The Petroleum Technology Development Fund, PTDF, on Monday inducted 217 beneficiaries of its 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 Masters of Science, MSc, and Doctor of Philosophy, PhD, scholarships. #At the ceremony in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the fund, Femi Ajayi, said that the new beneficiaries had brought the number of recipients of the scholarship programme to 2, 974 since it began in 2000. “Today, we are inducting 217 scholars, including 170 fresh MSc scholars, four deferred as well as 43 fresh PhD scholars,” he said. He said that no fewer than 500 candidates sat for the examination, out of which 217 were selected. According to Mr. Ajayi, PTDF has so far sponsored the training of 2,412 MSc students in Petroleum Engineering, Gas Engineering, Geo-Science, Off- Shore Engineering, Geology and other oil and gas- related courses. He said 488 PhD scholars were also trained in relevant fields overseas since the inception of the Fund, adding that some of the old beneficiaries were engaged in the oil and gas industry and the academia. “The Fund has also trained 74 university lecturers under its University Lecturers Skills Enhancement Training Program, a train-the-trainer programme, in Newcastle, United Kingdom and Grenoble in France. “Twenty others will be leaving Nigeria for Grenoble, France in September this year,” he added. While explaining that the programme could not hold last year due to financial challenges, Mr. Ajayi commended President Goodluck Jonathan for his timely intervention in providing fund this year. He explained that the prevailing trend in the petroleum industry had exposed the wide gap between technology advances in the global scene and the limited capacity of Nigerian professionals. According to him, non-availability of some core courses in Nigerian universities which are relevant to oil and gas sector, necessitates the need to send Nigerians abroad for studies in such areas. He said that on their return, the beneficiaries were expected to fill up the skills gap in the industry “in the area of state-of-the-art technologies”. “One of the main objectives of the Overseas Scholarship Scheme is to encourage and stimulate continuous learning and technology development in the petroleum industry,” he said. “It also aims to expose Nigerians to the latest technological advancement in the global petroleum industry. “It seeks to accelerate the development of local capacities in an international competitive environment thereby enhancing local content participation,” he said. While congratulating the recipients, the executive secretary advised them to be diligent in their studies, and reminded them of the need to return home after their studies to help in building the country. “There is actually a bond for the PhD students although we have not been enforcing that bond because we believe that you should be patriotic to serve your country,” he said. https://m.premiumtimesng.com/news/166547-ptdf-gives-masters-doctorate-degree-scholarships-to-217-nigerians.html |

The Federal Government has approved the employment of 490 Environmental Health Officers (EHO) to man border areas to prevent further spread of Ebola disease. The Minister of Environment, Mrs Laurentia Mallam, made this known at the inauguration of the Governing Board of Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) in Abuja on Monday. Mallam said that the action was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to boost staff strength to check further spread of the deadly disease. She said that President Goodluck Jonathan had mandated the ministry to employ professionals to man border areas as well as ports, to ensure that those environments were kept clean. She, however, acknowledged the fact that the number to be recruited was inadequate, adding that more would be recruited in due course with the approval of the President. “Ebola is real and the Federal Government is ready to fight it. “Mr President has made funds available to the Ministry of Health to control further spread of the disease. “Nigerians, on their part, should be conscious of their environment and keep the environment clean all the time. “Though the recruitment of additional 490 environmental health officers for this purpose is not even enough because Nigeria is very big and this number cannot reach out to all states. “I believe that our President is committed to the prevention of this disease.” Mallam said that the ministry was ready to work with the council to ensure the early return of EHO, with the aim of attaining the level of effectiveness witnessed in the past. She stressed the need to key into the initiative by states and local councils for the prevention of diseases. The minister urged the council to report all cases of breach of the code of ethics of the profession by some erring members for discipline. “We want to re-introduce the environmental health officers’ cadre in our various communities in order to restore environmental sanity. “My ministry is ready to work with the council to ensure the early return of the environmental health officers with the aim of attaining the level of effectiveness witnessed during the colonial era and beyond. “I request the council to look into issues as well as reports of breach of the code of ethics of the profession by some members across the nation. “I want you to carry out full investigation and ensure that integrity is the watchword of practitioners, and any person, no matter how highly placed, found to have compromised should be appropriately sanctioned. In his remarks, Mr Augustine Ebisike, the Registrar of the council, commended the government for constituting the board. Ebisike said that the council over 2,000 certificates of registration for practitioners yet to be signed, due to lack a governing board. He said that the council would improve in its operational capability, to prevent outbreak of diseases in Nigeria. He also expressed commitment of the council to tackle the outbreak and further spread of the Ebola disease. Responding, Prof. Oladapo Afolabi, the newly inaugurated board Chairman, urged every stakeholder in the health and environment sectors to play their roles in ensuring that the issue of Ebola was addressed quickly. Afolabi, who was a former Head of Service of the Federation and Permanent Secretary of the ministry, appealed to the Federal Government to employ more professionals to meet the WHO requirement of one EHO to 8,000 people. He said that the council, under his watch, would not hesitate to discipline those who would bring the image of the profession to ridicule. NAN reports that 11 members were sworn in as new members of the board of the council which operated without a governing board in the last two years. BY; VICTORIA OJEME ABUJA - President Goodluck Jonathan Monday described late Patrick Sawyer actions as pure ‘madness’ and craziness. Jonathan made the statement at the annual Interfaith Conference in Abuja. The president who expressed his disappointment with the way and manner Sawyer brought Ebola to Nigeria assured citizens that government is ready to stop the disease. “As a government, we promise that we will do everything humanly possible to contain the Ebola virus. Jonathan informed the gathering that the federal government planned to rally the 36 states governors and their Commissioners of Health to rescue the nation from further spread of the disease. “On Wednesday, I will meet with governor of the states, and they must come along with their commissioners of Health. We must make sure that every state is prepared, where they lack, the federal government will support them,” The president said that his discussion with the head of WHO has given him more information about the virus assured the gathering that the virus will be stopped from causing more harm. “My conversation with the WHO DG, Dr Margaret Chan was revealing, she said 60 per cent of the transmission was spread during burials. That is why in my announcement, I’ve been saying that people should be careful about burials.” “Some people like burial ceremonies. This is not the time for burial ceremony, somebody is dead, he is dead, leave him there. This is not the best time for those ceremonies.” “If he is dead, he is already dead, Sawyer that brought this Ebola to Nigeria; his sister died of Ebola. And he started acting somehow, his country asked him not to leave the country, let them observe him, but the crazy man decided to leave and found his way here.” Meanwhile, the federal government Monday said one new case was recorded over the weekend, bringing the number to 10. Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu stated this Monday in a press conference on the update of the Ebola Virus Disease(EVD). Chukwu, said “it has been 22 days since EVD first landed in Nigeria. As at today, 177 primary and secondary contacts of the index case have been placed under surveillance or isolation. 9 developed EVD, bringing the total number of cases in Nigeria to 10. Of these 10, 2 have died (the Liberian American and the Nigerian nurse) while 8 are alive and currently on treatment.” The minister alongside Minister of Environment, Mrs Laurentia Mallam, Interior Minister, Abba Moro, Special Duties Minister, Tanimu Turaki and Minister of Information, Labaran Maku stated that “Nigeria wishes to emphasize that, it essentially remained an Ebola Virus free country until this incidence of importation and unfortunate contamination. We will continue to work with all stakeholders, local and international partners to maximize on this and intensify efforts to contain and treat the existing cases.” Citing efforts to stop the spread of the virus in the West African sub-region, Chukwu said government role at the recent meeting in Accra, Ghana projected Nigeria’s “leading, pioneering and compassionate role during the summit with the first and only donation of 3.5Million USD humanitarian and capacity building aid to the three affected countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, the West African Health Organization (WAHO), and the ECOWAS Ebola Fund.” Chukwu said the “Liberian Government has expressed its deepest sympathies and regrets that Mr. Sawyer had even embarked on this tragic journey, which has brought needless sufferings, death and has placed an unnecessary stress on our health system. In the same spirit, we share in solidarity, the grief of the governments and people of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone as we confront this challenge together.” The minister further urged Nigerians not to see Liberia and her citizens in bad light considering the harmonious relationship the two countries have had over the years. “The government of Nigeria, shall continue to discharge its responsibilities within the sub region as we collectively confront and stop this outbreak of Ebola.” He however, told journalists that aside from working with the US government on how to assist, government was also looking at other options in terms of drugs that could revive Ebola patients. He said Nigeria’s quest to get hold of drugs that will bring relief to Ebola patients is “still work-in-progress” adding that, healthcare workers entrusted with providing care to patients have been given Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as measure to prevent them from contracting the virus. Chukwu who stated that the Ebola virus still remained restricted to Lagos State also reiterated the resolve of the federal government to find a solution to the lingering crisis between it and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), especially the need to call off the nationwide strike. The minister was more optimistic that the crisis will be settled soon, but maintained that “the NMA strike is not affecting the treatment of Ebola patients.” https://dvsl3w2q45hb8.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/ebola-victim1.gif http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/jonathan-describes-late-patrick-sawyer-actions-pure-madness/ |
