PoliticsIgbos Don’t Trust Themselves – Ekwueme by DONSMITH123(op): 6:06pm On Oct 17, 2016
Elder statesman and Second Republic Vice president, Dr. Alex Ekwueme has affirmed that the Igbo people of Nigeria are the second most important people created by God after the ‘white men’.

According to him, though the people occupy a special place in the heart of God, they find it difficult to trust themselves.

He said until the trust is restored, there won’t be progress in the land.

Ekwueme, spoke at the traders’ summit at Amaokpala in Orumba Norht local government area of the state.

He recalled that Igbos were strongly united before and immediately after Nigerian Independence and wondered what went wrong over the years, considering what is currently happening in the Igbo –speaking states of the country.

He said: “When I returned to Nigeria after my studies abroad, I worked for the then ESSO West Africa Limited and the job took me to many cities in the Northern part of the country. I found out that there was no place you would go and won’t find an Igbo man and they all cooperated well.

“If you wanted to buy APC medicine in any city in the North, whether it was Kano, Maiduguri, Kaduna, Bauchi, Bida, Minna, anywhere, it was an Igbo person that would sell it to you. Igbo people were so industrious that Northerners were saying that after the white man, the next most important person created by God was Igbo.

When Igbo was Igbo, there was so much unity, such that once Igbo leaders met and took a decision, every Igbo person would abide by it. The trust among Igbo was responsible for the reason apprenticeship became popular with the result that parents would allow their children to stay with an established Igbo man to learn a trade for periods ranging from five to 10 years after which the apprentice would then be settled to start his own business.

“Even after the settlement, the newly settled young trader would be getting goods on credit from his former master and return the money after sale because of the trust that existed. But lack of trust has diminished that age long cooperation between the master and his former apprentice, which is very worrisome.

“The main problem of the Igbo today is lack of trust. If we can rebuild the trust among ourselves, our people will be better for it.”

While the former vice president appreciated the efforts of Igbo traders engaged in import business, he advised them to pay more attention to areas that would enhance export, arguing that it was by so doing that they would be in a position to withstand the uncertainties in the foreign exchange trade.

President of Anambra Consensus Project, Dr. Emeka Eze explained that the organization was committed to promoting Igbo ideology, as well as oneness of the Igbo and a unified direction of Igbo growth and development.

EducationAmbode Approves N380m For Bursary, Scholarship by DONSMITH123(op): 4:10pm On Oct 17, 2016
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Monday approved the payment of bursary and local scholarship to Lagos State indigenes in tertiary institutions across the country.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh, told newsmen that the beneficiaries would be fresh applicants and others receiving subsequent payment.

Bank-Olemoh listed the beneficiaries to include 2015/2016 set and other sets receiving second and third payments for years 2013/2014 and 2014/2015.

He said that the state government was committed to sustaining the scholarship and bursary scheme in spite of the economic situation of the country.

He said that the governor is committed to ensuring that indigenes are empowered through education to contribute productively to the local and global economies.

He said, “The timely release of the awards demonstrates the priority the administration of Gov. Ambode accords to educating its citizens.”

Giving a breakdown of the payment, the Executive Secretary of Lagos State Scholarship Board, Mr. Steven Oshinowo, said that the State Government would disburse the sum of N250, 523, 287.99 to 6,368 beneficiaries as bursary award.

Oshinowo also said that N130, 166, 386.56 in local scholarships would be disbursed to 573 successful candidates who took part in the 2015/2016 Local Scholarship Computer- Based Screening Test.

According to him, these sums will accommodate the backlog of outstanding bursary and scholarship payments, as well as current awards for fresh and subsequent beneficiaries.

He said, “We urge beneficiaries to exercise patience as disbursement of the funds will commence in three weeks, at which time beneficiaries will be invited to present relevant documentation to receive their bursary or scholarship awards.”

Earlier this year, over 689 bursary beneficiaries of 2011/2012 set were paid along with 60 students from the School of the Blind and 54 others on Sport Scholarship.

In 2015, the state government also paid N660 million to over 8,567 indigent beneficiaries as bursary and scholarship.

PoliticsWhy Fayose Is Ceaselessly Criticizing Buhari - APC by DONSMITH123(op): 3:42pm On Oct 17, 2016
The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ekiti state has noted that the state governor, Ayodele Fayose, has turned himself into a “lone enemy” of President Muhammadu Buhari, even as it revealed the reason behind Fayose’s unrelenting criticism of the Buhari administration.

Ekiti APC, in a statement issued on Monday in Ado-Ekiti by its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, stated that Fayose is attacking the federal government as a way of having a reason to accuse it of witch-hunt when the governor is made to answer for his alleged infractions on the law.

Before now, the Ekiti governor had explained that his constant attacks on Buhari was based on his sense of responsibility as the most senior governor in Nigeria.

Disagreeing with this position, Ekiti APC said,“It is unfortunate that the governor of a state known for decency and honour could utter such a horrible statement over a very sensitive national issue that borders on the lives of young school girls whose parents have been in agony in the last two years.

“Nigerians know that Fayose is a reckless talkative who plays politics with everything and anything but never in their imagination think he can be so heartless to say the girls were not missing.

Now that the 21 girls were shown live on TV being reunited with their parents in an emotional ceremony, will Fayose still say it was stage-managed?

“Fayose is taking his pound of flesh from the Federal Government for his several infractions on the law over which federal agencies are investigating him and he believes that the best way to blackmail the Federal Government is ceaseless criticism so that he can accuse Buhari of witch-hunt when eventually the law beckons to account for his lawless conducts.”

The state chapter of the party also apologised to the parents of the girls, urging them to take Fayose for “who he is.”

“APC, on behalf of the good people of Ekiti State, wishes to apologise to Nigerians, especially the agonised parents of the Chibok girls, over the insensitive outburst of Governor Fayose.

“Ekiti people are humane, decent and responsible people and the position of Fayose on the matter does not represent the collective position of Ekiti people on the missing Chibok girls.

“It is now crystal clear that Fayose is one of those who misled President Jonathan on the issue of the missing Chibok girls by insisting that the girls were not missing. He is jittery now that all the lies told by the Jonathan administration that the Chibok girls were not missing are exposed.”

BusinessCBN Approves Special Forex Intervention For Airlines by DONSMITH123(op): 5:05pm On Oct 14, 2016
The Central Bank of Nigeria has approved a Special Secondary Market Intervention Retail Sales for airlines operating in the country to enable them to access foreign exchange.

The Deputy Director, Press and Public Affairs, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. James Odaudu, announced the plan in a statement in Abuja on Friday.
Odaudu explained that the intervention was a direct result of the interaction with CBN by the Minister of State, Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, on behalf of the airlines.

He said the intervention was an important one off exercise dedicated to the clearance of the backlog of matured foreign exchange obligations.

Odaudu said the resolution by the apex bank to intervene in the interbank foreign exchange market through forward settlement was expected to engender market confidence.

He said that it would also ensure access to Forex by the airlines to settle their obligations and sustain the integrity of the Nigerian Inter-Bank Foreign Exchange market.

He said, “The import of this peculiar exercise is that the CBN will not apply the relevant provisions under clause 2.4.3 (i) of its Revised Guidelines for the Operation of the Nigerian Inter-Bank Foreign Exchange Market.

“It provides that ‘all SMIS bids shall be submitted to the CBN through the FXPDs.’

“Consequently, CBN shall receive bids from all the authorised dealers.

“The CBN will also not apply the relevant provisions that ‘Spot Forex sold to any particular end-user shall not exceed one per cent of the overall available funds on offer at each SMIS session.’

“According to the CBN, whereas the bids are on Spot Forex basis as the Authorised Dealers’ accounts with the CBN will be debited in full for the naira equivalent of the dollar bid amount.

“The CBN will settle the bids through forward settlements of two months.”

He said that customers that were not willing to accept the settlement terms had been advised not to participate in this Special SMIS- Retail.

Odaudu credited Sirika as describing the special intervention by CBN as a “great relief’’ for airline operators in the country.

He said the operators had complained bitterly over their inability to access the required Foreign Exchange to settle the backlog of their obligations which had adversely affected their operations.

Sirika said the aviation sector was critical to the nation’s economy, adding that CBN had taken the right decision that would strengthen existing airlines and inspire confidence in aspiring operators.

The airline operators at a recent meeting with the minister complained of a lack of access to Forex.

The airlines said that many airlines were not operating profitably.

Sirika, at the meeting promised, to take up the issues with the authorities of the apex bank and seek for intervention on their behalf.

Also to benefit from the intervention is raw materials and machineries for manufacturing companies and agricultural chemicals.

PoliticsSwitzerland, Red Cross, Borno Lawyer Negotiated Release Of Chibok Girls by DONSMITH123(op):
Our correspondents

The government of Switzerland, the Red Cross and a Borno State-based lawyer helped to negotiate the release of the 21 Chibok girls, it has been gathered.

The Swiss government on Thursday said its involvement in the deal to swap Boko Haram terrorists for the release of the 21 Chibok girls was at the instance of the Federal Government.

According to the United Kingdom’s International Business Times, Switzerland conducted the negotiations, which included the International Red Cross Committee between Nigeria and the terrorists leading to the release of the girls.

“At the request of the Nigerian government, Switzerland facilitated contacts between representatives of the Nigerian government and intermediaries of Boko Haram on the release of the Chibok girls,” a spokesman for the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pierre-Alain Eltschinger, told IBTimes.

“Switzerland’s engagement in this operation was guided by the principles of neutrality and non-interference. The role that the Nigerian government has asked Switzerland to play is fulfilled.

“Switzerland welcomes the release of 21 Chibok Girls and calls for the liberation of all the remaining girls as soon as possible.”

The International Committee of the Red Cross also confirmed its participation in the negotiation to release the girls.

“Today we transferred 21 of the Chibok girls and handed them to the Nigerian government authorities, as a neutral intermediary.

“We cannot provide any further comment at this stage in the best interest of the girls concerned,” the ICRC stated on Thursday on its Twitter handle.

CelebritiesI’ll Get Married At The Right Time –Pawpaw by DONSMITH123(op): 10:43am On Oct 14, 2016
Osita Iheme, aka Pawpaw, is one half of the popular Nollywood comic pair known as Aki and Pawpaw. Both men have since moved up the creative ladder, from being just comic actors to making their own movies.

Osita released his fourth movie last April. It is titled Ada my Love. Although most Nigerian filmmakers often shy away from seeing their own works, he is not one of them. Out of the four movies that he has shot so far, the one that appeals most to him is Mr. Limpopo. He is likely to be caught seeing the movie for as many times as possible.

“I simply love that movie. The story is good and the casting is fantastic. I’d love to work on the storyline again and do it in a better way,” he says.

Unlike his alter ego, Aki (Chinedu Ikedieze), whose wife put to bed a couple of weeks ago, Osita is still a bachelor. Asked why he has not followed Aki’s example, the comic actor looks confused and he is speechless for awhile. Then he says, “Marriage is not something that anybody should rush into. I will get married at the right time. When it’s time for me to get married, you will know. You will be informed.”

The actor dismisses the rumour that he is still waiting for the proverbial Miss Right, saying, “There is no Miss Right anywhere. I don’t believe that I should meet Miss Right before I make up my mind about marriage. Besides, there is no wife for anybody. Once you get somebody attached to you, she will become your wife.”

Despite the popularity that he enjoys among millions of movie fans across Nigeria, even beyond the country’s borders, Osita says that he has been publicly embarrassed by the same fans and admirers on some occasions.

Recalling a particular incident, which occurred somewhere in neighbouring Benin Republic, he says, “An excited fan removed my cap and gave me a knock on my head. He said he had been seeing me in the movies and only wanted to confirm if I was really the one. Although I felt quite embarrassed by his behaviour, I let the incident pass because I could see that he acted out of excitement.”

Film acting, he says, did not come by accident.

As a youth, he used to be a member of the drama group in his church. At a point, he had decided to take up acting as a career if given the opportunity.

But, the actor says that he would have liked to be a singer if his dreams had failed to materialise.

“I would have become a singer. To me, singing is a means of expressing myself,” he says.

Osita also takes a look at the impact of the present economic situation on the movie industry and concludes, “It is tough getting by nowadays. This is probably because filmmaking is no longer as lucrative as it used to be. But what else can we do? The recession is affecting everybody and the entire nation.”
