Speaking of setting up a business, you know that is what Igbos are good at, right? When your NBS says ''unemployed'', do they mean those not working in the formal sector (civil servants or regular company staff)? Is an Nnewi, Onitsha, Aba, Alaba or Idumota or ASPAMDA business man (99% of whom are Igbos) who owns his own business and travels to China/Dubai/Brazil/ Europe/America, etc every other month be classified as unemployed? Robber electrocuted in Ebonyi while trying to loot a provision store

A middle aged man was yesterday electrocuted to death in Ebonyi while trying to loot a provision store located at No 22 Ezza Road Abakaliki.

The man was electrocuted when he wanted to gain entrance into the shop in the early hours of the day through the door but could not succeed as the inner burglary proof door proved too hard to cut open.

The burglar in an attempt to loot the shop, went to the tailoring shop beside the provision store and forced the door open and gained entrance into the provision store through the ceiling.

Confirming the incident the Ebonyi Police Pubic Relations Officer, Sylvester Igbo said that the burglar who went into the shop when there was power failure in the area was electrocuted when the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in their usual fashion restored power to the area.

His word, “This morning we received information that a burglar broke into a shop that is located at No 22 Ezza Road, while he was in the ceiling, of course at the time he went into the place there was no light, while he was in the ceiling trying to gain entrance eventually their was electricity and he was electrocuted.

“When the owner of the shop came to the place this morning and saw that the shop’s doors were damaged she alerted the police who came and discovered that somebody was lying dead in the ceiling.

“The corpse was yet to be identified and has been deposited at Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA) for autopsy. Police has commenced full investigation to unravel what happened, if he came with other accomplishes and how many people that went with him.”

Mrs Chukwu Virtue the owner of the shop noted that she had lost over N1.8m to the constant burglaries of her shop which she said made her to install the inner burglary proofs.

According to her it has been a long time that robbers have been visiting my shop. This is the eightieth time. So, it was this morning that my younger brother came to open the shop to discover that the padlock to the shop has been cut down but the inner one did not allow them to penetrate so they decided to follow the roof of my neighbour’s shop who is a tailor to my own shop.

The wealth is evenly distributed. Yeah. That would explain all the kidnappings and armed robberies then.

Nigeria: FG Flags Off GDP Computation for States
4 August 2012

Ikeja — The Federal Government has flagged off the computation of the States Gross Domestic Product (SGDP) for the South West region.

Mr Shamsudeen Usman, the Minister of National Planning, who inaugurated the programme at the Government House, Ikeja on Friday, said the computation was part of Federal Government's strategy at stimulating the economic development of the states.

The scheme was aimed at providing a measure of the size of economic activities of each state.

The Federal Government had flagged off the SGDP of states in other south political zones.

The programme is an initiative of the National Planning Commission and the Federal Bureau of Statistics with support from the Governors' Forum.

Usman said the computation of SGDP and its inclusion in the national data framework would enhance the data's comprehensiveness and promote the predictability of the national economy.

"The computation and the inclusion of State's Domestic Product (SGDP) in the national framework data will also promote accountability and create awareness of the outcomes of efforts at the sub-national levels.

"With the disaggregated data and information on economic activities available, it will give room for improved management of both the sub-national and national economies, as well as generate healthy competition among states."

Usman said the published data of states GDP would also serve as a basis for effectively benchmarking the economies of such states and facilitating their rating by rating agencies.

The minister said that a road map had been put place for the implementation of the SGDP project which would be done in two phases and would be completed in June 2013.

He said the government had already completed the listing and updating of establishments in all the 774 local Government Areas preparatory to the data collection exercise to be held in pilot state.

"The key message from the exercise is that over 1000 new firms were identified and listed.

"The next set of activities in the first phase includes development of instruments and the training of statistical officers and data enumerators.

THE STUFF OF NIGHTMARE

Sonnie Ekwowusi is worried about the frequent rough ride in the Nigerian airspace

Barely 24 hours after the Federal Government lifted the suspension on the licence of Dana Airlines, an Enugu-bound Aero Contractors plane got entangled in another air mess which, thank to God, did not result in another fatal mishap.

At about 4.30 p.m last Thursday, Bede, a lawyer friend called from Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. (Bede broke the sad news of the Dana crash of June 3, 2012, to me. So upon hearing his voice again last week I become greatly alarmed). Anyway, he simply said in a mellowed voice that he and other intending passengers were at Enugu Airport watching a plane unsuccessfully trying to touch down the runway.

After about three minutes, Bede called again but this time he was reassuring. He said that an Aero plane from Lagos trying to land at Enugu Airport could not land because the two tyres could not come out and consequently the plane had been hovering in the air. He concluded that he was heading for a motor park to board a Lagos vehicle. Fear gripped me. I started praying.

But at about 7.30 p.m my phone rang again, this time another lawyer fondly called Ik was calling. He narrated that he was on board the troubled Aero plane, that the plane had finally landed in Lagos after three unsuccessful attempts to land in Enugu. Punctuating his statements intermittently with, “we thank God we are alive”, Ik stated that initially the pilot announced that it was raining in Enugu necessitating his inability to land, but after a time the pilot and the crew members stopped communicating. At that juncture, all the passengers on board started screaming. Many sang church choruses. To cut the long agonizing story short, Ik said that as soon as the plane landed in Lagos, all the passengers quickly alighted and took to their heels.

This is not the first time Aero has been involved in near fatal aviation mishap since the Dana crash of June 3. Recentlya friend who boarded an Aero plane complained that the two tyres failed to come out at the time of landing at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, that the plane was almost crash-landing when the two tyres eventually came out. Apart from Aero, many passengers complain that other aircraft used for domestic flights in Nigeria are not airworthy. One doesn’t have to be an aviation expert to arrive at this conclusion.

The last time I boarded Dana aircraft, the plane looked no different from a Lagos molue. Besides, power failure at our airports has worsened. In fact two days after the Dana air crash of June 3, Arik, Aero and one international airliner could not land at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja due to power failure on the runway. A friend who boarded the affected Arik aircraft from Port-Harcourt said that when the plane couldn’t land on getting to Abuja the pilot had no option but to start hovering in the air for awhile before heading back to land at Port-Harcourt airport where it had earlier taken off. The international airline, he said, eventually flew out of Nigeria to land in Equatorial Guinea.

The most painful aspect is the Aviation Minister Ms. Stella Oduah, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) and other Aviation authorities are not in control of the worsening situation. It is a big scandal that Ms. Oduah, AIB and NCAA have turned round to absolve Dana Air of wrongdoing even before the official release of the report of the crash. I am particularly scandalized by the following utterances credited to Stella Oduah, “rather than indict it (Dana), the result clearly showed that the airline is one of the best in the country today. Dana’s manuals, log book and administrative policies are all in compliance with the NCAA rules and regulations… The accident was not due to NCAA’s lack of responsibility and it was not due to Dana not doing what they ought to do.”

Is Ms. Oduah holding brief for Dana Airlines? Is the Aviation Minister now a High Court judge discharging and acquitting institutions of wrongdoing? For me, let Dana Airlines be reopened. Let the gates of Dana Airlines be flung open and let Ms Stella Odua and her family be the first to board a Dana plane from Abuja to Lagos. Welcome on board!

Arik Air accuses Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, of corruption

The Airline says it is suffering because it bruised the ego of the aviation minister when it refused to accede to ‘personal interest’ requests.

Corrupt demands allegedly made by the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, led to the disruption of flights by Nigeria’s largest domestic carrier, Arik Air.

Arik Air, suspended indefinitely all its domestic operations after aviation union workers from the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) disrupted its flights out of Lagos on Thursday.

Union members gathered at the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport as early as 7a.m. and prevented the airline from operating its normal flights over allegedly unpaid debts.

The union members claimed that the airline owes aviation agencies a combined debt of about N17bn, a claim the airline denies.

Despite the public knowledge of Arik’s debt, the grounding of the airline’s operations by the union members, sources say, is a reflection of the intention of Ms. Oduah.

The 5 per cent demand

Ms. Oduah, sources told PREMIUM TIMES made a demand from Arik’s owners, a demand too much for the management to let go of.

The Vice-Chairman of Arik Air, Aniete Okon, hinted at the minister’s ‘greedy’ demand while addressing journalists in Lagos, Thursday afternoon when he said the airline is being punished for its refusal to accede to the personal interest of Ms. Oduah.

“This is a direct result to the rebuff that the minister suffered when she tried to promote personal rather than national interest,” Mr. Okon said.

Mr. Okon, fearing a direct confrontation with the minister, a close ally of President Goodluck Jonathan, declined to give details of Ms. Oduah’s demands.

Multiple and usually reliable sources however told PREMIUM TIMES that the “personal interest” Ms. Oduah demanded, was a part ownership of Arik.

“The Minister wants 5per cent share of Arik at all cost, which has been resisted by the Arik Chairman,” a close source to the two parties said.

The source also alleged that Dana Air, whose operating license was returned after suspension following its airline crash of July, agreed to the minister’s demand before it was permitted to operate again.

Arik is a dying airline

The Aviation Minister has however denied having personal interest in Arik.

Ms. Oduah speaking through her media assistant, Joe Obi said the allegations by Arik is a diversionary tactic.

“Arik should be advised to live up to its responsibility as a corporate citizen and stop chasing shadows,” Mr. Obi said.

He said the minister never demanded a part ownership of Arik.

“Why will the minister want to have a stake in a business that is not thriving. The minister has never and will never show an interest in an ailing firm,” Mr. Obi said.

The minister also denied having any secret deal with Dana before the lifting of its suspension.

Mr. Obi, while explaining the Ministry’s decision to lift Dana’s suspension even when the airline was yet to pay adequate compensation to all the families of the crash victims, said Ms. Oduah did the right thing.

“Where is it done that if an aircraft in a fleet has an accident, the entire aircraft is grounded?” he said, explaining that the ministry and its agencies were carrying out adequate certification of Dana’s fleet.

Mr. Obi could however not give the correct value to Arik’s debt.

How much does Arik owe

A breakdown of the sum the aviation union accuses Arik of owing shows that Arik Air owes FAAN N7bn; the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, is owed N5 billion naira; and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, over N4 billion.

Though Arik admitted it was owing the aviation agencies, it denied the circulated figures.

The airlines Managing Director, Chris Ndulue, said, “the amount the agency (FAAN) is claiming is fictitious and baseless.”

“We have an outstanding balance of N1.6bn from the period before FAAN/Ministry of Aviation started “Pay-As-You-Go (payment in advance). In January 2011, the former minister of aviation directed that such outstanding be cleared within thirty months. We have been paying down on the amount installments of N100m per month. We will continue to do so,” Mr. Ndulue said.

Mr. Obi, the minister’s spokesman questioned Arik’s integrity accusing the management of financial irresponsibility.

“Part of the money they are owing is not their money. They are part of the airfares they have collected from passengers and are supposed to remit to the government,” he said. “Instead they keep them (the money) to themselves.”

Arik is blackmailing Government

The aviation minister also accused the Arik management of blackmailing the government.

“The decision to suspend its operations is a blackmail tool,” Mr. Obi explained. “We can never be blackmailed.”

Arik claimed it was suspending its operations nationwide due to what it described as “persistent hostility of the Ministry of Aviation and Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) management.”

The management of FAAN however released a statement this afternoon distancing itself from the action of the union members.

The agency said it was “not aware of any plan by the unions to embark on the said industrial action.”

“Management considers it to be counter-productive to the current efforts being made to recover debt owed FAAN by Arik Airline or other customers.”

The agency said it was doing everything possible to resolve the issues that led to the industrial action.

Let the court be the arbiter

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, who could not travel to Abuja due to the industrial action, told PREMIUM TIMES that the union shouldn’t be preventing passengers from travelling.

“I had cause to address the leaders of the workers. I did make it clear to them that workers have no business inconveniencing passengers,” he said.

He advised that instead of disrupting the operations of the airline, the agency should take their case to the court.

“It’s the duty of regulatory agency to collect the money from the money from the airlines that are owing and if any of them refuses to pay the proper action in the circumstance is to go to court.”
