PoliticsIPOB: List Of Consular Services UK Can Offer Nnamdi Kanu In Detention by Dovegrey(op): 4:19pm On Jul 28, 2021
The embattled leader of the
Indigenous people of Biafra,
Nnamdi Kanu is a dual citizen
of Nigeria and the United
Kingdom.

Since his re-arrest in June, his
lawyers have reportedly sought
consular assistance from the
United Kingdom in order to
ensure that he is released.
However, there is a lot of
misconception as to the kind of
consular assistance the UK can
give Kanu.

Consular assistance is help and
advice provided by the
diplomatic agents of a country
to citizens of that country who
are living or traveling
overseas.The diplomats may be
honorary consuls, or members
of the country’s diplomatic
service.

POLITICS NIGERIA took a look
at the
official guide for British
Nationals abroad which clearly
stipulates the kind of
assistance that can be rendered
to people in situations like that
of Kanu.

Below is a list of services they
can legally render;

1. Provision of replacement travel documents

2. Advice and support in the
case of an accident, serious
illness, or death

3. Advice and support to victims
of serious crime overseas, and
arranging for next-of-kin to be
informed

4. Visitation contact with
incarcerated nationals

5. Liaison with local police
officials in the case of
nationals abducted or missing
overseas
6. Loans to distressed
travellers

7. Help during crises, such as
civil unrest and natural
disasters

8. Facilitating the overseas
payment of social welfare
benefits

9. Registering citizen births
abroad

10. Providing a list of local
doctors and lawyers for medical
and/or legal issues

11. Supervising their flag
vessels in foreign harbours

Such assistance commonly does
not extend to:

1. Storing luggage or valuables

2. Intervening in commercial
disputes on behalf of their
nationals

3. Providing travel agency,
banking, or postal services

4. Changing Money

5. Translation and Interpreting
services

6. Legal advice or Advocacy

7. Negotiation of special
treatment, bail, or early release
from prison

8. Criminal Investigation

9. Employment Services

PoliticsLagos-ibadan Expressway: FG Diverts Traffic For 72hrs To Fix Flyover Beam by Dovegrey(op): 9:36am On Jul 28, 2021
AGAINST the backdrop of
speculation in some quarters that
the Lagos-Ibadan expressway
would be closed for three months
at Makun-Shagamu, following the
installation of cross beams on the
flyover being constructed at the
spot, the Federal Controller of
Works in Lagos State, Mr.
Olukayode Popoola, yesterday, said
there was no iota of truth in the
rumour.

Debunking the speculation during
inspection at the site of the
flyover, which the Controller said
has attained about 70 per cent
completion, Popoola stated that
there will be a diversion from the
expressway 400 metres inward
and outward Lagos, and not a
closure, as being rumoured.

He said: “The purpose of this
inspection is to check the extent
of the flyover bridges being
constructed on this Lagos-Ibadan
Expressway.

“The contractor will launch this
beam you are seeing on the ground
here at Makun and that will take
us about 72 hours to complete.

“Any vehicle coming from Ibadan
that is approaching Makun at
kilometer 37 plus 100 will now
have to shift to Lagos bound lane
and then after this place, another
400 meters away, he will now come back to his lane originally.

“We are not closing the road. It
is not partial closure and it is not
total closure, motorists will still be
allowed to move but there will be
a diversion, 400 metres away and
400 meters after where we are
working.”

The controller said adequate road
diversion signs had been provided,
promising that there would be a
collaboration between traffic
regulatory and law enforcement
agencies to avert gridlock.

He appealed to motorists to be
lane disciplined and obey all
diversion signs and traffic laws
and assured that there would be
seamless movement on the
highway.

PoliticsNnamdi Kanu: Soldiers Shut Imo Markets by Dovegrey(op): 5:00pm On Jul 27, 2021
Soldiers on Tuesday prevented traders at the Timber and Building Materials markets in Orlu, Imo State, to open for the day’s business.

Most of the traders in the two markets had on Monday refused to open their shops in solidarity with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing terrorism-related charges at the Federal High court in Abuja.

The soldiers, who were manning a checkpoint close to the two big markets in Orlu, barred the traders from opening their shops for any commercial activity.

Our correspondent was told by the traders that the soldiers ordered the gatemen at the entrances of the two big markets not to open the gates.

While the military continued with their stop and search duty in front of the two markets, traders who came as early as 7am met the entrance gates of the two markets under lock and key.

One of the traders told The PUNCH that he was unable to access his shop on Tuesday when he came for the day’s engagement.

The trader, who didn’t want his identity revealed, said, “Yesterday, almost everybody didn’t open for business in solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu. As we came today, soldiers prevented us from opening the two markets. We didn’t even get into the markets because the gates to the building materials and Timber Market were under lock and key. The soldiers told us that we won’t be allowed to open shop till further notice.”

The chairman of markets, Emmanuel Ibegbulem, who confirmed the development to our correspondent in a telephone conversation, said that he was on his way to the state ministry of commerce and industry.

The spokesperson for the 34 Artillery Brigade Command, Obinze Owerri, Babatude Zubiruo, when contacted, said that he was not aware of the development.

PoliticsThe Mugbamugba War – Second Attempt By Yorubas To Regain Control Of Ilorin by Dovegrey(op): 1:52pm On Jul 27, 2021
For better understanding of the
Mugbamugba war, you should
read the true story of how Afonja lost IIorin and its kingship to Fulani people.

After the Fulani Jamma
murdered Are-Ona-Kakanfo
Afonja and seized control of
Ilorin, Abdulsalam, the son of
Shehu Alimi, became the first
Fulani ruler of Ilorin.

Abdulsalam ruled with the title
of Emir and not
Oba which
proved that the Yorubas had
completely lost control of Ilorin,
a Yoruba town, to the Fulanis.

In a bid to restore the control
of Ilorin in the hands of the
Yoruba people, Toyeje, the
Baale of Ogbomoso and the
new Are-Ona-Kakanfo, led an
attack on Ilorin to expel the
Fulanis but failed.

After sometime, between the
months of March and April
when garden egg (Igba) was
ripe for harvest, another
attempt was made by the
Yorubas to chase Fulani people out of IIorin but failed again.

During this period, the whole
land was already devastated by
the previous wars and
consequently there were no
farms for foraging. Ilorin had
also ran out of food, so both
sides had no food to eat than
garden egg (ìgbá) thus the war
was named Mugbamugba.

The Yorubas suffered untold
defeat in the Mugbamugba war.

They did not know how else
they could fight the Fulanis who
were expert horsemen with
potent charms. Monija, the king
of Rabbah and a mercenary
fighting on the side of the
Yorubas, fled to his town
leaving the Yorubas to their
fate.

To crown their victory, the
Fulanis of Ilorin attacked all
towns in the directions of Offa,
Erinle and Igbona. The Olofa of
Offa with Asegbe (his Ilari)
escaped to Ikoyi.
