Please can anyone help me with Magoosh and ETS study guide or how do i get these materials. Please i need ur help, im planning to write my GRE this November and i haven't started any prep yet please
You mean you want to take GRE in November 2017 and have not started preparation by October? Interesting. To be brutally honest, except you are a savant in Maths and the use of English, you likely won't get your desires scores. You may PM me to get some of the materials you seek.

Getting direct Ph.D is really giving me tough time without any research experience but I have 3 yrs work experience. My area of interest is micro grid or power electronics. My GPA is 4.67/5. Can someone help out please!

GRE to be written by December
How is getting direct PhD giving you a tough time? Going by what you've written here, it seems you've not even applied to any schools yet. So what help do you need?

hello house, please i need advice on my chances of getting a scholarship to study for msc in public health, not yet registered for gre but have a relatively low cgpa of 3.56
My advice: Ace the GRE and prove through your scores that your relatively low GPA may have resulted from other factors other than intellectual vitality. You will have the opportunity to give reasons for your relatively lower GPA in your SOP. Plus, your SOP should be deliberately crafted in a way that your memories will remain indelible on the minds of the admissions committee. If you have volunteered for causes relating to public health or have relevant work experience and also have strong references from people that matter in the field, then your overall profile will even be stronger. In a nutshell, make your overall profile look so great that you relatively low GPA will not matter.

Hi guys,
after one week of focusing on only quant, I've realised that I need serious help. I don't think a tutorial center will help me because they won't focus on just quant, I also don't have time to go during the day, because of my job.

I'm thinking of getting a GRE maths tutor. if there's anyone here who fits the bill, or can make I recommendation, it will be greatly appreciated. please note that I need a personal tutor and not a tuition center because of the flexibility, my budget is also not very high.
my exam date is Nov 19.
RexCheeng has said a lot to address your issue.

I might just add that you would have to be autodidactic to ace the GRE quant. Along the journey, you will make a lot of silly mistakes that will serve as learning points for you.

You said you are working, right? A lot of us also worked full time when we wrote the GRE. You might have to make a lot of personal sacrifices.

Since your exam is 2 months away, you still have room to improve.

If you must be taught, you might as well use the free Magoosh Videos and learn cool tricks from there. Then practice using Manhattan's 5lb.

Good luck!

Thanks but I don't really understand, this the screen shot
Just mail the school to clarify.

That thing doesn't apply to GRE. It looks like TOEFL stuff. It appears they want you to get at least 79 on TOEFL iBT. One can never get 213 on the GRE even if one doesn't attempt any question. The worst one can ever get is 260/340.

You are looking at SIU Carbondale right?

Can you speak more on the PTDF Msc scholarship?
1. Application is usually between Oct- December annually.
2. Application fee = #1000
3. Overseas and Local Scholarships are awarded both for MS and PhD
4. Between 4-6 OSS are awarded per state per year.
5. Studies to be done in fields related to Oil & Gas and Energy
6. Very generous Scholarship
7. You will be take a test and the best 4-6 per state are awarded.
8. You will get other info when the advert for this year comes out.

Dremanuel please drop ur opinion. Thanks.
Chief,
First of all, I recommend that you don't bank on one option like PTDF alone. You would need to fire on many cylinders if you want to proceed quickly.

That said, I don't know deeply about how PTDF's PhD works but I can speak generally. While you may defer the scholarship for a year, if you get it without admission, there may be factors limiting you from changing study plans.

The PhD Scholarship conditions are more stringent in a sense than that of MSc. You will have to face an interview panel with your research proposal before you are awarded the scholarship. And after, you will be made to submit you research plan broken down with timeline. Again, you will be submiting a progress report periodically. In a nutshell, it's more supervised than MSc. And conditions apply.

Scholastica16:
I thought long and hard about it and if I did not see some top 30 schools that had my option for spring I would have been forced to take the same decision as you.

Even if I wait till 2019, CALTECH, MIT and Berkeley will most likely not admit me- PTDF at al. I barely crossed 4.0 in GPA, did not get 335 in GRE and do not feel I have the profile for such schools with respect to chemical engineering MS.

Let me add at this juncture that I am 10 notches more optimistic than the most hopeless optimist you know- but I am not delusional. Even Alawode had to use Environmental Engineering to get into MIT as they did not take him -initially- on his mechanical engineering first choice option. And this is 4.93/5.00, faculty and university best, 8A1s in WAEC, McKinsey before NYSC, 1520/1600 GRE Alawode.

Then I could have considered GAtech but they do not have my option for MS as the thesis option this spring and would only take me next fall if I applied as direct PhD (which PTDF would not fund). Purdue falls somewhat into the same category as above. Northwestern, UCLA and Wisconsin all eliminated themselves one way or the other. Austin, if I remember clearly did not have MS for spring and considered only direct PhDs for chemical engineering against fall of next year again. I am showing you I have been scouring various lists looking for schools.

At this point, let me say I get into College park, USC or Boulder (as all 3 have what I am looking for) this spring instead of trying my hands on UMich or UIUC would I lose too much? I don't think so especially if I have PhD ambitions that could still lead me to those places and beyond. That is one way I am viewing things. The second way is, I believe the thesis-based, rather than the professional masters, gives me more options after graduating as I could still try for that MBA if I don't get a job or opt for a PhD whereas the non-thesis option leaves me with either a job or an MBA. Fin.

I agree that it is a great problem to have and although I hate mentioning names, I had to throw one up there to show that we are about the same set albeit from different schools. I know (not personally though) the BGS of your dept went to Arlington and should be doing a PhD if not working by now. Amiright? grin
Hmmm. You've said it all. You are fortunate to find great programs of your choice taking candidates for Spring. I've searched too but very few options for me except I opt to apply for MEng.

Shocked that you didn't go lag but know Tunde and Izi that way. The former was also rejected by Cambridge and the latter - my classmate (the record BGS in the school at that time with Four point Nine Eight) is truly where you mentioned doing MSc. What that hints is that Nigerian degrees in Engineering may not be well trusted in some spheres.

Scholastica16:
PTDF won't sponsor a PhD app for me. They have their own mechanism for doing that and my scholarship letter reads MS OSS. As for MS, fall is gone bro - painfully. I am eyeing Spring like cyclops. UK to me is a no-no and August of 2018 is almost 1 year away.

Thanks.
Have you seen top schools that admit for Spring 2018 for your desired program?

Would Fall 2018 be too long a wait? Well, it all depends on what your goals and aspirations dictate and your gut feeling. And by all means, that's what I feel people ought to follow.

Personally, given the awesomeness and generosity of the PTDF, I've managed to convince myself coupled with a piece of advise from a senior friend that waiting till Fall 2018 is worth it if I must attend one of the choicest school on the planet. Although Fall 2018 will make it 7 years after finishing BSc but one more year of work experience with the assurance of attending a top school in the coming year can be re-assuring. Yet, I have no intention of pursuing a PhD but an MBA afterwards so my case may be different.

All in all, the kind of "problem" at hand is what many won't mind having . So it's somehow a good one.

Congratulations once again. I also got the scholarship. I applied for petroleum engineering during the application and I already have petroleum engineering admission with Imperial College. But my ATAS will be very late to get (5th October) so it's likely I may not enroll. Now, the problem is I'm a chemical engineer and would prefer to continue in that line. Can I backtrack and say I want to use the scholarship for chemical engineering?
Definitely. It's been done in the past, and it will still be done in the present and the future. The most important thing now is you have the scholarship.

Hearty cheers to you both!
I surmise you guys deferred your fall admission to spring 2018? Perhaps you'll start over and apply for spring/fall2018?
How does it work?
Sadly, my school doesn't defer till Spring. The cohort is for fall only. But I would rather stay on my job for another year than go to a lower-raking school that admits for Spring, especially now that there is an offer that is ready to send you to even MIT. Most top schools don't admit fresh students for Spring semester but it also varies by departments.

Congrats bro !!

I tap into your blessings.

Still awaiting your suggestions
For you to hit Q 162 in Manhattan, it means you could get up to 166 in real GRE, ceteris paribus. Manhattan's quant is a bit tougher than actual GRE and I recommend it for practice. But, Manhattan's Verbal doesn't mimic the actual GRE too well. Yes, they use a lot of fancy words but their RC are not as complex as that of the GRE. That doesn't mean you should abandon Manhattan, you should just know its limitations.

So I recommend using ETS official guide to GRE Verbal and ETS Revised GRE guide. You will see questions of different difficulty levels and are actual past GRE questions. You will learn a lot of strategies from Magoosh guide and Videos too.

You would have to be patient with yourself. GRE is testing skills they expect you to have learned from primary school up till now and not just from last two months. Sadly, we don't learn much of those skills from our schooling especially those of us from Science background. So, identify your weakness in Verbal first - for most people it's the RC, so focus more on practicing that part. Learn how to read very fast without losing meaning. Learn reading by "chunking". Learn to read actively. When you read, take notes - yes! there will be time for it and it helps you read actively. With practice you will get better. These are just General tips I can give now. If you have specific concerns you can ask.

I think @gokuu can also come to your aid; he scored 162 in Verbal.
