ILORIN — Tragedy struck, yesterday, at Oloje area of Ilorin when a housewife simply identified as Mariam allegedly struck her bricklayer husband to death with a stick following altercations  between them over N100.
Vanguard reliably gathered that the woman, a mother of four all late, had recently returned into her matrimonial home after she parted ways with her  husband following irreconcilable differences.
The incident which occurred yesterday, had since thrown the community into mourning as sympathisers thronged the deceased’s compound.
An eye-witness told Vanguard that  their relationship went sour again yesterday morning, leading to a hot argument between them  over N100 which the woman was said to have demanded from the husband.
The deceased,the source added, was said to have told the wife that he had no money which did not go down well with the wife thereby degenerating into a hot argument between them.
During the process, the wife was said to have picked a stick and hit the husband on his head and he fainted.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital where he was pronounced dead.
As the news of the man’s death filtered in,the woman on realising the gravity of the incident was said to have locked herself up in a room and inflicted wounds on her body using a razor blade.
To avert another tragedy, residents of the area, according to sources, forced the door open and dragged the culprit out naked before the police were invited to effect her arrest.

— Lots of lawmakers have been accused of devilish behavior, but Oklahoma’s state capitol may become the first to actually have a monument to Satan.

If a New York-based group called the Temple of Satan gets its way, a statue of the Evil One would sit next to the recently erected 10 Commandments monument on state capitol grounds.

“They said they wanted to be open to different monuments,” said Lucien Greaves, a spokesman for the Temple of Satan, “and this seems like a perfect place to put that to the test.”

Greaves and some legal experts say the Constitution is clear: the government can’t endorse one particular religion. So, if a state capitol has a monument to one faith, it must allow monuments to others as well.

The Temple of Satan is less a religious body organized around rituals and regular meetings than a roving band of political provocateurs, said Greaves. They believe Satan is a “literary construct,” the spokesman said, not an actual being with horns and hooves.

Last year, the Temple organized a gay and lesbian kiss-in at the gravesite of the mother of anti-gay preacher and activist the Rev. Fred Phelps. It also held a rally at Florida’s state capitol in support of a law that allows “inspirational messages” at public school assemblies.

“It allows us to spread the message of Satanism,” which centers around respect for diversity and religious minorities, said Greaves.

Oklahoma legislators voted to erect the Ten Commandments monument in 2009, using private funds donated by Rep. Mike Rietz, a surgeon and Southern Baptist deacon.

Rietz declined to comment on the Satanists’ proposal on Monday, citing an separate and ongoing dispute with the American Civil Liberties Union over the Ten Commandments monument.

Oklahoma state Rep. Bob Cleveland told CNN that he’s not in favor of the Satanist’s proposed statue.

“I believe that only monuments that reflect Oklahoma values should be allowed on capitol the capitol grounds,” Cleveland said in an e-mail on Monday.

But if Christians and Jews can have their monument to the 10 Commandments, then Satanists must be allowed to erect their own statue, said Brady Henderson, legal director of the American Civil Liberty Union’s Oklahoma chapter.

“We feel like the Satanic Temple has a very strong argument to say that, if the state allows one religious monument, you have to allow others,” Henderson said.

Oklahoma’s statehouse grounds already has monuments honoring its heritage and Native American history, said Trait Thompson, chair of the Capitol Preservation Commission.

“Individuals and groups are free to apply to place a monument or statue or artwork,” Thompson said.

The commission then determines whether the proposal abides by its standards and votes on whether to approve it.

Greaves said he’s received the required forms from Oklahoma’s Capitol Preservation Commission and is working on a design that will meet its standards.

“We want something big and bold that will be able to stand up to the weather or whatever other kinds of assaults,” that may target the monument, he said.

“My favorite idea right now is an object of play for children. We want kids to see that Satanism is where the fun is.”

The Temple of Satan created a Indiegogo fundraising page on Monday, but have thus far only publicly raised $150 towards its goal of $20,000.

Not all Satanist groups see the fun in political provocations.

Magus Peter Gilmore, head of the Church of Satan, which was founded by Anton LaVey in 1966, said he believes in strict separation of church and state.

“Rather than placing multiple ‘advertisements’ for various religions, we think it best for the (10 Commandments) monument to be removed to private property and that there be no objects supporting religion of any sort placed on the statehouse grounds,” Gilmore said.

Earlier this year, Gilmore’s Church of Satan squared off against a British group of Satanists over abortion rights, after activists shouted “Hail Satan” to drown out anti-abortion activists at the Texas state capitol.

A 71-year- old night guard and hunter, Alhaji Ganiyu Kolawole was last week caught red handed in Akure raping a 7-year-old girl, Taye Juliana in broad day light having lured her with a biscuit into his ramshackle room.
According to Vanguard, the suspect who is in State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC custody, had within the space of two years after returning from jail for rape, raped no fewer than five children in the area.
Parents of his victims, mostly illiterates, reportedly kept it to themselves without reporting to security operatives not wanting to send him back to jail.
Taye, a primary one pupil of St. Paul Annex Primary School, Oba-Ile, in Akure was defiled at the residence of the suspect at Mission Road, Ayetoro Street, Oba-Ile.
It was gathered that the suspect who lives alone has turned his dilapidated house where he committed the ungodly act into a destroying hut for small girls.
A native of Benue state, the suspect threatened to deal with parents of his victims if they mention his sinful exploits to the police. He was even said to have settled them with bush meat.
Many of his neighbours described him as a terror in the area stating that they fear him.
It was gathered that the unsuspecting girl who left home that ill-fated day without breakfast, was told by the mother to come during break for her food. Reports said when she was returning home, the suspect lured her into his house with a promise to give her biscuit and cold water.
Giving a graphic account of how the incident took place, the image maker of the NSCDC, Kayode Balogun stated that the suspect acted the script with another accomplice, now at large, by asking the girl what she wanted and promised to give her not only cold water but biscuits. Balogun said that while the girl was still trying to think about what the Alhaji had promised her, the other accomplice reportedly pushed her inside the house while the Alhaji carried her and covered her mouth when she started shouting.
It was learnt that after the Alhaji was through with defiling the girl, he cleaned her up with a cloth as she was bleeding.
When Alhaji was interrogated, he said the girl approached him to buy her biscuit as she was hungry and he did. He denied raping her.
However, investigation revealed that the suspect is a serial rapist who had been jailed before for raping another girl in the community.
“When officers of the corps went to the house of the accused (Oba-Ile) for investigation, residents of the area testified that the man was fond of raping children, and had been jailed before for raping a particular girl in that area. So, after the matter was reported to the agency, the girl was taken to General Hospital where it was confirmed she had been raped.”
It was further gathered that the girl whose father died few years ago lives with her mother in a one-room apartment in Oba-ile area of the state.
Narrating her own side of the ugly incident, mother of Taye, Mrs. Mary Mike who is into laundry business said, “That day, I had no money to feed my four children.
“I told them to come back to the house during their break period when I would have made some Eba for them. I was sitting in front of the house waiting for my children to come back when one of my neighbours from the market said she saw my daughter coming out from the house of the man.
“By the time I got to the man’s house, I did not find my girl. I then rushed to her school where I met her and her teacher who was asking her question. My daughter was crying and was pointing at her private part and by the time we checked her private part, she was bleeding. I asked her what happened and she said a man carried her inside his house and slept on top of her.
“I started crying and people said I should report it to the Civil Defense who would not compromise. It was the officers of the Civil Defense that followed me to his house where he was arrested.”
Mrs. Mike said that her husband who is a friend to the suspect died two years ago, adding that he was also a hunter and used to hunt with the suspect when he was alive.
She further said she decided to report the matter because the suspect has been committing the crime and those concerned have out of fear, failed to inform security operatives noting that this will not only check the hunter’s excesses but make him stop committing the heinous crime against little girls in the area.

Students of Edu Secondary School in Ikot Edeghe, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have decried their continuous suffering which they have termed “cursed educational system in the state”.

The students who came out of their terminal exams soaked and drained complained bitterly of poor academic environment and total neglect of their school, characterised by perforated roofs and poor management for more than a decade.

One SS2 student who is currently writing his terminal exams and gave her name as Ima, said the situation has been their fate since she joined the school five years ago. She said, most of the students failed the last West African School Certificate (WAEC) exams woefully as a result of the perennial leakage of the school’s roofs during exams, as they battled with the rains during classes and exams.

“This is how the past students sat and wrote their WAEC examinations, as most of them got F9 and mere pass grade. Very few of them managed to secure credit passes in few subjects. I and a few friends of mine have vowed not to take our final exams in this school since there is no effort towards any change.

” We have already told our parents this; and they’re making arrangement for us to move to another school. I know it is going to be expensive, but we are not going to bother about it since our parents have accepted it.’’ Ima cried out.

Our correspondent met with an ex-student of the school , Master Imo Udo, who was in the school to collect his WAEC and NECO results. He initially refused to speak to us, but later granted us audience. Master Udoh said he had earlier predicted the poor outcome of the results because the Science Laboratory had been abandoned due to lack of facilities and the continuous leakage of the lab roof. He called on the government to urgently intervene. He expressed surprise that, no noticeable improvement had been made since he left the school last year, even with the Deputy Governor, Lady Valerie Ebe who is from the very village.

“I pray that government of Akwa Ibom State would comes and renovate this school. Why are we shouting ‘free and compulsory education’ when schools are in deplorable condition in our state?


” What baffles me most is that, the new Deputy Governor, Mrs. Valerie Ebe is from this very village. I wonder if she is not aware of the rot in this school”

Effort by our correspondent to speak with the Principal, Mr. Joseph Ukpe did not yield any dividends as he was said to have travelled to Uyo for the All Nigerian Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS).

A little drama, however, ensued when our reporter decided to take pictures of the schools and students who were writing exams in the waterlogged classes. They were confronted and sternly warned by an unknown staff not to do so. The threat was that our reporter’s camera would be confiscated. Fresh graduates of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, are gearing up for a show down with the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

The induction of the graduates was to take place today, Friday, morning but the Dean, Prof. B.C Ezeanolue shut the door against 120 of the 136 graduates.

The Dean has already inducted less than 20 graduates, including his two daughters.

The fresh medical graduates are threatening action against the authorities.

According to a report by Eagle Online, a lawyer and another man were found dead in a Toyota Camry car with registration number FGG 931 AE, at the popular Inter-Bau round-about in Asaba Delta State yesterday Thursday December 12th.

The lawyer and the passenger were said to be returning from a court session when they suddenly started foaming in the mouth and nose in the air-conditioned car. They were dead within minutes according to eye witnesses.

Explaining the mystery behind the deaths, a source said he believes the men were poisoned.
