IamAnderson:

socialisation makes a dog balanced not less aggressive, I guess what the person meant by "less aggressive" is that your dog won't bark at everything on the road and try to attack people randomly which I think no responsible dog owner would want.
you have a Caucasian Shepherd, keeping a dog like that locked up without socialisation is a huge no because they have the tendency to become reckless and overly aggressive if they haven't been properly trained.
when rex is an adult and you're walking him do you think you'll be able to hold him back if he tries to attack someone randomly on the road?

Roscoe has been going on walks since he was 6-7 weeks old, then I used to take him with me to buy stuff in my street, he has seen all my neighbours and even waited with me to talk to some people during our walks but he has tried to attack every single person that has come over to my compound.
I can walk with him at any time of the day and when I stop to talk to someone he'll sit and wait for me to finish, I even walk with him through street parties and crowded roads, even through traffic without issues, isn't that better than keeping a dog that you cannot leave your house with because of reckless behavior?
he's still as aggressive and territorial as ever but he's more organized and he can read humans better because he has seen people severally, he can tell between a harmless friend and a threat even on the road and he attacks some sketchy people he suspects.
just make sure when you walk him you don't let people play or pet him, just let him stay by your side and follow you around, if you continue like that then you'll sew how less stressful taking him around will be.
if you want a wild animal that you cannot leave your house with that'll just be barking at people in your compound then stop socialisation, if you want a smart dog that can be calm even in noisy or crowded places and you can take anywhere without worrying about random attacks then socialize your pup

Thanks, I just wanted to be reassured. My neighbor owns an unsocialized and unstable dog (gsd)and he takes pride in it cause no one dares enters his compound except he takes the dog to the back of his house and chains her.
So he was like Rex sees alot if people but I keep telling him of socialization but he was like he won't be aggressive and so.

Someone onced asked this question I'm sure IamAnderson the Caucasian expert can answer u.But from my understanding as long as he is security active and conscious there's no problem.Caucasian are aggressive towards strangers and friendly towards family members..Once he detects threat even from your closest friend he'll react

Okay, well Rex is still a puppy and I don't want to expect much but I noticed something he's cool with everyone outside the compound and even with other dogs but my fear is that it shouldn't extend into the compound.
N.b: he's very active barks and charges but doesn't attack(bites) yet.

Good evening everyone, I want to make enquiries on something:

Do you think daily walks makes Caucasians familiarize with people.
Someone said if a Caucasian keeps seeing a particular person even without contact the dog tends to Know the person after a giving period (basically the person said I give Rex the opportunity to see alot of people, so he would probably be less aggressive)

his tail is always erect when he's barking and growling

so far it curls then i feel its not an issue.

IamAnderson:

the tail is supposed to be sickle shaped when the dog is excited or alert.
sometimes the tail falls down if the dog is relaxed.
if his tail isn't like that then he probably has gsd blood in him, I'm not sure sha maybe his own tail isn't as high set as most Caucasians.
I've seen an adult Caucasian with very good quality that had a low set tail even when excited, it didn't mean he wasn't pure bred, it was just how the dog is

The high set tail is UKC standard though, I read that low set tail is a flaw

IamAnderson:

lol true, it's only the people that the dogs live that can testify to the size, pics don't do justice most times especially if you get a bad angle

Exactly, getting them to stay for pictures is something else

Nice.. I would start uploading Sparks pics by Christmas....
Yours has a furier tail.. Infact all Caucasian I've seen both on nairaland and outside has fury and curved tail..
But spark own is less curved and fury it's similar to dat if GSDs he's also six months...

Well I can't say much amount that but UKC standard says it should be high set, Roxy's tail was also low but rises when she's excited but not in the sickle way Rex tail does.

So does spark tail rises when excited?

I got back home today and found out pictures haven’t been doing justice to Rex’s size, HE’S HUGE and he’s only 6 months.

I will be posting his pictures tomorrow(I wasn’t able to snap today cause he was excited to see me and he was all over the place)
Hopefully I will be able to capture his size well enough tomorrow.

okikiosibodu:

Growing up as a child, I used to have a neighbour that owned a rottie. Just a fence separated our buildings. A storey building in my house had a stairs really close to the fence, so as children, my friends and I loved throwing biscuit into the next compound for the dog to eat (we would starve ourselves Nd use our lunch money to buy biscuit for the dog and we derived satisfaction feeding a dog that would probably shred us into pieces if withing range. Wierd right? We never cared)
The dog would leap into the air to eat biscuits thrown at it, and it was fun watching it run in opposite directions as we threw the biscuit in quick successions. The dog never ate anythng from the ground (the ones it missed and fell to the ground)
So your training method is really an efficient one. Kudos to you

Thanks, Roxy loved food so much that she didn’t really care where it came from and if I had applied this training earlier it would have helped. Rex on the other hand is really picky but he’s still undergoing this training just to be careful.

IamAnderson:

are you sure the dosage was correct?
I think you should talk with a vet to find out why she died in case it's something you need to avoid with Rex pls

Alright, I will talk to another vet to ascertain
As for the dosage, I don’t really know
(My vet gives injections for deworming)

omg did someone poison her?
how did that happen?

We don’t know where she ate the poison from, we noticed she hasn’t been eating (unlike her). We called the vet and he came, he kept giving her drip but her tummy was swollen on Sunday (her intestines) she pooped blood and died on Tuesday morning

Hello petlanders,
After much thinking and reflection, I realised that Roxy’s Death is all my fault.
Knowing she loved food, it never occurred to me that we needed to train them on food refusal.
So, right now I’m going to write down steps on how to train your dog on refusing food.

I do hope that this helps a dog lover someday and also opens our eyes to threats our dogs face.

The leave it command

Show your dog a treat in one hand.
Allow him/her to sniff it but firmly command him, “Leave It”
If your dog obeys and stops sniffing it, give him a treat using your other hand. If he shows lack of interest in the food, do the same. That way, he learns that he must learn to control himself.
If your dog tries to grab the food, repeat the command until he listens. If he does, give him some praise and other forms of rewards such as petting or stroking.
Repeat the process until your dog learns. When your dog has learned this initial technique, make the training more challenging.

You may place the food on the grassy part of your garden and then give your pet a moment to sniff the treat. Immediately, put a cover on the treat and tell him, “Leave It”
If he obeys and becomes disinterested with the food on the grass, reward him with a treat using your other hand. If he doesn’t obey, restrain him by putting him on the leash so he gets distracted from the food.
The next time around, toss a treat on the same grassy area and let him sniff it. This time, don’t cover the food but instantly instruct him, “Leave It” If he follows you, come to him and give him a reward.
If he doesn’t follow, repeat the initial step of showing him the food in your hand. Let him learn to obey and reward a good behaviour. Then move on again to the challenging step.

After your dog has learned to obey your “Leave It” command, you may ask help from your neighbours or friends who are willing to help you train your dog. Ask the stranger to toss a chunk of fresh meat or hot dogs in your presence. Give the “Leave It” command before your dog goes to sniff it. Keep doing this with the same neighbour or other strangers until your dog learns not to eat from strangers.

Move on to the next step. This time, let him learn that you’re always on the lookout. How? Let the same person do the tossing of food stuff a few times and every time that happens, be quick to command your pet to “Leave It!”until your dog learns not to eat from strangers. Before your dog can make a move, blurt the command and repeat the process. This way you’re teaching your dog that you’re always watching and he realizes he must always follow. Don’t forget to give rewards that he likes.

Tip #6: Have a Designated Place for Food

Another way to train your pet to refuse food from strangers is by designating a place for his regular chow. You decide a particular place or corner and a bowl for his dog food. Your training should teach him to eat from that same bowl and same spot all the time. Start by placing a treat on an area near his bowl and before he sniffs it, say “Leave It”or “No!” Reward him if he follows. If he doesn’t, stop the training and place some treats in his bowl and let him eat. Then repeat the process of placing food near the bowl and prevent him from sniffing or getting near until he gets the idea.

So sorry for Roxy's death, it's not always an easy thing to control what our dogs eat off the ground. I sincerely hope you and Rex help each other get over this loss.

Thanks, it hasn’t been easy but we will definitely get over it

Roxy is Dead, she died early hours of this morning from food poisoning
We’ve been battling with her life since Thursday and can’t ascertain where she ate the poisoned food from.

Happy weekend guys. Sorry have not been able to update you guys for a while now, have been very busy.
Anyways scisser has been doing fine and he is beginning to bark alot even if he still plays alot with strangers sometimes, I believe he is still a puppy so with time he will be aggressive towards strangers.

He is currently 3 month plus now and he is looking good at his age, even my friends can tell from his current size.
Below is scisser and me playing a little rough play this morning and we later ended it on the bed to relax after the play.
I can tell that he was very excited and he didn't want us to stop but I just have to bcus I have other things to do.

I will try my best to always update you guys on my boy scisser and as for those that game me tips on how to train him well, I say a very big thank you as it was really helpful.

Stay tuned for more updates

You’re welcome, he’s getting bigger

These are the dog owners union association, who have refused to allow the price of puppy to drop. Ask them of price of any breed, the least they will call is N70,000/N80,000, in the name of pedigree. Even mixed, quarter, one-third breed that even look like bingo, they will still tell you the last is N50k

I think the higher you spend on acquiring a dog gives you motivation to care for the dog cause you won’t want your money to burn

Okay thanks...I just feel like he would have been much bigger if he eats more bcus I really don't see him getting big that much even if he is just 3 months and some days but my friends are saying he is very big at his age doh

So it’s not about how much he eats, it’s in his genes

Like I said I have 2 Caucasians, Rex and Roxy.
Rex is a slow picky eater but far bigger than Roxy that is never full.

Just make his food healthy
