Adelani Adepegba, Abuja The leader of Utako Community, Abuja, Alhaji Abdullahi Isha, has cried out to the police over the influx of sex hawkers into the community. He lamented that the presence of the prostitutes had also attracted men of shady characters to the community. Isah, who said this during the Federal Capital Territory Eminent Persons Forum organised by the police on Tuesday in Abuja, called on the FCT Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Mustafa, to come to the rescue of his community. The chief expressed displeasure over the activities of the sex hawkers and pleaded with the police authorities to deploy personnel to the community to arrest the development and restore sanity to the area. He said, “I want to call the attention of the Commissioner of Police to the activities of prostitutes who have taken over my community. Their population in the community has increased in recent times and they are also attracting criminal elements. We want the police to come and address the situation before things get out of hand.” A participant at the forum, who is a retired commissioner of police, Lawrence Alobi, called on the FCT residents to support the police financially, noting that the Force was not getting enough funding for its operations. He argued that the police would perform better, if provided with the necessary equipment and logistics. He admonished the residents to emulate Lagos State, which he said empowered the police with vehicles, helicopters and other equipment to enable them to perform their responsibilities more effectively. “Let us all support the police financially, even with N100 every month. You can’t send a child to fetch water with empty hands,” he stated. Presenting what he described as his scorecard, Mustafa said the FCT Police Command had arrested 408 suspects, prosecuted 247 and secured the conviction of 216 between August and October, 2016. He also explained that his men recovered from suspects, 42 firearms, 250 ammunition, 27 bags of cannabis, 72 vehicles, 44 motorcycles, and over N3mn cash. The CP said, “Having identified through intelligence that ‘one chance’ robbers have designated certain spots they use as shrines to dispossess their victims, the command has launched a campaign to destroy the shrines and a lot of shrines have so far been destroyed. The operation will be sustained,” Mustafa said. http://punchng.com/prostitutes-taken-community-abuja-chief-laments/

Contrary to opinions in some quarters that the Senate would not approve the N180bn request by President Muhammadu Buhari for the virement of funds appropriated in the 2016 Appropriation Act; the upper legislative chamber on Tuesday dazzled Nigerians by not only approving the said amount; but also increased the virement to the tune of N213,821,671,494. The Senate also approved additional request of N300m appropriated in the 2016 Budget under the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for the construction of 132 KVA substation at Gwaram, Jigawa state. President Muhammadu Buhari had about a month ago written to the National Assembly, requesting that a total of N180bn be approved as virement of funds appropriated in the 2016 Appropriation Act; to attend to some critical capital and recurrent expenditures. The Senate considered the request and referred it to its committee on Appropriations for further legislative action on Wednesday 16th November 2016. Presenting the report on Tuesday, the Chairman, Committee on Appropriations, Senator Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central) said, “the committee met with its House counterpart and deliberated on the course of action in order to abridge time. And also jointly had an interactive meeting with the affected MDAs on the virement, that is, the source of the funds and the expenditure MDAs in the Budget to clarify the need for the virement.” To justify the rationale behind approving far above the requested sum, Senator Goje said, “the affected MDAs justified the need for intervention in their respective Agencies and some also made the point that the amount proposed in the request was inadequate to meet the observed shortfall required to carry out their mandate and financial obligations”. “In the course of the interaction with the MDAs, the committee observed that there are other areas of critical need that are capable of stimulating the economy which additional funds can still be provided with monies vired from the Special Intervention Programme,” he added. A critical analysis of the report of the Committee shows that the Senate approved the sum of N167,113,304,018 for recurrent expenditures as against the N165,430,886,954 requested for in Buhari’s letter. The committee also approved the sum of N2,500,000,000 as Statutory Transfer in the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) salary shortfall, instead of N1,200,000,000 requested by the President. Another look at the report shows that President Buhari requested for the sum of N14,208,367,476 as capital expenditure for Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and Presidential Initiative for the North East (PINE); whereas, the Senate approved the sum of N39,208,367,476. Though there were divergent of opinions, especially from the opposition members of the Senate on the propriety or otherwise of the recommendations of the committee, majority of the Senators present gave a voice votes in support, thereby adopting the report of the Committee and approved a total sum of N213,821,671,494, in addition to N300m as virement of funds for President Buhari. http://dailypost.ng/2016/11/29/breaking-news-n180bn-virement-funds-senate-approves-n214bn-buhari/

The Presidential campaign spokesperson, Femi Fani-Kayode, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to release some high profile detainees in the country, saying their detention was illegal and barbaric. The former Aviation Minister, who took to his twitter handle, called on the President to release former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col Sambo Dasuki(rtd), leader of the Indigeous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Warimpa Dudafa and former FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed. All accused persons are currently in custody of security agencies over their alleged involvement in corrupt practices and for alleged treason. The tweet reads: “Col Sambo Dasuki has been illegally detained under the most hideous condition for one year, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu for one year, Mr Warimpa Dudafa for eight month and Sen Bala Mohammed for one month. “This is wicked, barbaric, and inhuman. It is a gross violation of their human rights and civil liberties. “None of them have been convicted of any crime and the courts have ordered that each of them be released. “I hereby call on President Muhammadu Buhari to RELEASE them and allow them to go home to their families.” Cc: lalasticlala http://dailypost.ng/2016/11/28/continuous-detention-dasuki-kanu-others-wicked-barbaric-fani-kayode/
