Nezan: What most people dont know about Tiv people is that it is almost a taboo for a Tiv man to be a muslim, your family will treat you like an outcast. Tiv people migrated from Central Africa to Nigeria, and do not have any cultural similarity with other northerners. I know because am a Tiv man from Gboko.

the tiv were the last group to migrate to present day nigeria and as such don't really have any cultural affirnity to any group! i think the british realised this fact and didnt know where to place them thats why before amalgamation a part of tiv land was under northern protectorate while the other under southern protectorate. even more difficult for the british was the fact the tivs had no king or chief hence the placing of tivs Under the authority of the neighbouring jukun king.

How do these groups compare in population to Tiv or Akwa Ibom/X-river groups?

Let's put round numbers on these ethnicities.

Are there 10 million Tivs or more like 5 million (keep in mind that the official pop of Nigeria is roughly ~160 million, and also note the officially state population of Benue State..)?

Same with these other groups.

give or take the tivs in nigeria might total about 6million. the ijaws should be in the region of 2.8million. in between apart from those i see on television i've only met about five ijaw people in my life (and believe me i've travelled nigeria). curiously i've come across countless urhobo people.

clearly the 3 largest ethnic groups in Nigeria are (in no order) Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba and Igbo

who gave ijaws the 4th largest tribe? where do you put the nupe-,tiv,ibibio,kanuri who are clearly more than the ijaw?

the ijaws are mostly concentrated in bayelsa with small populations in delta,ondo and rivers. the 2006 census figures for bayelsa was 1.6million.

the tivs are mostly concentrated in benue with populations in nassarawa,taraba,plateau and cross rivers. the 2006 census for tiv areas of benue was 3.2. now if you add 1million each to both groups (to take care of outside populations) you would get 2.6million ijaws and 4.2million tivs

the census figures did not give the ijaw high numbers. ijaw being the 4th largest tribe is just mischief!

consider this, 2006 census figures:

bayelsa(all ijaw)-1.6million people. approximate another 1million for ijaw populations in delta and rivers. you get a total of 2.6million people.

benue (total population)-4.3million.
benue (tiv areas)-3.2million. approximate 1.5million for tiv populations in taraba,nassarawa,plateau and cross rivers(bachave). you get a total of 4.7 million.

so with what magic has ijaw now become 4th largest?
even funnier, who gave them 12million people when the total populations of all ethnic groups in bayelsa,rivers and delta doesn't sum up to 10million

the deputy governor you mentioned under aper aku is actually an igala muslim. this was when the igalas were part of benue.

abubakar tsav you mentioned is a tiv man from vandeikya lga who settled in kano where he embraced islam. his own children are all christians (one works with efcc).

on the issue of minority muslims in katsina ala,gboko oturkpo etc. you can't farther from the truth!. just like you find hausas in all states of the federation so it is you find them in benue!

not to say they are no indigeneous benue muslims,the truth is in tiv land i doubt if you can find up to ten muslim families and up to fifteen muslim families in idoma land (incusive young alhaji)

there have been stories of fulani herdsmen in benue like in oyo,ondo,kwara,ebonyi etc to mention a few.
