Was Nigeria's government hoodwinked over Boko Haram 'truce'?


...The government's blindness -- willful or otherwise -- to that fact should alarm us all. But it's not very surprising.
At every turn the Nigerian government -- everything from the president's office, to the military, and intelligence services -- has demonstrated that it is as confused as the rest of us.
We see this not just in the desperation, at the highest levels, to believe anything regardless of how implausible it sounds, but also in the supremely careless manner in which information regarding the crisis continues to be managed.
If the past is anything to go by, I'm certain we haven't seen the last of the "ceasefire" announcements....

Boko Haram said to seize another town in northern Nigeria



Niamey (AFP) - Islamist extremist group Boko Haram has seized control of a Nigerian town near the Niger border, leading soldiers to flee and adding to its expanding reach in the region, an official said Saturday.

The insurgents were said to have taken control of Malam Fatori in Nigeria's northeastern Borno state after fighting on Wednesday and Thursday, a senior official in the Niger town of Diffa near Nigeria told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The fighting killed dozens and wounded about 30 people in the a commercial hub known for fishing and farming, the Anfani radio station in Diffa reported.

"The town of Malam Fatori was taken by Boko Haram after violent fighting with the Nigerian army overnight Wednesday to Thursday," said the official in Diffa, where thousands of refugees from the conflict have fled to.

According to the official, 315 Nigerian soldiers fled over the border to Diffa. Thirteen who were wounded were treated in a Diffa hospital, while the others have been repatriated.

The official's version of events differed from the one given by a Nigerian senator, who on Thursday spoke of the attack but did not say that the town had been taken.

Senator Maina Maaji Lawan said the insurgents met stiff resistance from soldiers from a multi-national task force in the region that includes troops from Nigeria, Chad and Niger.

Lawan however also said that soldiers were later forced to flee after being overpowered by the insurgents. He said that 21 civilians were killed.

Adamawa State Governor Bala Ngilary says Boko Haram insurgents have overrun five local government areas of the state.
He said this in an interview with State House journalists today after the flag-off ceremony of the National Power Sector Apprenticeship Scheme (NAPSAS) held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Ngilari, who lamented that terrorist attacks had become a very big challenge for his state, asked the Federal Government to deplore more troops there.
Describing the security situation in the state as very daisy and worrisome, the governor said though his administration was trying its best to manage it, a lot of interventions were needed.

Nigeria does not qualify to be on this thread. They have no military.

On Friday vigilantes in the Borno town of Biu said they and troops had decapitated 41 Boko Haram fighters who were planning a raid in the village of Sabon Gari, in the south of the state.

Two residents said the heads were put on spikes and paraded through the town.

"It was like hunters displaying their game after a hunting expedition," Silas Buba, a resident, said.

Human Rights Watch, the US-based rights monitor, said the alleged beheadings were consistent with the vigilantes' recent conduct.

Boko Haram suspects found dead after arrest by Nigerian army


Eighteen men arrested by soldiers in north-east Nigeria have been found dead hours after being taken into custody, residents in the town of Potiskum say.
All the bodies had gunshot and knife wounds, they said.
The men had earlier been accused of being members of the militant Islamist group Boko Haram.
The Nigerian military has denied killing them and announced the release of more than 40 others who had been suspected of links with the militants.
Two residents of Potiskum, who told the BBC they had identified 18 bodies in the town's morgue, said the men had been arrested on Wednesday by the Nigerian military during a search operation.
A nurse at the morgue was quoted by AFP news agency as saying the bodies had been brought in by soldiers.
'Cold-blooded murder'
The news agency said community leaders believed the men had been killed because they were from the Kanuri ethnic group from which Boko Haram draws many of its members.
They have demanded an inquiry into the deaths.
Funerals for victims of Potiskum bomb attack
Funerals were held on Tuesday for those killed in the previous day's attack in Potiskum
"We believe they were killed on suspicion of being Boko Haram because they were Kanuris," AFP quoted an unnamed community leader as saying.
Another said: "The government should look into this cold-blooded murder and ensure justice is done because being a soldier is not a licence to kill at will on mere suspicion."
Atrocities
Potiskum is the commercial centre of Yobe state and has been the scene of many attacks by Boko Haram, including a suicide bombing on Monday in which 15 people died.
The Nigerian army has been conducting a war against the group and has frequently been accused of committing atrocities itself, including torture and beheadings.
It denies doing so.
In the city of Maiduguri, which has been at the centre of the insurgency, the army said it had released 42 people who had earlier been accused of being members of Boko Haram.
They were given more than $1,000 (£631) each by the military and the local government.

I said the IGIRIGI isn't an ugly LAV, and infact, it is a better looking LAV when compared to the cobra which is, in it's category.

Instead, you went on to post a photo of an 8x8 to compare with the IGIRIGI.

My point has been, the IGIRIGI isn't an Ugly APC, and can perform very well the functions it is designed to perform.

I never compared ANYTHING. You did.

My point was and is simple. The Igirigi is UGLY. You can't argue it beautiful no matter how hard you try.
