Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday morning picked up the President of Masters Energy Oil and Gas Limited, Mr. Uche Ogah, on the premises of a Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Tinubu, Lagos Island. Ogah was arrested as soon as he stepped out of the courtroom after the forgery charges filed against him by the Police were withdrawn. Ogah, who was declared winner of the last governorship election in Abia State by Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court in Abuja on June 27 was, on June 16, arraigned by the Police for alleged forgery. But the police on Monday morning withdrew the charges. When the case was called, the Police prosecutor, Henry Obiazi, told the presiding magistrate, Mrs. Kikelomo Ayeye, that he had the instruction of the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to withdraw the charges against Ogah and his co-defendants. “I am instructed by the IGP to withdraw this case, as the issue is pending with the SFU,” Obiazi said. The charges were consequently struck out by the court. But as soon as Ogah stepped out of the court room, he was arrested by the waiting EFCC operatives who drove him away in their van. A source at the EFCC said the commission had received a petition from the complainant in the case against Ogah. The source said Ogah was being interrogated, adding that others would also be invited. The other defendants in the charge which the Police withdrew against Ogah were his company, Masters Energy Oil and Gas Limited; and an ex-employee of United Bank for Africa, Deji Somoye. The defendants were accused of conspiring with some persons still at large to forge a Memorandum of Understanding between Masters Energy Oil and Gas Limited and Mut-Hass Petroleum Limited sometime in March 2011. Ogah and some other persons still at large were alleged to have forged the signature of one Mrs. Bridget Adeosun. The charges read, “That you, Masters Energy Oil and Gas Limited, Uche Ogah, and others at large sometime in March 2011 at Ikeja, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to wit: forgery. “That you, Masters Energy Oil and Gas Limited, Uche Ogah, and others at large, on the same date, time, place and in the aforementioned magisterial district, did forge the signature of one Mrs. Bridget Adeosun and a document known as MoU between Mut-Hass Petroleum Limited and Masters Energy Oil and Gas Limited, with an intent that it may be in any way used or acted upon as genuine. “That you, Deji Somoye, United Bank for Africa and others still at large, sometime in August 2011, at UBA regional office, Palmgrove, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did knowing that Masters Energy Oil and Gas Limited designed to commit an offence, failed to use all reasonable means to prevent the commission or the completion of the crime.” The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty; after which they were admitted to bail in the sum of N200,000 each, with one surety each in like sum. http://punchng.com/efcc-arrests-uche-ogah-outside-lagos-courtroom/

The UK on Monday appealed to Nigeria to abolish the death penalty, saying that capital punishment cheapened human life. The UK made the appeal in a statement issued by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright, on the 2016 World Day against the Death Penalty. Arkwright said that the British Government believed the death penalty had no place in the modern world and its use undermined human dignity. According to him, there is no conclusive evidence of its deterrent value, adding that any miscarriage of justice leading to its imposition is irreversible and irreparable. He explained that the past two decades had seen a significant rise in the number of countries that had abolished capital punishment. “I am concerned therefore that Nigeria, a model for democracy in Africa, still retains the death penalty in its laws. “In 2013 Nigeria carried out four executions, the first since 2006. “At the time of the execution, all four individuals still had appeals to halt their executions, a violation of international law and I believe Nigerian law too.” He said while no death sentence had been implemented since 2013, Nigeria had more than 1,000 prisoners on death row, the highest number of death sentences in Africa. “In 2015, Nigeria recorded 171 death sentences. This year too, there have been death sentences handed down by Nigerian courts,” he said. http://dailypost.ng/2016/10/10/uk-appeals-nigeria-abolish-death-penalty/

Immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has accused Nigerian politicians of living extravagant lives. According to him, one of the biggest challenges confronting the commission is the reckless mindset of politicians, who believe that winning an election is a do-or-die affair. Jega, made history in 2015 after he presided over the commission that conducted the first election to unseat a sitting president in Nigeria. Jega spoke in Lagos on Saturday at the 50th birthday ceremony of the National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN). He delivered a paper entitled, “Challenges and prospects of sustainable credible elections in Nigeria.” Jega said, “INEC, as an election management body, faced perhaps its greatest challenge containing the predisposition and reckless mindset of Nigerian politicians. I quite often say that Nigeria has a special breed of politicians – ‘militicians’. “They generally tend to believe that political power, through election, has to be captured and this has to be done by hook or by crook; and by any means necessary. Tony Okafor, Awka A House of Representatives member for Orumba North-South in Anambra State, Mr. Sopuluchukwu Ezeonwuka, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to come to terms with his position as the President of Nigeria. Ezeonwuka spoke at Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Saturday during his reception by the Okeani General Assembly. He accused the Buhari administration of bigotry and lopsidedness in actions. He said, “The moment you contested an election and won, you become the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and not the President of the North or South. “Check out the appointments made by President Muhammadu Buhari, south easterners were nowhere. In appointments of 24 persons, you have 21 from the North, one or two in the South-West, one in the South-South, and none in the South-East. “It’s quite unfortunate that Buhari has not yet assumed the position of the President of Nigeria. He is like somebody on a specific mission.” The lawmaker, who is a member of the House Committee on Customs, pointed out that no person of Igbo origin was represented in the Customs management. “The APC government should know that we are an integral part of this country called Nigeria. One thing is clear, the marginalisation of the Igbo will not last long. If you keep telling some people that you don’t want them, they can take a decision,” he said. Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River has said that he was called by God to govern Cross River to provide needed dividends of democracy to the people. Ayade made the statement on Friday while addressing thousands of supporters who came to receive him at Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar on arrival from Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the supporters besieged the airport in solidarity with Ayade ahead of the Dec. 9 Supreme Court judgement in a case of alleged falsification of his age. The case was instituted by Mr Joe Agi, Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Agi, who contested the 2015 PDP governorship primary with Ayade, had challenged the eligibility of the governor to contest the primary. Ayade told his supporters at the airport that since power comes from God, he was called by God to govern the state at this particular time. He said: “I was preparing to run election for the senate when God called me and said I should come and be governor. I am a servant of God and I urge you all to put me in prayers. “God shall not forsake us at this point; His miracle will prevail at the appointed time. When the righteous people are ruling, God will take control. “God has the final say in this case. You can have the capacity to manipulate man, but you cannot manipulate God. “I came into this office as governor under the inspiration of God. “Today, we are before the court of man to decide the faith and destiny of Cross River people. God shall take control and establish himself. “Truly, in the name of God, I am totally innocent. If I come before the court of man, I come with supplication for clemency from God.’’ The governor said that his administration had not failed in paying salaries of civil servants in the state and urged the people to continue to support his administration. “I dedicate today to God that if I truly came to serve the people, He will surely see us through. If the worst happens, then it is God’s will. “We have no capacity to appeal at this level. We are now appealing to God that knows our hearts in this case in question.’’ Mr George Ekpungu, the state Commissioner for New Cities Development, told NAN in an interview at the airport that the people of the state would resist any attempt to remove Ayade from his seat. Ekpungu said that the people of the state voted massively for him, hence they entrusted him with their mandate. iamdynamite:He's nothing but a pretender? can anyone really take Fayose by his words? |
The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has condemned the treatment being meted out to a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ahmed Tinubu, in the party. It will be recalled that a group known as the All Progressives Congress Youths Democratic Frontiers, APCYDF, had protested at the National Headquarters of the APC against Tinubu’s demand that the party’s national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun should resign. But reacting to the development in the APC, Fayose said the “humiliation of Tinubu is as good as (the) humiliation of the Yoruba race.” The governor, in a statement by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, said allowing Tinubu to be embarrassed like past Yoruba leaders was not in the best interest of the race. According to Fayose, “Even though I am not a member of APC and I will never be, I have elected to stand in defence of the Yoruba nation once again by saying no to the continuous dishonourable treatment being meted to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, having paid his dues. “If Tinubu is allowed to be embarrassed and disgraced just the way our past leaders were humiliated by these same elements, the Yoruba nation would have been made to suffer for uprightness.” Condemning Tuesday’s protest by APC’s youth, Fayose said, “It is unfortunate that Tinubu is now being vilified in a party he invested heavily in; and his fellow kinsmen that he brought up politically are part of this conspiracy. “In their desperation, they have even tried to set him against the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, by insinuating that he tried to prevent his (Osinbajo) emergence as President Mohammadu Buhari’s running mate. This is sad! “When other tribes protect their own, it is becoming historically common among the Yoruba to allow themselves to be used against their leaders just for momentary political gains at the expense of the collective interests of the Yoruba nation. “It should be noted that late Chief Obafemi Awolowo was sent to jail by the conspiracy and collaboration of some Yoruba with the external aggressors. “Most importantly, it is my position that irrespective of political affiliation, no leader of the Yoruba nation must be vilified unduly, especially by the same people who humiliated our past leaders such as Obafemi Awolowo, Adekunle Ajasin, Bola Ige, Bisi Onabanjo, Lateef Jakande, and others. “To me, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu should not be seen just as an APC leader, but acknowledged as a major stakeholder in the Yoruba nation that we must all protect beyond politics. ”It should be recalled that these were among the issues that I raised when I visited Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State a few months ago on the need to work together beyond party affiliations. “Here in Yorubaland, it is said that if a household is at peace, it is because the bastard child of the family is yet to attain the age of maturity and those people that Asiwaju Tinubu made, but are now being used against him, should watch it. “I therefore condemn this conspiracy against Asiwaju Tinubu and I admonish those that are hoping to make political benefits from it to have a rethink.” Calling for unity among Yoruba nation, the governor said, “We are first Yoruba before becoming members of political parties. It is my opinion that our leaders must be defended and protected, not minding the personal gains of today.” Cc: lalasticlala http://dailypost.ng/2016/10/07/apc-crises-humiliating-tinubu-dishonouring-entire-yoruba-race-fayose/

The Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, has berated the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate in the ongoing governorship election in the state, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, for claiming to be a pastor. Addressing reporters, the Governor described Ize-Iyamu, who is his former campaign director, as a “pathological liar”, who “lies effortlessly”. Oshiomhole stressed that the PDP flag bearer is not worthy of being addressed as a pastor for alleging that some All Progressives Congress, APC, governors, including Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos and Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna, were in the state to perfect ways of rigging the governorship election. According to the governor,“I have always said that Ize-Iyamu is not a pastor because one of the 10 commandments of God includes… but the man claims to believe in Jesus Christ, lies effortlessly like a pathological liar, and he insists he must be addressed as a pastor. “Governor Ambode is too busy in Lagos and he is not registered to vote in Edo. Governor Ambode is a golden fish, there is no hiding place for him so where did they find him? Let them produce the photograph. “It is because of the nature of our democracy… people who have criminal records are not supposed to vote. I am sure Governor Ambode is in Lagos doing what he was voted to do and we don’t need his help to come and vote for us because he didn’t need my help to vote for him in Lagos. “El-Rufai is not here and if there is a place where the media is visible, I believe it is Edo state. Is it really in the mouth of a non-believer to parody the truth? You are the people who have the training/skill for what elsewhere is called investigative journalism, so it is for you to go round everywhere and find out whether any of these people are in town. “The world has changed that even pathological liars have limits to how much lie they can tell, you know. The PDP is already smelling defeat; they want to start the process of creating confusion and distraction. “You see, we are using valuable airtime now to discuss non-issue but I challenge the media, and this is sometimes my frustration, don’t take it from me, don’t take it from them. There are many ways to establish where the man is. “The world has changed; we are no longer in an analogue age where one-eyed man can be leading blind men. Nigerians are not blind and a blind-eye pastor cannot lead us. So, please, let’s spend our time discussing serious issue.” Oshiomhole had last week alleged that Ize-Iyamu connived with a former governor of the state, Lucky Igbinedion to divert N4 billion bank loan to a private bank account in Lagos.
