Mudiaga Affe, Calabar Security guards attached to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs in Calabar on Wednesday denied staff access to the Cross River State office. The aggrieved casual security workers alleged that they have not been paid for over five months. It was learnt that the ministry’s offices in the other states of operation, namely Akwa Ibom, Delta, Edo, Rivers, Ondo, Abia, Imo and Bayelsa were also shut down for the same reason. Staff members were seen loitering around the complex, while the security guards locked the gate in order to prevent vehicular movement into the premises located along Parliamentary Extension Road in Calabar. One of the aggrieved workers who spoke on condition of anonymity said life had become unbearable for them since the development. She lamented that they took the action in order to draw the ministry’s attention to their plight. “They last paid us in March 2016 and each time we complained, they promised that we would soon be paid. Life has become unbearable for us in this harsh economy. “Apart from salary, the little welfare package that used to go round, especially during festive period, was not extended to us. Yet, we come to work everyday to perform our duties. “We were contract staff, but the contract was terminated in February 2015; but some of us were retained, but since then, we have only been paid thrice. “There are eight security men and six cleaners here. As I speak, what is happening here is also happening in all the other southern states where we have the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs,” she said. A top official who did not want his name mentioned because he was not authorised to speak, said the issues raised would be resolved at the ministry’s head office in Abuja. http://punchng.com/guards-deny-ministrys-staff-access-office-unpaid-salary/

Ramon Oladimeji The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday vowed that the wife of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, would not go scot-free if its investigation uncovers evidence of corruption against her. The Deputy Director of Operations, EFCC, Mr. Iliyasu Kwarbai, made this vow after receiving a petition against Patience and the ruling All Progressives Congress from a group of protesters, under the aegis of Human Rights Defenders and Advocacy Centre, who marched to the EFCC office in Ikoyi Lagos. The group submitted a petition entitled, ‘Demand for arrest, prosecution of Patience Jonathan, probe of APC campaign fund and no more sacred cow in the anti-corruption crusade.’ In the said petitioned signed by its President, Queen Ameh, and Chairman of its Board of Trustees, Innocent Agbo, HRDAC accused the EFCC of being selective in its anti-graft war, wondering why Patience was still walking freely in spite of the evidence, which they said the EFCC had against her. The group asked the EFCC to change its slogan from ‘Nobody is above the law’, since it had found it difficult to go after the likes of Patience, and ex-Presidents, including Ibrahim Babangida, Abdusalam Abubakar, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan. The protesters also challenged the EFCC to probe the source of the election campaign fund of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2015 election, while also demanding a probe the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi. Addressing the EFCC, Agbo said, “You have found evidence incriminating Patience Jonathan but we are surprised that Patience Jonathan is still allowed to be walking freely, and even had the audacity to take the EFCC to court to release same money to her.” http://punchng.com/patience-jonathan-wont-go-scot-free-efcc/

Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday disclosed how Germany worked the diplomatic channel to ensure his release from jail under the military regime of late Head of State, General Sani Abacha. The former President was speaking at the 40th anniversary of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, a German non-governmental organisation, NGO, in Nigeria, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. Obasanjo recalled how the organization was among those that fought for his freedom, adding that it bestowed on him a Human Rights award received on his behalf by his late wife, Stella. He said, “I was arrested, put in jail. I would have rotten away, but Friedrich Ebert Stiftung embarked on vigorous campaign towards my release. For me and my family, we shall remain grateful to them.” The former president, who also ruled Nigeria as a military Head of State, was the chairman of the event, where he noted that the relationship between Germany and Nigeria had come a long way and has continued to grow. He added, “Nigeria and Germany’s relationship has come a long way. It has gone well in the interest of both countries. Nigeria feels good with the relationship with Germany.” Cc: lalasticlala http://dailypost.ng/2016/10/11/germany-fought-freedom-abachas-jail-obasanjo/

President Muhammadu Buhari is reported to have directed relevant authorities to recover funds said to have been misappropriated by a former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col Sambo Dasuki(rtd), and set him free. This revelation is coming that a time when a Professor of International Studies and author of Buhari’s biography, ‘Muhammadu Buhari: The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria’ had stated that there was no rift between the President and Dasuki, pointing out that they are in-laws . The Department of State Services, DSS, had in December arrested Dasuki for allegedly misappropriating $15 billion of funds meant for purchase of arms for troops fighting Boko Haram terrorists in the North East. Dasuki has been in detention since his arrest despite been granted bail by several Nigerian courts and recently the ECOWAS regional court, which ruled that he be released. Disclosing this yesterday in Abuja, an aide to Buhari assured that the former NSA will be released once the misappropriated funds under his watch is returned, Vanguard reports The aide said, “I can tell you that the President is not comfortable with the continued detention of Dasuki despite the offences he allegedly committed against Nigeria and its people. “The only condition Mr. President has asked Dasuki to fulfil is to refund the huge sum of public funds which were allegedly diverted under his watch as the NSA. “And I want to tell you that we have the approval of Mr. President to release him (Dasuki) from detention as soon as he brings the money,” the official said.
