you all have not taken to my warning about not going by the THEORY, i mean the diagram that i referred to as theory. I STATED that we should stick to the ACTUAL, the diagram referred to as actual. compare the two diagrams and you will see the reason you not arriving at my answer.
Even when i made a mistake of saying 'stick with the theory' which i latter corrected almost immediately , that we should go by 'actual'.
the values you have arrived at are from THEORY.
THE DIFFERENCE;
SIMPLY DEDUCT THE VALUE OF SCALAR RING FROM YOUR RADIUS BEFORE SQUARING IN YOUR PYTHAGORAS FORMULA.
LETS GO!

I am trying to figure everything out myself now. Anyway am not convinced of the above figure for the tripod. If it is pythagoras you used and did not approximate any value leading to your answer then i think the value for the tripod is wrong. Can you prove me wrong. My calculations which i have rechecked says it should be 175.0863 which i have now approximated to 175.1cm.

Can u prove otherwise.

My parameters were

Focal length : 123.1 cm
Radius : 160 cm

Now remember his depth was 52 cm so take that out of the 123.1 : (123.1 - 52) cm = 71.1 cm

Now using pythagoras: (71.1) squared + (160) squared = (the length of the tripod) squared

Now the length of the tripod = square root of {(71.1) squared + (160) squared}

= 175.0863 cm
approximately = 175.1 cm

I dont think i missed it but none of you talked of the length of the tripod. Is it that one has to use the pythagoras theorem to calculate this since one has the radius, depth and focal point? You see my fear is pythagoras always is a right angled triangle but this is not due to the lnb holder which is circular and therefore prevents it from being a complete triangle.

Hope my point is clear. I await your guidance.

good work and good illustrations. I enjoyed recollecting my elementary math. Now concerning the depth of the dish, how can you measure in order to avoid errors. In other words one would have to measure from the center (in the middle) of the base of the dish to edge of the dish.

Am thinking of using a thing thread from one end of the tip of the dish to the other (as if measuring the diameter) and then putting a stick in the base of the dish up to the thread. Is this how to go about it. If yes how can one ensure that the stick is in the exact middle of the dish. What else can one do to eliminate or minimize errors as much as possible.

First of all thanks for keeping the thread alive. Dont worry about the pix then. Please take your time to organize them properly. You see my problem might be fundamental. (i dont know if any GH member has the same opinion). First of all i cant seem to find the materials in GH. (any GH member who knows where to get these materials should please come to my aid.) Am alight with the calculations so far. Now my greatest worry is producing that mould. For me Nilesat is my target now so am looking at 3m or 2.4m at least.

Imagine seeking an answer from google or any of the available search engine, and it bounce back on you with all sort of abuses, imagine that! i guess the internet will be crazy to work with, funny right? All the same its been fun when i read through various nigerian forum and read where people ask questions that most people think they are not surpose to and others answer that same question the way that makes that becomes the topic for the day. Also, the words of wisdom says ' lean not to your own understanding' in other words, the above picture to the poster might simply be a way to amuse the forum and not the other way round; and he even started by comending the house for a job well done before asking anything. Our people say that when you commend a hero for all that he has done, then he will have the strength to do more. Lets face it, all of us come here for three reasons; (1) give infomations (2) get informations (3) see how well you information has helped others or how they respond to it. So imagine how bad you will feel if your sole aim for being in the forum at a particular moment in time is to give out infomation to any that needs it and no one actually requires it. Take a pulse and think about this for a MOMENT before yopu react and maybe you might have a reason to render your selfless service to you fellow blackmen withot prejudice. Finally to those who choose to ask questions that there is every possibility have been treated before, JUST SCROW DOWN TO THE PAGE AND YOU WILL SEE A GOOGLE SEARCH TAB DEDICATED TO EVERY ISSUES THAT HAS BEEN DISCUSSED ON NAIRALAND. TYPE IN YOUR QUERY AND YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY TO DISCOVERING THAT WHICH YOU SEEK. IT SAVES TIME, MONEY AND ABUSES. IT WILL ALSO AMAZED HOW MANY MORE FINDINGS YOU ARE LIKELY TO GET. Am still at war trying to find out the cause of this blatant attack on Gadotor. Honestly, the guy is currently the only member willing to answer either any ''sensible'' or ''silly'' question from ANY Tom, Dick and Harry. Someone even commented about the fact that he always added a THANK YOU to his posts. This is the only reason i think everyone is turning their questions to him because for sure THEY will be answered.
