PoliticsRe: I Will Use A Contractionary Monetary Policy To Fight Inflation - Peter Obi by DesignMaestro(m): 12:58am On Sep 06, 2022
sanpipita:
Expansionary monetary policy is what Buhari has been doing, that's why our inflation is high and currency value low, if we want to fighting inflation contractionary policy is the way, many economics agree to this
Yes, but the government has not been able to solve the main issues; security, power supply and import reduction. That is why we are in the situation we are today. Farmers can't go to farm due to insecurity, companies are folding up due to poor power supply, we import almost everything, etc.

In this kind of situation, putting more money in circulation without solving the above issues will keep weakening the naira, yes, but should we further tighten the purse?

There is high level of unemployment and purchasing power is low. So it is right for government to adopt an expansionary monetary policy but government's spending should be largely on improving infrastructure, power supply and tackling insecurity. If these are done and more fund is made available to local farmers and manufactures with low interest rate, there will be more employment, demand for foreign exchange will reduce, naira will begin to regain its value and purchasing power of the masses will increase.

Forget about those economists that support contractionary monetary policy for Nigeria's current situation. Most of them are theorists. Such policy will further raise the inflation and cause more hardship to the people.

Do you think the current inflation is caused by too much money available for people to spend (high demand) or high cost of getting products to the retailer's shelve?

The policy only works if there is too much money in circulation and people's purchasing power becomes higher, (may be due to increment in wage, payment of arrears, increase in employment rate, etc.) leading to increase in demand and consequent rise in price. In advanced countries, e.g. USA where people spend more, government takes this step to control inflation.

Even in Nigeria, in the 70's during economic boom, people spent on luxury goods due to high purchasing power. But what the military government did was imposition of price control in order to prevent inflation. They also tried to encourage local production by establishing manufacturing industries (We were not practicing capitalism then).

The expansionary policy is not the issue. The problem with Buhari's administration is poor policy implementation.

People are talking about how the policy will make economic growth slower, is our economic fast growing today? his idea is to crash inflation and the policy gives the desired effect
It is obvious you don't understand his point. The contractionary monetary policy is used to reduce purchasing power of the people in an economy where excess demand has led to rise in price of goods and services (Inflation). This is done by reducing money in circulation.

In our own case, people's purchasing power is low. The inflation is caused by high cost of importation and insufficient local production. You can't reduce money in circulation in an economy where there is shortage of money already.

Expansionary monetary policy, which is the opposite of what he said, is even what we need right now to stimulate the economy and thereby raise the purchasing power of the people.

It is true this man just speaks to impress his audience. How can you be speaking and be contradicting yourself?

1. You said you will adopt contractionary monetary policy thereby reducing money in circulation. This policy is adopted in an economy where inflation is caused by too much money in circulation. Example, increase in the purchasing power of the masses which leads to increase in demand and consequent increase in price of goods and services. It is a policy which is adopted in a period of economic prosperity (when people earn more money) in order to curb inflation.

In our own case here, Nigeria is not producing enough for its consumption and people's purchasing power is low. The major cause of the current inflation is high cost of production/importation not a rise in demand.

The obvious thing for a reasonable government is to encourage local production. Fix power issue, fix secury challenges and improve infrastructure; also make fund available for local farmers and SME's.

2. He stated that SME' s will be encouraged. How do you encourage them other than making fund easily accessible to them? With your contractionary monetary policy whereby interest rate is increased and lending is made more difficult, how do you encourage the survival of SME's?

CrimeCelebrities With No Sense - Delta State Police Spokesperson Replies Paul Okoye by DesignMaestro(op): 9:06pm On Sep 05, 2022
The spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Edafe Bright has fired back at Nigerian music star Paul Okoye.
Okoye of the group PSquare had cried foul over the arrest of rapper, Ice Prince

In a post shared via his Instagram Stories on Sunday, September 4, 2022, the singer said if a police officer enters his car and tells him to drive off, he'll assume the officer is a kidnapper.

The only reason a police officer will stop you and enter your car is just because they are looking for an avenue to negotiate for a crime you did not commit," he wrote.

"As long as a policeman enters my car and tells me to drive, he's a criminal or kidnapper."

While reacting to the post, Edafe likened Okoye to a category of celebrities without sense.

"Celebrities with no sense," he tweeted.

Okoye's post is coming days after Ice Prince was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

According to a statement released by the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, the music star abducted and threatened to throw an officer into the river after he was stopped for driving without a license.

"At 3 am today, @Iceprincezamani was stopped for driving without license plates. He agreed to be taken to the station. He, thereafter, abducted the police officer in his car, assaulted him and threatened to throw him in the river. He has been arrested and would be arraigned today," he tweeted.

The music star was later arraigned and remanded at the Ikoyi Prison till his bail conditions are met.

BusinessRe: HELP! I Got Charged $10 By Gtb For Receiving Find From Payoneer by DesignMaestro(m): 6:56am On Sep 04, 2022
It is payoneer that charged you $10 not GTB. You should contact their customer care reps since amount you are withdrawing is more can $500. Moreover, you said GTB staff told you to contact the sender. Payoneer are criminals. How I wish we have plethora of options.

If you are withdrawing your earning in dollars and the amount is not more than $500, they will rip you off. Unless you withdraw into your Naira account which they will give you far too low exchange rate.

I think that is insane. They are just exploiting us. But do we have choice? Freelancing from Nigeria is difficult. Imagine you earn $100 from Fiverr. FIVERR charge $3 for withdrawal to payoneer and payoneer gives you two terrible options:

1. Withdraw to your Naira account at the rate of NGN406 or
2. Withdraw to your domiciliary account and be charged $10 since the amount is not more than $500.

However, it is still mathematically better to withdraw into your domiciliary and pay $10 than to withdraw at N406 per dollar.

Imagine if one can work on fiverr from Nigeria and withdraw directly into his Nigerian domiciliary account with no third party.

Lagos government is not building Eko Atlantic. A private company is building it. Bola TINUBU brought Chagoury group to develop the city and land reclamation began in 2008 (Where was Ambode then?). By 2014, three towers were being built already. Afren, Eko pearl 1 and 2.

We are not children that swallows every lie and smiles, even when they know their daddy is lying. A simple Google search shows that a private firm built the Eko Atlantic which Tinubu is laying claims to. Lagos state government was only a partner, and even the almighty Federal government, with funds pulled from all parts of Nigeria are also partners in the deal.

It is Akinwumi Ambode that should be laying claims to Eko Atlantic city. The same man Tinibu booted out of office.

Let's check well before accepting information where politicians will be claiming other people's achievements to deceive us all.
Don't be dumb. Nobody says he built Eko Atlantic City. He conceived the idea as a permanent solution to ocean surge and invited private sector to partner with the state government in reclaiming the land and building a new city on it. That's pure ingenuity.

Now hear more. Chagoury, a Lebanese billionaire bought the idea and his company, South Energyx Nig. Ltd., are the developers of the city. They are selling the land to other developers who will build on it and make profit. Land reclamation work started in 2008 during Fashola's first term and construction of the first tower, Afren tower (Alpha One) began during his tenure.

Today, many giant real estate firms have bought land there and already started construction work on their sites.

Some of you will be claiming to be smart and intelligent but your utterances will be proving contrary. How will a government be building a whole city with tax payers money? This is 21st century not some 70's or 80's when military government where building Abuja.

Administrative Reforms:

The Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration from inception drew up a clear and focused Action Plan for the state in conjunction with critical stake holders including the Organized Private Sector, civil society groups and the public service. The result was the evolution of the Ten-Point Agenda focusing on Education, Health care, Job creation/poverty alleviation, Power and water supply, Public transportation/Traffic management, Physical Planning/Environmental renewal, Infrastructure renewal, Justice/Law and order, Food security and public sector reforms.

Tinubu’s visionary administration re-structured the machinery of government creating new ministries such as Housing, Physical Planning Sports and Youth Development as well as Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation for more effective policy implementation. Asiwaju Tinubu brought seasoned and accomplished technocrats into government as Commissioners and Special Advisers in their areas of expertise.

He created 37 new Local Development Council Areas bringing the total number of Local Government Areas in the state to 57 in order to accelerate grassroots development.

He successfully sustained and nurtured them to maturity despite the fierce opposition of the Federal Government that illegally withheld N24 billion of the state’s Local Government Statutory Allocation for two years despite a Supreme Court directive to the contrary.
Why it is right to say Bola Tinubu is the architect of modern Lagos:
- Transformed the state from federal allocation dependence to self sustaining
- After transforming the state to one of Africa’s largest economies, he created the opportunity for his successors to embark on landmark projects that would bring further development to the state
- He endorses the election of technocrats of proven competence as governors of the state. Thereby promoting continuity and economic progress of the state
- He created policies that encouraged private sector participation in developmental projects
- He initiated projects that transformed the city, e.g. Lekki FTZ, BRT, Light Rail, Eko Atlantic City, etc.
- He opened up the Lekki corridor for investors in real estate to maximize it’s potentials and today it is referred to as the ‘New Lagos'
- His polices have brought prosperity to the state and also created thousands of direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians
- His dynamic, visionary and innovative leadership has lifted the state from decades of stagnation to one of Africa’s largest economies
I can go on and on…….

Environment:

“Where others see problem, a genius sees opportunity”

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu ingeniously transformed some of Lagos’ worst environmental challenges to prosperity. Lagoon bank that stretches along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Victoria Island was a refuse site prior to 1999. He issued drainage clearance to private sectors to develop the corridor and today the waterfront boasts of iconic structures such as the civic center tower, boat club, Oriental hotel and others.

There was a perennial flood at the Bar Beach, which not only destroyed properties on Ahmadu Bello Way, forcing the Federal Government as well as state governments to abandon their guest houses and liaison offices along that stretch but also threatened the submergence of large swathes of Victoria Island. The Federal Government annually spent about N4 billion to pour sand into the ocean to prevent flooding to no avail. At the request of the Tinubu administration, the Federal Government handed over the beach to Lagos State and a bar beach flood prevention line was first constructed later this challenge was transformed into the ongoing construction of the Eko Atlantic City, a brand new city emerging from the bowels of the ocean.

In efforts to combat flood, he embarked on massive construction of new drainage channels as well as the creation of Drain Ducks and the Emergency Flood Abatement (EFAG) to clear existing drains and respond to flooding.

Revenue Generation:

The total budget size of Lagos State at the inception of the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration in 1999 was a little over N14 billion while the state’s Internally Generated Revenue was approximately N600 million monthly. Yet, the monthly public sector wage bill was N800 million. The implication was that Lagos state was entirely dependent on allocation from the centre, which was grossly insufficient to meet the huge challenge of re-building a state that had been neglected and allowed to decay for over two decades. Eight years later under Asiwaju’s astute guidance, Lagos had become financially viable and autonomous of the federal government.
Tinubu Administration grew the budget size of Lagos State from N14.200 billion in1999 to N240.866 billion in 2007.

As a first class financial strategist, Asiwaju Tinubu, through creative and innovative financial engineering, took Lagos from a yearly Internally Generated Revenue of N14.64 billion in 1999 to N60.31 billion in 2006. By March 2007, the state had achieved a monthly Internally Generated Revenue of N8.2 billion.

This impressive revenue performance achieved by the Tinubu Administration in Lagos State did not happen by chance or luck. It was due to carefully thought out and effectively implemented policies such as
- the introduction of the Electronic Banking System/Revenue Collecting Monitoring Project,
- computerization of the revenue collection process,
- introduction of Electronic Tax Receipts,
- re-organization and professionalization of the former Board of Internal Revenue now the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service,
- tax administration reforms
- the creation of robust data base of tax payers.

Tinubu, blazed the trail in the independent power project (IPP), which continually supplied 270 megawatts of electricity to the national grid. The project demonstrated the capacity of some states to generate electricity, if the power to legislate on it is on the concurrent list. PoliticsHighlight Of Bola Tinubu's Achievements As Lagos State Governor (part One) by DesignMaestro(op):
Former Lagos State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s achievements as governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 will be highlighted in this thread (in parts). Many critics have argued that Lagos, being a former capital of Nigeria was already developed and downplayed the impact of the former governor on the development of the city.

No doubt Lagos has been the most developed city in Nigeria since late 19th century, even before many parts of the present day Nigeria began to experience modern civilization. It was also the capital of Nigeria from 1914 till 1990.
It particularly experienced huge infrastructural development in the 1970’s during the era of oil boom. However, its glory began to fade afterwards.

An unprecedented surge in population caused by continuous immigration of people from different parts of the country and neighbouring West African countries turned the city to an unpleasant place to live. The federal government also shifted its attention to building a new federal capital territory in Abuja at the time that Nigeria was facing economic crisis.

From 1990 when Lagos ceased to be the federal capital, the city had become infamous for overpopulation, traffic congestion, poor transport system, poor waste management, high rate of crime and decaying infrastructure.

Many of those who have governed the state had made efforts in tackling the challenges facing the city. Late Alhaji Lateef Jakande in particular did well in aspects of housing and infrastructure. He also proposed a monorail to ease transportation challenges in the city. However, the city remained a shadow of itself for many years.

When Bola Ahmed Tinubu began his journey as the executive governor of Lagos state, he was met with the following challenges and many more:

- Dilapidated roads
- Disorganized transportation system dominated by molue and danfo buses
- Dwindling internally generated revenue
- Poor healthcare services
- High crime rate
- A city buried in heap of refuse due to poor waste disposal and waste management system
- Overwhelming environmental challenges
- Decaying infrastructure in public schools
- Mismanagement and corrupt practices in the state civil service
- Poor welfare for civil servants
- Dearth of foreign investment and closing down of private businesses due to poor infrastructure and high crime rate.
I will highlight his achievements in tackling these challenges and why he is rightly regarded as the architect of modern Lagos.
