I seem not to understand why people mistake eloquence for intelligence.
English is a second language in Nigeria. You can't pick ELOQUENCE, sorry FLUENCY... You can't pick up fluency on the streets unless you want to spend the rest of your life saying: "let me come and be going, if they like let them be staying here and be speaking grammar"

See what I mean?

In Nigeria's school curriculum English is a subject like any other. It has rules and nuances and if we don't apply ourselves to study, we will never learn these foundations and will therefore always lack in those areas. This same theory applies to other subjects.

Now it is true that one can't possibly be perfect in all subjects, however, one would expect that a subject that carries others on its back and which we spend at least 15 years of our formative years learning... one would expect that we have a decent degree of mastery over it.

The fact that 80% of us lack this mastery speaks ill of both our education sector and the education we have received.
This is a question of the effectiveness of the type of education we receive in this country. Not a question of intelligence. Not exactly.

What I believe is the way an individual take education. I Alway read every day. Because you get older and you start losing your momery. So I try to read all day. to gain back my momery of event, this why I am online.

I want to remember things.

I went to school under the military, I never had civillian government education. But it looks the civilian are doing bad.
We should not shoot the messenger. Or throw away the baby with the bath water.

From all the irritation exhibited here you would think that there is no truth in Atiku's statement. But thats how Nigerians react to issues...without separating the facts from fiction.

Yes, Atiku was over praising his product...but then again he is a businessman. So no surprise there.

About Education falling behind in Nigeria... You only need to read comments on Nairaland or any other online forum (eg Facebook posts) to know it's true.

And before you start advancing the argument that knowledge of English doesn't mean knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Literature, Economics, etc, please remember that these subjects have their instruction materials prepared in English. Hence, any incompetence in English will to a great degree affect a student’s competence in these academic fields. Also before you advance the Chinese example, remember that in China students are taught with textbooks and other instruction materials prepared in the Chinese language.

Look around you. How many older folks who only attended STANDARD SIX in the old days murder grammar the way the present generation does. How many intellectuals commit lingual abominations when they open their mouth or when they write?

Today, a University graduate does not know the difference between "has" and "have" or "do" and "does". So you hear a graduate saying "I doesn't like people who has no sense". It's pathetic. The sooner we stop embracing and making excuses for mediocrity the sooner we will grow as a people.

Lastly, most people here are irritated because UNIZIK was mentioned. Let me break it to you...you are missing the point here. Stop carrying an evil child because you are the mother!!!

It is the duty of government to have in place checks to avoid famine as a result of excessive export.

So zombie who's the nitwit now huh
Suppose the government installs checks in the form of duties and border control, you'll still hear Trumpet calls of how the govt is insensitive to people's plight: "no jobs, and farmers can't even be allowed to take their produce to better markets...you don't feed us, and you don't let us feed ourselves...you are taxing Nigerians for their own sweat"

However, to be forewarned is to be forearmed. A government doesn't summarily impose duties on a hungry people. People might misunderstand it. You have to use moral suasion sometimes instead of the force of law. Sometimes delicate means are the best option in delicate times.

Only problem is we have poor concept generators and ideators. And too many people screaming for blood.

And how do you execute that conviction? By respecting their position too much and dragging feet...
? Or by doing the needful and by any means necessary?

The French Revolution wasnt the best option, but it was an effective one which changed the perception of power in Europe.

This is our revolution, even though the public is either too scared or too divided to engage and purge the political class. Power should belong to the people. But if the people are too dumbb or if propaganda has eroded their reasons so they lose focus on what their true needs are (they fight for the slave masters instead of ridding themselves of the shackles of slavery). When we refuse to dine on the table, then we must make do with crumbs the fall to the floor.

DSS operation against judges is one of such crumbs. If you like hang yourself while talk and argue the legal fineries of the matter... Point is a beggar has no choice. Better a lopsided corruption fight than no fight at all.
A couple years hence another guard will take over and if there are any monkey business today it will be "witch-hunted" down with much dexterity. That way society purges itself without realizing it and humanity is served, and eventually, the fear of repercussions (if nothing else) will sanitize the process HOPEFULLY

I look forward for the day we'll love creativity more than this English of a thing without anything to show for it.
Stop using the Chinese stereotype to justify an educated Nigerian's inability to use the language of 18 years (primary, secondary & University) instruction. Nobody speaks English in Japan or China. Same way nobody speaks German or Dutch here.

Whether or not you make an exhibition of your language skills is up to you, but if you are learned and you still cock up your English bad...then it is what it is. You are justified to feel how you feel.

Its not a question of "offing" but that of timing. Girls want to swallow a house first...guys want them to nibble a teaspoon. However, everyone seems to agree that offing pant is a legal tender with unquestionable purchasing powers. Nice.

But you...?

Your pastor is a ritualist. You know it but you still go to him for prayers cos he's got miracles...and you're nuts for miracles

You don't tape your s3x scenes but theh are more vivid then vivid entertainment...and more Indecency than Pornhub. You bedroom vibes will make ports tar blush. Yet you are single. Or married with side game.

You've never written an exam yourself in your entire life. Malpractice all the way. And last time you voted, you sold it to the rich politician.

You have a shop. You do business. 99% of your merchandise is sub-standard or pure fake.

You lie like a script for a Nollywood movie. No truth to be found in your mouth. It's who you are.

You have a kid staying with you that doesn't belong to you. So you treat him like dirt. It's a tough world and you can't waste love on a brat that's not your own child. So he sleeps on the floor and eats the leftovers from your Table.

Etcetera etcetera...

Yet you have the righteousness send SOMEONE ELSE to hell for just squeezing a woman's yansh. Well done. Saint Michael.

No wonder Buhari says that change begins with YOU
TravelRe: 12 Things Every Nigerian That Came Back With A Foreign Accent Will Get by devvland(m): 10:24am On Sep 11, 2016
wayodude:
If by definition, 'Nigerian accent' includes wrongly pronounced words or Nigerian manufactured words e.g

Assume; Naija man = azz-hume
Siren; Naija man = sigh-reeeeen
Her; Naija man = Haa!
Sewage; Naija man = Seee-wage!
Plumber; Naija man = Plum-bah!

Or

Indicator; Naija man = Trafficator lol

Etc etc

When all these are 'corrected' by being exposed for several years (I reckon about 10yrs minimum) to the English language being spoken properly, what you find is you are unable to go back to saying 'Plum-bah' just to please some home based disgruntled folk. This is regardless of age.

The difference being described by some about age is simply that the younger you are when you move to the UK/US the quicker you adapt to the change and you also forget those Nigerianisms in your speech ever existed. This is different for the older guys who will always remember Naijas say plum-bah lol

Finally the older you are when you relocate the less likely it is that you will forge close friendships with the locals in your new location. So you find the older folk upon relocation only/mainly keep Nigerian 'plum-bah and see-wage' saying friends, and this stops or slows down any improvement in their speech.

In conclusion, returnees who have lived abroad in an English speaking country for over 10 yrs and interacted extensively with the locals would stillbe able to speak Nigerianised English if they tried BUT believe it or not, it is no longer their default lingua.
Gbam!
A Daniel is come to judgment.
Thanks for making my Sunday, bro.

In addition, there are those at home who try to overcome their Nigerian mother-tongue interference in their spoken English... Those who, for instance say "plumma" instead of "plumba" (for plumber). If I know the correct way to pronounce a word, why should I pronounce it incorrectly just to please some "disgruntled" slowpoke? It's a confidence thing. You mock and hate what you can't conquer.

I'm sure to an Anambra man it's OK to say "zelo" for "zero". And if I insist on saying "zero" he'll make fun of me and say that I too dey form.

Same for an Osun man who says "hactivate" for "activate. Or a Kaduna man who says "feffa" for "paper".

Guys... Don't hate. Run in your own lane. No be by force to speak good English. If you no Sabi...own it but don't knock people who try to speak a language well. It's a confidence thing. Just do you.

And from your village you travel to warri at 20 and still learn the Waffi pidgin even though all you knew previously was your village version of "broken english"
How's that possible?

Just because we can't do something, let's not mock it and deride those who can. Some people spend 18 years getting educated (primary, secondary, university) yet they can't spit a word of English... When they hear someone else speak with ease, they mock them, while secretly wishing they could be that good.

Naija is full of haters... Puzzies who hate other Puzzies and criticize them for being Puzzies.

A Flaw: is a good character is not applied appropriately with the right balance
FLAW. How is she flawed? Because she knows her worth and wishes to valued for it? Because she speaks her mind? Because she seems to insist to be treated right? Because she sounds intelligent and has presented and marshalled her thoughts with unerring precision? If you love those qualities you wouldn't be so quick to assume they would easily degenerate to FLAWS.

We admire brilliance from a distance. We hate to have it stand next to us cos it shines bright and illuminates all our own flaws, inadequacies and pretences.

If that lady was a man nobody would call her flawed. In fact everybody here would be admiring her level headedness. But we have such double standards...that confidence and self-esteem (the cardinal traits for strong human personality) are a flaw in a woman. Funny thing is we don't even see that our perception is flawed. It's a shame.

@OP; what I’m going to say first might come out a bit harsh but permit me as no offence and hope none taken.

Young lady, it’s not rocket science for one to deduce the tone in your write-up as commanding (you might not have intended for it to be that way). Any wonder why your BF's brother mentioned that you’re controlling? Sometimes, we might not even know we have certain character flaws until it’s pointed out to us and when that occurs, all we need to do is work on them rather than being defensive (Not saying you are). Just had to mention this first before I made my comment . That said let’s move on swiftly.

My question to you would be are you prepared to fight this battle? Best believe, family have their own influence. Some men are able to put their family at arms length in connection to their intending spouse/partner (especially if their family don't like them) whilst some struggle to do that. The question is which category does your man fall into?
Another thing I noticed in your write-up which is a bit worrying is your not having complementary words to say about your man’s family? Ok see your own quotes below;
His father, step mother and brother are very difficult people.
They are uncompromising and closed minded.
Seeing that his family doesn't see my value is very disappointing to say the least.
I expected much more because I know I'm worth much more.

Oh please give me a break. So far, you’ve described your family as a peaceful one, but only negative so far about your intended in-laws; WHY? Is it because there is nothing positive to say about this family? I’m a bit taken aback as this is the family you intend to marry into hence, look for positive things to say about them. How does your man feel about this on-going saga of non acceptance between you and his family? It’s going to be a hard nut for you to crack. I’ll strictly tell you that if you’re marrying into a family that don’t like you, you might encounter problems for a long while to come (I might be right as well as wrong) but only time will tell. I have seen some women toil this part and some have been married for years and their in-laws still never liked them despite them even having children in the union.

Think very well and hard if you are up for that struggle and if you are, then all well and good; follow your heart but note that love is not enough as you yourself have attested to the fact that you’re not only marrying your man but you're also marrying his family. Are you ready to be uncomfortable among your intended in-laws for a long while to come? Bear in mind that assumptions may be made when problems arise, and the in-laws will tell your man we told you so; as your family are not giving you the go ahead either they might also say we told you so as well.

Your parents are already seeing the problems that may occur and giving you the warning signs to move on but they might be right as well as wrong. Only you can make that final decision as they can only give guidance but the decision stops at your door step as only you will be in that marital home.

I’ll strongly suggest you try and iron this unlikeness between you and your intended in-laws before you take the final “I DO” step as MARRIAGE IS NOT A BED OF ROSES. As a saying goes "If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen". Think very carefully before you make your decision on whether you'll go ahead with him or find someone else. DON'T IGNORE THE SIGNS.

I rest my case
Nigerian men so hate it when a woman has guts and brains. And Nigerian women cant bear it when their fellow is shining.

All these people trying to twist the lady's words, forming Shylock and James Bond put together, first ask yourselves: what am I afraid of? Why do I feel the need to attack this woman? The answer to those questions are perhaps some of the reasons her BF's brother and family are uneasy.

People fear what they don't know, and hate what they can't conquer. Haven't known the OP for more than five minutes but I can see she has a good head on her shoulders. Something most women lack. Any confident, intelligent, strong, wise, independent-minded man will be blessed to have her as a wife.

The gospel of the christ was about making disciples for Christ, not just preaching. Most of them hardly convert, but they will preach throughout their lives. Of what benefits?
Also, who are they really preaching to and what are they preaching? Christians? And what they are preaching? If you notice very well, they are preaching to those who already accepted christ, and they hardly preach repentance but hope of a nice future goes unfulfilled because those messages they send out are figment of people's imagination, not real.

But someone or another religious organisation will not engage in door to door work like they do, but increases more than them, why? Isn't something in their methods?
You think the size of your church makes your teaching right?

Broad is the way that leads to condemnation (and many people walk on it), but narrow is the path that leads to life.

Op, you shouldn't even be with someone if you're so afraid to ask em questions about something that is bothering you, number one!

Number two, what Uncle? (Who should be playing the role of a father) Wouldn't want his daughter to be engaged and get married in the nearest future?

Number three, what Uncle doesn't realise she is a grown woman and has every right to have a boyfriend if she even has plans of marriage in the future. Her Uncle should even encourage her and meet her "serious" boyfriend, giving him rules and asking him to treat her right because she is his daughter.

Op, your suspicious are sensible. I am equally convinced she is having a sexual relationship with her Uncle.

Ask her the questions and tell her, you will not be able to cope. Somehow, you're going to have to threaten to leave her if she doesn't stop and realise threatening to leave her means you will propose to be paying her bills ( at least the bills her Uncle pays-which clearly keeps her indebted to him because he is a dirty sick man).

Try that, if she agrees to stop it and even start avoiding her uncle. Please, seriously pay her bills and allow her focus on just you. If she gets mad and doesn't even give you a sensible explanation, prepare yourself for a break up. Because even after you marry her, she will continue fucking her Uncle and might possibly Bleep your own Uncle too.

Bonjour. smiley
Seriously pay her bill....? Is she up for the highest bidder? Like the biggest spender gets the girl? Really? This is the advice we are giving?

Our values in this country are so... We'll, what am I saying? What do you expect? No surprise. A country we're individuals have no self-esteem or respect.

If a man has to pay a woman's bills to keep her, then how is she different from a prostitute. And how is he different from a LovePeddler-monger.

If you can't be with him when he is in lack, then you don't deserve to be with him when he is in cash.

Our social values are messed up. That's why a girl allows herself to remain in poverty while she waits for a man to come and save her.
