A 27-year-old man, Peter Nweke, on Monday admitted that his gang was paid N12 million ransom when they abducted Prof. Kamene Okonjo in 2013. A statement from the police in Enugu said Nweke, who hails from Umumba Ndiagu in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, made the disclosure during interrogation. The suspect said that he was contacted by one Ifeanyi Chukwuemeka from Iselle Uku in Delta who linked him to one of the Okonjo’s family members that helped them to perfect the kidnap. He said that Chukwuemeka disguised as a corps member seeking for assistance and entered the compound and made away with the mother of former finance minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Nweke also told the police that his gang abducted a pastor’s wife and her friend as well as their driver in Ugwuoba, Oji River in Enugu State last October. He said that they demanded N4 million but later got N1.12 million from the victim. The statement, signed by the spokesman of the police in Enugu State, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, said that the anti-kidnap unit of the command arrested the suspect who escaped to Cotonou after the kidnap of Okonjo. The statement said that the suspect resurfaced in 2015 with another gang which included Ifeanyi Chukwuemeka and Ali Salli from Adamawa, both residing in Sabon Kashua, Asaba in Delta. The suspect said that he had been in kidnapping business for four years, adding that poverty drove him into the crime. “I needed money to acquire AK-47 and pump action gun from one Musa from Adamawa at Sabon Kashua, Asaba through one of his cohorts, Ali Sali to make the business easier,” Nweke said. The suspect, however, pleaded for forgiveness while advising the youth to shun crime as it was an ill wind that blew nobody good. A Federal Capital Territory, FCT High Court presided over by Justice Peter Affem has ordered that former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd) should be remanded in Kuje prison pending when he meets the conditions of his bail. Dasuki alongside Attahiru Bafarawa, former Sokoto State governor; Bashir Yuguda, former minister of state for finance, Shuaibu Salisu, and Sagir, Bafarawa’s son, were on Monday granted bail in the sum of N250 million each and were asked to provide two sureties in like sum as well as deposit their international passports at the court. The judge, while granting the accused persons bail, held that: “bail was not about setting anybody free but the primary essence of bail is to ensure that the accused person attends trial”. While adjourning the case till February 2 and 3 2016, Affem said the offences the accused persons were alleged to have committed were bailable. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had last Wednesday charged the accused persons on a 22-count of conspiracy, bribery, abuse of office and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N28 billion which they all pleaded not guilty to. Meanwhile, Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf, of the FCT High Court on Friday granted Dasuki and five other persons bail in the sum of N250m each. Dasuki alongside Salisu, a former director of finance and administration at the office of the national security adviser; Aminu Babakusa, a former general manager at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC); Acacia Holdings Limited and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited were also arraigned by the ant-graft agency on a 19-count charge bordering on money laundering and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N13bn. Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka of the Adoration Ministries based in Enugu on Friday declared that Nigeria will definitely succeed. Speaking with State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, he assured that Nigeria will overcome the challenges presently facing it. He said: “We have come to commit the nation into the hands of God and pray for peace and God should establish His blessings in our country. “We wish to pray for the revamping of the economy. We are committing Aso Rock into the hands of God. We are also here to commit Nigeria to Jesus, that this 2015 Christmas, Nigerians will say God is great. “Pray for blessing for our people, I want to assure Nigerians that in the midst of what is happening, we shall succeed, the time of promotion is coming,” he added. On the agitation for Biafra, he said that he did not discuss it with the President, saying: “I am silent on everything about Biafra.” On the claim that he is controversial, he said: “People can say what they want to say, I am a happy man.” During the last administration, the clergy had predicted the exit of former President Goodluck Jonathan from power in the period leading to the March 2015 Presidential election. True to his prediction, Jonathan lost the election to President Muhammadu Buhari. Cc: lalasticlala http://thenationonlineng.net/update-nigeria-will-overcome-challenges-mbaka/

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, said on Thursday that the arrested Shi’ite sect leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zak-Zaky, is no longer in the custody of the Army. Buratai said this when he met with a delegation from the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) at the Army Headquarters, Abuja. The Army chief, who was responding to the request by NSCIA to meet with the sect leader, said that El-Zak-Zaky had been handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution. According to Buratai, lawlessness must not be tolerated in the society especially when a part of the country is confronted with terrorism. “As a responsible and law abiding organisation, we will do all that we can to always safeguard lives and property. “As for the whereabouts of the Shi’ite leader, he is not in our custody; he has been handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution because we don’t prosecute. “What happened was avoidable and unfortunate, we followed the rules of engagement as enshrined in the constitution but what happened still happened,” he said. Buratai dismissed claims in some quarters that the Army was after members of the sect. He said that the army was only carrying out its constitutional duties. He urged members of the public to disregard information and pictures contained in a section of the media, describing them as a false reflection of what happened. Earlier in his remark, the leader of the NSCIA, Prof. Daud Noibi, said the group was at the Army headquarters on a fact-finding mission. Noibi expressed the concerns of NSCIA on the Zaria incident and reaffirmed the commitment of the council to return peace to the area. He appealed to the Army authorities to allow the delegation to meet with the arrested leader of the sect. Noibi said the NSCIA would make efforts to douse the tension that had engulfed parts of the North following Saturday’s incident in Zaria. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Noibi was accompanied on the visit by the Secretary General of the council, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede. The Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan on Thursday upheld the judgment of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal delivered on Oct. 23 in Abeokuta which upheld the victory of Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun. The five-man panel of the Appeal Court headed by Justice H.M Ogunjimiju unanimously upheld Amosun’s victory and dismissed the appeal filed by Mr Adegboyega Isiaka of PDP. Ogunjimiju held that Mr Benjamin Ibikunle, the Principal Witness for the appellant was not a credible witness, adding that his testimony could not be relied on by the court. She said that the evidence of PW9 was biased and could not be given any probative value because he informed the court that he was a member of PDP and could go to any length to ensure victory for his party. The judge said that the report of the witness was inconsistent and that there was no doubt that he did not take part in the inspection of the electoral materials. Ogunjimiju said that the witness indicated to the court that he was not an expert while his testimony indicated an opinion of an expert The panel said the court could not give any probative value to the testimony of the witness because he was not an expert. It said that only an expert opinion could be given probative value by the court, adding that the tribunal was right in dismissing the petition. The panel said that there was no place that the number of voters exceeded the number of those accredited and that the election complied with the provisions of the Electoral Act. It said that the appeal lacked merit and dismissed it while declaring Amosun as the winner of the governorship election of April 11. A former governor of old Anambra State, Jim Nwobodo, has denied media reports that he collected the sum of N500million from the former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ahmed Muazu. Many chieftains of the former ruling party were fingered in the sharing of slush funds allegedly distributed by a former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki and a former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda. Messrs. Dasuki and Yuguda are currently standing trial on charges of corruption. But in a telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Wednesday, Mr. Nwobodo said he only received the sum of N100million from the PDP for “campaign logistics” not from Mr. Dasuki. “I have never met Sambo Dasuki. I know Yuguda as former minister, that is all. What happened was that I was invited alongside 15 leaders of PDP in the South East to the residence of Ahmed Muazu to collect the money allocated to our zone by the PDP. “Three party leaders were selected from each of the five states of the South East. I was selected to lead a committee of 15 to collect the N100million, which was shared to each one of us for campaign logistics in our respective states. Mr. Nwobodo, who is currently in New York for treatment, said his party, not former party chairman, Mr. Muazu gave him the money. “I was surprised to hear that a report quoted me as saying I collected N500million from Muazu. This is sheer lie as I have never previously spoken to any journalist on this issue but today. So how come somebody concocted a figure and attributed it to me? “It was PDP as party that shared the money for campaign not for our individual use,” he said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/195314-dasukigate-i-collected-n100m-not-n500m-for-campaign-logistics-jim-nwobodo.html
