Faced with a rising death toll of its members  in the wake of the ongoing anti-terrorism expedition by the military, the outlawed Boko Haram sect has resorted to forcing people to join its fold, it was learnt Wednesday.

The military said yesterday that the sect had taken that path of conscripting young people into its fold following the deadly attacks by troops in the last few days at the Sambisa forest and other camps where members of the sects lost hundreds of fighters.

Spokesman of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army, Col Muhammadu Dole,  told journalists in Maiduguri   that the terrorists were now moving around villages and other highways to abduct and forcibly recruit innocent people to replace those killed by troops.

The insurgents, also for the second time in 72 hours, yesterday attacked travellers on  the Maiduguri-Biu highway, and killed  nine of them.

The Borno highways have become the slaughter slab of the notorious sect in recent times as scores of passengers have been waylaid and killed.

Last Monday, some travellers were attacked on the same road while three drivers were abducted by the insurgents, after burning their two   vehicles loaded with oranges.

The most notorious of the highways is the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu Road, which records daily attack on motorists by the militia group
It was gathered yesterday that many motorists had to make an urgent  U-turn when the sect seized control of the now notorious Maiduguri- Damboa- Biu Road.

Some of those compelled to make a forced retreat, told journalists in Maiduguri that the bodies of  nine passengers were seen on the highway with their throats slashed.

According to them, the insurgents attacked a passenger bus and a car close to Bulabulin Ngaura village in Damboa Local Government Area.

It was also gathered that some supporters of the All Progressives Congress  (APC) who were on their way back to Biu after a  political engagement in Maiduguri, were forced to return to turn back following the attack.

One of them said: "The road today (yesterday) is not good; we have to turn back because we saw and counted nine dead bodies and there was nobody around there.  So, we were afraid to continue our journey to Biu and so we had to quickly  make a U-turn"

A crack team of detectives attached to Edo State Police Command is  investigating the murder of one Victor Nsongbunyo, a Deputy Manager attached to Nigeria Petroleum Development  Company NPDC, Benin City, who was allegedly murdered by his wife and her pastor boy friend, penultimate Friday.
The deceased, whom Vanguard learnt is from Cross River State, was recently promoted to Deputy Manager in the company and was due to retire from service next year before he met his death.
It was learnt that the deceased and his wife had been having issues with the paternity of their children after the deceased suspected the wife was having an extra-marital affair with the pastor.
The deceased was said to have visited home to complain to both his family and that of his wife, after suspecting that the current pregnancy the wife is carrying was not from him.
Consequently, the families resolved that a DNA test be conducted after giving birth to the child.
Vanguard learnt that it was this arrangement that infuriated the wife and which led her into allegedly plotting the murder her husband with her lover pastor.
On Friday October 22, 2013, the deceased came home after work when the suspected killers came. After allegedly committing the dastardly act, they took the mutilated body into one of his old cars and drove to Sapele Road.
The car, with the body of the NPDC Manager in it, was set ablaze.
On Monday October 25, the wife was said to have gone to the deceased’s office to report that her husband was missing.
But apparently after visiting the husband’s office, she went straight to the bank and withdrew N4 milion from his account.
The woman also went to the police to report the incident.
However, staff of NDDC were informed that people observed a burnt car somewhere along Sapele Road. They rushed to the scene and found it was the late Nsongbunyo’s car.
They went back to the deceased’s wife to inform her of the situation but found her sitting comfortably at home watching television.
That was when the police started suspecting her.
However, detectives intensified search for the deceased car which was given to him by the company, following his promotion.
The car was tracked to a compound at Ekenwan road, Benin City.
Vanguard learnt that a lady was accosted by detectives in the compound and she confessed that the car was packed by a pastor that lived in the compound.
When the pastor came out, detectives observed burns in his left hand and face. The pastor disclosed that one of his daughters in the church sowed a seed with the car. The duo were arrested immediately and are currently being investigated by detectives at the Police Command in Edo State.

Apparently, they're OK with living out the rest of their lives on Mars. The technology for a return flight doesn't exist -- there's no Kennedy Space Center launch pad over there! -- and having a one-way trip greatly reduces costs, the company has said.

The application period is now closed, and by the end of this year, the company plans to notify those special folk who made it to Round 2.

The unmanned mission is the "most important and most difficult step of actually getting humans to Mars," Lansdorp said.


It would also be the first privately funded planetary exploration mission.

"The opportunity to participate in that is just really exciting," said Ed Sedivy, a chief engineer at Lockheed Martin Space Systems.

Lansdorp expects that the majority of funding for the unmanned missions will come from sponsors and partners, not public contributions.

Actor Paul Walker, who shot to fame as star of the high-octane street racing franchise "Fast & Furious," died Saturday in a car crash in Southern California. He was 40.

Walker was a passenger in a friend's 2005 Porsche Carrera GT and both were attending a charity event for his organization, Reach Out Worldwide, in the community of Valencia in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles north of Hollywood.

The website for the charity said the Saturday event was intended to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Speed was a factor in the crash, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said.

The wreck took place about 3:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. ET), about 300 yards from the office park where the event was held. The speed limit there is 45 mph.

Deputies arrived at the scene to find a vehicle on fire, the sheriff's department said in a statement.

Once fire crews put the flames out, they found two occupants, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.

Saturday evening, all that remained was the burnt mangled metal of the red car and a light pole that had been knocked down.

Makurdi High Court has sentenced one Jacob Atongo, a 100-level sociology student of Benue State University (BSU) to death by hanging for armed robbery. Atongo was said to have conspired with two others to rob one Stephen Akuma, and several others at gun point on June 26, 2012.

The accused and his accomplices robbed Akuma of his Toyota Camry car with registration number Benue AID 39 AA and other victims of valuables, including various sums of money.

The convict was said to have also attacked judges’ quarters in Makurdi on July 3, 2012 and robbed no fewer than 15 people, dispossessing them of various items and money at gun point.

Delivering judgment on Tuesday, Justice Adam Onum, held that he was satisfied with the confession of the accused to the charges and therefore, found him guilty.

Onum sentenced the accused to death by hanging, saying the sentence prescribed under the law for the offence must be followed. He said the offences contravened the Robbery and Firearms Laws.

During the proceedings, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and testified for himself along with one witness called by his counsel.

Prosecution held that the convict confessed to the commission of the offences but counsel to the accused, Mr E. Z. Agbakor, argued that the prosecution failed to prove the case against his client beyond reasonable doubt.

Agbakor told the court that the accused did not make the statement tendered in court voluntarily, insisting his client was tortured and forced to confess to the offences.

linearity: The law is centered around giving priority to human life above property and treasures.

If you bring a weapon to robbery, the penalty increases drastically because a human life was threaten and in danger even if the property or treasures robbed is insignificant but the value is large enough for you to be charged as a Robber and not petty thief.

On the other hand, if you snatched a million naira from someone without using any weapon, your sentence will be lower because no human life was in danger during the incident.
