EducationFG Can’t Pay LAUTECH Workers’ Salaries – Senate by DONSMITH123(op): 4:15pm On Jul 12, 2017
Leke Baiyewu, Abuja

The Senate has said the Federal Government cannot disburse the N4bn currently needed by the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology,
Ogbomoso, as the institution is state-owned.

At the plenary on Wednesday, the lawmakers stated that Oyo and Osun States, who jointly own the institution, should resolve the crisis
bedeviling the school.

They pointed out that the Federal Government could only invest in capital projects in the institution and not spend on payment of salaries and allowances of workers.

The position was taken when lawmaker representing Oyo North Senatorial District, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, in a motion titled ‘Urgent Need for the Federal Government to Intervene in LAUTECH Imbroglio in Order to Save the Future of the Innocent Youths,’ said the institution needed N4bn to pay accumulated salaries and allowances arrears.

He said, “The Senate is disturbed that LAUTECH, which hitherto had the reputation of being the best state-owned university in the country,
now has nothing to her credit than the reputation of being the most strike-ridden university in the country, as the university cannot
escape an academic year without going on strike for 10 months or more due to persistent non-payment of salaries of the members of staff;

“The Senate is worried by the fact that the university is currently in the middle of a strike, which has crippled the activities of the
university for more than a year due to the inability of the parent states to provide the sum of N4bn to pay the accumulated salaries and
arrears of members of staff and, thereby, leaving over 3000 members of staff of the University wallowing in economic hardship and poverty.

“It is saddening that the careers of over 34,000 students of the University are currently in jeopardy, turning them to social
miscreants and leaving the parents who had laboured to give their wards quality education languishing in pains and agonies for no fault
of theirs.”

PoliticsBiafra: Court Shifts Resumption Of Kanu, Others Trial To Oct 17 by DONSMITH123(op): 1:05pm On Jul 11, 2017
ABUJA – The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, fixed October 17 to begin full-blown hearing into the treasonable felony charge the Federal Government entered against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

FG is prosecuting Kanu alongside three other pro-Biafra agitators- Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.

Their trial which was originally billed to commence this week, was shifted till October considering that the high court has embarked on its annual vacation. The prosecution had in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015, alleged that Kanu, being the leader of IPOB, conspired with his co-defendants and others now at large, on diverse dates in 2014 and 2915, in Nigeria and London, to broadcast on Radio Biafra monitored in Enugu and other areas, preparations for states in the South-East and South-South zones and other communities in Kogi and Benue states, to secede from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with a view to constituting same into a Republic of Biafra.

Though trial Justice Binta Nyako had in a ruling on April 25 released Kanu on bail after he had spent a year and seven months in detention, the court however okayed his co-defendants to remain in prison custody. Justice Nyako said her decision to release Kanu who is the 1st defendant, on bail, was on health ground.

The court also rejected FG’s claim that the defendants were members of an illegal organisation. Justice Nyako said the fact that IPOB was not an organisation registered in Nigeria did not make it an illegal society.

Kanu who was hitherto the Director of Radio Biafra and Television, had through his lawyers, insisted that IPOB was duly registered in over 30 countries including the United Kingdom. He had on December 12, 2016, threatened in the open court that he would in the course of the trial, expose secrets he said would sink Nigeria.

The defendants who are answering to a five-count charge equally alleged plot by FG to import foreigners to testify against them. Kanu is facing four out of the five count charges.

The trial judge had earlier granted FG the nod to shield identities of all the witnesses billed to testify in the matter. The court directed that the witnesses who are mostly security operatives would testify behind a screen or wear mask when the need arises, a decision the defendants protested against, insisting that it was wrong for the court to allow “masquerades” to give evidence against them.

While dismissing some of the previous charges against the defendants, Justice Nyako held that FG could not establish any ingredient of crime in its allegation that Kanu had between March and April 2015, imported into Nigeria a radio Transmitter known as TRAM 50L and kept it in a container that was left in custody of the 3rd defendant, Madubugwu, at Ubuluisiuzor in Ihiala LGA of Anambra State.

The court however held that Kanu has a case to answer pertaining to allegation in count-four that he lied that the Radio Transmitter was concealed in a container of used household items which the defendant declared as unused household items. Whereas the court struck out counts 3, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11 of the charges, it however sustained counts 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8.

The sustained charges, to which all the defendants entered a plea of not guilty to, borders on conspiracy, treasonable felony, publication of defamatory matter and Kanu’s alleged importation of goods contrary and punishable under section 47(2) (a) of the Customs and Excise Management Act, Cap C45, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

In count three of the pending charges, FG alleged that Kanu had in a broadcast he made in London on April 28, 2015, through Radio Biafra, referred to President Muhammadu Buhari as “a paedophile, a terrorist, an idiot and an embodiment of evil”. Madubugwu was specifically accused of having in his possession at his house, one Emerald Magnum Pump Action Gun with serial number TS 870- 113- 0046, one Delta Magnum Pump Action Gun with serial number 501, and 41 Cartridges/ Ammunition, without lawful authority or licence.

Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Ltd. trading as Etisalat Nigeria on Tuesday informed its customers that the change of brand name will not affect its operations.

The Vice President, Regulatory and Corporate Affairs, EMTS, Mr Ibrahim Dikko, in a statement said that EMTS was aware of recent news reports regarding Etisalat Group’s withdrawal of the right to the continued use of the Etisalat brand in Nigeria by EMTS.

He said that EMTS had a valid and subsisting agreement with the Etisalat Group.

According to him, the agreement entitles EMTS to use the Etisalat brand notwithstanding the recent changes within the company.

“Indeed, discussions are ongoing between EMTS and Etisalat Group pertaining to the continued use of the brand.

“EMTS will issue a formal statement once discussions are concluded.

“The final outcome on the use of the brand in no way affects the operations of the business as our full range of services remain available to our customers,’’ he said.

Dikko said that EMTS launched in Nigeria in 2008 with “0809ja’’ to affirm the “Nigerianness’’ of its origin and sphere of influence.

He said that in nine years of operation, the company remained a prime driver and avid supporter of the Nigerian spirit of excellence.

According to him, the telecommunications company will continue to stay true to its “Naijacentric identity’’.

“This notion is strongly reflected in our core messages and depicted in major projects and initiatives, which we have been known to support.

“All these initiatives have their foundation embedded in supporting key aspects of the Nigerian fabric: building Nigerian businesses and empowering Nigerians with a focus on the youth.

“Nigeria remains the soul of EMTS’ business and we have made the brand alluring to our teeming subscribers, who see a piece of the spirit and character of Nigeria in everything we do.

“EMTS is here to stay and we wish to assure our esteemed customers that our core values of youthfulness, customer-centricity, and innovation will remain the pillars on which we operate.

“We thank our esteemed customers for their abiding faith in us,’’ Dikko said.

Since the month of March, Etisalat Group has been having the issues with the consortium of 13 banks over the payment $1.2bn loan.

The group had on Monday given Etisalat Nigeria three weeks ultimatum to stop the usage of its brand name.
