Ade Adesomoju, Abuja A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered a former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, and two of his former aides, to be remanded in Kuje Prisons, Abuja. Justice Gabriel Kolawole made the remand order after the three defendants were arraigned on 32 counts of diversion of a total sum of N9.79bn meant for Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme. Although the judge granted each of the three defendants bail in the sum of N250m, among other conditions, he ordered that they be remanded in prison pending when the Deputy Chief Registrar, Litigation, of the Federal High Court, Abuja would inform the court that the bail conditions had been met. The prosecution alleged in the 32 counts preferred against the three defendants that the total sum of N9,791,602,453.8 was meant for the SURE-P scheme and a small fraction of it for police reform. The money was allegedly diverted by the defendants between 2012 and 2015 while Suswam was the governor of the state. Chidiebube Okeoma, Owerri Commercial activities and vehicular movement were, on Monday, brought to a halt at the ever-busy Douglas Road by Christ Church/Chikwere axis in Owerri, Imo State, when a 1,000-litre kerosene tank went up in flames. Eyewitnesses who were traders told our correspondent that a kerosene distributor, identified only as Julie, had engaged the services of a welder to weld a leaking part of her surface tank which was full of kerosene. They explained that while welding the underneath of the metallic tank, the top burst and it was gutted by fire immediately, spreading all over the place wildly. The inferno, which the traders battled to quench, destroyed things, including a car that was parked beside the tank. The kerosene tank itself was razed completely; while Julie, who owned the kerosene tank, sustained injuries as a result of the burns she sustained. Our correspondent learnt that she has been rushed to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention owing to the degree of injuries she sustained. One of the eyewitnesses said, “Mrs. Julie, who was standing close to the tank, was instantly engulfed in flames and sustained a high degree of burns. “She is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.” Cc: lalasticlala, Mynd44 http://punchng.com/breaking-kerosene-tank-catches-fire-in-imo-woman-car-burnt/ |

Enyioha Opara, Minna A Minna high court on Monday remanded the Niger state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Tanko Beji, in prison till Friday when it will rule on his application for bail. Counsel for, Beji Mr. Olajide Ayodele (SAN), had asked the court to release him on bail on self-recognisance. However, the counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Gbolahan Latona (SAN), had opposed the application on the grounds that the offence for which the PDP boss was charged was not bailable by virtue of section 341 subsection 2 of the Criminal procedure code. Latona, however, said the court could use its discretion to grant the accused person bail. Earlier, the EFCC had formally charged Tanko Beji along with ex- Governor Aliyu and Umar Nasko who is the second accused person. Beji was arraigned on a count of aiding and abetting the former governor. He pleaded not guilty to the charge. Justice Aliyu Maiyaki, also ruled on Monday that the court had jurisdiction to hear the suit brought against ex- governor Aliyu, his former Chief of Staff, Umar Mohammed Nasko and Tanko Beji. Ruling on a preliminary objection raised by counsel for Umar Nasko, Mr. Mamman Mike Usman, SAN, that the court did not have jurisdiction to entertain the suit, Justice Maiyaki said: “the basis for which the application was made did not exist. ” Most of the points upon which the arguments were predicated upon are false.” Cc: lalasticlala, Mynd44 http://punchng.com/court-remands-niger-pdp-chairman-in-prison/ |
The Coalition of Northern Youths have written a letter to the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, begging him to allow Ndigbo to go and have their Biafra Republic. In the letter signed by Ambassador Shettima Yerima, Joshua Viashman, Aminu Adam, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman and Nastura Ashir Sharif, the Northern group argued that the principle of self-determination has since world war II become a part of the United Nations Charter, which states in Article 1(2) that one of the purposes of the UN is “to develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples”. They said: “Though we do not doubt Your Excellency’s bona fide concerns for the peaceful resolution of the crises, we nevertheless have reservations as to the efficacy of this approach in ensuring lasting solutions. “Our doubts are informed by the following historical antecedents that have characterized the behavior and conduct of the Igbo in Nigeria and previous efforts at containing them. “The Igbo of Eastern Nigeria manifested their hatred for Nigeria’s unity barely five years after we gained our independence from the British when on January 15, 1966, their army officers carried out the first-ever mutiny that marked the beginning of a series of crisis which has profoundly altered the course of Nigeria’s history. “By that ill motivated cowardly and deliberate action, the Igbo killed many northern officers from the rank of lieutenant colonel upwards and also decapitated the Prime Minister and the political leadership of the Northern and Western regions but left the zenith of Igbo leadership at the Federal level and the Eastern region intact. “In line with the Igbo plan, General Aguiyi-Ironsi took advantage of the vacuum and, instead of returning power to the remnants of the First Republic government, he appropriated the coup and attempted to consolidate it for his people. “Army officers of the Northern Region were eventually compelled to execute a counter coup on July 29, 1966 following a coordinated series of brazen provocations from the Igbo who taunting northerners on northern streets by mocking the way leaders of the region were slain by the Igbo. This unfortunately resulted in mob action which resulted in the death of many Igbos. “And when Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon, from the North took over as Head of State following the counter coup, the Igbo through Lt. Col. Ojukwu, characteristically refused to recognize Gowon. Ojukwu declared the secession of the Igbo people from Nigeria and the formation of the republic of Biafra on May 30, 1967 resulting in a civil war that led to the tragic deaths of more than 2 million Nigerians”. “Concerned by the fact that the Biafrans have confessed to arming themselves for a violent breakup, we feel that it is risky for the rest of the country particularly the North to go on pretending that it is safe for us to co habitate with the Igbos given how deeply they are entrenched in our societies . “And since evidently the Igbo have not been sufficiently humbled by their self imposed bloody civil violence of 1966, we are strongly concerned that nothing short of granting their Biafran dream will suffice. “And since the Igbo have virtually infiltrated every nook and cranny of Northern Nigeria where they have been received with open arms as fellow compatriots, we strongly believe that the region is no longer safe and secure in the light of the unfolding threats and the fact that for a long time, the Igbo have gone to extra ordinary lengths to ensure that in their domain in the South East, Northerners and Westerners are as much as possible disenfranchised from owning any businesses whereas in Kano alone, they own not less than 100, 000 shops across all the business districts. “That since the younger generation of Nigerians makes up for more than 60 per cent of the nation’s population, it is our hope that they inherit this country in better shape so that they can build a much better future for themselves and their offsprings in an atmosphere that is devoid of anarchy, hate, suspicion and negativity that characterize the polarized, and clearly irreconcilable differences forced on us by the Biafran Igbos”. “As the Igbo agitations persist and assume threatening dimensions, we submit that there is need to ensure that they are given the opportunity to exercise the right to self-determination as entrenched under the aforementioned international statutes to which Nigeria is a signatory. “Aware that the right of self-determination in international law is the legal right for a “people” that allows them to attain a certain degree of autonomy from a sovereign state through a legitimate political process, we strongly demand for a referendum to take place in a politically sane atmosphere where all parties will have a democratic voice over their future and the future of the nation. “The Igbo from all over the country and in the Diaspora should be advised to converge in their region in the South-East for a plesbisite to be organized and conducted by the United Nations and other regional bodies for them to categorically to decide between remaining part of Nigeria or having their separate country. “That government should at the end of the plesbite implement whatever is agreed and resolved in order to finally put this matter to rest. “Lastly, we pray His Excellency to study the references forwarded with this letter dispassionately and decide who is more in the wrong between those who openly pledge allegiance to a country other than Nigeria backing it up with persistent threats of war and those of us whose allegiance remains with the Nigerian state but simply urge that the secessionists be allowed to actualize their dream peacefully throw universally entrenched democratic options”. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is fully aware and therefore, in support of the peace and conflict resolution meetings the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has had and will still have with the South-East and northern leaders over the recent hate speeches against Ndigbo. The minister also said that there is “so much trust” between both men because the Acting President is daily in contact with President Muhammadu Buhari. Alhaji Lai Mohammed gave the comment during a programme, Politics Today, on Channels Television. Asked if President Buhari is in support of the meetings the Acting President is having with leaders of the North and South East amid growing tension in both regions, he said, “The Acting President is daily in touch with Mr. President so I am very confident that Mr. President is in the full know of what the Acting President is doing and there is so much trust between the acting president and the president. I don’t think there should be an area of concern at all.” Recall that Professor Osinbajo had, Wednesday, met, in Abuja, with the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo, the five governors of the South Eastern zone and the leadership of the zone in the National Assembly and other stakeholders from the area following the eviction threat issued by the Arewa Consultative Forum and a coalition of Arewa Youths to all Nigerians of Igbo extraction living in the 19 northern states to vacate the region before October 1st, 2017. The Acting President had in the meeting said that the Federal Government will not shy away from its responsibilities and vowed that the government would do everything within its powers to defend and uphold the terms of the nation’s constitution, which declares that Nigeria is ‘one nation under God.’ He had said, “I firmly believe that we ought to address these agitations and proclamations urgently and decisively. Burying our heads in the sand and expecting the storm to blow over of their own according is not option.” He had therefore promised Ndigbo of maximum security wherever they lived in Nigeria. Recall also that the Acting President had on Tuesday night meet with leaders from the northern states at the State house in Abuja over hate speeches and several agitation in the country. He had in that meeting cautioned that, “Every stone thrown in the market place will hit targets that are not even intended. We must address hate speeches that show intolerance and propose division.” Cc: lalasticlala, Mynd44 http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/06/quit-notice-buhari-in-support-of-osinbajos-meetings-with-south-east-northern-leaders-lai-mohammed/

Chidiebube Okeoma, Owerri Association of South East Town Unions on Friday called the Arewa Consultative Forum, Northern Elders Forum and all the stakeholders in the North to call their youths to order over the threat for Igbo residents to leave the region before October 1, 2017. A statement signed by Chief Emeka Diwe, National President and Dr Innocent Oneubuya which was issued in Owerri, the Imo State capital stated that such threat portends great danger for national security and unity. The statement read in part “such Declaration portends great danger to national security and is capable of worsening the already fragile security situation in the country.the Igbo have done nothing to deserve such threat to their lives and property. We have never killed nor threatened to kill anybody. In the context of Nigeria’s current challenges, we believe that any misgivings held by the ethnic nationalities of Nigeria can be sorted out amicably”. The Association asserted that the Igbo Observed a sit-at-home on May 30,2017, in memory of the Biafra agitators who died during the Civil War and recently was not reasonable enough for the Northern youths to threaten the people of South East who were living and doing businesses in Northern Nigeria. According to it, the Igbo people in line with their culture had great respect for the dead. “The Igbo Nation observed a day of mourning in remembrance of over three million Igbos that were killed in the Civil War (1967-1970), should not be a reason for Northern Youths to declare that the Igbo should leave Northern Nigeria, latest October 1, 2017. It is our culture to honour the dead. The Sit-at-Home was necessitated by our consciousness to observe the mourning in the most peaceful manner. We therefore, with due respect, call on the Arewa Consultative Forum and other relevant Stakeholders in Northern Nigeria to timely call these Youths to order. We believe they have the wisdom and capacity to tame the exuberance of the Youths. No one stands to gain from the unimaginable consequences of such threat if eventually executed. A peaceful solution, no matter how expensive, is cheaper than the smallest war”. The statement observed. The group equally appealed to Igbo Leaders and Stakeholders to refrain from issuing any inflammatory statements, adding that “An eye for an eye will make all of us go blind”.
