aonag: Hello house I am torn between installing Solar or buying a new generator that can power 8 bedroom country home duplex. I am wondering which would be best in long run considerimg epileptic power supply in rural areas and also the fact that having a generator with that kind of capacity and probably just using it for 3months a year... lLike howm Kw/H are you contemplating in using, basically in this day and age there should be no doubts to using renewable energy. my pros, a) No Noise b) One time buy (i.e you only buy it once and if it is a quality buy 25yrs warranty ) c) No servicing except probably cleaning the panels D) No pollution E) if your roof is facing the optimal location Space is also saved and if it is offgrid with enough batteries you are good to go and if you are not around the intelligent MPPT controls eeverything for you The cons High Purchase price. The difference lies in the hand buying a Generator of that high capacity is a no no for me alone the noise ,pollution and because it is a moving machine it will require regurlar servicings and the worst of it buying diesel to fuel it. If one now calculate how much you spend on fueling and servicing why not then do d needful and go for Solar |

dejavus: Ermmm I think you got what the original poster said wrong.
He's merely pointing out that if you got some "paid" help in the actual act or carrying out the work done then he's suggesting its not entirely DIY except that definition fits the description of Doing it yourself in the Nigerian Context.
But what Nigerians general mean when they are talking about DIY is buying the materials themselves and employing some local people giving them instructions of what you need them to do rather than calling them to quote and carry out a job for you.
My 2 pence. The only person that got the drift |

earthrealm: guess i am joinging the party too late, i belong to so many car forums, and is norml for most of them to overhaul/rebuild their engines,..while here ordinary to change engine oil or transmission fluid, people balk at it. it all boils down to common sense, dont tackle what you know/feel you are not qualified for.
i designed and installed my inverter/solar system by myself, used a local electrician to do the nitty gritty jobs like climbing inside ceiling to run cables, and climb the roof to mount the solar panels...to some others its a mission impossible, to me its a piece of cake I just came back from Naija and did my DIY with the cameras and network as well as the satellite installation and the preparation of my Solar which i did myself but the climbing and cable laying stuff was also done by people i specifically instrusted IT is my niche so the configuration of the router and VPN was done by me i can watch my house in Naija from my Base which i tested and it is working perfectly. |

Understanding the basic concept of something why learning on youtube is all well and good but someone needs years of experience b4 he can be called a professional. because if the unexpected will happen one has who to hold responsible but for stuff like house building or complete car pimping, one needs a specialist at the side |
