Kamarudeen Ogundele, Benin The Independent National Electoral Commission has taken delivery of sensitive materials ahead of the Sept. 28 governorship election. The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Sam Olumekun, disclosed this to newsmen in Benin on Monday. Our correspondent gathered that the sensitive materials were handed over to the commission amid tight security by the police, Department of State Services and the Nigerian Army. Olumekun said the delivery of sensitive materials from the Central Bank of Nigeria had shown the readiness of the commission to conduct the governorship election. He said the commission would commence distribution later in the day. He said the commission would ensure a transparent election on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has beefed up security around the state. A detachment of soldiers mounted a roadblock about 20m from the Benin-Ore tollgate frisking vehicles coming into the capital city. There were also police vehicles patrolling the streets of Benin. Our correspondent also observed heavy presence of security men and several police checkpoints along Benin-Owo road. Findings from the Oba market revealed that residents had started stocking their homes with food due to the tension generated between the two leading parties – the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party. Update on earlier thread. Incase you missed the gist. https://www.nairaland.com/3369718/ogun-pastor-got-stuck-shrine The Ogun Police Command says it will prosecute a Pentecostal pastor, Wale Fagbere, who allegedly invaded a traditional shrine in Ketu area of Ayetoro in Ogun. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, said on Monday that the cleric would be charged for malicious damage and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace. He said, “What he did was wrong and so he must be charged to court. If it was the other way round too, they will also be charged to court. “Everyone has a right to worship whatever deity one chooses without fear or favour, “he said. Oyeyemi, however, said he could not tell in which court the accused would be arraigned as at press time. Fagbere on Saturday attempted to pull down a traditional shrine in Ketu, Yewa North Local Government Area of the state. But he was reported to have immediately gone numb upon entering the shrine, attracting a crowd to the scene. He, however, regained consciousness after the traditional ruler of the town, Oba Abdulaziz Adelakun, intervened and directed that some some traditional rites be carried out on him. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has demanded a retraction of libellous publications by the Daily Independent newspaper, Omo Bazuaye and Akin Fadeyi over “Change Begins With Me” campaign. The minister made the demand in letters written to the newspaper, Bazuaye and Fadeyi by Falana & Falana’s Chamber, the law firm of a renown civil right activist and lawyer, Femi Falana. The letters dated Sept. 19 and signed by a lawyer Oludare Falana was made available to newsmen in Lagos on Sunday. The first letter addressed to the Executive Editor of newspaper alleged that the libelous statement was published in the Sept. 15 edition of the paper. The law firm stated in the letter that the newspaper claimed in its publication that ”Change Begins With Me Gulps N3.4 billion” and that the concept of the campaign was stolen by the minister. It reads “Having damaged our client’s hard earned reputation by your reckless action, we have his instruction to demand a retraction of your libellous publication within seven days of the receipt of this letter. “Take notice that if you fail or refuse to accede to our client’s demand, we have his instruction to sue you with a view to restoring his reputation which your reckless publication has damaged.” In a joint letter addressed to Bazuaye and Fadeyi, the law firm said that the duo circulated in some online media that the concept of the Change Begins With Me campaign was stolen from them by the minister. The law firm similarly demanded a retraction of the libellous publication within seven days of receipt of the letter or they face legal action.
