Former Abia State governor, Orji Kalu, on Tuesday received the leaders of the Coalition of Arewa Youths led by its chairman, Shettima Yerima. The meeting held in Kalu’s house Tuesday afternoon. Kalu shared what was discussed on his Facebook page. He wrote: “It is the same group that made the Kaduna declaration in which three months quit notice was given to the Igbo living in the North. The quit notice has actually been a source of worry to me because I knew the commitments of our people around the world not to talk more of being economic migrants in nature. “The unnecessary uprising caused by the quit notice inundated me to call them to order as nothing is too much to be sacrificed for peace. I believe the actions of these youth were borne out of frustration and I am happy that they have promised me today that they will further consult to sheath their swords and denounce their declaration. “Today, they have given me their word of embracing peace and maintaining that no harm shall befall any of our people in the North. I believe in a united Nigeria where fairness, equity and justice are instituted. I also believe that our lives are sacrosanct and no Igbo blood should be spilled at any slightest provocation again.” http://dailypost.ng/2017/08/01/quit-notice-igbos-arewa-youths-told-orji-kalu/

Nigerian Senate on Wednesday approved independent candidature for the country’s electoral process. The approval on Wednesday was part of the ongoing amendment of the 1999 constitution. Before now, only political parties could sponsor candidates for elections in the country. The development means candidates can now vie for elective positions without joining a party. The amendment had sought to move certain items to the concurrent legislative list to give more powers to the States. During the electronic voting on the amendment of the constitution, 46 senators voted in support of the proposal, while 48 senators voted against and one abstained. http://dailypost.ng/2017/07/26/breaking-senate-okays-independent-candidature-elections-rejects-devolution-powers/

Ade Adesomoju, Abuja Barely five days after a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Maitama, Abuja, granted bail to a former Governor of Jigawa State, Saminu Turaki, a Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday ordered his remand in Kuje Prison, Abuja. Although Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court granted bail to the ex-governor on fresh bail conditions on Tuesday, he ordered the defendant to remain in Kuje Prisons, Abuja, pending when the bail conditions were met. Justice Dimgba gave the order shortly after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission re-arraigned Turaki and three companies on 32 counts of money laundering offences involving about N37bn. The defendants allegedly committed the offences between 2006 and 2007 while the former governor was in office. Turaki, alongside his co-defendants — INC Natural Resources Ltd., Arkel Construction Nigeria Ltd and Wildcat Construction Ltd — were earlier arraigned before the Dutse, Jigawa State Division of the Federal High Court, in 2011. But he was said to have since evaded trial until the EFCC, acting on an arrest warrant issued against Turaki by the court in Dutse about three years ago, arrested him on July 4, 2017, at an event in Abuja. While the EFCC was facilitating how to produce him before the court in Dutse, the judge went on his annual vacation and Turaki then filed a rights enforcement suit before the FCT High Court in Abuja, seeking an order of the court releasing him from the anti-graft agency’s custody. He also filed an interlocutory application which he urged the court to consider before the hearing of the main suit. The application was opposed by the EFCC on the grounds that with Turaki’s antecedent of jumping bail earlier granted him six years ago by the Federal High Court in Dutse and his evasion of the arrest warrant issued by the same court about three years ago, he would likely jump bail again. But in his ruling on Thursday, Justice Yusuf Halilu of the FCT High Court granted bail to the ex-governor on conditions which merely required him to submit his travel documents to the registry of the court, produce “two reasonable sureties” residing in Abuja, and sign a register to be opened at the EFCC’s office every two weeks. But instead of releasing him, the EFCC filed afresh in the Federal High Court in Abuja, the same set of charges already pending against the defendants before the court in Dutse. The anti-graft agency then re-arraigned Turaki and the three companies before Justice Dimgba in Abuja, being the only judge sitting as a vacation judge in the northern region of the country while the other Federal High Court judges proceed on vacation. After Turaki pleaded not guilty to the 32 counts on Tuesday, Justice Dimgba said he was inclined to granting bail to the ex-governor “in deference” to the earlier bail granted the defendant by Justice Halilu of the FCT High Court. He asked the prosecution and the defence led by Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN), to agree on the bail conditions to be imposed on the defendant. The judge resumed sitting after about 10 minutes. A labour leader, Mr Isa Aremu, on Monday, appealed to the Federal Government to constitute a national minimum wage review committee without delay to alleviate workers’ suffering. “There is no way the economy can recover with poorly paid workers,’’ Aremu, General Secretary, National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, said. The Federal Government had on May 23 said that it would set up a 29- member committee to review the minimum wage. The Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress have been agitating for an increase in minimum wage from N18,000 to N56,000. According to Aremu, there is no need for delaying constitution of the committee since it has been approved by the Federal Executive Council. He said that increase in the wage should not be tied to increase in government revenue. “Increase in wage is a matter of law and not based on government revenue generation. “It is long overdue; our patience is running out. We have already lost two years. “We hope the organised labour will not resort to industrial action. The government should avoid this. “Previously, there was no increase in wage without a nationwide strike, and strike is not healthy for anybody. We have enough problem in the economy,” Aremu said. He said that the payment of a correct wage at the right time was a major way to economic recovery. He, however, commended Acting President Yemi Osibanjo for giving an executive order on ease of doing business. Aremu said that the government’s decision would improve investment and develop the economy.
