Indications have emerged why the talks between the Nigerian government and the leaders of organised labour hit the rocks Monday night. The federal government had announced the deregulation of the petroleum downstream, a development that has jerked up the price of Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise known as fuel from N86 to N145 per litre. Following the development, labour leaders threatened to embark on nationwide strike if the price was not reversed within 96 hours. In a bid to stop the strike action, the government called for a dialogue with the workforce Monday. A competent insider hinted DAILY POST that the federal government during the meeting with the Ayuba Wabba-led NLC proposed N120 per litre but labour rejected, describing it as outrageous. According to him, the presidency said the best they could do was to reduce the pump price by N25, in consideration of the outcries by Nigerians. “That was why the meeting ended in deadlock. FG proposed N120 per litre but the NLC insisted of total reversal to the old price, which is N86 per litre. “They were not ready to accept the outrageous proposal. “The outcome of the meeting with the Joe Ajaero-led group would determine the next line of action,” the source who would not want his name mentioned said. However, efforts to reach the NLC General Secretary, Peter Ozo-Esun for confirmation could not yield any fruit at the time of this report. http://dailypost.ng/2016/05/17/labour-leaders-kick-as-fg-proposes-n120-per-litre/

Former Abia State governor, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, has said that the issue of Biafra is a very big one in Nigeria today, adding that he is waiting for President Mohammadu Buhari’s “mind to calm down” for him to personally appeal for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. While expressing optimism that the president will give him all the needed attention on Kanu’s release, he added that the younger generation has the right to ask for Biafra, only that it should go through the right process. The former governor was speaking in an interview with Daily Sun on Sunday, where he pointed out that people have committed more serious offences than that of Kanu. He said, “People have committed more offences than what Nnamdi did but they were pardoned; so, I’m still going to appeal to the president, we will have a common ground very soon. “Let’s see what will happen between now and the end of the year. “This issue should not be rushed, the president should not be pressurised; we are talking to him informally. Kalu disclosed that Buhari is being communicated to through various national and international communities in order to secure Kanu’s release. He added, “We are talking to the president through the international community, we are talking to him through African presidents and we are talking to him through personal friends. “He is going to listen, Buhari is not as hard as people think and he has a heart that flows with milk. He said measures are ongoing for him to visit Kanu in prison soon so as to speak with him. He said, “I will see Nnamdi Kanu in prison very soon and I will like to talk to him and I know he will listen to me. “Nobody is saying anybody cannot talk about Biafra, you can talk about any other republic but you should not take Nigeria for granted; it’s a sovereign nation and we’ve all sworn to keep the country together. Kalu, while pleading with Nigerians to work towards a bigger Nigeria and a stronger economy, said, “If I should have my way, we should be talking of a bigger Nigeria. “The economic benefit of being together is very strong. He, however, lamented that the past Federal Governments have abandoned the South-East, noting that roads and other infrastructures in the region are decaying. He said, “Since after the war, the Federal Government has not made any investment in the entire South-East. “But I believe the government under Buhari will do something to address this marginalisation.” http://dailypost.ng/2016/05/16/buhari-has-a-heart-flowing-with-milk-he-will-release-nnamdi-kanu-to-me-kalu/

Report reaching our news desk from Makurdi, the Benue State capital, has it that there is an ongoing protest against the immediate past Governor of the state, Gabriel Suswam. The protest, DAILY POST gathered is convened by Benue Prospective Employees Forum in conjunction with Benue Democratic Youths Ambassadors For Change Initiatives. The protesters are calling on the former governor to bring back the money he reportedly stole while in office between 2007 to 2015. The protesters, who were seen displaying placards bearing various inscriptions along the Gboko-Makurdi high way, called on the anti-graft agencies to go after Suswam and his men who looted Benue State. Meanwhile, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, Samson Ikwuje has described the protest as a display of ignorance. He accused the state governor, Samuel Ortom of sponsoring the protest just to rubbish Gabriel Suswam. “That is display of ignorance and political madness. Those are hungry guys sponsored by Ortom to rubbish Dr. Suswam. Just ignore them,” he told DAILY POST on phone. http://dailypost.ng/2016/05/12/breaking-protesters-shut-down-benue-ask-suswam-to-bring-back-stolen-money-photos/

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has stated that he predicted the emergence of Boko Haram insurgency 16 years ago. Ogbeh said he had warned northern elders to guard against it by that ensuring youths in the region were productively engaged in agriculture. The minister recalled that the insurgency, which he predicted would wear a religious guise would have been prevented if his warning had been taken by the northern leaders he addressed in Kaduna in the year, 2000. Ogbeh made the disclosure when he spoke at the second day of the third edition of the Ogun State Investors’ Forum. “16 years ago, I foresaw the coming of Boko Haram sect. Then, I warned northern leaders to engage their youths productively in agriculture but no one listened me,” he said. He stated further that government should make agriculture attractive to the youth to stem rural-urban migration, and put measures in place to encourage small scale farmers and others in agro-allied sector. According to him, because of 10 per cent viscosity and starch found in Nigeria’s cassava, the product was in high demand in China. He urged the Ogun State government to take advantage of the opportunity and invest in cassava farming and processing. “We need about one million tonnes of cassava per annum in Nigeria and in the next five years, it will rise to eight million tonnes. “Apart from that, about $480million is being spent to import ethanol every year. So, I suggest that Ogun State and of course Nigeria, should take advantage of this and diversify in the cultivation as well as processing of this all important farm produce. Rice, vegetable, soya beans and sugar cane farming are other areas,” he added. http://dailypost.ng/2016/05/12/i-predicted-the-coming-of-boko-haram-16-years-ago-audu-ogbeh/
