Mariangeles: If he thinks okpa tastes like "suffering", I wonder what he'll think ekuru tastes like? 🤔
At least, okpa has some ingredients inside it, and can be eaten on-the-go. Unlike ekuru that is plain, and most likely bland on its own. While I disagree with her, it's a different case for ekuru. Nobody eats ekuru like that, at least, not Yoruba people. We eat it with pepper sauce that usually have some other things like ponmo and meat. |

obembet: That was the blunt opinion shared by Eke Urum, the CEO of Risevest and it quickly sparked reactions online
For those who don’t know, Okpa is a popular delicacy from Eastern Nigeria, especially among the Igbo. It’s made from Bambara nut flour, mixed with palm oil, spices, and steamed in leaves.
To many Nigerians, especially people from the South-East, Okpa is not just food — it’s culture. It’s filling, affordable, and commonly sold on the streets, particularly in the morning.
So when Eke Urum described the taste as “suffering,” it triggered mixed reactions:
But let’s settle it here: Does Okpa really taste good, or do you agree with Eke Urum?
Source What a bum! Ever since I tasted okpa, I've not been able to pass by it without buying. That particular taste is the sole reason. People dey sha, but who asked her? |

Agriculture › Re: Importation Wipes Out 90 Rice Mills by DeOTR: 10:58am On Mar 16 |
nairalanda1: Here is a figure for you
Cost of producing one kilo of Nigerian rice : 850-1300 naira per kg.
Cost of producing one kilo of Thailand rice : N200-380 per kg.
See the problem? I think the farmers should go into another business with competitive advantage or find a way to reduce cost of production. It's not like high labor cost is the reason for this. Economies of scale demands that you produce large quantities to reduce cost. Fully mechanized farming will help them compete. They should use the billions buhari gave them for that. |
Agriculture › Re: Importation Wipes Out 90 Rice Mills by DeOTR: 10:52am On Mar 16 |
IndexMode: The problem is who will farm rice paddy for them.
Especially at a cost that will allow them to mill and make great profit. The farmers want 50k for 3 months of work. By the time they process (fast duration - capital intensive operation) they can make average profit of 10k. But they are not satisfied with that business model.
Miller's began pushing for importation of paddy from India. But the government choose to grant to only Imota mill, BUA and like 3 others. Only friends of government. The others have to source paddy locally to engage local producers. They are not satisfied.
But that's the same blueprint in Sugar also. Dangote is planting only about 20k hectares of sugarcane in Adamawa. All the rest is imported as sugar syrup from Brazil and just processed here. That why nobody else can thrive in sugar unless you can farm sugarcane too. You can't import syrup. Basita fell off because farmers stopped planting for it. 3 years of profit & u will be smiling. 1 year of loss, maybe due to red rot disease. and you might never recover. Insurance no dey for farmers here.
Back to rice. It was never about building mills but empowering farmers and settling for a long term ROI business model before you eventually recoup your capital. But the average businessman joined the bandwagon of milling when a policy shift favored it. Hopes to buy paddy cheap from poor farmers and process to sell for 3x markup price.
I still admire their bravery to invest in Nigeria. But we consumers need them to lead a more patriotic business model. Only backward integration can truly help local rice. Bacita didn't fall because of farmers. Corrupt individuals ran the factory down. I think dangote bought it. |
Agriculture › Re: Importation Wipes Out 90 Rice Mills by DeOTR: 10:45am On Mar 16 |
nairalanda1: Well, if your country can produce rice during the dry season in nigeria, when most farmers cannot produce rice, you would outproduce the average Nigerian farmer
Or in plain english, NIgerian rice famers can produce rice within a limited period (March-September). Your average Thai farmer can produce rice all year round. Also, a nigerian farmer has to rely on irrigation...which increases cost. Your average thai farmer doesn't need irrigation
Finally, Thailand and Brazil has large areas of marshland. Nigeria? We don't have quite enough marshland.
Also, most farming in NIgeria is smallholder. Brazil has large scale farming, as do the thais. That boosts production even more.
You really should not be telling lies, old man. They should leverage irrigation. There are 2 billion people in China and they are not importing rice and the price is not even higher in neighboring countries that will necessitate smuggling. We should stop supporting mediocrity. We don't need 90 useless rice farmers. Only 5 serious people are enough to feed the whole country even if they farm only in the rainy season. |

Themanleshey: Excuse, excuse and more excuses just to cut people neck, tor we support importation when it comes to rice so you don’t have to go through all those stress.
Close your mill and find other business you can do that won’t give you all those troubles. Shikena 🤷♂️ Don't mind him . Anyone that can't compete globally should close down. |

Buhari didn't have a candidate but he allowed tinubu have his way after winning the primaries.
Buhari supported the party so buhari supported tinubu to win. Buhari's men also authorized the needless cashless policy that threw the country into chaos? The emilokan statement was directed at buhari himself, not his men. You know it's very easy and convenient to just pretend to be neutral and let your foot soldiers do your dirty stuff? Will buhari ever smell victory at the APC primaries if Tinubu decided to be neutral? |

Buhari decided to remain neutral. If not for El Rufai and a few others that forced his hands. Tinubu was already considering SDP as his platform. Chief, Buhari didn't have any other choice. On what ground would he not be allowed to participate in the primaries? I'm glad you know buhari did everything to frustrate him. There's no way the useless man could have done more than that. Mrexcell: Buhari allowed tinibu to win without interfering if he wanted to stop tinibu he would have done it and nothing would have happened. Buhari didn't allow him, there was no other way he could work against him after several attempts. The useless "cashless" policy being one of them. There was no other way he could have gone against him without visibly being anti-party. He had no choice since he didn't everything to stop him at the primaries and failed. Anyone above 12 years old in 2022 and could at least have a little interest in politics should not be ascribing APC victory in 2023 to buhari. The man is just useless top to bottom in everything. Looking back at APC, I think Atiku would have been a more honorable person than buhari and Tinubu should have supported him in 2014 instead of the lifeless one. |

SlavaUkraini: Dele Momodu, former presidential candidate, on Sunday said President Bola Tinubu wants to contest against himself, adding that he’s against opposition.
Momodu made the remark while noting that without the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, Tinubu won’t have been Nigerian President.
The African Democratic Congress, ADC, candidate disclosed this while featuring on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
He said: “You can imagine how much Tinubu can generate from Lagos State alone not to talk of national, and when you have an absolute ruler everything is available to him.
“So if I’m with Atiku it shows you it is people who have genuine interest of the country, I believe there must be opposition politics.
There must be opposition candidates but Tinubu wants to contest against himself and it doesn’t make sense to me.
“You can see all these rabble rausing they are doing up and down, giving you fake statistics up and down.
“Look Buhari handed over to Tinubu, but for Buhari it would have been impossible for Tinubu to be president today.”

princeade86: See when people decided to came out to vote. It's not possible to have even 50% turn out in Nigeria of today? You know why? Almost half of those voters figures you see are fantom people. It seems you guys don't still know that high number of voters in the register is a political bargaining chips in Nigeria? I look at the voters register in a ward in gombe south senatorial district in 2010 revealed most of the faces are toddlers. Now, those guys won't be able to come out to vote on election day in this period that's harder to rig than it was in 1999 or even 2007. I participated in an off cycle senatorial election in gombe in 2010, it was so easy to rig that the PO and APO were forced to thumbprint most of the unused ballots. Now you'll call that high turn out? Whether you agree or not, elections are not perfect, but are becoming more credible than it was before. |
