A lot of people on nairaland lack simple comprehension skills. Could this be due to hunger or what? A man cried out that his wife got a sextoy as souvenir at a wedding she attended everybody thinks it was the couple that received the sextoy as wedding gift. What is so difficult in reading and comprehension

This is one of the stories I read on this forum and I am excited..

Good write up well explained, use of tense and punctuations....

Bro be it as it is please consider being a writer ... For you are good

I think he already aspires towards that. You can see by the transition in the storyline that he is trying to apply a writer's finesse to story. Didn't do badly too. But it's a trifle too obvious and rather gets in the way of the tale. The idea is to tell a story without appearing to be telling a story.

Another thing... "a coy smile on his mouth" is rather clumsy. "Smile" goes with "lips" or better yet "face"

Nice try, though. You fall, you get up.

Shouldn't the supposed "selling Nnamdi Kanu out" tell you that the ruling class don't care what happens to members of their ethnic group if it doesn't relate to them? Why then, would they even care about a random Igbo man being made SGF? Or do you think Senator Avaribe signed Kanu's bond because he was Igbo? Nah. He wanted to take advantage of the Igbo masses. He could care less whatever happened to Kanu, left to him.

Seriously, its not that hard to understand
.

Powerful analysis and point-blank rendering of the truth of the matter.
Like Falana said, Religion, Tribe & Gender (differences) do not exist in the drawing-rooms of the rich (political class). They are only used as gimmicks to divide and rule the poor masses and the sheeple who constantly endanger life and limb on the fabled altar of tribe and religion, fighting for self-serving politicians who care nothing about them.

Thank you for understanding. Honestly I am happy you understood me

I think we all pretty much understand. Trouble is, there people for whom it's a touchy subject. They react predictably. They list all the different languages in the world in addition to the over 240 ethnic tongues spoken in Nigeria.

But I fail to see their grouse. Rather, I see someone fighting a losing battle. Competence in English will always remain a symbol of the class of education one has in Nigeria. Whether you like it or not. If you go through Nursery, Primary, Secondary, & University & still can't get your tenses right, then your overall IQ needs to be questioned. Why? Cos English features in all levels of our academic lives. Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Literature etc are all taught & learned in English in this country...& before you can attain any degree of competence in those subjects, you must have a decent grip on comprehension of English. Why? Cos textbooks for Nigerian students are written in English not Igbo, Hausa, Ijaw, etc.

This whole disdain for English is the greatest enabler of the low performance in schools today. Chinua Achebe was powerful in his use of his local tongue, but that never dismissed his equally powerful handling of the English language. There's no crime in being bi- or even multy-lingual. Matter of fact only those with higher intelligence can handle more than one language.

Do you guys have issue with comprehension? I am not shallow. How can I use English to judge a person? Does that make any sense?

I was talking about the annoying thing we keep hearing people on this forum saying, that English is not our language? So let them say it? What exactly is the language? Don't say pidgin English because that's just modified English.

The truth is that Nigeria only has one language that unites us and that is the English language. I made reference to Kenya. If the government of Kenya today decides to stop everyone from speaking English, they have got a backup and that is Swahili.

So which is Nigeria's common language outside the English

Correct. Your head dey there.

Thing is, people who always attack the English Language as used in Nigeria are folks needing to apologize for their incompetence in usage. It's just plain reverse-inferiority complex. They get a heart attack each time the matter is raised. And don't be fooled by those who can write impeccably...cos perhaps speaking it is their challenge. So we all turn to promoting the local culture as a way to disguise our insecurities and shortcomings. It's all very psychological. But you have to be smart to decipher the currents underneath the cool exterior.

Music/Radio / Re: NBC Shuts Down Show On Radio Discussing "Asaba Massacre" by devvland(m): 8:48pm On Oct 05, 2017
Tolexander:
Holocaust discussion and debate on DW were arranged for objective reasons and not subjective reasons.

Discussed by historians, not just anyone. And not for the aim of setting a race, tribe and others against another one.

On point and very intelligently rendered. The NBC has the mandate to foster unity among Nigerians by regulating broadcast content in order to ensure that ethnic sensibilities are not ruffled. It is the professional responsibility of a trained broadcaster to not air material that will cause disaffection among the people's of Nigeria.

Discussing the civil war massacres on air is an irresponsible thing to do. But it's a populist gimmick that a crafty broadcaster who wishes to garner popularity and a large following would do. He may not necessarily do it cos he cares; but probably to gain the affection of a segment of society and to obtain the image of a people's champion and speaker of truth.

The people are gullible. Everybody uses them. In the end the people suffer after conflicts begin to erupt. Nigeria is at a volatile place right now: its like the country is sitting on a keg of gun powder. A tiny spark can cause the greatest of explosions.

So NBC was right to stop the show. You should't syphon popularity to yourself and your station by playing on the wounds of the nation. It's vile and unethical.

Religion / Re: Are Muslims Going To Heaven? - Daddy Freeze Gives An Answer by devvland(m): 2:28pm On May 16, 2017
analice107:

Sir, What The Master means there is, the Gentles.
And, being GOOD doesn't qualify us for the kingdom of God.

And those Patriarchs you mentioned were lovers of Yahweh and they followed and obey him.

Pls remember that, at the time the Master said that, Jews never considered any none-Jew good enough for their fold, the Master was just preparing them to open up to the Gentle believers which will later join the fold. Jesus does not have any other sheep who are disobedient to him

He said "My sheep will hear my voice and will follow me".
Where ever his sheep are, when he calls them, they will hear and follow him. This is the reason you see Christians in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Afghanistan. No matter how much the Muslims kill them, many more will believe.

Christ has sheep everywhere. When they believe, they become his, no longer outsiders.

Interpret the scriptures with understanding sir.

Symbolically all true Christians are the Sheep Christ was referring to. I emphasize "true Christians" cos not all Christians are "true"; "for not all that call father father are the children of God"

When christ said: "I have other sheep who are not of this sheep pen" he was referring not merely to Gentile Christians, but to those non-Christians in the world (dead or alive) who exhibit love in the conduct.

Judging by your use of the word "patriarchs" I assume you understand that the Jewish tribe (Israel) started with Abraham. Again, I assume that you understand that before Abraham (and apart from him) the Bible recorded the existence of other righteous people who found favour with God. One of such people is Noah. Another is Enoch.

Before Christianity came to Africa, we had upright ancestors who upheld love and justice...men and women who lived for the love of the fellows. Now the question is do you really believe that a Just God will destroy all these good people (along with Noah and Enoch and even Moses) just because they did not know Christ?

The answer is no. These good people are the ones Christ was referring to when he said that he has other sheep who belong to other sheep pens. Believe it or not, it is not the pleasure of God that any soul should perish. Good people on earth who are not Christians will be judged according to natural justice while Christians who are fully aware of the gospel will be judged according to Bible principles.
Religion / Re: Are Muslims Going To Heaven? - Daddy Freeze Gives An Answer by devvland(m): 11:40am On May 16, 2017
John 10,16: There are other sheep which belong to me that are not in this sheep pen. I must bring them, too; they will listen to my voice, and they will become one flock with one shepherd. (John 10:16 GNT)

And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. (John 10:16 ESV)

Here Jesus was speaking about being the Good Shepherd. He said he has other sheep that belong to other sheep pens. A sheep pen is a enclosure for housing sheep. This signifies a body or family of followers. Please do not mistake this for worldly "sinners". The word "sheep" which contrasts with "goats" in the Bible symbolizes godly people.

So we should paraphrase Christ's words we could have something that reads like this: "I have other godly people who are not like you. I will also join them with you, and there will be one people under one God"

Although we may want to think so, but we Christians are not the only godly people in the world who are acceptable to God. If a man has love in his heart and does good to his fellows within the limits of human imperfection, God will justify such a man as a sheep. This is how Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and our African forefathers (who exalted justice, fairness & kindness) will find acceptance with God.

Even after speaking all the English language at school. That doesn't stop you from learning how to speak your mother tongue.

But if you 're allowed to use you native language in school, I'm very sure your English language speaking and writing ability wouldn't be as good as it is now.

Whatever they did then, was for your own good.

Word. So on point. Step out in any community in Imo, Abia, ANAMBRA (mark the emphasis) EBONYI, Enugu...and all you'll hear is IGBO. I keep wondering where the idea of extinction is coming from when a school child from these states cant manage a sentence in English.

And please check the posts on social media. If English is as they claim, how come you have to wear body amour to read what they write.

It's different for children born in multi-cultural cities, though. And mind you, pidgin is the culprit there, not English. Kids pick it up in the streets, but since parents wouldnt want that to damage their children's knowledge of English, they insist on good old British.

So if there was no english language, after you finish learning housa, you will go and learn yoruba, anyday you want to travel to south africa or any foreign country, you will spent atleast 1 year to learn the language of that country and so on, also imagine as we have this platform, (nairaland) you are typing in igbo and another is typing in house and yoruba, how do you think there wouldnt be a bridge in communication?

Stop trying so hard to be wiser than your masters, a general language that makes it easier to communicate globally is a sinequanon. If an african country was opportuned to be the colonial master or country, they inturn would have enforced their language on their subjects, but nature did not permit them, instead, they were busy jumping with monkeys in the bush, and when you ask them, they will say that civilisation started in africa, i tend to wonder what has stopped them from getting more civilised even with the exit of the colonial masters.

Thank you, my friend. Kinda Turing hearing all these crusaders who have no clue as to the communication mess that will exist in Nigeria without English (or pidgin). I just don't understand the hate.

This type of topic should be deleted by the moderators as its promoting slavery. English is not our language!!. It is a language forced down the throats of our ancestors when we were slaves, and as such, you shouldn't be proud speaking it.

Some of you often ask; what were our ancestors doing to have been enslaved? What they were doing is the same thing you're doing today when you promote English language or feel proud speaking it.

Our native languages are now in a sorry state, some under threat of extinction, while we're busy fooling around promoting English. I regret to have learned to speak English in school. I wish I invested all that time studying Igbo language and one other Nigerian language, like Yoruba or Hausa. If I could go back to school I'll invest my time studying our native languages.

Why didn't you type your comment in Igbo? Cultural evolution states that when two cultures interact, the stronger overwhelms the weak.

If you are so proud of your language and wish to perpetuate its usage...first you have to make your people great. Make your culture stand for something on the international front, that way other culture will be drawn to your force. This force can be economic or military or technological power. Give the world something huge so that when they come to you, you can insist on dealing with them in your language. That way they have no option to learn your language.

Learn from China. Other countries are learning Mandarin today because China has become a world power. Make your culture powerful and stop whining about your language dying while you do jack to save it except advise people to speak it...

You can whine all you want, but as long as your culture has nothing to make the world respect it. . .nothing great to offer the world, and as long as people from your culture will always reach out to the outside world for things without the outside world reaching out to your culture for something, the scale of language usage will forever disfavor your language because the natives of your culture will forever need an alternative means of communicating with the outside world...

Simple fact. Speak your native tongue within your community, but dont hate people for wanting the advantage of being able to reach our beyond the confines of rustic living (which obviously you have)

A nightmare can be bad, terrible, or horrible. It can be MOSTLY bad but never HORRIBLE. It can be usually TERRIBLE and occasionally HORRIBLE.
The choice of word depends on the intensity of experience...and the reaction of the one experiencing.

These words: BAD, TERRIBLE & HORRIBLE represent variations of unpleasantness...with different degrees of intensity. A thing can be terrible but not exactly horrible.
An experience may evoke fear (bad), terror (terrible) or horror (horrible).

Hence if a person says that a nightmare is usually horrible, they are only recognizing the fact that the intensity the nightmarish experience may be less, but is usually high.

It's a matter of feeling and opinion

1. So, if a guy doesn't feel happy, sad, moody, disappointed, angry, Hot, ecstatic, anxious, at various times he doesn't love you.
2. If he loves you so much that he flaunts you to his ex. If he thinks you're the one, and he just needs to get the pesky ex off his back, to try to convince her to move on and find love, as he has done, then he doesn't love you
3. If you so happen to be "hot" (whatever that means), and he takes you places, the same places he used to go to when he was single, He doesn't love you. If he weren't using u, he'd wrap u up like agidi and then lock you up in the house for his eyes only. (Why does that remind me of a certain religion?)
4. Of course love is not sex. He should keep visiting his exes and side chicks, whom he doesn't love, because he doesn't want to "use" you.

However...

If you teach a child about PEOPLE who BUILT cars and about how awesome cars are...and how fast they can go... After his training the child will keep WAITING for OTHERS to build cars so he can evaluate and study how fast they travel.

It's no magic. You can't give what you don't have. A bad or incompetent teacher makes a bad or incompetent student.

Don't believe the hype. Mankind has always associated darkness with danger and the perils of the unknown. In the dark you can't see cos it black everywhere.

Ancient men feared the dark too, so they kept fires to ward off the evil in the dark (wild animals and attacking enemy tribes)

But it's bright when the world is lit by the white in the sky...all fears vanish. The ancient man felt safer in daylight. He could see his enemy approaching and defend himself.

Hence, by instinct mankind began to associate daylight (white) with safety and goodness, and darkness (black) with terror and evil.

Everything is not about tribe and race and division. Sometimes things are just things. Simple.

Everybody in Nigeria wants a hand-down from the government.

A number of prestigious Universities abroad generate their own funding. University professors and researchers initiate researches and study projects that attract millions of dollars to the institutions in form of grants.

Solutions to society's problems begin with these researches and projects. When government or the private sector sees a promising research project, they provide assistance by way of funding. Private corporations invest billions of dollars to fund projects that take their interest, and the University benefits.

Here, all our professors do is copy and paste theories and research findings of their foreign counterparts in the name of writing a book.

Sometimes they assign projects to students and then compile the students' works into books, passing them off as theirs.

Our institutions lack initiative and dedicated hardwork from professionals whose only desire is to make a difference and to leave a landmark on the academic landscape. What we have are employees and staff whose only drive is to maintain a livelihood. Academic Income-earners. Dependents and floundering libidinous satyrs.

I carefully read what Atiku reportedly said. Whilst I neither love nor loathe him, I totally agree with everything he reportedly said. Most Nigerian university graduates are certificated but uneducated. To cite an example, the other day, the HOD of English at Uni Ilorin, one Dr Idiagbon, responded in a video recording to allegations of sexual misconduct. It's hard to believe that guy was HOD English. Besides, many Nigerian university graduates lack critical thinking and logical reasoning. I've written here in the past about shoddy publications of Nigerian university lecturers and professors - the quality is simply abysmal.

Preach it my friend. Education improves your mind and elevates your reasoning. It helps you process a mental task with better dexterity... High IQ for mathematics and science can only be spotted in the process of good education...and after that, with reinforced focus-based instruction and guidance it can be burnished to shine bright.

An intelligent mind that lacks intelligent instruction will perform no better than a dull mind.

You're wrong. As a graduate engineer, I've taught in school. English is just a language. Moreover, if you're brought up in a family with English as the speaking language, you'll be fluent in English just like being brought up with your native language. In addition, most parents send their lads to queens school that emphasizes more on English language but not good in technical subjects. Experience has shown me that using English as a yardstick for ones intelligent academically is navety. I've seen students that can't speak good English because of family background but are very good in Maths and Physics which are my yardstick of measuring how intelligent one is expecially in science related fields. Little wonder most schools give little emphasis on English as their selection criteria with respect to engineering and science courses. Futhermore in my field, I've seen some expertriate (Chinese) that cannot speak good English but they're technically and computationally sound! Finally what develops a country is how technically engaged they citizens are, not how fluent they speak a language like English.

You are missing the point, bro.
This entire thread is a focus on education as a decaying system with English as a case study. Not a focus on IQ. But of course I understand how the issue ruffles your feathers.
