Stephen Keshi on Tuesday agreed to a new two-year contract to coach Nigeria’s national men’s football team, ending months of uncertainty and speculation over his future. Some opposed extending Keshi’s tenure as the Super Eagles coach after they failed to qualify for the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea. Talks on a renewal also stalled in February when Keshi described Nigeria’s extension offer as a “slave contract”. But the 53-year-old called for a fresh start on Tuesday at an official signing ceremony, saying any lingering bitterness needed to be put in the past. “This is the time for us to come together to fight for this nation,” Keshi said, adding: “I am begging you all to please put the past behind and let’s start afresh.” Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee chairman Felix Anyansi-Agwu also described Keshi’s second stint as coach as “a new beginning”. “The entire (NFF) board has absolute confidence in the capacity of Stephen Keshi to take the Super Eagles to new heights,” he told reporters. Keshi’s initial contract of three years ran out after last year’s World Cup in Brazil, where Nigeria reached the last 16 knockout stages. He had previously steered the side to a win at the 2013 African championships, raising his profile in Africa’s most populous nation after a string disappointments at the continent’s top tournament. The NFF was engulfed in controversy last year, including over Keshi’s status and irregularities that marred a vote to choose the federation’s new leaders. FIFA was forced to step in, warning that Nigeria could be disqualified from international competition if the NFF failed to clean up its act. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/football-keshi-signs-two-year-extension-as-nigeria-coach/?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook

An armed robbery suspect, Williams (other names withheld), has regretted not killing himself before his arrest. Williams, who is detained at the State Anti Robbery Squad(SARS) of the Lagos State Police Command, has just been released from prison for the same offence of armed robbery. “I am very stupid, if not, I should have killed myself before I was arrested. Why I said so is that I was in prison and my family did all they could to release me. When I came out from the prison, I was so broke that I needed money badly. As I was thinking of what to do to, I met my old guy in the job. He had been in prison too. He invited me to a dinner. “It was at the dinner that he introduced senator to me. Senator is our leader. He told me that senator’s mode of operation was highly sophisticated to be called armed robbery. After his explanation, I became interested in joining the gang. Really, our first outing was impressive and interesting. We were dressed in the Economic and Financial Crime Commission’s (EFCC) uniform and in a convoy. Each police check- point we came across, they would pay us complements. In fact, at any given time, I even forgot that we were into crimes. “We would invite forex dealers that we had some Naira to change to dollars or any foreign currency. When our victim sees our convoy, he would be convinced that we were genuine. We would now force the money from our victim and dump him/her along the road, we were doing the business both in Abuja and Lagos. I think, we made enough money. “But my regret is that I didn’t kill myself when the police came for me. I should have l killed myself before my arrest because, I promised my family that I have changed. I even told them that I was a born again Christian” The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, who paraded the suspect among others, said Williams had really been to prison.” But he was released. His gang leader, Senator, was also released. This time around, we will go the extra mile and ensure that they face the law.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=115598 |

The Lagos State Government Monday announced Saturday May 2nd, 2015, as the new date for the 2015 Lagos Carnival saying the change from the traditional Easter Monday was consequent upon the shift in the date of the nation’s General Elections which was concluded Saturday April 11, 2015 nationwide. A statement signed by the Commissioner for Tourism and Inter-governmental Affairs, Mr. Disun Holloway, quoted the State Government as saying the change of date was approved by the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, following “the alteration in the electoral calendar”. Last Sunday, the Lagos Boat Regatta, which traditionally precedes the Carnival, was held with pump and pageantry at the usual Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Ikoyi, venue of the festival. Both the Boat Regatta and the Carnival are part of the Lagos Black Heritage Festival. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=916490321705568&id=492378324116772&refid=28&_ft_=qid.6139882812315416150%3Amf_story_key.-6630249065121553130

Mrs Roseline Akinsola, 50, on Monday delivered a set of twins after 14 years of childlessness. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akinsola, who works at the Ekiti State Christian Pilgrims Board, was full of praises to God for answering her prayers. The mother of two girls, who weighed 4.2kg and 2.3kg, advised other couples in need of children not to lose hope. Akinsola, who on her Facebook page, says she hails from Ilawe-Ekiti, in an interview with NAN, expressed gratitude to God for giving her the children after several years. ” I thank God for the new name he has given to me; before, I was being called “Iya Iyanu’’ without a child, but today, my name has changed to “Mummy Twins.’’ “Many of my colleagues, friends and neighbours mocked and sidelined me, but because I stood firm on the words of God, He answered my prayers. “I thank my husband, who inspite of the troubles and problems from family members, friends, colleagues and neighbours still believe in me and God. “He stood by me like a father in all ways and also believed in God all through the crisis. I also thank my siblings who stood by me in prayers for years. “Let me thank God for all those who stood by me in prayers and encouraged me not to desist from serving God. “These children are indeed signs that God never forgets his own people who diligently seek him and believe in his words, ” she said. The father of the twins,Babatunde,49, also expressed gratitude to God for the children. “We fast, pray and cry unto God for the fruits of the womb for years, but I am happy that today, God has finally fulfilled his promise to my family. “I thank members of our church under the callings of Pastor and Mrs David Ajileye for their prayers and care for my family,’’ the happy father, who is also a civil servant, said. Ajileye, who is the General Overseer of the Way of Life Bible Church, Ado-Ekiti, thanked God for his blessings in the lives of the couple. “We have known the couple for over 15 years and they have been steadfast and faithful in serving God inspite of the challenges they were facing. “For years, I and my wife have been praying to God to give the couple the fruit of the womb; I am so happy that the lord has answered their prayers. “The church witnessed a similar miracle in 2013 when a couple, members of our church delivered a set of twins, a boy and a girl after 31 years of childlessness,’’ he said. He advised the couple to teach and train the children in the ways of the lord. NAN reports that the mother and the twins were in good health as at press time. *WHO scientists say not angry god behind strange deaths in Ode-Irele Pesticide poisoning was the likely cause of the mysterious deaths of at least 18 people in a southwestern Nigerian town earlier this week, the World Health Organization said Sunday. The “current hypothesis is cause of the event is herbicides”, WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said in a Tweet. “Tests done so far are negative for viral and bacterial infection,” he added. The victims began showing symptoms early last week in what Ondo state spokesman Kayode Akinmade called a “mysterious disease”, prompting fears of a new infectious disease outbreak in a region ravaged by Ebola. The victims, whose symptoms included headache, weight loss, blurred vision and loss of consciousness, died within a day of falling ill in the town of Ode-Irele, in southwestern Ondo state. The Ondo state health commissioner, Dayo Adeyanju, told AFP Saturday that 23 people had been affected. Akinmade said health officials and experts from the government and aid agencies, as well as WHO epidemiologists, had arrived in Ode-Irele to investigate the deaths. The tests were carried out at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, the WHO said. A high chief of the town had attributed the deaths to the anger of the god of Molokun. High Chief Moses Enimade, next in command to Oba Cornelius Olanrewaju-Lebi, debunked the rumour that the deaths were caused by strange disease or Ebola virus. No fewer than 20 youths reportedly died of severe headaches and blindness in the town recently. Enimade contended that some stubborn youths broke into the inner room of Molokun Shrine on April 15. “Molokun is a deity of the land, only the Chief Priest and High Chief Gboguron are qualified to enter the shrine.’’ The chief said the youths entered the shrine and made away with traditional items in a bid to acquire extra-ordinary powers and engage in money ritual. “They were not qualified to enter the room (shrine). They had to face death penalty’’; he emphasised. “Because these youths want to be rich at all costs, they entered the sacred place and made away with traditional items and 20 of them have died as a result of their desperate acts, “We have to appease the gods or else many will still die and we have to bury them according to tradition. Their corpses belong to the gods and will be exhumed if buried by their families.’’ http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/04/19/who-blames-pesticide-for-mysterious-deaths-in-nigerian-town/ |

Further details emerged at the weekend as to the factors that informed the decision of top bigwigs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to betray President Goodluck Jonathan at the just-concluded March 28 presidential election. Insiders in the party said at the weekend that the “age factor” played a major role in forcing a number of the top echelons of the party to drop their guards at critical points and in some cases allow some untoward things happen to the votes. A source described the “age factor” as the age-related campaign mounted by the PDP in a bid to checkmate president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari. It was learnt that in a bid to draw attention to the fact that a 73-year-old should not be allowed to preside over Nigeria’s affairs, the PDP went too far and in the process forced its chieftains into believing that there would be no hope of being allowed to contest the presidential election in 2019. According to sources within the party, constant references to the fact that the PDP believes in the younger generation and that it would ensure that those to take over from Jonathan would be younger than him alienated a number of chieftains who immediately lost interest in mounting a vociferous campaign. A source stated that President Jonathan himself played into the hands of those who betrayed him when he repeatedly mentioned the age factor and the role age would play in determining his successor in 2019, if he succeeds in winning the 2015 election. According to the calculations, President Jonathan’s declaration would automatically disqualify the like of Vice-President Namadi Sambo; Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido; Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, Senate President David Mark, National; Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu and the Governor of Bauchi State, Isa Yuguda from the 2019 race. It was learnt that following repeated mentioning of the age factor, the camps of many bigwigs became jittery and lukewarm towards the Jonathan campaign, thus paving the way for the All Progressives Congress(APC) candidate.Though Governor Aliyu said last week that Jonathan’s refusal to respect the single term pact he had with the governors led to PDP’s defeat, information gathered at the top hierarchy of the part have confirmed the real issues. “I was with one of the top brass during the campaign, and I saw his countenance when the president mentioned the issue of age and suggested that the PDP would ensure the emergence of a younger successor for him if he wins the 2015 election. I recall the man was cold and that was the way it affected all other chieftains, who began to feel what would be in the offing for them if they frontally backed Jonathan to the Presidency in 2015,”a source said. The source stated that Aliyu could not be trusted, because he was in Lagos to attend the PDP Governors’ Forum meeting a week before the election and canvassed for his re-election at the meeting. Meanwhile, some other conspiracy theories have started trending at the weekend revealing the grand plot that knocked Jonathan out of the contest. A document entitled: “Let them know that we know” indicated that alleged massive conspiracy that led to Jonathan’s ouster. The document read in part: “In a gradual process, we will say things the way they were, we will speak of the conspiracy that even the closest ally of President Jonathan entered into in the dark against our people.” The document alleged that the result from Bauchi State was at a stage reading 457,786, for APC and 559,897 for the PDP but that when the anti-Jonathan agenda was allegedly ignited, the figures changed. It made similar allegation about Kano, indicating that the PDP had scored close to half a million votes and was closely trailing the APC before things purportedly changed. http://tribune.com.ng/news/top-stories/item/34111-how-pdp-leaders-betrayed-jonathan

The federal government on Friday said it has met 5,500 megawatts in power generation. It equally disclosed that N1.5bn was lost yearly to vandalism. This is just as President Goodluck Jonathan would soon commence inauguration of completed power projects across the country. This disclosure was made at a joint press briefing by the Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo and Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam at the end of the last meeting of the Board of Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) Ltd, held at the vice presidential wing of the presidential villa. The meeting was chaired by Vice-President Namadi Sambo. According to Nebo, Jonathan's administration had achieved minimum electricity generation capacity of 5,500 megawatts, despite unrelenting sabotage of oil and gas pipelines by vandals. He noted that government was losing N120 million monthly and N1.5 billion yearly to repairs of vandalised pipelines. Nebo stressed that deliberate vandalism of pipelines every two weeks resulted in the nation losing about 1,600 megawatts of electricity at a particular time. The minister charged the incoming government of Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) to step up security surveillance of the petroleum pipelines in the country, as well as consider the digitalisation of the surveillance system. "Four power plants have been completed and will be commissioned in the next couple of weeks; Sapele is one of them, Ihobor is another one. And hopefully and by the grace of God, we intend to do the commissioning very soon so that Nigerians will enjoy even more, the benefits of what the current administration has done in the power sector. "There are literally hundreds of other projects that need to be commissioned. So very soon we are going into commissioning exercise" Nebo said. Suswam said "The board resolved to commission some of the numerous projects under the NIPP programme. Those projects are to be commissioned in the subsequent weeks." Apart from the new power plants, he stressed that the government had completed more transmission lines, but would not be able to complete some sales transactions because of some complications in the bid process and inadequate gas supply. The inability to seal the sale transactions deals, Suswam explained, were not due to fear of the unknown when a new government comes on board next month. Managing Director of the NDPHC, James Olotu, noted that the company's 2013-2014 statement of accounts was now ready for anyone or institution that wanted to know the financial status of NDPHC http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/we-now-generate-5-500-megawatts-of-power-says-fg/207119/ . |
