Thank you. They are the ones that are actually recommending the black box.

Mimzyy:
Try Admiral.

I will manage the miles religiously. grin

umarwy:
Just take not that if you exceed the 1k they will know and adjust your premium accordingly, + admin charges.

Add your wife on the insurance so both of you can drive the car without fear of breaking the law. Cuz it will cost you more if madam is tempted to drive the car uninsured and get into trouble with the law. …

Also get in mind that you still have to pass the UK driving test both (theory & practicals) before the expiration of your 1yr international drivers license for you to continue driving. If not you will go back to square 1.
Thanks for the advice. Will add and see how it affects the premium.

I won't even wait up to 1 year sef. Once provisional is obtained, it's sharp sharp for all the tests. I understand there is high demand at the moment in even securing instructors to aid with the practical test.

With that blackbox and depending on how your driving is, your insurance premium may increase. So for example, if you overspeed, blackbox will take note of it and tell insurer that you are a "risk" and then insurer could then adjust your premium accordingly.
Thanks, I understand it's a kind of mitigating factor for them giving that one does not yet have UK driving experience.

I'll look for how to avoid it then. Any recommendations on insurers will help. Thank you.

As someone who has recently arrived from Nigeria, I would avoid that black box in your position.
It takes one quite a while to overcome the style of driving we've used all our lives in Naija.
Leave the comparison sites and try the insurance companies one by one to find one that will give you insurance without the black box.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll start shopping one by one then. Any recommendations based on experience ?

Appreciated.
TravelRe: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 2) by DoubleN(m): 8:00pm On Sep 27, 2021
Thanks the response. It's really because of the International 'Experience'. For the black box, no way to avoid it as the cheapest insurer I saw is the one offering that option.

I reduced my project annual mileage from 2K miles to 1K miles and my premium has dropped to around £1,500 thereabout.

Is there an advantage of adding another named driver with an international experience aka my wife?

I am impressed by this country Sha and the way they manage data.. Kai!!

Thanks.

wallg123:
Usually I’d advice people not to buy a car straight away but your case is very different as you’ve got family commitments. Your premium is high am suspecting as a result of your international drivers license.
You just have to pick one of the insurance companies you’ve found because all of them would be of similar price. But try avoid that blackbox if you can because your Naija driving style different from UK.

Morning guys,

What's your advice on buying a car (an MPV) as a fresh entrant and driving with the international drivers license.? Did a cost comparison for insurance on confused.com and got an annual premium of £1900 thereabout plus a blackbox to be installed. Any suggested insurers?

PS. The car is essential because of the convenience of moving kids to school and back (we are 5) and other Waka giving that we can't leave any of them at home most especially as Winter draws near.

Experienced advice appreciated. Thanks.

For reference
Portsmouth86:
Hi there

This is what I did for my husband and his arrival in the UK, just to give a heads up of what you may need to do next smiley

My hubby arrived in the UK on Saturday 13th February

08/02/2016 Council Tax- I informed them as soon as I booked his flight (8th Feb) and advised what date he would be moving to the UK
15/02/2016- Went to the post office to collect BRP (Biometrics residents permit)
15/02/2016- Called Electricity, Southern Water and Portsmouth water and also called National Insurance line made application
16/02/2016- SSE (Electricity issued a bill) this was a PDF online bill I used as proof of address
17/02/2016- Opened NatWest Bank account and registered with GP
18/02/2016- I did my husband a CV and we went to the agencies and registered for work.
18/02/2016- Appointment with Lloyds Bank to open a Joint Savings account.

22/02/2016- FPR recruitment asked hubby to come in for a health and safety test PASSED cheesy
23/02/2016- Hubby started his first job in the UK in a bakery, and is still there smiley (and did SIA security training, now awaiting the licence)
24/02/2016- Applied online for a provisional Licence
02/03/2016- D/L application arrived pre filled, signed returned with BRP card
15/03/2016- BRP returned from DVLA ( I knew a licence is issued as the ref is a DL number smiley
16/03/2016- Provisional Arrived smiley

So in a nutshell:
-Council tax
-Collect BRP
-National Insurance
-Electric company
-Gas company ( if you have)
-Water company (both fresh and waste)

Then once you have a letter from one of the utilities or council tax:
-Bank Account
-GP
-Dentist (my husband hasn't yet registered with one smiley )

useful information:
NI number:
https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number call 0345 600 0643 Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm (make sure you state he has been offered a job but requires a NI number) they will ask why you need one although obvious, however you can actually work for up to 12 weeks without an NI number smiley this is issued now by the jobcentre Plus not DWP

You need to get proof of address before you can open a bank account or register with a GP, so make sure those are the first things, check your billing dates for utilities as you could time it to get a bill the following day, as i called the day before my bill was due to be generated (luckily)

Driving Licence ( international licence can be used for 12 months from entering UK)
https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence

And make sure you file any letters for Joint or single names for your next stage FLR as you need to provide proof of cohabitation smiley

I hope this helps smiley

Some one should please confirm this.

Hello Guys,

Is it true that only family can make Form A payment for another person. i.e they must have the same surname and have letter of guardianships?

Also heard that a company cannot make payment for an individual.

Kindly confirm.

Thanks.

VISA Alert* VISA Alert*VISA Alert*VISA Alert

Grateful to the almighty God who knows the end of a thing before it even begins. The all-knowing and all-sufficient God!

Family of 5.
CAS Issued: 6th of August 2021
Visa Application: 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th of August 2021 (Applied till about 3 am in the morning)
Biometrics: 9th of August 2021 (Walk-in at TLS Ikeja). Got there with my Family by 4 am and left by about 11:30 am.
Main Applicant: Priority
Dependants: Standard.
Main Applicants Passport Collection email 2:23 pm 17th of August 2021, Passport collected 17th of August 2:50 pm.
Dependants Collection email 3:56 pm 1st of September 2021, Passport collected 10 am 2nd of September 2021pm.

Many of those who applied as a family with the main applicant as priority and dependants as standard all got their passports on the same date as the main applicant. However, this was not our case and it was a very long 17 working days. Made several phone calls to UKVI and One Paid email during this period. I suspect the TLS guy in Ikeja didn't do something right as during the biometric he mentioned something about linking our application together. O Well, that's all in the past now.

Also noticed that the main applicant's decision was in Pretoria while the dependants were done in Abu Dhabi.

No Non-Straight Forward email.
No Interview.

Advice
A small tip for those who will be making calls to UKVI based on my own experience. Use Skype for this and load about $10. Calls from Skype to UK numbers is about $0.075. While I noted that using this process, my Debit Card was never charged for any call.

Except your middle name is patience, please do PRIORITY!!!.

We thank God for helping us through this journey and thanks to all the positive contributors on this platform. For those awaiting a decision, your expectation will not be cut short in Jesus Name. Amen!

Kindly share details of the process and the bank used.

Thanks.

fificole:
Remember you can use can still use FORM A for transfers/payments from your Nigerian account while in the UK. Those being sponsored by family do not necessarily need to buy FX from the black market to send to you.

This is not marketing banks, but a cheaper alternative.

- Tuition fee balances (or installments as the case may be) : Paid directly to the school
a. Same documents used for tuition deposits

- Accommodation/maintenance : Paid directly to school/landlord/agent or your account
a. Form A
b. Admission letter
c. Accommodation bill for the month/quarter

I advise you get to know your account officer (a knowledgeable one) or the Operations head in the branch
- Complete an email indemnity
- Request for a few forms (if they allow it)
- Get your internet banking setup and request a transaction token

This also works well for spouses that still have businesses running in Nigeria and get funding in naira.

Simply a suggestion.
For future reference

Again my fellow Nairalanders pls your brother needs attention

1.Should one apply to the preferred university direct or must apply through UCAS?

2. Is a student application for a 40yo with a WAEC level of study possible? Although he has a running registered business and married.
1) Most undergraduate admissions are done through UCAS. However, I advise you visit various school sites and check their processes as some schools still do theirs directly.

2) Yes, it is possible. You can be considered as a 'Matured applicant'.

Go through various school websites and apply.

All the best.

Good day all,

Just so that I am on track, I will be applying as a dependent to join my wife, she schools and lives in Middlesbrough, will 10M naira be okay for POF?
This is more than enough.

What you need is £680 * 9 = £6120.

Which amounts to NGN 3,484,120 using today's Oanda rate. https://www1.oanda.com/currency/converter/

Note that same amount is required if you have kids for each of them.
