Politics › Why Buhari Rejected Wali As Acting INEC Chairman - PM News by dridowu(op): 1:39pm On Jul 02, 2015
P.M.NEWS can confirm authoritatively today that President Muhammadu Buhari did not endorse Mr.Mohammed Wali as acting chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission because of his links with the Peoples Democratic Party.

Wali is a brother of Senator Abdallah Wali, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the April election in Sokoto state.
‘The two Walis are of the same mother and father, the same compound”, said a source close to the dramatic change by President Muhammadu Buhari, few hours after Professor Attahiru Jega, handed over to Wali after five years in the saddle.

Wali is a national commissioner of INEC from Sokoto state.

“There is a feeling that with the Sokoto governorship tussle still before the court, and INEC a party in the case, Mohammed Wali’s position may be compromised”, said the source.

“The presidency now has a feeling that the three-hour INEC boss was PDP’s man and that explained why PDP was attacking President Buhari’s choice later on, apart from the fact that Buhari is empowered constitutionally to appoint an acting or substantive INEC chairman”, the source added.

PDP’s spokesman, Olisa Metuh had attacked President Buhari for naming Amina Bala Zakari as the Commission’s Acting Chairman. Amina from Jigawa state, was also a national commissioner at INEC.

The PDP charged that Amina Bala Zakari may be a loyalist of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from Nigeria’s northwest zone, an accusation that points back at the party itself that Wali may also have been a stooge of PDP.

Mr. Metuh said that the PDP was deeply disturbed by the development in INEC, wondering why President Buhari, who knew all along that Mr. Jega would leave office by June 30, had to wait for the outgoing Chairman to hand over to one of the National Commissioners only for the President to reverse the situation immediately. According to the PDP spokesman, the development was likely to inject bad blood in the Commission.

“The situation in INEC since the PDP government reformed and granted it operational autonomy has been peaceful, but Tuesday’s untidy overruling of Professor Jega and appointing of Mrs. Amina Zakari as Acting Chairman which, we gathered, was influenced by personal relationship with the Presidency and one of the new Governors of the North West, ostensibly to pave the way for the APC at the electoral tribunals, has completely eroded public trust in the commission,” said Mr. Metuh.

But In a statement, media adviser to the President, Femi Adesina said Metuh’s attack lacked any factual foundation.
“President Buhari certainly did not “overrule” Prof. Attahiru Jega in appointing Mrs Amina Zakari as the Acting INEC Chairman, as Mr Metuh alleged.

“Prof. Jega’s purported handing over to another Commissioner cannot be construed as an “appointment” because only the President has the constitutional authority, which he exercised to appoint Mrs Zakari as acting Chairman of INEC.

”Contrary to Mr Metuh’s allegations, President Buhari’s appointment of Mrs Zakari as Acting INEC Chariman was based entirely on merit, her vast experience in the internal operations of INEC and the President’s commitment to affirmative action in support of gender equality, because, apart from being fully qualified for the position, Mrs Zakari was the only woman among the six Commissioners considered.

“Due Process was certainly followed in Mrs Zakari’s appointment. Mr Metuh’s spurious claims of her appointment having been influenced by “personal relationship with the Presidency” and a Governor in the North-West “to pave the way for the APC” at election tribunals should be disregarded by the public.

“The allegations are nothing but falsehoods contrived by Mr Metuh to unjustly denigrate a President popularly elected by Nigerians to undo the damage done to the nation by years of PDP rule.

Romance › I’m Obsessed With Sex by dridowu(op): 12:32pm On Jul 02, 2015
Dear Bunmi,
I’m 26 years old and single with a job I love. My problem is sex— I’m obsessed with it and think about it all the time. I find myself fantasising about women I meet on the bus or in the street.
Sometimes I’m late for work because I’m looking at girls in magazines at home and wanking off.
What can I do?
Jacob, bye-mail.

Dear Jacob,
You are currently locked in a very destructive cycle. At orgasm, the brain releases feel good endorphins, which can give you a temporary high if you’re feeling stressed or down.
The danger is sex then becomes an easy release from these problems rather than dealing with their root cause.
You need to find an experienced counsellor you can talk to. In the meantime, get a grip on your emotions; don’t keep those magazines where they could be easily accessible to you.
Find a girlfriend and go out more.

Politics › Ondo Residency Card Utilization Takes Off Today by dridowu(op): 10:06am On Jul 02, 2015
The total implementation of the Ondo State Government’s residency card initiative, otherwise known as Kaadi Igbeayo, will begin today, the government has announced.

Speaking with journalists in Akure Wednesday, the state Commissioner for Information, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, said the take-off ceremony of the total utilisation of the scheme would be presided over by Governor, Olusegun Mimiko at an event designed for the purpose by 10a.m. at the Adegbamile House in the state capital.

The implementation exercise he added will take off with four key sectors adding that the utilisation of the smart card will begin with initial focus on the health, education, agric and the micro-credit areas.

According to the commissioner, from July 2 when the utilisation phase begins, school pupils and students who enjoy government’s school shuttle scheme would have to present their parent’s smart card to access the facility.

He also mentioned that those who want to benefit from the government’s subsidised agricultural input as well as those who want to draw from government’s micro- finance scheme would need to present their smart card before their application could be considered.

He added that though the smart card has been operational in the health sector, especially with patrons of the mother and child hospitals, the commissioner informed that its utilisation would now be extended to those who will be seeking to use the government facilities at the medical village and other government health facilities.

“Most of the state’s health initiatives are accessed on subsidized basis and for the facilities to be accessed, beneficiaries must possess proof that they are resident in the state and pay tax to the state and the smart card will make this possible.

“For instance, 40 per cent of those who enjoy our mother and child hospital’s facilities are from neighboring states and this is a programme designed only for residents in the state irrespective of their state of origin. So for people from other states to continue to enjoy the facility, they would have to pay a premium.”

Imploring every resident to ensure they secure their cards, the commissioner said from July 2, the government would begin the enforcement of the usage of the card as it will become a condition for residents of the state to access government services.

He listed other advantages of the cards to include: facilitation of efficient record keeping, anti-corruption solution in the public service to enable higher level of qualitative and quantitative service delivery in people oriented sub-sector such as health, education, transportation and agriculture.

Others, he said, are facilitating the systematic development of database for efficient security and surveillance purpose, facilitating the use and management of government facilities such as public transportation among others.

He thus directs those who have not obtained their cards to visit the Civic Data Centres in their respective local governments to enable them obtain the card.

Politics › Aregbesola To Pay March, April Salaries By Friday by dridowu(op): 12:32pm On Jul 01, 2015
Governor Rauf Aregbesola has stated that frantic efforts are being made by the state government to pay the salaries of local government workers and primary school teachers by Friday.

Aregbesola who began paying the backlog of salaries owed civil servants this week said that he will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that workers receive their pay.

In post of his Facebook wall he wrote: “LGA workers and primary school teachers would get March and April salaries within the next two days, their outstanding will be two months. Its indeed trying times for us, may God see us through. Osun a dara,” he wrote.

He noted that the salaries of other civil servants and secondary school teachers is yet to be paid. “Further efforts are being made to liquidate all the outstanding salaries of Osun workers. As it stands now state civil servants and secondary schools teachers are owed six months arrears.”

Aregbesola has come under severe attack for failing to pay the salaries of workers, this he blamed on the dwindling federal allocation.

Immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan’s Helipad was pictured and from all indications President Muhammadu Buhari’s $500,000 worth Helipad must be far more expensive.

Former President Jonathan’s helipad was built for him in his Otuoke community by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)

A standard helipad it expected to measure 16m by 16m.

President Buhari has been heavily criticised for reports that emerged that the government was building a helipad for him in Daura, Katsina State.

It has been reported that the figure budgeted for the construction of the said helipad is up to $500,000.

However, it is unlikely that the facility will be so expensive.

Here is the helipad in Otuoke, Bayelsa State.

Politics › We Did Everything To Win Lagos – PDP by dridowu(op): 7:05pm On Jun 30, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party said on Tuesday that it did everything within its power to win the last governorship election in Lagos State.

While the PDP fielded Mr. Jimi Agbaje as its candidate for the election, the winning party in the election, the All Progressives Congress, had Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode as its candidate.

It was generally believed that the 2015 governorship election presented the best opportunity for the opposition to win the election for the first time in the state since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

The outcome of the election, however, jolted the PDP, which was financially backed by the equally defeated President Goodluck Jonathan, who was the Presidential candidate of the party.

It was however believed that the unity with which the party went to the election in the state had been fractured as different factions emerged blaming each other for the party’s loss at the poll.

But the Lagos State Chairman of the party, Capt. Tunji Shelle (retd.), said peace would soon return to the troubled party in the state.

Shelle told journalists in Abuja on Tuesday that he had been directed to hold a peace meeting with the warring group in the party in his state.

He said he was happy that the crisis in the state chapter of the party was discussed at the PDP Election Review Committee meeting, which was held in Abuja on Tuesday.

At the meeting, which was presided over by the Chairman of the Committee, who is also the Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, Shelle said the committee was happy with his leadership style.

He said, “Peace is returning to Lagos PDP soon. We are on track and I can tell you that as one big family, we are on course.

“We did everything to win the governorship election in the state, but the ruling party manipulated the election, by manipulating the use of card readers and other forms of rigging.

“That was how the APC won. If there was no manipulation, we would have won. But we are sure of winning at the tribunal.”

On the crisis rocking the state chapter of the party, he said, “some members of my executive revolted against me but I’m happy to tell you that I’m the recognised chairman of the party in the state.”

Meanwhile, Ekweremadu said his committee would soon embark on zonal meetings to find a lasting solution to the crisis in the party at the national level.

Car Talk › How To Drive In The Rain by dridowu(op): 11:26am On Jun 30, 2015
It is the time of the year with heavy rain and unfortunately with rain comes loads of road accidents. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, a reasonable percentage of all road accidents are weather-related, with the majority occurring during cloudy/darkened weather and/or on wet tarmac in the rain.

Wet driving conditions can be very hazardous for a number of reasons. Roads that are wet from the rain build up a film of oily water and grease that make it more difficult for tyres to gain traction. Additionally, driver visibility decreases greatly in rainy conditions.

While driving in the rain cannot altogether be avoided, extra precautions can be taken by the driver being vigilant and practising the best road safety methods when it’s essential to drive in the rain.

Tips on how to drive in the rain:

Demist your front and back windscreens: This may seem like a simple tip but you must ensure you have the best vision possible when driving in the rain. Therefore, make sure that your front and, especially, the rear screen defrosters are working effectively.

Do not use your high beam headlights: While it is important to use low beam headlights in the wet, high beam headlights are likely to reflect back on you thus reducing your visibility.

When driving through water: Generally, if the water is deeper than the bottom of your doors or the bottom third of your wheels, it is inadvisable to attempt driving through it. Use extreme caution and slow right down, it is important to watch the flow of the water and how fast it is going. If the water is too high, take a different route rather than driving through the flood and risking damaging your electronic control systems.

Drive in the tracks of the car in front: Following another car’s tracks on wet roads can reduce the amount of water between the road and your car tyres. Whenever possible, slow down by taking your foot off the accelerator and avoid using your brakes.

Steer into the skid: The first thing you should do is to remain calm, ease your foot off the accelerator and carefully steer in the direction you want the front of the car to go. This is called ‘steering into the skid’ and will bring the back end of your car in line with the front. For cars without anti-lock braking system, avoid using your brakes. If your car has ABS, brake firmly as you ‘steer into the skid.’

Engage in regular auto maintenance: Make sure you replace old, brittle windshield wipers, since they make already-challenging rainy weather visibility much worse. Check your brakes and tyres regularly. Keep windshield clean and use your windshield defroster to keep the inside of your windows moisture-free.

Be aware of the most dangerous driving conditions: The road is at its slickest at the beginning of a rainstorm that follows a long dry spell. This is because the residual oil and rubber-dust that has accumulated on the roads will mix with the water to form a very slick, skid-causing mixture. This slippery residue is especially prominent in intersections and other places where cars must idle for periods of time. If possible, avoid driving in the early part of rainstorms that follow long dry periods, and if you must drive, exercise extra caution.

Do not use cruise control: If your car hydroplanes, the cruise control could actually cause your car to accelerate, which would be particularly dangerous.

Use your headlights, but not your high beams: Be sure to turn your headlights on, even in the lightest of rains. Headlights will help you be more visible to other drivers, as well as improve your own visibility. Do not, however, turn on your high beams. Doing so causes the light to bounce off of particles of water in the air, and will create a blinding effect to other drivers.

Be wary of water collected on the road: Never drive through moving water that you cannot see the ground beneath since doing so could cause your car to be swept off the road. Also, avoid large puddles altogether; driving into deep water or splashing water up under your car can cause considerable damage to your vehicle.

Tap your brakes lightly after crossing through a puddle: This will help dry out some of the water on your rotors.

Use the centre lanes: Water tends to collect on the sides of the roads; so drive as closely to the centre of the road as you can without crossing over the yellow lines or being a hazard to cars around you.

Avoid using the brakes when possible: If it is safe to do so, slow down by releasing your foot from the throttle pedal rather than hitting the brakes. When you do need to use your brakes, try to brake as early as possible to alert drivers behind you that you are slowing down, and apply a steady but firm pressure.

Maintain a proper distance between your car and the one ahead: Under normal conditions, there should be a 10 second gap, but in the rain, cars need two to three times more stopping distance.

Slow Down: Decreasing your speed is the most important piece of advice when driving in the rain. Particularly when approaching puddles, be cautious. Hitting puddles of even a few inches at high speeds can cause you to lose control of your vehicle and in some instances, vehicles’ engines have knocked through hydro-lock. When driving in wet conditions, you are also more likely to encounter accidents or debris in the road that you will need to avoid. Travelling slowly ensures that you will have time to see and respond in a timely manner, even with decreased visibility and a longer stopping distance.

Crime › Nigerian Drug Smuggler Arrested In Delhi, India by dridowu(op): 5:00pm On Jun 27, 2015
Shillong, June 26 (IANS) A Nigerian drug smuggler has been arrested by Shillong-based customs officials from New Delhi, where he was under detaintion after his visa lapsed, an official said on Friday.

Samnneji Chukwuemeka alias Moses Jeffery was wanted in Meghalaya for trying to smuggle drugs from the state to Holland in 2011.

"He (Chukwuemeka) has under security radar for nearly four years after we foiled his attempt to smuggle 645 grams of brown sugar from Shillong to Holland way back in August 2011 through a courier agency," Superintendent of Customs (Preventive) Shillong, D. Bhattacharjee, told IANS.

In October 2011, Indian customs department issued a red alert notice against Chukwuemeka after it found that his passport number also figured in the parcelling box which contained the seized drugs.

"Finally, we managed to arrest Chukwuemeka only after the immigration cell at New Delhi alerted us that he has been detained by Delhi Police for over staying in India," Bhattacharjee said.
