Even we still had members riding Peugeot, Benz and some other good cars back then, and no one saw them as worldly people. He and his wife were leader in the church. They dare not leave their tv in their sitting room. They knew it’s against deeper life doctrine at that time for members to own a tv (devil’s box). But because they did not agree with the doctrine. They kept their tv in their bedroom for the fear of their church members seeing it in their living room. They and their kids watched it there in peace. Of course, things have changed now. We now see tv inside the Church used for their Monday Bible study instead of the popular projector. The church has actually turned back from outright tv ban. Look. I know deeper life early way of life very well. My own brother one time used to be a secretary to one of the deeper life 36 state overseers. There’s nothing you can tell me. I know what I’m saying. I won’t say more than that

Ok I heard it myself. If members and local pastor were popularly calling tv such name all over, one could maybe say it originated from the top. That’s what deeper lifers and their local assembly pastors used to call tv. Their pastors used to preach against having tv at home and called it devils box. Even pastor Kumuyi asked his church to throw away their tv. Yes that’s what they used to call it in the 80s and early 90s. Most deeper life members started throwing away their TVs. Some did sell it. Stop talking about what you don’t know. You may not be old enough to know this then. Go and ask your older church members. They will confirm my point to you. No single crusade posters used to carry pastor Kumuyi’s picture in those early days. It all just started maybe in mid 2000. The only place you could see pastor Kumuyi’s picture in the 80s or 90s were on the books he published. Not on retreat posters or crusade posters. Only Jesus picture or any other befitting graphic.

I didn’t buy into any wrong narrative about the early days of deeper life. I’m saying what I personally know. Should I shock you again? In the early days of deeper life, if you wore nice expensive cloth, bought state of the art car, the church members would started looking at you and considering you as of the “world”.

Of course things and some doctrines have changed in the church. Your best option is to ask your church elders about the church past way of life instead of arguing what you don’t understand with me.

It’s also an abomination for a deeper life member to own luxurious cars like Mercedes Benz then. They call it trying to look like the world. You only had to drive cars like Volkswagen Beetle. But praise God. Things have changed in the church. Mind you, there’s nothing wrong with pastor Kumuyi being conveyed in a luxury car.

Let me shock you again. In the 80s. You would never see pastor Kumuyi’s picture or any of his pastor’s pictures on church posters. During this period, it was an abomination, an act considered as trying to publicize yourself other than Jesus for pastor Kumuyi’s pictures to be on posters. It had to be Jesus’ picture or no picture. But what do we have on deeper life crusades posters today? Pastor Kumuyi’s picture of course. Having his picture on billboards other than Jesus picture is no more considered a thing of pride.

Only in Nigeria. Everything about Nigeria is upside down. Of course Nigerian bank atm refused to release my card like on two different occasions. On the contrary, during all my years abroad, no foreign atm ever swallowed my card. Another thing to note is that Nigerian atm dispense money before releasing your card.
