses in your assessment. For the personality test, never choose the options between you have only two options true or false i.e strongly agree/strongly disagree. If you choose option like neither agreeor disagree, it means you don't know yourself and are unstablem in you videos, put up a smile, do not allow the timer go off whilst you are still talking, alow about 5 seconds left click next next it submits itself. Gain some technical skills and highlight it on your CV. If you are not a first class student that can be referred by choice universities i.e uniben, uniport make sure you have great aptitude and technical skills.
It was obviously stated that applicant who have been awarded degrees from 2013 upwards should apply, how would they prefer a PhD holder for a graduate trainee position all in the sake of 'reservoir engineering'? In the first place what is the hype about reservoir engineering?
We have people in here that have gone through thick and thin of Chemical engineering as a course of study and I am certain they would not be perturbed by any reservoir engineering stuff.

Checkout SHELLs YouTube videos where they interviewed some of their recent graduate trainees, there is one reservoir engineering trainee guy that said he knew nothing about reservoir engineering until he got the job. I can drop the link here for you.

As for the first class stuff, guy forget that thing, you know how many first class Don collect letter last week for here?

Lastly you do not need to know Shell employees Or snoop around their LinkedIn profile to know what suites you, these guys are ordinary human beings abeg.
Use the degree matcher or whatever they called it on their website.

Also, forget that uniben, uniport story. They are not even the best engineering schools in the country.

One thing is certain, some folks here are going to get this job. So let's just accept our fate and move on.

Shell never promised everybody employment. They want the very best amongst us. So let's support our loved ones still in the game and wish them well.

let's do the calculation ourselves. If 29,000 applied to N power in 3days, how many will apply to SHELL in 14days?

When you get your answer in the equation above, find the percentage of those that have got regret mails here on Nairaland to total number of assumed applicants.

Don't forget application are treated on rolling basis which means first come first serve.

Is it not possible that all roles even get filled up on the first day? Remember only registered users were the first set of people allowed to apply to the job because new people that registered were having error for the first 2 days if I am right.

So let's put all this together and draw our conclusion. how many does shell even want to employ. I just laugh at my 10,000 brother. I am very sure they can't take more than 100 at most; that is even if they are generous enough. Let's not forget as well that people that would be connected from above are still going to be part of this total number of recruits.

So in all, let's thank God for the Hire Vue experience. I am sure most of us are experiencing digital interview for the first time. Let's forget the pains and suits that we had to wear and the number of times we shined our teeth at the camera. It's an experience worth it.

Let's not forget at least we see shell advert and the reply was instantenuous. How about the likes of NLNG that have recruitment process lingering for years or the Agip, Chevron, Mobil that we don't hear about. Many of them will go as far as overseas to go bring Nigerians in diaspora to come and work in their local office.

Let's move on. one thing is that if we don't quit, sooner or later we will get there. For those that will get the job, you should always have reason to thank God because many were invited but the chosen few were hired.
grin grin
I know of someone who applied on the 15th and got both test invite mails same day.

Secondly the 10,000 job opportunities could be for the 28 countries worldwide in which they have advertised the job for graduate trainees.

Working at Shell might end up not being as rosy as many think. I read the clause that says after 2-5 years of coming in as graduate trainee you become an Independent Shell Contractor. I think that means you only receive salaries and benefits packages for 2-5 years. Then you later become a contractor under shell where you no longer receive salaries but paid only when you have a contract assignment. In the long run the politics involved in securing a contract will be high. I trust Nigeria for that. Then no retirement packages. You just end up being used and dumped.

Please let's spread our tentacles for other opportunities cos I believe there are many companies out there far better than Shell in the long run.

You can also think of starting a business. May end up the best option afterall.
this, you meant ''The Shell Graduate Program is a development framework that enables graduates to become fully independent Shell professionals in 2-5 years''

I am not sure you understood that statement, look at it this way, as a graduate trainee, you are a dependent (still learning and passing through a set developmental framework) shell personnel that needs to be developed into a fully independent SHELL professional. Where did you see SHELL contractor after 2-5 years? grin grin grin grin

It was clearly stated that u do so within 5 days prior to receiving such email. It's behavioural in nature, they need ambitious graduate with seriousness. Delay may look unserious to them. "C".A.R, means ur capability toward completing a task(instructions) if I may say.
It doesn't work like that, you are just simply being afraid.

You have 10 days after successful submission to complete your test, preferably within the first 5 days.
It was even acknowledged in the auto reminder that they are aware of your busy schedule(s); do not forget you have peeps applying from a remote location or in transit due to their current job demands, how could you place an application process as priority over an already obtained employment, hence, you have the 10 days grace period.

There are better ways to access CARs, not this one. A befitting example is the regular FTC squad on nairaland who are always the first to complete the task of posting on a thread on homepage, most of the times they have virtually nothing to say on the subject matter huh.

Can you boast of being the first applicant to successfully submit an application when asked during the interview about your capability towards completing a task?

Speaking generally, i have noticed the fear culture from Nigeria trained graduates, it is always a case of searching out a loop hole where a lecturer(recruiter) can harm the student (applicant).
