You've raised a valid point. Most Nigerian women overseas want to have their cake and eat yours. I thought GRE was the standard exam for scholarships in the US of A, but a friend was advising I write TOEFL another said its important I write both ielts and GRE.... Honestly, you should begin by doing a lot of research by yourself particularly if you’re serious about scholarships.

GRE will be mostly required but either IELTS or TOEFL may be required depending on the school. Many US schools waive IELTS/TOEFL for Nigerians so you could even save some bucks here.

Full disclosure: I’ve never had to submit a language test in the U.S. and I’ve attended 2 top-tier institutions there although I once did the IELTS which expired before I needed it.

If I were you, I’d focus on the GRE. It’s the major test. It lasts for 5 years, and it can carry you very far if you get it right the first time with a solid score. Beyond the conventional grad schools, top b-schools and Law Schools now accept the GRE in lieu of GMAT and LSAT respectively.

IELTS/TOEFL are just language tests which expire in 2 years. I’ve always considered language tests a joke to me as a Nigerian, so by principle I only applied to the schools that waived or didn’t have IELTS/TOEFL requirement for Nigerians, but to each their own. Still, someone who knows what they are doing can pass those tests with less than 2 weeks of prepping, but your will be remiss if you dare try that with GRE. IELTS/TOEFL may also be required if you’re a TA so you wanna do well if you decide to take either of those.

Germany just does not have a strong black anti-racist movement like the USA or UK. But that is changing as more Black Americans are coming in. So by all means, come to Germany if you can, enjoy it, live your life, be happy, but still be aware and know that no matter where you go, being black is an everyday job.

I will also share my experiences as per life at b-school/on campus, and how to thrive as a Nigerian student among other things. First off, I wish to thank everyone who has posted and commented in one capacity or the other on this forum. Without you, this would not have been a reality. I stumbled on this forum by chance and at which time, I knew nothing about the GRE or study abroad. Of course I knew that people do study abroad, but I was not too cognitive of the process and all until I got here and was inspired by the various success stories.

Like my fore fathers here, I registered with B.Y Mafit and that was the singular wise choice I made cos everything revolves around them. I attended the free TOEFL and Free GRE classes. Got the Magoosh account, Kaplan Text, Official Guide and other materials given during lectures and group studies. Took the TOEFL classes for a month and the GRE classes for 6 weeks. Though free, they were very very vigorous. Wrote the TOEFL first. I'll share that experience another time since this is a GRE forum. I scored 110 though (There was a guy at Mafit who scored 115. Couldn't beat that target ). I did not read lots of textbooks. I just used the classes as my main study and did the additional practice recommended by our instructor (Enitan). Since that worked, I decided to use that principle for the GRE and it worked as well.

Wrote my GRE amidst lots of tension. The night before, I could not sleep. God punish tension . Had running stomach on the day of the exam and I started reciting all the psalms I could munster. . Was great though. The group discussions at Mafit helped, as we were fond of dealing with very difficult analytical questions. My advice is that while preparing, do not scratch the surface. Go really really deep. The more complex questions you tackle, the faster it would be to tackle the easier ones. Also, be true and sincere with yourself. For me, after I registered with BY Mafit, I didnt pick a date till I was well into the lectures and knew exactly what time I needed to be fully ready.

At the end, I scored 164 on the verbal and 162 on the quant. I know of a guy at Mafit (Dada) who scored 166 and 158 respectively. I already mailed my school and I was told I have the chances of getting full funding. I have sent other documents to them prior to this.

Once again, thank you all for helping nudge me in the right path. Now lets wait for the final decision on funding and start fasting so the VO will be nice . I sent this to Mafit to post but I guess they didn't so I had to sign up to post it myself. My advice for everyone would be to be focused and have a clear target and pursue it vigorously. Also, set aside everything to focus on this. It means a lot and it could change your life story.

Ok, let me give back to the community who has given me so much info.After barely a month of preparation with interruptions by job interviews ( plus films wey I watch till early this morning),I wrote my GRE today in Abuja after I had to postpone it once(see how money miss ).I had to leave my house early as I did not know the venue and it was worth it because I miss road but later arrived at the venue few minutes to 10. I was still unsettled and I was a little worn out, but man must survive. Inspired by God and threatened by paying another 50k I took the test.The analytical tried to show me pepper but I said even if na to form story I must write something.God really answered my prayer as Quantitative was the next section that means , my test took this pattern QVQVQ.By the break I needed water because I was really thirsty and I also took that opportunity to discuss small. But the break taught me that 10 minutes is really a short period of time.After the break, I started with rigour but later noticed I was flagging, I was getting slower, started to use the onscreen calculator and didn't have time to revise. At the end of the test I just wanted the whole exercise to stop (maybe because I didn't practice a full length test with the power prep software).
However my result came out thus

I was unhappy and disappointed and I feel I messed up because I expected more(when MIT is drawing you wetin you go do na), however in all things I give thanks. But one thing I learnt is to prepare better

I wont like to derail this thread but your claim that any alien with bla bla bla can file for himself is ambiguous and vague, you might need to research more on that, No masters holder on earth can file for himself or herself,its damn hard if not impossible for a masters holder to meet the requirements, check the requirements and evaluate yourself, you might want to stop deceiving yourself. With a masters degree you dont even have requirements to file for yourself,I am sure no masters holder on earth has done this. I know countless Phd holders who have.Just like you said, the burden of approval also lies on USCIS for self petitioning. Sidenote: Trust me, if your goal is to remain in the US, when you get to the US and you see reality of things in some states, nobody will force you to consider phd. In Some courses/specialization you cant even get internships because you keep hearing ''I work for the DOD and you will need clearance to work which I cant go through the stress to get for just on individual''. Power for instance is a specialization in Electrical which most international students find it hard to get jobs because, most companies in that sector need clearance. That is not to say that some students don't end up with jobs but you need to see the reality of things.
Additionally you mentioned athletes and art professionals which I feel is not the point, infact you are missing the point. Are you eligible to file as Akeem Olajuwon? Do you have an olympic/world cup medal? Infact a local footballer in Nigeria cant even file, even though EB1 is extraordinary abilities. The whole point of this discussion is that Phd opportunities outweigh masters opportunities, if you want to stay back in the US. EB1-A is ''one of the categories of first-preference, employment-based immigration, which benefits foreign nationals who have reached the top of their field of endeavor. A foreign national under this classification will not need a labor certification. In addition, all visas are current, so the foreign national does not need to wait for the priority date to become current before he or she can obtain a Green Card after the case is approved. In addition, a job offer is not required under this category''.

Just to add to your points, everybody's destiny is different. What works for A Might not work for B and what works for B might not work for A. And guys need to have it at the back of there minds that less companies are willing to file HIB visa for international students as each day pass by. All these guys you all mentioned are not international students, infact you dont need a masters in American as a citizen to get to the top of your career. What applies to them doesnt not apply to us. A Phd has more opportunities than a masters on the long run. For instance you might finish the Phd and get a job that is not willing to file employment based green cards, as a Phd holder you can file for yourself in the Eb1 and Eb2 category whereas as a masters holder your faith lies solely with your company to file for you. And one out of every 10 companies are ready to even go through that route, thats why you see more people going through the Phd route.

As a matter of fact any alien of Extraordinary abilities can file for Eb1 or Eb2 for him/herself. Maybe you are confusing that with H1B that is tied to employment.

If I have the basketball skills of Akeem Olajunwon even without any degrees, I can file for EB1 or so. And America will give Chimamanda Adichie in a hearbeat if she desires. The burden of proof lies on you for self petitioning irrespective of your degrees.

Nevertheless, a PhD in a field of national interest to America can be more advantageous than MS in self-petitioning.

There are also many MSc and MBA holders that are ostensibly disenchanted with their '6-figure-paying' 9-5 jobs. Some of them are bored with the rote involved in doing some assigned role repeatedly. Others, might feel constrained by the job because they know they are more creative or innovative than their job allows them to be. You must present the positive perks attached to a PhD when you are calling for this introspection.

There are certain IOCs and fortune 500 companies that will not employ you as an international student if you are not in a PhD program or a graduate of one. I, for one, know Shell is one of such companies and that T-something guy hinted at the fact that his company (another IOC with the 5th letter "N" ) will not admit you into his department if you do not have one.

A PhD in the US, is not just relegated to Academia as it is in some other countries. In fact, word is that having one places you in a higher salary bracket than even MBA holders when positioned in the same job function. It will be equitable to let 4Gunners know the flip side of the coin you just tossed at him.

I sincerely believe that PhD is a wonderful thing highly academically and research motivated people should pursue.

Nevertheless, one doesn't need a PhD to secure a patent. Thomas Edison didn't have degrees. And some graduate applicants already have patents before graduate schools. Also one doesn't need a PhD to contribute new things to a field.

Elon Musk dropped out of PhD at Stanford after just two days to focus on his personal business. Today he is making rocket science a child's play with just a Bachelor's in Physics. Same as the Google guys who quit PhD. This is not to discourage PhD hopefuls but to praise them - they are courageous folks!

I think the argument of EZEIGBO...was to bring to the fore a fact that a seemingly confused man who doesn't know whether to do a MSc or PhD may never have considered, notwithstanding a huge potential for funding if a PhD is pursued.

A person who is not fully convinced about PhD and ends up struggling or frustrated or dropping out after many years incurs a huge opportunity cost.
Same applies to anyone who is in a profession he doesn't have passion in and ends up frustrated.

Lastly, I believe one may have more degrees than a thermometer but that doesn't guarantee success in life. The ability to imagine and create and solve human problems with or without degrees is omnipotent. Thus a degree should be a means to an end and not an end in itself.

the bolded requires deep introspection, far too many graduate students (PhD) are miserable human beings. are you ready to spend 5-7 years working ~80 hours per week on a some dissertation, knowing that engineers out ther even your fellow immigrant are making 6 figures comfortably while you slave away in some research lab, are you ready to be frustrated by your own work, and having it rejected from top journals and/or conferences even when you have worked long enough on it. I suggest you read PhD grind by phillip guo(it's free) and see what the life of a normal PhD resembles. if all that scares you then jejely go for an MsC.

This is one of the most outstanding posts I've read here in a while. You couldn't have said it any better. That has always been my stance when I hear people contemplating PhD.

So I took the GRE 28th of last month here in PH.
Results summary:
Verbal: 157
Quant: 160
AWA: 4

Shockingly, I scored exactly 317 on my second powerprep test 3 days to my test date. I was only able to increase my score by 7 points from my first diagnostic test. Anyway, it was only God who helped me pull through because after totally breaking down for two weeks and getting better two weeks to test date, I discovered that I've lost some things. I just couldn't answer some question types like inferences and logic. Hmm! Including mixing up some subtle maths concepts. OK... What did I do? I gave up on relearning anything. I made a decision to work on my speed and tested that with the 2nd powerprep test. In the end, I scored 156 in verbal and 161 in Quant. While reviewing, I found out that most of my first gueses that I changed in the verbal were actually right (but I always have the challenge and fell for three trap in the actual test). In the quant I got all 20 questions right in the first session and 15/20 in the 2nd.
I had a funny run down to the test.

But my advice...
1. Please try as much as possible to eat something (my first mistake)
2. Take any medication you have to take for any challenge or pains (I went with my drugs but couldn't take them cos of doctor's warning not to take the medication without food)
3. Get as much water (I had finished 2 sachet and almost 1 Eva bottle before check in. Had to beg them to let me go outside the gate to get more water)
4. Pray it doesn't rain all day... Lol
5. Try to be as fast as possible. I was able to go through and review all my verbal answers with speed. I had 3 quant sessions. In two of them, I had 5 and 3 mins left respectively to review my responses and I was sure of not failing more than 1-2 questions per session. For one of the quant sessions, my time expired just before I will submit the answer to number 20 so no time to even review the questions I marked.
Finally, village people almost entered the hall but God pass them. I was noticeably the only one with challenges. Back pains and general body weakness that I'll always rest flat on the desk every second I had to rest before and during the test. My system froze like 4 times during my last two quant sessions. The system was restarted, I was logged back on and the next time it will freeze the screen displayed an Error message so they had to assign a new system.
But when I saw my final scores I was just laughing and smiling. God pass them.

Anyway....

Congratulations on your scores.

I just wish to make few suggestions, and I'm assuming you are applying for fall 2018.

My first take is that your "Why" has to be very strong, and that will take care of the "Who", "Where" and "When". That means you would know the exact thing you want to research on or focus on in your field, and the potential professors or departments/schools that can deliver that. Then you can create a shortlist. Any school, however prestigious it may be, that won't address your "Why" can always be struck off. But you will have to sit put and do a lot of personal research.

Once you've identified potential supervisors or schools, then your next step is to introduce yourself to them. You would have to tell a great story here based on your "Why" and your work/academic history. If you make a good impression, they will respond to you and will usually tell you if they have funding or not and other avenues you can explore. If a professor doesn't respond even after you follow up with your mail, that's a sign that you are not likely needed by the professor. You either move to the next professor of interest in the school or next school on your list. Note: However stellar your grades are, if there are no professors willing to take you on in a school, you are most likely wasting your money and time applying. And a corollary to this is that the question of whether a school is ambitious or not would be answered. Personally, almost all the schools that gave me admissions with financial aids had their professors respond favourably to me. On one occasion, one opened up that I was one of his picks. One another occasion - though I didn't apply eventually - the professor encouraged me to apply and while he said he won't make promises, he felt I would be competitive for funding based on the info I supplied to him in my introductory mail. I could go on...

Based on the responses you've gotten from above, you can narrow your list further to the schools you should apply to. Those are the ones you should really focus on. Others can follow.

In a nutshell, put in the hard work to research many schools based on your program, and reach out to potential supervisors, other things can follow.

GRE is next tomorrow. I have taken a good number of full length practice tests. 3 marks short of my target composite score is d best I have achieved. Powerprep scores are 5-7 marks below the target scores. While the verbal is improving with RC my major problem is silly mistakes I make in Quantitative Reasoning. After doing the hard part of breaking problems down I just blow it by making mistakes like leaving out - negative sign or something. I am just kinda not comfortable.

Tbh, there is nothing much you can do at this point to improve your scores considerably. However, you should be careful not to do things that can hurt your confidence thereby making your scores suffer.

At this point, you should be reviewing your notes and the GRE Math conventions, your vocabs, and I don't expect you to be doing any practice tests at this point. You would want to get a very sound sleep tonight and face the test tomorrow with a solid determination.

You must have prepared so hard and whatever scores you've been having in the past practice tests do not count - what counts is what you do tomorrow.

In short, do not worry, stay focused, map out a strategy for tomorrow, review where you are prone to silly mistakes, get snacks to eat in between the test breaks, go to the test centre early, and tackle the test heads on. All the best!
