Poshriel: I think he already aspires towards that. You can see by the transition in the storyline that he is trying to apply a writer's finesse to story. Didn't do badly too. But it's a trifle too obvious and rather gets in the way of the tale. The idea is to tell a story without appearing to be telling a story. Another thing... "a coy smile on his mouth" is rather clumsy. "Smile" goes with "lips" or better yet "face" Nice try, though. You fall, you get up. 1 Like |

AnonyNymous: Powerful analysis and point-blank rendering of the truth of the matter. Like Falana said, Religion, Tribe & Gender (differences) do not exist in the drawing-rooms of the rich (political class). They are only used as gimmicks to divide and rule the poor masses and the sheeple who constantly endanger life and limb on the fabled altar of tribe and religion, fighting for self-serving politicians who care nothing about them. |

AlexandriaToria: I think we all pretty much understand. Trouble is, there people for whom it's a touchy subject. They react predictably. They list all the different languages in the world in addition to the over 240 ethnic tongues spoken in Nigeria. But I fail to see their grouse. Rather, I see someone fighting a losing battle. Competence in English will always remain a symbol of the class of education one has in Nigeria. Whether you like it or not. If you go through Nursery, Primary, Secondary, & University & still can't get your tenses right, then your overall IQ needs to be questioned. Why? Cos English features in all levels of our academic lives. Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Literature etc are all taught & learned in English in this country...& before you can attain any degree of competence in those subjects, you must have a decent grip on comprehension of English. Why? Cos textbooks for Nigerian students are written in English not Igbo, Hausa, Ijaw, etc. This whole disdain for English is the greatest enabler of the low performance in schools today. Chinua Achebe was powerful in his use of his local tongue, but that never dismissed his equally powerful handling of the English language. There's no crime in being bi- or even multy-lingual. Matter of fact only those with higher intelligence can handle more than one language. 2 Likes 1 Share |

AlexandriaToria: Correct. Your head dey there. Thing is, people who always attack the English Language as used in Nigeria are folks needing to apologize for their incompetence in usage. It's just plain reverse-inferiority complex. They get a heart attack each time the matter is raised. And don't be fooled by those who can write impeccably...cos perhaps speaking it is their challenge. So we all turn to promoting the local culture as a way to disguise our insecurities and shortcomings. It's all very psychological. But you have to be smart to decipher the currents underneath the cool exterior. 1 Like |
Music/Radio / Re: NBC Shuts Down Show On Radio Discussing "Asaba Massacre" by devvland(m): 8:48pm On Oct 05, 2017 |
Tolexander: On point and very intelligently rendered. The NBC has the mandate to foster unity among Nigerians by regulating broadcast content in order to ensure that ethnic sensibilities are not ruffled. It is the professional responsibility of a trained broadcaster to not air material that will cause disaffection among the people's of Nigeria. Discussing the civil war massacres on air is an irresponsible thing to do. But it's a populist gimmick that a crafty broadcaster who wishes to garner popularity and a large following would do. He may not necessarily do it cos he cares; but probably to gain the affection of a segment of society and to obtain the image of a people's champion and speaker of truth. The people are gullible. Everybody uses them. In the end the people suffer after conflicts begin to erupt. Nigeria is at a volatile place right now: its like the country is sitting on a keg of gun powder. A tiny spark can cause the greatest of explosions. So NBC was right to stop the show. You should't syphon popularity to yourself and your station by playing on the wounds of the nation. It's vile and unethical. 2 Likes 1 Share |
Religion / Re: Are Muslims Going To Heaven? - Daddy Freeze Gives An Answer by devvland(m): 2:28pm On May 16, 2017 |
analice107: Symbolically all true Christians are the Sheep Christ was referring to. I emphasize "true Christians" cos not all Christians are "true"; "for not all that call father father are the children of God" When christ said: "I have other sheep who are not of this sheep pen" he was referring not merely to Gentile Christians, but to those non-Christians in the world (dead or alive) who exhibit love in the conduct. Judging by your use of the word "patriarchs" I assume you understand that the Jewish tribe (Israel) started with Abraham. Again, I assume that you understand that before Abraham (and apart from him) the Bible recorded the existence of other righteous people who found favour with God. One of such people is Noah. Another is Enoch. Before Christianity came to Africa, we had upright ancestors who upheld love and justice...men and women who lived for the love of the fellows. Now the question is do you really believe that a Just God will destroy all these good people (along with Noah and Enoch and even Moses) just because they did not know Christ? The answer is no. These good people are the ones Christ was referring to when he said that he has other sheep who belong to other sheep pens. Believe it or not, it is not the pleasure of God that any soul should perish. Good people on earth who are not Christians will be judged according to natural justice while Christians who are fully aware of the gospel will be judged according to Bible principles. |

John 10,16: There are other sheep which belong to me that are not in this sheep pen. I must bring them, too; they will listen to my voice, and they will become one flock with one shepherd. (John 10:16 GNT) And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. (John 10:16 ESV) Here Jesus was speaking about being the Good Shepherd. He said he has other sheep that belong to other sheep pens. A sheep pen is a enclosure for housing sheep. This signifies a body or family of followers. Please do not mistake this for worldly "sinners". The word "sheep" which contrasts with "goats" in the Bible symbolizes godly people. So we should paraphrase Christ's words we could have something that reads like this: "I have other godly people who are not like you. I will also join them with you, and there will be one people under one God" Although we may want to think so, but we Christians are not the only godly people in the world who are acceptable to God. If a man has love in his heart and does good to his fellows within the limits of human imperfection, God will justify such a man as a sheep. This is how Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and our African forefathers (who exalted justice, fairness & kindness) will find acceptance with God. 1 Like |

bikerboy1: Word. So on point. Step out in any community in Imo, Abia, ANAMBRA (mark the emphasis) EBONYI, Enugu...and all you'll hear is IGBO. I keep wondering where the idea of extinction is coming from when a school child from these states cant manage a sentence in English. And please check the posts on social media. If English is as they claim, how come you have to wear body amour to read what they write. It's different for children born in multi-cultural cities, though. And mind you, pidgin is the culprit there, not English. Kids pick it up in the streets, but since parents wouldnt want that to damage their children's knowledge of English, they insist on good old British. 3 Likes |

musicwriter: Why didn't you type your comment in Igbo? Cultural evolution states that when two cultures interact, the stronger overwhelms the weak. If you are so proud of your language and wish to perpetuate its usage...first you have to make your people great. Make your culture stand for something on the international front, that way other culture will be drawn to your force. This force can be economic or military or technological power. Give the world something huge so that when they come to you, you can insist on dealing with them in your language. That way they have no option to learn your language. Learn from China. Other countries are learning Mandarin today because China has become a world power. Make your culture powerful and stop whining about your language dying while you do jack to save it except advise people to speak it... You can whine all you want, but as long as your culture has nothing to make the world respect it. . .nothing great to offer the world, and as long as people from your culture will always reach out to the outside world for things without the outside world reaching out to your culture for something, the scale of language usage will forever disfavor your language because the natives of your culture will forever need an alternative means of communicating with the outside world... Simple fact. Speak your native tongue within your community, but dont hate people for wanting the advantage of being able to reach our beyond the confines of rustic living (which obviously you have) 2 Likes |

Now every Tom, Dicck, & Harry is calling him the man with the midas touch. No doubt Osinbajo has a different from Buhari. But Ask yourself, though (ye that refuse to think for thyself) will Osinbajo execute any policy outside the context of Buhari's agenda? Tadeknkeepcalm: A nightmare can be bad, terrible, or horrible. It can be MOSTLY bad but never HORRIBLE. It can be usually TERRIBLE and occasionally HORRIBLE. The choice of word depends on the intensity of experience...and the reaction of the one experiencing. These words: BAD, TERRIBLE & HORRIBLE represent variations of unpleasantness...with different degrees of intensity. A thing can be terrible but not exactly horrible. An experience may evoke fear (bad), terror (terrible) or horror (horrible). Hence if a person says that a nightmare is usually horrible, they are only recognizing the fact that the intensity the nightmarish experience may be less, but is usually high. It's a matter of feeling and opinion 1 Like |

Today both polls are described as the greatest political upset of our modern time. Sometimes being vocal and loud is not the same as being true and correct. Trendirabingi: A country is as great as its youths. And the youths are as great as the education they recieve. No magic. Teach a child than he can build a car... Teach him how to build...and be sure that he will spend time after his training THINKING about building a supercar, and eventually BUILDING one. Because thats how his brain has been wired. However... If you teach a child about PEOPLE who BUILT cars and about how awesome cars are...and how fast they can go... After his training the child will keep WAITING for OTHERS to build cars so he can evaluate and study how fast they travel. It's no magic. You can't give what you don't have. A bad or incompetent teacher makes a bad or incompetent student. Today we are cheering for the N-Power program. Out of 200,000 in the first batch, 150,000 will work as teachers. Very amusing. Guess, what happens when a bad student comes a teacher...? |

toprealman: Don't believe the hype. Mankind has always associated darkness with danger and the perils of the unknown. In the dark you can't see cos it black everywhere. Ancient men feared the dark too, so they kept fires to ward off the evil in the dark (wild animals and attacking enemy tribes) But it's bright when the world is lit by the white in the sky...all fears vanish. The ancient man felt safer in daylight. He could see his enemy approaching and defend himself. Hence, by instinct mankind began to associate daylight (white) with safety and goodness, and darkness (black) with terror and evil. Everything is not about tribe and race and division. Sometimes things are just things. Simple. 1 Like |

mandarin: Everybody in Nigeria wants a hand-down from the government. A number of prestigious Universities abroad generate their own funding. University professors and researchers initiate researches and study projects that attract millions of dollars to the institutions in form of grants. Solutions to society's problems begin with these researches and projects. When government or the private sector sees a promising research project, they provide assistance by way of funding. Private corporations invest billions of dollars to fund projects that take their interest, and the University benefits. Here, all our professors do is copy and paste theories and research findings of their foreign counterparts in the name of writing a book. Sometimes they assign projects to students and then compile the students' works into books, passing them off as theirs. Our institutions lack initiative and dedicated hardwork from professionals whose only desire is to make a difference and to leave a landmark on the academic landscape. What we have are employees and staff whose only drive is to maintain a livelihood. Academic Income-earners. Dependents and floundering libidinous satyrs. 2 Likes |
