A former NDDC Commissioner has been convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment by an Akwa Ibom State High court for stealing 56 transformers meant for oil producing communities in the state. Pastor Godwin Moffat Eyo is a former Commissioner representing Akwa Ibom State on the board of the intervention agency, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC. The convict, who was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a 56-count charge that borders on stealing and conversion of 56 electricity transformers released to him by NDDC for distribution to communities in Akwa Ibom state, was found guilty on 37 of those counts by Justice Idongesit Ntem B. Isua. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment on each of the counts but discharged and acquitted on 19 counts. The sentences are to run concurrently. The convict was said to have applied for 90 (Ninety) electricity transformers and four generators from NDDC for Akwa Ibom State sometime in February, 2006. Approval was given for 70 (Seventy) transformers but he diverted same to his house in Eket on the pretext that there was no space to accommodate the newly issued 70 units of transformers at the NDDC office in Uyo. He thereafter sent only 14 Units to NDDC office in Uyo while he withheld 56 units which he could not account for till date. The 56 transformers are valued at Two Hundred and Twenty million, One hundred and Seventy Six thousand, Three hundred and Twenty Naira (N220, 176, 320). One of the count reads, “That you Pastor Godwin Moffat Eyo being a former Akwa Ibom State representative on the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on or about 14th April, 2006 at Uyo in the Uyo Judicial Division did fraudulently steal a 300 KVA/33/0.415 Transformer Serial No. 1712496 valued at Four Million, Eighteen Thousand, Five Hundred and Sixty Naira (N4,018,560.00), property of NDDC and thereby committed an offence of stealing contrary to Section 399 and punishable under Section 404 of the Criminal Code Cap. 38, Volume 2, Laws of Akwa Ibom State, 2000”. http://www.channelstv.com/2015/04/28/ex-nddc-commissioner-jailed-three-years-for-stealing-transformers/

A 45-year-old commercial driver, Saturday Akpomose, narrowly escaped death last Saturday, after he was attacked by seven dogs at Ajah area of Lagos State. The timely intervention of residents and passers-by saved the driver from the dogs. Akpomose,Akpomose, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, had gone to the area with his wife to visit his in-law, Mr. Christian Peter, when the dogs pounced on him. Vanguard gathered that the dogs, owned by a Navy Captain, were being taken out to ease themselves at a nearby uncompleted building, when they saw Akpomose and pounced on him. The matter was reported at Ogombo Police Division, which referred Akpomose to the General Hospital at Akodo, for immediate treatment due to the severity of his injuries. His story When Vanguard visited the victim in the hospital, he said: “My wife and I went to visit my in-law on Sunday. He lives at Okun Ajah Road, in Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area. Later, on Tuesday morning, I just strolled out of the compound and came across the dogs. “As I stepped out, I saw a security man coming out with several dogs. They were very huge Alsatian dogs. I was terrified when I saw them and as I tried to go back in, they overpowered the man holding them. “As I bent down to pick a stone and scare them away, they pounced on me and that was all I knew. They bit me in almost all parts of my body. As I screamed, some residents came out and tried to scare away the dogs with sticks. “My screams even woke up my in-law who was asleep in the house. At a time, I became weak and unconscious and it was the people who rushed me to the hospital.” Dogs’ owner intervenes When Vanguard visited the residence of the dogs’ owner, the Chief Security Officer attached to the building, who identified himself simply as Victor, said: “Immediately I got back home, I explained his condition to my boss who directed me to see his family and take a decision on how to transfer the victim to his own private hospital for proper medical attention. “We have bought all the drugs they asked us to buy. We are showing the receipt to you just to let you know that we care about the victim.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/7-dogs-attack-driver-in-lagos/ Discussion Continued Here: https://www.nairaland.com/2281820/7-dogs-attack-commercial-driver

I don't think recalling of the ambassador is right in the 1st place. Ambassador recalling should be the last at least till average Nigerian citizen have being evacuated from there. |
South Africa has condemned Nigeria's decision to recall its ambassador over a spate of attacks against foreigners.http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-32473934 |

The financial troubles of Enyimba International FC of Aba may know no bound for now given its huge indebtedness to players totaling over two N200 million. This startling information was divulged to Saturday Independent League Zone during the week by a top official of the club who pleaded anonymity, adding that the total amount covers the allowances, sign-on fee and other emoluments. The official disclosed that the team has not paid any of the aforementioned entitlements to its players since 2002 to date. This ugly development the official also revealed is presently affecting the fortunes of the club in terms of performances at the local and international levels as the team may not be able to replicate its 2013/2014 feat to get the continental ticket. In a chat ahead of Enyimba Week 5 away clash at FC Taraba the official said, "Nobody should blame players or officials if Enyimba is turning out any good results as maybe expected. "The players are still being owed huge sum of money till date and the situation is not getting any better. Since 2002 till date, it will interest you to know that the players' allowances, sign-on fee and other entitlements have not been paid by the club. Is that how to run football," he queried. The official warned that, "Except urgent steps are taken, the club may witness a 'Tsunami' of players and officials in no distant future because everyone is tired and just waiting for an opportunity to strike." However, the official was quick to conclude by crediting the club for its magnanimity in the regular payment of the monthly salaries. "The monthly salaries is regular, the management is trying in that aspect." In same vein, the club management led by Anyansi Agwu, has never denied the pathetic financial position of the players at any point in time justifying the claims leveled against it. http://allafrica.com/stories/201504260194.html?viewall=1 |

Hundreds of people have been killed after a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck Nepal causing extensive damage in the capital Kathmandu. At least 758 have been confirmed dead across the country following the strongest quake to hit Nepal in 80 years, according government officials. The quake toppled Kathmandu's iconic nine- storey Dharahara tower, with rescuers left scrambling to reach some 50 people reported to have been trapped under the rubble. Earlier police removed around a dozen bodies from the 19th Century UNESCO-recognised monument, also known as the Bhimsen Tower. Tremors were also felt in neighbouring India, with 34 people, including a 15-year-old girl, reported to have been killed in the north of the country. The quake also triggered a "huge avalanche" on Mount Everest, leaving at least ten climbers dead. Mountaineer Alex Gavan tweeted from Mount Pumori: "Everest base camp huge earthquake then huge avalanche from pumori. "Running for life from my tent. Unhurt. Many many people up the mountain." Another climber, Daniel Mazur, said Everest base camp had been "severely damaged" and his team was trapped. The quake struck 80km (50 miles) east of the central city of Pokhara shortly before noon local time and was followed by a magnitude 6.6 aftershock, with tremors felt for hours afterwards. It was relatively shallow, making it more powerful. Little is yet known about the extent of damage to Pokhara, but in the densely-populated city of Kathmandu hospitals are struggling to cope. Televised images from outside the city's main hospital show the injured being forced to wait outside on the street for treatment. http://news.sky.com/story/1471939/nepal-earthquake-topples-buildings-killing-758
