Like I mentioned, I agree with every other thing you said except the student loan part, and I commented because I thought someone else might benefit from a different perspective, but I think you simply want us to agree with everything you post. So, please kindly delete the areas where you mentioned me so that my posts can disappear completely and I'll delete this one too.

Let me add my take on the student loan a bit. Depending on your credit score, age, test scores, program or school, you can get a decent student loan. Student loans can be paid up to 20 years. Interest rate can be something like 7.5%. For comps, average S&P returns is 9.8%. That means loan makers are better off buying index funds than issuing loans. I guess that’s why most firms who issue student loans are into impact investing.

So, think about what you make without education compared with having an education. They are light years apart. Do the cost benefit analysis. I won’t do the math here, but you can be better off. The only caveat is that; choose a profitable program. Think long term. As an international student, don’t take student loans to study courses like Social Work as your American counterparts sometimes do.

Do you have a mechanism of picking your stocks for short term plays?

I'm planning on making some short term plays with penny stocks but want to do my due diligence first.

I'm mostly buying on market order, but with time I'll become used to limit order, stop-loss order.

Taking it gradually one at a time so as not to confuse myself.

I use S&P Capital IQ (because I have free access to it), Yahoo Finance, Simply Wall St, and finviz (especially for charts) to get info.

What I’m looking for are high volume, price, moderate price-earnings multiple, positive insider transactions (could signal the true value of the stock), the chart patterns to spot resistance and support in order to guess the price to enter or sell via limit order, etc.

Finviz really helps to screen based on some criteria. With time I’d subscribe to gold membership on Robinhood to have access to level II data. I have a Fidelity account too, although I haven’t used them to trade, but they have more good info.

I would love to hear the thoughts of experienced traders in the house on this.

I haven't traded stocks before so I invested $2000

Then I bought 25 shares of American Airlines, 25 shares of United Airlines, 25 shares of Delta Airlines & 25 shares of Southwest Airlines.

Do you think these are good stock?

I'm planning to hold long term till at least December.

If travel resumes then the stocks will fly.

What about Bankruptcy?
Can all four airlines go bankrupt as the same time?

I feel like all four airlines are too big to fail and the government will bail them out before the go bankrupt

What do you think about hotel stocks like Marriot?

I'm also planning on investing in that sector long term but just wanted a different opinion.

I'm a rookie myself but I bought 20 shares of Delta today. Given your investment horizon, I think they are good picks.

However, I think the portfolio is not diversified enough given that risks are correlated because they are in the same industry. Nevertheless, some of those stocks are undervalued because the EPS multiples are relatively low compared with the market, so I think you may have gotten them at a bargain. So, If I want to invest further, I would look at another industry especially those blue-chip companies with undervalued stocks.

I gambled on ACB on Friday and cashed out this morning with a yield of ~40%. Tbh that stock is way overpriced, but I'm looking for similar opportunities to trade within a day and take away my "loot" but I'm learning to be patient because I lost money on SRNE, but I'm glad I cut my losses before it became really bad.

I'm using robinhood and might switch to more sophisticated brokers as I gain experience but I encourage you to learn how to use a limit order, stop-loss order, market order, etc. Also, watch out for frequent trading so as not to be categorized as a Pattern Day Trader. I almost made a mistake there.

Again, I'm still a rookie, I'm only using my knowledge of finance plus a limited knowledge of the market, so take my submission with a grain of salt.

You can short Zoom (ZM) from the Robinhood app by trading options. You can buy puts or sell calls. I know most brokers will ask if you are an experienced investor while opening an account, based on your response they will either allow or deny you access to certain products such as margin and options trading. Try contacting them to grant you access, if they say you don't have much experience, just keep trading stocks on their platform for now. You can now proceed to opening an account with TD Ameritrade, but make sure you don't select you are a new investor. TD Ameritrade charges $0.65 per option contract.

But honestly, read and watch instructional videos about options trading. It is very very risky and one of the fastest ways to lose money. TD Ameritrade has a paper account if you want to practice strategies first before actually trading a live account. I know Zoom (ZM) is overvalued, but investors are piling into covid winner stocks so it may go against you. Worst of all, shorting this thing is too damn expensive and if the stock keeps rising, you can lose 100% of your money in a blink of an eye.

I find this very informative. Thanks so much. I just joined Robinhood and I've made my first trade. I've downloaded TD Ameritrade but haven't registered. Now I know that I have to say that I'm an "experienced trader" just to have access to more trading options.

What do you guys think about shorting Zoom (ZM)? I think the stock might be overpriced since it's COVID that's really fuelling its upswing in cash flows. Robinhood doesn't allow shorting, does any one have an idea of the right platform to short?

Honestly, the ball is in your court since I don't know your risk tolerance.

However, it seems you've not even applied to the school you are referring to talkless of an offer of admission. It's the content of your offer letter that should inform your decision making. That's why it's the best practice to edge one's bet by applying to a couple schools so you may have options and even negotiate with schools if you have a leverage.

She replied: "The program will allow you to conduct research and assist in the classroom without compensation."

Although, It is clearly written on the department website that:

"If awarded an assistantship, a graduate student will receive a 1/3-time appointment of $16,000/year (M.S.) or $20,000/year (Ph.D.). The assistantship will cover in-state and out-of-state tuition. However, students must pay non-matriculation fees".

Please, I still don't understand the above statements. I need your contributions and opinions.

Generally, it's the professors that hire Ph.D. students into their labs, and students then function as an assistant. In many cases, tuition would be waived and the professor will pay stipends (from his grant money). I would spend most of my time getting to know professors in the program I'm targetting and try to get them to bring me on board. There are also cases where the program also hire TAs or GAs and they should waive tuition and pay stipends. However, there are some programs where tuition waivers are impossible (but they are generally professional programs).

To the response you received, I think it was too generic. My take on that is that even if someone doesn't receive an official assistantship, they can still be allowed to conduct research.

I think schools will resume in the Fall no matter what happens. At the least, lectures would be online.

In the last quarter, international students that didn’t make it back to the US before border closure didn’t violate their their F1 Status. By the same token it’s possible that incoming students can remain in their countries and be duly enrolled in a US school. I would check with the International Students and Scholars Office tho.

I had the same opinion and people argue this with me. I believe the Covid-19 is not deadly as painted by the media. We have to learn to live with it because its not going soon or anytime. We cant continue to close down countries for months. People will die of hunger than of the virus.

Self-isolation and Quarantine should be for the vulnerables. I am currently scrapping some datas online. I want to see the age range of the majority of people that died of the virus.

As per underreporting in Africa, I don’t think there are any incentives to do so. My guess would be that we’re not testing enough. It’s possible the weather is helping a bit to limit the spread. I think one advantage Africa has is the young demography. It’s interesting that Lagos with population that’s 3x the size of New York still has an extremely low Mortality and Morbidity from Covid. This could really mean that something is in Nigeria’s favor but I don’t know for sure what it is.

That’s a good question.

My reasons are fairly straightforward. Most of the job opportunities I had in the course of my engineering master’s were at the entry level but I wanted to begin my career at the middle-management cadre in the US given the years of experience I had back in Nigeria. Thus I realized that an MBA would easily pave that way for me.

Furthermore, I wanted a less technical role and more of strategy/ business development. MBA offers the opportunity to pivot. In fact, one of my friends moved from a teaching career to investment banking and another into consulting. An MBA offered them such possibility.

Finally, I wanted a network I could leverage for my mid and long term goals. I didn’t have that through my engineering degree.

People have different reasons but those were mine. On a shallow level, post-MBA pay was attractive to me too!

Dr Fauci believes that since many are recovering from CoVid 19, it won’t be that difficult to get a vaccine for it.

However, the timeframe is what’s important to governments, business leaders and even the households.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s sustainable to continue the lockdown in the developed world. Developing countries like Nigeria shouldn’t have been locked down to begin with but borders be should partially closed.

Most of the cases are mild. The person whom I share an apartment had the disease and recovered without any real medication. I might have had it too without knowing but tested -ve when they eventually tested me.

Covid19 is deadly but it’s overrated in my opinion. They should let us go back to our classrooms in the Fall and let businesses open. Those that are high risk should self-isolate. I’m tired of the liberal media that won’t stop stoking fears.

Aim for 340 in GRE. If you don't reach your goal you may fall to 330, and that may be alright for your goal.

I agree with your line of reasoning.

This is really scary but I still think there is hope. I still maintain that there is no country in the world that can beat the U.S. in terms of post-studies job opportunities. Trump will come and go, so I would think long term prospects in my decision making. The role international students play in reasearch, development and innovation in the U.S. are well-documented. So, my guess is that DT may not completely ban OPT, CPT and H1B completely but he may radically restrict it. I think the US would have taken a page from UK's book by now.

Indians and Chinese students currently bear the brunt because they are overreprented, but if DT makes good his promise of implementing a point system like Canada, Indians may come up on top, but I can't say the same for China due to the current anti-Chinese rhetorics.

I think PhD students may be safe because the last time I checked, they are not taking any jobs away from Americans. CS/ECE majors are also heavily in demand by the tech giants and start-ups alike and U.S. citizens/PR alone can't fill those jobs. Manufacturing companies operating in rural areas too frequently need international students since young Americans are too picky to live there so other Engineering graduate students may still be needed.

Based on my observation, most of the jobs that are lost now due tho COVID are not the typical jobs F-1 students typically have. So, Trump is only playing politics to rally his base. Notwithstanding, I know a few people that have been laid off, and some whose internship offers have been rescinded. I know one or two who took pay cuts. I know a few who are still searching for employment. Darn it, I have a friend who recently got a job on Wall St., during this COVID. Yeah, you may argue he got the job because the OPT policy has not been changed but this points out that top companies still desire international students even in time of crisis and uncertainty, and they may be willing to lobby to ensure that international students are still allowed to work in the U.S. post studies.

While I can't predict how challenging or easy it would be for those currently in Nigeria to make it to the US, if I were to come at this point, I would ensure that I'm coming for programs with high job placement rates for international students, and have other solid back up plans. Before COVID, employment for international students was competitive, and post-COVID, it might even be more duanting.

The difference is like night and day in some cases, almost to the point of boring since the gals married to whitemen rarely have real complaints for me to listen to..

Even in your response, you're elating WM as pure, perfect, respectful, and chivalrous. Isn't it funny how you described the "white boy/black girl relationship or marriage" as "winning"? Let's cut the crap, BW have different standards for BM, but that's none of my business because I don't give a flying fck who they date or don't date. Again, not all non-racist WM are respectful. In fact, they feel the most entitled because they are arguably the most desired (every race wants them and they know it). Side note, most things Yte boys do that BW may consider sweet and chivalrous, but if a BM does the same thing, they could consider him weak and lame. You can't just win. It's common with AA women tho but a few Nigerian women act that way too.

In one of the schools that I attended, I saw how "our" single "sisters", especially the attractive ones, change tone when they are talking to Yte boyz. In fact, I've seen how a few of them didn't like to talk to fellow African students that are male (they acted like though you're subpar) but these were the same girls drooling over yte boyz who often dog them, and toss them around. The Nigerian men that I know may not be perfect but they are not that snobbish. Nigerian women that are more relatable are those that are married, "old" and are under pressure to settle down, in a relationship, or not too blessed with looks.

We may be viewing this issue from different lenses because I don't know the social class of the Nigerian women and men you're talking about, but most men in my circle are professionals in no need of anyone's paper, looking to build with someone and not to tear anyone down or subjugate them. So I won't be too critical of your perspective.

I don't "own" Nigerian women or BW, and they don't "own" me too. Let everyone date or marry whoever makes them happy, and let no one question them for their choice.
