Professor Charles Soludo, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has lashed out at former president Goodluck Jonathan for the present state of Nigeria’s economy. Soludo believes that the current woes of the country are as a result of Jonathan’s recklessness as the country’s leader, a situation which he believes can only be salvaged with time. According to New Telegraph, the ex-CBN governor said that the economy nosedived to an unprecedented state during the regime. Soludo made the declaration in Lagos as a guest lecturer at the Realnews Magazine Online’s third anniversary lecture, where he also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to take proactive steps in reviving the economy. After carpeting Jonathan’s administration for plunging the country’s economy into the current mess, the finance expert tasked Buhari to double the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from $550 billion to $1.1 trillion in 12 -16 years’ time. Meanwhile, a former president of the United States, Jimmy Carter does not see the ex-president in that light. He (Carter) believes that Jonathan is the symbol of Africa’s democracy. source: naij.com

The Senate has summoned the Inspector-General of Police Mr Solomon Arase, over the incessant spate of kidnappings in different parts of the country. The Police Boss is to brief the Senate on the steps the Police is taking to address the problem. The upper legislative chamber also resolved to review the extant laws on kidnapping, with the intention of imposing stiffer penalties on culprits. These actions by the Senate followed a motion raised by a Federal Lawmaker, Senator Andy Uba, who drew the attention of the Senate to the prevalent cases of kidnappings in Nigeria. He said that the crime has assumed dangerous dimensions and spreading to virtually all parts of the country. |

The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has announced plans to reduce the salaries of political office holders as a means of reducing the huge overhead costs of state governments in the face of declining fiscal revenue. The chairman of the forum, Abdulaziz Yari, announced the decision on Thursday after a 4-hour meeting at the Presidential Villa. The forum said that it has plans to hold a round-table meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari to find a solution to the economic situation confronting the country. The governors also commended the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for its strict enforcement of the law with regards to the over one trillion naira fine imposed on telecommunications giant, MTN. The NCC had slammed a fine of 1.04 trillion on MTN Nigeria, following overwhelming evidence of non-compliance and disregard to the rules of engagement by the telecom company. The governors said that something must be done to address the revenue constraints confronting the economy, promising their commitment to ensuring that a new roadmap is worked out. ow.ly/URE1o |

The family of Paris terror mastermind
Abdelhamid Abaaoud declared yesterday he
should have been ‘burnt to death’.
In the Moroccan hamlet where his father Omar
was born, they have only just heard of the
massacre he organised, leaving 129 dead.
But their verdict was immediate:
Abaaoud had no rightful place on this
earth. ‘We rejoice the news he is dead.
He deserved it,’ said Sayeed Abaaoud, a
cousin of the killer and a village elder
and patriarch of the clan.
‘I say he should have been burnt to
death, because what he did was not
allowed under Islam or any law.’
The Islamic State killer’s death at the hands of
French anti-terrorist police was confirmed
yesterday.
The 27-year-old was shot in the head by a
sniper then hit by grenades during the raid in
the Parisian suburb of Saint-Denis on
Wednesday. He had to be identified by his
saliva.

The All Progressives Congress (APC)
has described the Peoples Democratic
Party, PDP’s allegation of the party
being behind the attempt on deputy
Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu’s life ,
as an induced hallucination.
The PDP had alleged of a plot to
exterminate the life of deputy Senate
President, Ike Ekweremadu and other
opposition leaders, by the ruling APC.
PDP’s spokesman, Olisa Metuh, who
briefed reporters at the party’s national
secretariat recently, said the lives of key
opposition members had become
endangered.
Reacting to the allegation, however,
acting national publicity secretary of the
APC, Comrade Timi Frank, said it was
unfortunate that the PDP has resorted
to cheap blackmail and was yet to purge
itself of cheap and manipulative
strategies that only helped “escort it to
the doldrums that it is in today”.
Comrade Frank in a statement made
available to newsman in Abuja,
yesterday, said it was bemusing and
canny of the PDP to adopt such cheap
and strange propaganda in its attempt
to taint the change mantra the APC has
sworn to betroth to the nation.
The APC chided the opposition party for
adopting its past known strategy for
cheap political gains knowing fully well
that the APC unlike the PDP, is known
for adherence to the rule of law and
respect for the sanctity of life, noting
that the past 16 years of the PDP’s ruler
ship, saw a honorable minister, Chief
Bola Ige, politicians like Harry Marshall
and Funso Williams assassinated with
no attempt to unravel the mysteries that
surrounded their deaths. leadership.ng/news/476363/ekweremadu-pdp-suffering-from-hallucination-apc |
