Culture / Re: Money Wife In Becheve, Cross River: A Story By Tunde Onakoya by doncheks: 9:27pm On Oct 23, 2022
I am moved by this act of kindness and enraged that this wicked and barbaric act still persists in modern civilization.

I still maintain that the girl child is like an endangered specie in some of the poorest places in the world.

I admire the objectivity with which you outlined plans to end this menace. I can only imagine the amount of thought and deep thinking hours invested in this initiative.

Thank you for choosing to be heroes at a time when such acts of goodwill are hard to come by.

I wish I could be more actively involved but I'd make my personal donation and hope that more initiatives like this will be inspired by this act and help us to give a better life to those whose life opportunities have been robbed by archaic and barbaric cultural practices devised by depraved narcissistic misogynists.

Thank you @chessinslums and I pray and hope that this story has a happy ending for the Becheve girls.

Business / Re: Abokifx Suspends Exchange Rate Updates After CBN Blocks Accounts by doncheks: 7:13pm On Sep 18, 2021
FreeIgboho:

Nonsense. Answer is, there is no way they can enforce it. All AbokiFx needs do is pull completely out of Nigeria and quietly keep publishing their rates

No need for insults. Regarding your question on where TD Bank gets its rates. This phrase from Aboki Fx Official Statement might explain,

"To most of the users of our platforms, we are just a parallel rates board BUT to many institutions ranging from Ivy League Universities, to global business and Research Centres, we are a key source of data, especially historical data"

Yes, anyone is free to create a website and publish exchange rates but not everyone can become an authority on exchange rate data. We are talking about two different things here.

The owner of AbokiFX can decide to go rogue and keep publishing but that does not stop the government from laying charges and initiating a website takedown via ISP's, search engines and domain providers.

If AbokiFX wants to publish naira exchange rates, it must do so in accordance with Section 2 sub-section 16 of the CBN Act. Unfortunately , it is not possible to get black market rates at this time because CBN has suspended all BDC Licensees which were the primary providers of this Data.

It is deemed an offense to publish street rates which is what AbokiFX is doing.

RodgersAkpafu:

If there was extra USD liquidity in the system
Will the black market rates hold?
The answer is NO
It is the laws of economics slapping sense into the coconut bald headed CBN governor.
He cut out crypto traders
The rates worsened
He cut out BDC
The rates worsened even more
Froze the account of these fintech companies
The rates fell again

Cant we see the pattern here ?
It's the CBN digging it's own grave

Here is what I think CBN needs to do

1. Increase ATM and card transaction limit to $1000 or more. This should take care of 25-30% of individual Fx Demands.
2. Mandate all banks to publish exchange rate information on their website. This should include the BTA rate, Card Rate, Form M, etc. This removes dependence on unofficial websites like Abokifx and eliminates manipulations of the currency.
3. Create complaints and reporting systems and set strict punishment for banks that violate exchange rate policies, most notably tier 2 banks/microbanks
4. Increase/ Remove the Limits currently placed on Dorm Accounts.
5. Review its Policy on Money Transfer Operators.
6. Eliminate unofficial channels of obtaining FX. This should minimize Political Manipulations
7. Remove all rebates associated with obtaining FX for pilgrimage and other purposes
8. Set a maximum timeline of processing all FX requests like Form A, Form Q, and Form M to a maximum of 2 weeks.
9. Audit Bank FX transactions on a Bi-monthly basis
10. Maintain the suspension of BDC Licenses. They are part of the problem since they are difficult to regulate.
11. Set some scapegoats with any of the erring financial institutions so others can fall in line.

FreeIgboho:

And how would they enforce it on someone who has nothing to do with Nigeria (like TD bank whicj also reports Naija black market rates)?

I don't know where TD Bank gets its rates from but I know that all other exchange rate information providers depend on AbokiFX. The CBN does not need to pursue all offenders. it only needs the strategic ones to get the desired effect.
Business / Re: Abokifx Suspends Exchange Rate Updates After CBN Blocks Accounts by doncheks: 5:04pm On Sep 18, 2021
Raymondfayowole:

We don't have to be myopic in this situation. First is he manipulating the rates? I can't say for sure but he claimed he gets his rates from the streets.

Why would he need a legal authorisation before they can display parallel or black markets rates. I guess that's why it's called unofficial rates.

Speculation is part of the market. Tackle the problem from the root. AbokiFX is not the main problem of the country and we cannot say they're innocent .

The CBN can decide to prosecute Aboki Fx based on the CBN Act section 2 subsection 16.

"16. The exchange rate of the Naira shall be determined, from time to time, by a
suitable mechanism devised by the Bank for that purpose."

Like I earlier mentioned, this is an oversight on CBN's part considering Aboki Fx's level of acceptance by the Nigerian public.

Even the CBN Act is very vague and does not have a section on reportage which is what AbokiFx claims it does.
If there was a clause on reportage, I am sure it would have included a supervisory function to prevent manipulation.

When you also look at currency as a commodity, this can be likened to price-fixing which is illegal in any economy.

A currency's value is based on the perception of its users. And perception is subject to manipulation.

All in All, I blame the CBN for the mess the Naira is in. How many banks have been sanctioned in the last 7 years for malpractices? I really miss the Sanusi days and that's the kind of CBN Governor Nigeria needs at this time.

In fact, I don't think Aboki Fx should be liable. Nigeria's FX industry has too many loopholes

Take, for instance, the connected Nigerian Politician who gets millions of dollars on a regular basis at CBN rates and then sells same at the black market without importing any item thereby depriving legitimate businesses of the much needed Fx

Are you aware that some banks segment their customers for FX purposes? Set A is given a much higher exchange rate while Set B is given something closer to what CBN Expects.

The current black market rate of 570 is unacceptably high and if the CBN makes the right moves, we can see a drop of up to 100 Naira in a space of just a few days

By holding that snake very close to it's mouth, you are taking a huge risk. I hope you didn't get bitten.
Snakes can still bite even when they are dead. Just like a decapitated chicken can still get to run for a few minutes.
This is because the nervous system is pre-programmed to take certain actions without needing to consult the brain.

Some memorable cases include the case of a cook that was bitten by a dead snake he was preparing.

Literature / Re: Who Is Your Favorite Author Of All Time? by doncheks: 7:42pm On Jun 28, 2020
1. James Hadley Chase - I must have read at least 20 of his books. One of the books gave me a headache and nightmares smiley
2. Irving Wallace - I read the Plot. That's the longest novel I ever read. It was somewhere around 1000 pages. I'm still amazed at how the author masterfully connected 4 completely unrelated chapters. Beautifully crafted with an adult theme.
3. Erle Stanley Gardner - I believe I read more than 30 of the Perry Mason series. I almost chose a career in Law as a result.
4. Kole Omotosho - I just ordered another copy of A new dawn, a few weeks ago. I admire his style of narrating history via prose
5. Frederick Forsyth
6. Elechi Amadi
7. Agatha Christie - I'm pretty sure I read more than 30 Poirot Series.

The only problem I see here is inadequate/no waterproofing.
Your decking needs to be waterproofed. Try to avoid felt and use something more permanent.
You can check out water proofing paint that uses fiber glass mesh.
Politics / Re: Abiola's Family Urges FG To Recognize Him As Ex-President by doncheks: 7:23am On Jun 13, 2020
tomju:

Has justice been served? How do you compensate a man who won the presidency but denied due to evil machination of enemies of Nigeria? If you were the one in question, would you feel that you have justice? Think, then you can answer. Its easier to take a position on peoples' matters, but if the tables were turned and we are directly affected, we may not decide in that manner.

Let me ask you. Who are the Beneficiaries of this compensation, his family right?

Now you see, a call to public service is a call to serve. Public servants were know to live modest lives after service.
But in our time, it has become an opportunity to enrich oneself and amass stupendous wealth.
If Abiola won the election and was not declared Winner, the real losers are the masses who were robbed of their vote and not his family. The same thing is going on today in the form of rigged elections.
Who will compensate all the victims of rigged elections
Who will compensate all those who innocently lost their lives in senseless boko haram killings because the state was unable to provide security.
Who will compensate the millions of youths who are jobless today because the money that was allocated for economic growth was stolen by those that hijacked their votes.
Who will compensate the unborn children that will suffer hardship because of the greediness of their ancestors.

The best thing our leaders can do to compensate us is to right the wrongs:

Govern us well.
Give us the opportunity to pick our leaders.

Nigeria will be great again.

Making him GCFR, posthumously and June 12 democracy day is the highest honor he can receive.
Asking him to be declared ex President is an unthinkable, selfish and unreasonable attempt to rewrite history.

It's mind boggling that as wealthy as MKO was in his lifetime, "his family members have been suffering,” after his death.

If this were even remotely possible, then we can as well begin to consider declaring the likes of Awo who contributed more, ex-presidents. An act they will likely resent if they had a say, considering the rot in the nation.
But then, to what end.

Buhari has done it again...

Subsidies are gone for good, any marketer that doesn't want to accept the new reality can start selling palm oil.

For the first time since 1993, we are going to completely get rid of the fraudulent subsidy regime and use the money to development our critical infrastructure!!!

I AM DONE TALKING

Buhari did not remove subsidy. Covid did.
It would have been impossible for any government to pay subsidy under the given circumstances.
What we want is a free market regime in the oil sector.

Nigerian track and field athlete Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor mistakenly lets her wig fall off during a long jump.

This happened during Oslo Diamond League on Thursday evening. She made sure she was behind the board, landed nicely and then... her wig fell off.

Not one to show what must have been considerable embarrassment at the unfortunate incident, the Nigerian simply waited for her mark to be measured (6.21m) before picking up the hairpiece and proceeding to slip it back into place.

Lol.Actually, the wig is part of her body and will be used to determine her score. So removing it before the reading has been taken will disqualify her attempt.
