PoliticsRe: Lagos State Recalls All Sacked Doctors by drhappy(m): 6:45am On Jun 01, 2012
Nigerians never cease to amaze me.It is very obvious now that all those propaganda about not signing any agreement, doctors begging for jobs back, private hospitals offering free medical services and employment of over 300 doctors are lies and deception from the pit of hell.It is only those that are helplessly ignorant that can fall for such a hoax.LASG should be "urged" to quickly commence the FULL implementation of CONMESS, followed by the speedy payment of arrears for ALL the months and years they have been foot dragging and playing games to avoid the needful. Lagos State patients are no lesser than patients in other states and hospitals where CONMESS is being paid, and Lagos State-employed doctors are no lesser than doctors elsewhere in Nigeria. The "conversion" of "sack" to "suspension" is a symptom of delusion of grandeur, arrogance of power, shying away from responsible behavior, from a government whose rascally even crude animalistic behaviour threw up the unfortunate ingredients and environment for which only a strike could draw attention to and resolve. Fela (prophetic, once again, even in a 'civilian' dispensation) said: "animal cannot 'dash' me my human right"! Lagos doctors must remain resolute in seeing this matter to a logical conclusion, which is justice to all our colleagues in Lagos, with a clear message to all other delinquent states on the implications of not paying CONMESS which is the minimum wage for doctors in Nigeria.
I do hope no doctor will swallow this bait of regularizing their status with the HSC, neither should there be a resumption of duties until the demands are met, including a written assurance that NO ONE should be victimized for taking part in te strike. Indeed, we must show that "disobedience against tyranny is obedience to God"!
Medical professionals must show the way in bringing back responsible governance to Nigeria.
Congrats to all Lagos doctors for remaining steadfast.

About 60,000 Nigerians are registered doctors, 15,000 are dead or no longer practising for one reason or the other. Of the remaining 45,000, a third to half of this are abroad leaving just over 20,000 in the country. This over 20,000 includes doctors in the ministries who by the real sense are not seriously involved in clinical duties.

Barack Obama pushed for health reforms in the USA recently. USA has approximately one million doctors and 30,000 of these are of Nigerian origin (either through emigration or by nationality i.e. born there). Now Obama wants to increase this figure and he is aiming to get 30,000 more doctors from Africa. As you all know, one in every five African is a Nigerian, so in effect of the possible 30,000 doctors he hopes to recruit from Africa at least 6,000 will be Nigerians thereby depleting the number of doctors available to Nigerians.

Cuba an island of 12 million people has 70,000 doctors i.e. ratio of 1 doctor to 170 Cubans.

Can someone help pass this to Fashola please? So that he can appreciate the damage he is about to cause to the health sector.

Welcome to Nigeria, the land of my birth......We dialogue and negotiate with terrorists and militants and honour agreements with same, spend massively on 60th birthday celebrations but sack our doctors for asking for an additional sum of 20K to their salaries. The most unfortunate aspect is that Nigerians cannot even hold their leaders accountable.I hope the information below helps the cynics in the house:

PRESS STATEMENT ISSUED ON MONDAY, MAY 21, 2012, BY THE NIGERIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (NMA)
ON THE FALSE HOOD DISSEMINATED THROUGH THE VANGUARD NEWSPAPER

The attention of the national body of the Nigerian Medical Association has been drawn to the Monday, May 21, 2012 publication of the Vanguard Newspaper wherein on page 6 under the caption ‘’
Sacked Lagos doctors lobby for reinstatement’’, it was stated that ‘’Even the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, National President is not happy with position of the Medical Guild on the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, CONMESS, issue but he is afraid that he might be impeached if he fails to dance to the tune of the doctors. I had a meeting with him last Thursday when he confided in me,’’ the source said.
The Nigerian Medical Association wishes to unequivocally state that
at no time did the President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, make such a statement as reported in the said Vanguard publication, either privately or publicly. Indeed, to think that the NMA President who was overwhelmingly elected only 17days ago (and who has severally advised the Lagos state government to reverse her sack of 788 doctors), would be bothered about impeachment over his courageous and progressive handling of the Lagos quagmire, is ridiculous and ludicrous. The NMA President has an unblemished track record as a progressive crusader for social justice.
Nigerians and indeed the whole world are very much aware that for over a week the NMA President and the national leadership of the NMA have consistently made efforts to resolve the labour crisis in Lagos state, despite the hard line anti-labour posture of the Lagos state government.
The Nigerian Medical Association therefore considers this Vanguard Newspaper publication/write up as scurrilous, outright falsehood and a desperate attempt to blackmail the President and leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association in her quest for a just and quick resolution of the face-off between her members in the Medical Guild and the Lagos state government.
While we accord respect to Vanguard Newspapers, we are however extremely saddened by the fact that her correspondents, Sola Ogundipe and Chioma Obinna, lent themselves cheaply to such a wicked act of blackmail and yellow journalism without cross-checking with the President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, whose phone numbers they have.
We wish to request a formal apology and retraction by Vanguard Newspapers of the statement falsely credited to the President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, within one week from the date of publication of this press statement.
We thank members of the public for their vigilance and understanding, and advise them to discountenance the Vanguard publication and stand on the side of justice.
Thanks and God bless.

Dr. Osahon Enabulele
President

Dr. A.L. Pemu
Secretary General

Lemme answer your question with another one.Is it necessary to go to the university if you want to be a medical doctor?
AutosRe: The Hidden Truth About Air Bags In Nigerian Cars by drhappy(m): 5:39pm On Feb 20, 2012
Some of the assertions are not absolutely correct. You can know if your airbags are intact at any given point in time. When you switch on your engine, the airbag's indicator light flickers temporarily and goes off just like the engine's indicator light.

HealthRe: Must A Chief Medical Director or Health Minister Be A Doctor? by drhappy(m): 1:49pm On Nov 09, 2011
medical doctors hav led our health sector over the years and guess wot they achieved? Bottom table ratings in d world health care chart!
As much as i know, there is a hospital management course in other countries. In a country where even trained proffesional management personal fail in proper management of institutions due to nigerian factors, doctors who have little or no exposure to management trainings shouldnt be left in totally in charge.
I think we need a serious selfless review of our health system to achieve and help our people. All that matter to our doctors is to sit tops n demand bumper salaries at intervals from govt, while they expect worship praise from d average low esteem and ignorant nigerian.
Their mates abroad are researchn and moving on,forming research teams with every other colleague in the healthcare field, even outsider lyk engineers to enhance medicine, but here, a first degree physician in orthodox 1985 medicine knowledge walks around the hospital and thinks about how he wil ride his health colleagues he shud be working with, jst to show a baseless superiority.
Maybe one day we wud get to seperate the hospital depts into differently located health units just to achieve selfish desires.
I pity 4 our health system and our so called 'doctors'
You have actually exposed your ignorance with your submission as quoted above. That the health sector is comatose is not the doings of doctors but as an extension of system failure in Nigeria. How many doctors have headed PHCN, Water Corporation, Nigerian Railway and Ministry of Works? Are those parastatals in top shape?
The so-called feat-performing doctors abroad comprise a large chunk of doctors who are native of this country but are fortunate to find themselves in environments where there is high regard for human lives. We hear that government releases fund for researches in teaching hospitals but nobody has seen the money.Apart from the hospitals, ASUU also complains about this regularly.
For your information,a CMD is a Consultant Specialist in his field who must have at least a minimum of 15years experience in that capacity. You do not become a Consultant after studying for 6years for the first medical degree but after spending at least another 5-8years to specialize depending on the specialty to bag a Fellowship degree. So to become a Specialist you must have been in training for about 11-14years.You can now add another 15 years to that before you can aspire to be a CMD.At that level and time you are even almost likely to be a Professor.
During the period of specialization, you are expected to undergo an intensive Health Management Training and Research Methods which are prerequisites for sitting for the Fellowship exams. So who says doctors do not have managerial skills to enable them head hospitals?
We are in the Evidence Based Era and it is so shocking that someone as literate but not educated like Aribisala can say there can be hospital without doctors. If there are modern therapies for some chronic diseases, then what is the modern therapies for a ruptured appendix,a depressed skull fracture or an obstructed gut?
There is no basis for this mischievous post because the answer is obvious.Pharmacists should be contented with their supportive role in hospitals instead of embarking on campaign of calumny against doctors. A word they say is enough for even fools now,

Must a jugde be a lawyer? Why can't other paralegal professionals aspire to become a jugde. Why can't the accountant general or auditor general be a medical doctor. How can a pharmacist be a medical director? We are talking about people that don't even attend ward round in a hospital? What do they know about laboratory? To put it correctly, doctors are the only health professionals that do postings in every medical field while in school. From pharmacology to pathology to microbiology to medicine to surgery. There is no aspect of medicine that doctors didn't touch. A doctor can effectively man the laboratory wtot any problem infact doctors can specialise in lab medicine. They can specialise in pharmacology. They know a bit about every aspect of hospital section if not more especially wen they specialise in that field. Worldwide a doctor is the head of any medical team according to WHO. Even if the doctor qualified yesterday and the pharmacist has been qualified for donkey years if they find themselves together as a team in any medical mission the doctor is the head. Even NYSC camp doctors head the clinic. If you want to head medical team go to medical school and stop looking for cheap blackmail on a forum
God bless you helpee.During the last failed strike embarked upon by the Lab Technicians nationwide over their desire not to be under doctors, most Teaching hospital functioned maximally as doctors were mobilized to the laboratories to fill in the gap.I personally ran the automated machine in the blood bank of my centre for Full Blood Count and Grouping and Cross matching of blood for emergency cases.Infact, there is a court case in Kogi state now because when these irresponsible people realized that their strike did not paralyze the hospital as intended, they assaulted the doctors working in the lab and policemen were called into the centre.
In the history of medical practice, doctors were the ones carrying out all these investigations in the side labs of hospital but to lessen the job burden for professionalism, lab technicians were trained to man the labs and now they want to take over.

@OP:It is very funny that you want people's opinions from this thread despite your already prejudiced and myopic view point to the extent that you even used abusive, uncouth and irresponsible languages against opinions that are contrary to your jaundiced view.I thought you need opinions and not impose your own.
There is no place for comparison here as stated by reasonable and unbiased Nigerians. For your information, doctors have maintained dignified mutism for so long despite barrages of orchestrated attacks from paramedics because an Albino does not need to announce his/her presence in the market place and because we are too busy saving lives to be struggling for supremacy in the health sector but things are going to change and you shall go back and bury your head in shame. It is unfortunate that we have a 'government of anything goes' in Nigeria and the society is so lawless.I think the question you should ask yourself is 'What is the global best practice over this matter?'
If you want to head hospitals, please write JAMB that you failed earlier again and go to medical school.
