Lwkmd , PDP coffin indeed |
The defeat suffered by President Goodluck Jonathan, who contested the March 28 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, has been mourned by many chieftains and supporters of the party across the country. Many have said that the loss of power at the centre may signal the death of the party which hitherto prided itself as the largest political party in Africa. To further rub salt on PDP’s injury, a thug who, not too long ago, ‘ported’ from the PDP’s leaky umbrella, organised a ‘befitting’ funeral for the party, which has spent just 16 years out of the initial 60-year rule that one of its leaders predicted. The funeral procession filed out after Prof. Attahiru Jega declared Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari winner of the presidential poll. The thug, now basking in the euphoria of the winning streak of the All Progressives Congress, hired an itinerant musical group and undertakers to lead the procession. The ‘mourners’ sang the funeral durgex they composed for the PDP and danced vigorously round Osogbo, the Osun State capital, even in the scorching sun of the day. The pall bearers carried the coffin wrapped in the PDP colour. The singers and the drummers, with about six trumpeters, entertained all that cared. But those loyal to the PDP watched the procession with suppressed anger. Some broom-wielding excited youths, who were part of the funeral procession, ‘refuelled’ their system with some sachets of intoxicant popularly called pelebe, to be able to weather the stress. Interestingly, the funeral rite in Osogbo coincided with the outburst of a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Godsday Orubebe, at the venue of the announcement of the result of the presidential poll in Abuja. Residents living around Olaiya Junction and Odi Olowo, who saw the procession, thought the remains of the Africa’s largest party were going to be interred at a cemetery in the Oke-Nla area. But a visit to the Police Criminal Investigation Department in Osogbo on Thursday (yesterday) by our correspondent revealed that the police did not allow the ‘corpse’ to rest despite the ‘ Rest in Peace’ boldly printed on the coffin. The coffin, which is now in police custody, is on a bus which has been on the same spot for years. A policeman on duty jokingly said the coffin was still in police custody because the owners had yet to meet the bail conditions. He said that the investigating police officer had vowed not to release it, even if the Minister of Police Affairs, JelilimAdesiyan, who is from Osun State, showed up to secure its release. http://www.punchng.com/election-watch/pdps-coffin-still-in-police-custody/

No room for rascality in Nigeria politics |
Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja Thursday rejected an oral application by lawyer to Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State for an order stopping the on-going move to impeach the governor. Fayose’s lawyer, Ahmed Raji (SAN) had shortly before the end of proceedings in the case seeking to stop the on-going impeachment move, applied orally for an order directing parties to maintain status quo ante bellum “to stop things from degenerating further.” Justice Mohammed, in a ruling, rejected Raji’s prayer and upheld the argument by Terence Vembe, lawyer to Ekiti State Speaker, Adewale Omirin, to the effect that granting such prayer will amount to the court amending its earlier ruling that the defendants were still within time show cause, as earlier ordered by the court. The judge had, last Wednesday, refused Fayose’s ex-parte prayers for interim injunctions restraining Omirin and other defendants in the case from proceeding with the impeachment move. Instead, Justice Mohammed ordered the defendants to show cause why the orders of interim injunction sought by the plaintiffs should not be granted. Plaintiffs in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/302/2015 include Olugbemi Joseph Dele (who claimed to be Speaker of the State Assembly), Ekiti State House of Assembly, Fayose and his deputy, Olusola Kolapo. Listed as defendants are Omirin, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Chief Judge, Ekiti State. At the commencement of proceedings Thursday, Raji urged the court to grant the order of interim injunction on the ground that none of the defendants complied with the court’s order of April 8 directing them to show cause. “None of the defendants has filed any paper and already a life has been lost on the account of trying to carry out the illegal act (impeachment). To save more life, I urge my Lord to grant the reliefs 5, 6, 7 and 8 on our motion paper.” Vembe objected and told the court that his client were contesting the mode of service of the court processes on him, which he said, was done through a newspaper publication on April 11 which was a public holiday. He further faulted the service effected by the plaintiffs via a publication in the Nigerian Tribune newspaper on April 11 on the ground that movements were restricted on that day owing to the governorship and House of Assembly elections held nationwide. In a brief ruling, Justice Mohammed upheld Raji’s argument that Vembe could not canvass any argument on the issue of service orally without putting it in writing as required under the court’s rules. Vembe proceeded to argue that his client was still within time to obey the court’s order directing him and other defendants to show cause. Although Raji objected to Vembe’s further argument that his client was still within time, Justice Mohammed, in yet another brief ruling, upheld Vembe’s argument. The judge noted that the publication ought not to have been done on a public holiday. He held that the three days within which the defendants were required to comply with the court’s order began to run on Tuesday, April 14 and will end on Friday, April 17. “As of today, the 1st defendant is still within time as provided by Order 36 Rule 13 of the Federal High Court Rules,” the judge said. Further hearing in the case has been fixed for April 29. The plaintiffs are, in the substantive suit, seeking nine prayers among which is “an order setting aside the purported notice of impeachment and all steps taken by the 1st defendant (Omirin) with other errant members of the 2nd plaintiff (Ekiti State House of Assembly) in relation to the purported issuance and service of the said notice of impeachment for the purpose of commencing and concluding the impeachment proceedings against Peter Ayodele Fayose and Dr. Olusola Kolapo, except and until there is absolute compliance with provisions of section 36(1) and section 188(1), (2), (3) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/again-court-re%E2%80%8Efuses-to-stop-impeachment-move-against-fayose/

INDICATIONS have emerged that a former Chairman of the Lagos Island Local Government Area, Mr. Wasiu Eshilokun, may emerge as the next Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. A top member of the All Progressives Congress confided in our correspondent on Wednesday that Eshilokun was favoured by the zoning arrangement of the party in Lagos. The tradition of the Assembly is that a first time member cannot emerge as the Speaker but Eshilokun had served as a member of the House between 1999 and 2003 before becoming the chairman of the Lagos Island LGA. The official, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said, “The governor-elect, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, is from Lagos-East senatorial district while his deputy, Dr. Oluranti Adebule, is from Lagos-West. “It is only fair that the Speaker should be from Lagos-Central. There is still intense lobbying for the position but Eshilokun is the most likely candidate to emerge as the Speaker. “Presently, out of the 40 lawmakers in the House, only 20 will be returning and the principal officers of the House such as the Speaker, the deputy speaker and majority leader will not be returning to the House next month. So, Eshilokun seems the most likely candidate.” The PUNCH also learnt from sources that “those in charge of the party” appeared to prefer Eshinlokun as Speaker. “He is a preferred candidate by the leaders of the party,” a source told our correspondent on Wednesday. Eshilokun, who is the immediate past secretary of the APC in the state, almost did not participate in the election when he was involved in a controversy with some party members during the primary last year. The controversy had been over the substitution of his name with that of one Hakeem Masha. Eshilokun had maintained that he polled 186 votes while Masha polled only 70 but the result was manipulated. He subsequently sued the Independent National Electoral Commission, the APC and Masha. A Federal High Court subsequently ruled on March 6, mere five weeks before the April 11 election, that Eshilokun was the winner of the primary and ordered INEC to recognise him as the APC candidate for the Lagos Island constituency 1. He eventually won the poll. http://www.punchng.com/politics/eshilokun-may-emerge-as-lagos-speaker/

The President has directed all ministries, departments and agencies to submit their handover notes to the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by the 20th of April. President Goodluck Jonathan further stressed that the directive is to ensure a smooth transition to the next government. Briefing state house correspondents on the outcome of Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting, the Minister of Information, Mrs Patricia Akwashiki said that the President also asked the ministers to come up with a list of the inherited projects. The Minister further said that President Jonathan also directed the ministers to submit a list of the projects that have been executed as well as all projects initiated by his administration, as well as on-going or abandoned ones so that he would have a comprehensive package to hand over. Mrs Akwashiki added: “This does not mean that government activities have come to an end as the government would continue to function until the hand over date on May 29.” http://www.channelstv.com/2015/04/15/jonathan-directs-parastatals-to-submit-hand-over-notes/ |

Colonel Sambo Dasuki, (retd), Nigeria National Security Adviser (NSA) has given an assurance that the Federal Government was making every effort to ensure that the girls along with every other Nigerian abducted by terrorists are rescued. The NSA who spoke to PRNigeria, a media agency that distributes press releases on behalf of security agencies, also promised that Sambisa Forest, the fortress of Boko Haram terrorists and one of their last remaining camps will be stormed and liberated before the May 29, 2015 presidential hand-over date. Dasuki spoke on the occasion of one year anniversary of the kidnap of the over 200 girls from Chibok, Borno State by Boko Haram militants. Kashim Shettima, the Governor of Borno State recently told journalists that the missing Chibok girls were being held in the dreaded forest. “Right now, all Boko Haram camps, except Sambisa Forest have been destroyed,” the NSA said. According to him, the forest would have since been liberated but for the unfavourable weather condition prevailing in the area as all needed reconnaissance activity and necessary deployment of troops have been made for the operation. “Every movement of the terrorists is being monitored and every necessary detail is being taken care of to rid the country of the last bastion of terrorists infestation,” Dasuki disclosed. He insisted that government is concerned about the welfare of every single Nigerian including the girls adding “aside the Chibok girls, other Nigerian girls, boys, men and women were abducted by the terrorists and all efforts are being made to rescue them all.” While appealing for a little more time to complete the routing of terrorists, Dasuki recalled that before elections were postponed in February, over 20 local governments were occupied by Boko Haram and that most Nigerians were pleasantly surprised that so much was achieved against insurgency within six weeks. While commending President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on the successful conduct of the 2015 round of elections, the security adviser however, noted that nobody pressured the President into conceding defeat in the presidential election. “President Jonathan had already given his words to all the security and service chiefs before the election that he would abide by the decision of Nigerians. At the meeting, he also told them to perform their duties professionally during the polls. “While we anticipated that he would congratulate his opponent if the result is announced in favour of opposition candidate, he gratuitously without prompting of anyone conceded defeat to the surprise of all,” the NSA said. “By that singular gesture he had saved the security agencies and the nation of unnecessary tension and stress in maintaining law and order and curtailing excesses of likely protesters.” While commending the fairness of media in the coverage of elections, he nevertheless urged them to be conscious of malicious reports being sponsored by vested interest. He denied a report that he was at any polling units during the last governorship election and was never involved in any meeting with judicial officers to truncate any democratic process. Immediately after the postponement of elections in February this year, Sambo Dasuki had assured Nigerians and international community that all known terrorists’ camps would be destroyed while most of the occupied communities under Boko Haram in three states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe would be liberated to allow for peaceful conduct of elections and collection of more voters cards by the electorates. “All known Boko Haram camps will be taken out. They won’t be there. They will be dismantled. In addition to the acquisition of more sophisticated armaments and training of our troops in guerrilla warfare the new military co-operation agreed to between Nigeria and its neighbours will prove decisive against Boko Haram.” http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/04/14/fg-will-rescue-chibok-girls-before-may-29-dasuki/
