The Peoples Democratic Party has advised Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, to sell the helicopter purchased for security surveillance and stop “wasteful spending” in order to raise money to pay salaries of workers in the state. The Director of Media and Strategy of the PDP in Osun State, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, gave this advice in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osoogbo on Sunday. The statement read, “The PDP is urging the government to sell the helicopter Governor Aregbesola said was procured for the state and he should stop frivolous trips to Cuba. “What this administration told us was that the helicopter was to be used for surveillance, but we have since discovered that the machine is only serving the traveling needs of Mr. Aregbesola and his family. This remains one draining pipe that must be blocked. “The governor and his aides should also forthwith stop traveling in chartered aircraft around the world. If President Muhammadu Buhari could be traveling on British Airways, even when aircrafts in Presidential fleet are available, there is need for Governor Aregbesola to borrow a leaf.” The opposition party also accused the governor of wasting the the state’s resources on politics and arming of a group of youth he called “State Boys.” The PDP called on the new members of the Osun State House of Assembly not to turn themselves to rubber stamp of the executive arm of the government. According to the party, the people of the state now place their hope on the lawmakers to check the ‘excesses of the governor’ in the interest of the masses. The statement read further, “It is also fresh in our minds, the huge amount Ogbeni Aregbesola expended on the last Ekiti governorship poll, Lagos governorship poll, and the Presidential project of the All Progressive Congress, APC. “Also, a group of miscreants called ‘State Boys’ are being illegal armed and financed by government to unleash terror on many indigenes of the state by the ruling party. “All these actions and many other wasteful spending led us to where we are now, which if they could be reversed, could bring financial reserves for the state. “But if Ogbeni Aregbesola will not treat this advise with disdain, and henceforth, begin to act as governor of all, we believe at least, he will be able to pay few months of the backlog of salaries owed workers and retirees.” However, the governor described the suggestions and allegations from the opposition party as infantile. Speaking through a statement issued by his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, Aregbesola said the PDP was just seeking cheap publicity with their suggestions and spurious allegations. The statement read, “It is disheartening this is how degenerate PDP has become in their thinking process. They screamed ignorantly about two years ago that Osun procured a helicopter with a sum of N8 billion. We had asked them to find out the cost of a Boeing plane let alone a helicopter which was only leased and it was to beef up the Osun Swift Action Squad for its aerial surveilance. This was clear to all in the state that the helicopter was procured as part of the Rauf Aregbesola administration’s comprehensive security measures to drive criminals far away from the state. “For the PDP in its narrow thinking to tell us to sell the helicopter is a sign of intellectual laziness. The allegations that Aregbesola uses the helicopter for his personal use lack any evidence. “It is obvious the PDP, after it has reached its final bus stop of defeat rigmarole, as typified by the Supreme Court decision of May 27, is merely looking for something to keep it relevant. “The people of Osun need adequate security which PDP failed to provide throughout Nigeria in its 16 years of misrule. The People of Osun require good governance which the PDP could not give them. I therefore advise that shameful lies such as those Odeyemi cooked up again and threw to the media would not help the party. They would help sink it deeper.” Source:www.punchng.com/news/sell-helicopter-to-pay-workers-pdp-tells-aregbesola/ |

Following the clash between the police and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign States of Biafra a few days ago, the Imo State Police Command has arrested of 68 members of MASSOB involved with the showdown with the police. Briefing newsmen in Owerri, the state capital on Monday, the state Commissioner of Police, Austin Evbakavbokun confirmed that 68 members of the Igbo pressure group, were arrested, 62 he said have already been charged to court for alleged conspiracy, breach of peace of the state and unlawfully belonging to society. The CP noted that the suspects were arrested for storming the state with insignias, which were not of Nigeria and above all, conducting themselves in a disorderly manner without a permit from the state police. He also added that the members were chanting war songs, barricaded the roads, thereby obstructing free flow of traffic before his men moved in to disperse them. Evbakavbokun, who frowned on the continual struggle of the MASSOB members, noted that those who had persisted in the struggle never knew how the Biafra war was fought and won, adding that no nation would want to go through that experience again. “Those who came out that day, I am sure, never knew how the Biafra war was fought and won. We have one nation. How can two flags be in one nation? What they are doing is subversive and the security can not close their eyes; we have to guard our nation. Gone are the days when this kind of things happens,” Evbakavbokun said. Items recovered from the arrested members, as listed by the CP, included Biafra uniforms, Biafra ID cards, Biafra flags and some buses. The Deputy Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, Cardinal James Odunmbaku, says the new Governor of the state, Akinwunmi Ambode, will surpass his predecessor in terms of achievement. Odunmbaku, who spoke in Lagos on Sunday, added that the APC was a progressive party, which was given to exceptional performance. He said, “The outstanding performance of the APC’s elected officers across the country encouraged Nigerians to vote for change at the federal level and retain the party in Lagos State. Ambode will do more to justify the confidence reposed in him by Lagosians.” Odunmbaku, who was the Chairman of the APC/Ambode Campaign Committee, also urged the new governor to deliver dividends of democracy to residents of the state. He said although the administration of the immediate past Governor of the state, Babatunde Fashola, recorded landslide achievements, Ambode must do more. He lauded Fashola for giving an excellent account of himself while in office, wishing him well in his future endeavours. He added that Ambode’s administration would start from where Fashola’s government stopped. Odunmbaku said, “During the swearing-in of the governor, Ambode promised to key into the 2012 – 2025 Development Programme put in place by the Fashola’s administration. “That is the essence of continuity and that is why I believe Ambode will surpass Fashola’s achievements. “He was part of Fashola’s government and he was one of those who drew out the development plan. So, he is not a stranger in the government of Lagos State.” Source:www.punchng.com/news/ambodell-surpass-fasholas-achievements/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter |
