South African politician, Makashule Gana, has said some of his compatriots have complained to him that they are angry with Nigerians and other immigrants because they snatched their girldfriends. Gana, a Deputy Federal Chairperson of Democratic Alliance, made this disclosure in at an anti-xenophobia rally, held at Constitution Hill. South African newspaper, City Press, reported that Gana advised that rather than get angry and take the anger out on foreigners, South African men should “provide” properly for women, rather than lash out at non-nationals for “stealing” women away. Gana urged the crowd at the rally to spread the message of not taking part in xenophobic attacks to “our wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, makhwaphenis (secret lovers), neighbours and brothers”. “If you can’t speak to a girl, now all of a sudden a man that comes from Zimbabwe or Nigeria that can speak to a girl now must be killed. What is that?” “So I ask my fellow brothers from South Africa, if you want a woman please go speak up, don’t go around and killing someone from Nigeria because they can speak up for themselves. Speak out because it is important,” he told the crowd. He also urged South Africans to look at themselves and not blame non-nationals for stealing their jobs when these jobs didn’t exist in the first place. “Go and start a spaza shop,” advised Gana. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/04/25/xenophobia-nigerian-men-are-snatching-our-wives-south-african-politician/

The Society for Family Health says more than 3.2 million Nigerians are still living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Bright Ekweremadu, the Managing Director of the society, said this on Thursday in Abuja at a forum to mark the end of Enhancing Nigeria’s Response (ENR) to HIV and AIDS programme. He solicited realistic programmes to fight the virus, insisting that with the prevalent rate, much had to be done to tackle the menace. “There have been tremendous improvements in addressing and halting the HIV and AIDS burden in Nigeria, there is still a lot to be done especially in regard to expanding access to services,” he said. According to Ekweremadu, the ENR is one of Nigeria’s largest HIV/AIDS grants. “ENR was funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) to promote sexual reproductive health and HIV reduction in Nigeria. “Its goal was to also contribute to reducing the spread of HIV epidemic and mitigating the impact of AIDS in Nigeria,” he added. He said the ENR programme was a six-year programme inaugurated in 2009 with a focus on eight high prevalence states. He said the programme will improve access to effective HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support information and services for people most vulnerable to infection. Ekweremadu thanked the DFID for funding the programme and the long standing support and partnership. In a remark, the representative of DFID, Dr Kemi Williams, said that Nigeria had the second highest prevalent rate of HIV, calling for concerted effort to check the scourge. She said that through the ENR, “comprehensive HIV knowledge increased from 45 per cent for males and 38 per cent for females by 2014.” She noted that 1.2 billion male condoms and 4 million female condoms were distributed in the six years of the programme. “These condoms with the associated health promotion and increased use prevented an estimated 109, 364 new HIV infections,” she said. Also speaking, Prof. John Idoko, Director-General, National Agency for the Control of AIDS, said with the end of the ENR programme, there was the need for government to internally fund HIV projects in the country. “Government at the centre and state level are improving the resources for tackling HIV and AIDS,” he said. NAN reports that the ENR programme was implemented by a consortium comprising Society for Family Health, ActionAid Nigeria, BBC Media Action, Population Council and Crown Agents. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/04/24/3-2m-nigerians-live-with-hiv/ |
That means PDP are filled with attack dogs, anyway better for democracy but constructive criticism is highly welcome not destructive criticism. Better still they can consult Lia Mohammed for proper training. |

A foreign embassy official on Friday in Jakarta, said on condition of anonymity that Indonesia has concluded arrangements to execute several foreign drug convicts on Saturday, including four Nigerians. The official said some diplomats of the countries of the affected convicts have been requested to travel to Nusakambangan, the prison island off Java where the inmates are to be executed. A government official also said on condition of anonymity that authorities have ordered preparations for the execution of 10 death-row inmates, including two Australians that have been the subject of a high-profile campaign for clemency. Tony Spontana, spokesman for the Attorney General’s office, confirmed that a letter, issued on Thursday by a deputy attorney general, told prosecutors to “prepare for and carry out the executions. “It’s not a letter of notification to the convicts”, he said. He said convicts are typically notified of their executions three days in advance. Spontana said the 10 inmates would all be executed at the same time. He said the other drug inmates facing execution are four from Nigeria, and one each from Indonesia, the Philippines and Brazil. Spontana said one convict, Martin Aderson, first identified by officials as Ghanaian, was actually from Nigeria. He also said the Attorney General’s office was awaiting a verdict, due Friday, on a case review request filed by the Indonesian convict, Zainal Abidin. The Australian government has repeatedly asked for clemency on behalf of its nationals Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. Peter Morrisey, a lawyer for the Australian pair, said he was concerned by the letters, as he understood the legal process was not yet over. “That looks as if the attorney general’s office is determined to press ahead and hustle through. “That’s the zone we’re in now. We haven’t got the 72-hour knock but that could be imminent’’, he added. Julian McMahon, another lawyer for the men, said the families of Sukumaran and Chan were travelling to Indonesia, and some members were already there. Meanwhile, the European Union has criticised Indonesia’s plans to execute the convicts, saying the death penalty was not a solution to the country’s growing drug problem. A French citizen, Serge Atlaoui, was among the inmates facing the firing squad. Federica Mogherini, EU Foreign Policy Chief, said the rejections in Indonesia of retrials, including in the case of a French citizen, bring closer the regrettable prospect of further executions. The governments of the Philippines, France and Brazil have also appealed to Indonesian President Joko Widodo, to show mercy and spare their respective citizens. The police have arrested a suspected fraudster, Uchenna Ugwu, for allegedly defrauding some women and later raping them. The 26-year-old indigene of Enugu State, while being paraded at the Awka, Anambra State office of the Department of State Service, confessed to the crime, adding that he raped his victims to fight boredom. It was learnt that Ugwu belonged to a syndicate, which specialised in luring ladies while pretending to be spiritualists, defrauding and raping them. Our correspondent learnt that the mode of operation of the group was to lure women into their trap and initially tricked them into disclosing their ATM PIN codes. It was learnt that if a victim refused to comply, the group would threaten to inflict a strange ailment on her based on a spiritual power they possess. PUNC H Metro gathered that having succeeded, the gang members would take their victim to an arranged prayer house, where she would be compelled to take a oath never to disclose her experience to anyone. The victim would then be raped on the pretext of making a charm for her. Our correspondent learnt that that was how Ugwu and his group operated in Asaba, Delta State, and Obosi, in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State for a long time, before luck ran out on Ugwu. He was arrested by the DSS based on petitions from some of the victims. Ugwu, who said he stopped his education at primary six due to financial constraint, said he turned to crime to survive. He said, “I joined this business to fight boredom because my former work was not going on fine and had shut down. “My parents, who are still alive, are poor and because they cannot sponsor my education, I had to stop at primary six.” Ugwu, while begging for forgiveness, said he was a changed man. “I have suffered a lot in the hands of these people (DSS) and I promise not to indulge in this act again in my life; this is a lesson to every young man that doing evil is not the best,” he said. A lady, who said she was a victim, told PUNCH Metro she believed she was hypnotised. She said, “I believe he used a charm on me. He told me if anybody heard about what happened, I would not live to tell the story. “To be sincere, I did not know what I was doing. I lost my sense of reasoning during the process until after he raped me.” The Director of DSS, Alex Okeiyi, said the antics of the hoodlums were many, warning members of the public, especially females, to be cautious. Okeiyi said, “It is noteworthy that since agencies in the state with the support of the government kept kidnappers and armed robbers in check, undesirable elements resorted to fraudulent practices including rape.” http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/i-rape-women-to-fight-boredom-suspect/ |

* Bola Tinubu alliance helped Buhari win presidential poll * Ex-Lagos governor now one of the most powerful godfathers * Seen as favouring technocrats who can solve problems By Tim Cocks LAGOS, April 22 (Reuters) - "I am a talent hunter. I put talents in office, I help them," says former Lagos state governor and opposition alliance leader Bola Tinubu, being quite open about his role as one of Nigeria's most powerful political godfathers. "I use the best hand, the best brain, the best experience for the job," he told Reuters after voting this month in a governorship election in Nigeria's economic capital which, as expected, his hand picked candidate Akinwunmi Ambode won. But it isn't only in his traditional fiefdom in the ethnic Yoruba southwest that Tinubu has sought to be a kingmaker. His support for former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari was seen as a key factor in the latter's win against President Goodluck Jonathan in the March 28 presidential election in Africa's biggest economy and oil producer. The pro-Buhari alliance that Tinubu headed, the All Progressives Congress (APC), rallied elites around Buhari in the southwest, Nigeria's wealthiest region. That enabled Buhari to tackle a perception that his support lies only in the dust-blown, largely Muslim north. The religiously mixed southwest had voted overwhelmingly for Jonathan in the 2011 race. So 'The Jagaban', an honorific title beloved of Tinubu's supporters, could have much say in what reform policies the new government will focus on, and who fills which cabinet posts. "The party he led is half of the APC. He can ... lay claim to that power," said Clement Nwankwo of the Situation Room civil society group. "Buhari will feel (an) ... obligation to him." To supporters Tinubu, a Yoruba Muslim, is a wily political operator with a passion for getting the job done and a knack for picking bright, committed technocrats to do it. To critics he is a ruthless godfather who doles out lucrative contracts to his friends' firms, insists on installing his man in office and is capable of sending in street thugs if he fails to get his way. The APC, which came to power on anger over corruption and growing insecurity, has declined to speak publicly about policies. THE JAGABAN The Nigerian practice of political godfathering has long been criticised by rights campaigners as impeding democracy by enabling powerful oligarchs to capture state institutions. But few deny that in Lagos, at least, the former governor managed to fix things no one thought fixable. Under his tenure at the turn of the millennium and that of his successor Babatunde Fashola, a technocrat hand picked by Tinubu, the city scrubbed up dramatically. Trash got collected, crime fell, trees were planted and traffic was better managed. "There were refuse mountains around, tax collection was very low," recalls Folarin Gbadebo- Smith, a former council leader under Tinubu. "But very quickly he seemed to sort things out." Gbadebo-Smith noticed an advantage Tinubu has over other Nigerian "big men" is that you could disagree with him and he listened, changing his mind when faced with a good argument. He also sets high standards, says Lagos waste management head Ola Oresanya, to whom Tinubu gave three months to make a noticeable difference or be fired. "He likes to say 'I promised I would do this, and I have.'" But like other powerful political figures in Nigeria, Tinubu's power resides largely in the huge patronage he wields, which has given him influence over, for instance, the 'area boys' -- Lagos street toughs who run rackets and guard cars. Ingeniously, he gave some of them uniforms and turned them into traffic cops. After he voted on April 11, a group of area boys mobbed The Jagaban, and he lectured them on their disorderly behaviour. "If you want me to do something for you, line up in an orderly manner. Then I can share my peanuts," he told them, adding: "some of you have not even voted." A day later, when celebrations erupted outside his home, two groups of area boys got into a fight over money that had been distributed and they began hitting each other with planks of wood, a Reuters reporter saw. But interviewed later, many of them said they loved Tinubu since "he's a man of the common people." A businessman close to him says although Tinubu runs a formidable business empire, he is often short of cash because he gives so much away to oil the wheels of patronage. Yet Tinubu may have less influence over Buhari than he had hoped, argues Kayode Akindele, CEO of consultancy 46 Parallels. "He didn't really deliver in the southwest. It was only a slight lead," he said, compared to the absolute thumping Jonathan received from voters in the largely Muslim north. "The APC, post-elections, is now very northern," he added. That could limit any influence The Jagaban has -- and replicate the north-south rivalry that divided Jonathan's outgoing party.
