Greetings Medicos and Aspirants in the house,

I scored 80/100 ... Aggregate 75% ... I applied for medicine and surgery UNIBEN what are my chances, and

What's the Quota for medicine in Uniben, I heard it has increased to 150?
Hello, congratulations on your score. From what I've heard, this year's cutoff is 75. So you stand a great chance especially if you are from catchment. Just keep praying. Hope to have you onboard UnibenMED.

overpopulation will always be a problem in med school. I guess UNN will not learn until they lose accreditation like uniport did in 2011 then they had to stop admitting for 2 yrs. Today the class that started after the 2 years hiatus is not upto 70 with good class experience and hands on clinical experience due to lower population. So UNN should beware what they are getting into.

Used to be same story here in Uniben until they lost accreditation in 2008 or thereabouts... Unn should just beware! it's like they are tired of the precise 6 years they spend for their medical training. They lose accreditation and it becomes 7 like Uniben and Uniport, not to mention the external delays.

Dr Drajjay, it's been a while.. you must be in your finals now

Yes. They admitted too much plus those that transferred from other departments to medicine and dentistry. Even pharmacy is facing that issue. When i was in 2nd year, my friend in biological sciences transferred to pharmacy and they were almost 498+ and they can't graduate more than 180. So they will make the rules strict and drop so many people on the way.
Med school now is one attempt or you leave. They are also looking at increasing pass mark to 60. Maybe they have implementated that one sef.

I can not only but imagine the intense and profuse jacking they do there.. BTW, MDCN and NUC should look into this. For crying out loud, this is sheer callousness... 60 as pass mark

You should your school,MB policy

Like in UNN the former policy was that if you fail 1 or 2 you CAN resit the two exams in September,if you fail them again, you are leaving med school.

Now,it is only one attempt,if you fail one or two you are leaving automatically,no more resit in UNN

Haa!!! . You guys are in oven na!

Thanks my boss. People need to know this. Guys are wasting precious years at home chasing what are only fantasies. I wasted 2 years of my life (well i became more sensible during that period) chasing "Big Schools" just because I couldn't bring myself to apply to another school when Fed. Unis weren't working out. If you get admitted to study in fed uni, I swear good for you, but what you need to know is that there is no advantage whatsoever apart from maybe lesser school fee and few months hype which will soon clear from one's eyes when you enter and see the stress you are in. All in all, each Nigerian unis whether state or federal have their own problems. About EBSU, i think it is about to get shot into the top 5 medical schools list in this country with the hospital they are building. The new Teaching Hospital is maddddddd.
Ebsuth is really doing wonders from what I've heard..
.
.
UNN should just up their game abeg! they're really jeopardizing medical education in this country ; all for the love of money! Schools like OOU and EBSU are beginning to outshine not just UNN but other federal unis as well...
Jambitos should therefore be wise now and choose wisely. Don't stay at home all in the name of going to a fed school. If you have the wherewithal and means for state uni, then go. The school you attend is not the badge for your career success!

PS: Been a while here

Donpre:

okay here are my recommendations
Anatomy: Read Gray's at first, then switch to vishram later on when you start understanding anatomy

Physiology: I would always recommend sembumlingam and Guyton combo for a start... later on for CVS, GIT and other systems, Linda Constanzo physiology(Simple, concise yet stuffy and easy to repeat multiple times). you can combine with Ganong for extra stuff
Sembumlingam is very useful when preparing for essay exams.

Biochemistry: Essentials by Naik, sometimes I play around with chatterjea and Vasudevan but Essentials remains my default

Histo: Junqueria, then BRS afterwards(BRS is 400pages of just bullet points, currently revising Histo with it and it's been just pure joy)

Embryo: vishram singh embryology

Las Las I would say you speak to senior colleagues in your school and hear what your lecturers use.
Also, my recommendations might not work for you, so experiment with those books yourself, you won't get past chapter 1 before saying "Hell no, this is not for me"

Good luck and Godspeed
thanks also.. Vishram Singh embryology, how many pages is it? you're in 300L right?

Although am just also starting my pre clinicals but when I saw Straight and concise text then I couldn't help but to give you a few suggestions as I was also Stranded on this part.

So For Gross Anatomy, I recommend you start with Vishram Singh, For me I started by opening last Anatomy, and straight up I started disliking Anatomy as last Wasn't so explanatory As I had wanted, So I skipped it and went For Keith Moore, although this was a little bit friendly, It was so voluminous, and since you said you don't like volume, I won't push you there, but when I opened Vishram Singh textbook on Anatomy, I started seeing clear waters, so for Gross anatomy, with Extra concise and straight to the point, I'll recommend Vishram Singh. I although it's no Harm if you combine Vishram with Keith Moore, as Keith Moore got real cool Diagrams and Clinical correlation(Blue box).

For Physiology, Although sembuligam seems to Be the best pick for most of us due to the fact that's it's just bullet point without much history and all that, I'll still prefer You go with Guyton and hall because Guyton is So user friendly and Way more Explanatory.. I'll say u start with Guyton first then mayb later switch to sembuligam when preparing for MB...although i still find comprehensive physiology Sweet to my eyes. So once again I can do some combo here. Guyton x comprehensive or Sembuligam x comprehensive.

For BCH, Well I won't say much on this cause I haven't decided yet, I started with vasudevan as that is the most common in my school, But Essential Biochemistry by Naik seems to be more Explanatory to me than vasudevan, chattegea also Makes more sense to me than vasudevan, but the book has some so to say unessential details.. So for consiceness just go with Vasudevan ND make a combo by adding Lecture notes and Essential.

For Histo, Indebir Singh got my Vote here, although Junqueira Should be the best book for histo to me, but I just somehow like Indebir more because of its conciseness.. Am not sure Ave seen Vasudevan histo before, And wheaters Histo is also cool.. So for combo sake, just go with Indebir Singh ND Wheaters, but don't neglect Junqueira, that book got some good stuff..

PS: it's just my recommendation based on your requirements, It might not suit you like it is for me.. Actually the best way to select text is by Doing a quick experiment on them all to ascertain the one that suits you best, recommendation from a colleague sometime might not work.
thanks for your input bro... a senior gave me Ganong and I'm kinda enjoying it for physiology..

Good Afternoon FAM! Its TESTIMONY TIME!!! It's with grateful heart, I write to tell everyone that I've been ADMITTED to study Medicine & Surgery.
I did not get this MBBS at my very first attempt, in fact I wasn't offered anything with my supposed good score. I refused to be deterred, I picked myself up and tried UTME again. At the second attempt, I was served with Microbiology instead of my Medicine. I cried and at the same time was left with no choice than to accept it for fear of ridicule that will come with me sitting at home doing nothing. That was when I stumbled upon this thread.
Mother used to tell me that 'achieving one's goals are the perks of life - we shouldn't give up because we did not get it the first time'. On my final lap as an undergraduate of Microbiology, I picked another UTME form which was JAMB 2019. I really did not have enough time to study, I dabbled between reading for my school exams and preparing for UTME.
At some point, I agreed that my decision was a stupid one, I won't give up on my dream and at the same time, my preparations seems not enough. I tried harder and today I can boldly say my preparations did not go down the drain. Today, I write to tell you that for my Second Degree, I'll be resuming come January 6 for my Medical Education at Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto.
To all the Student Doctors here and the Doctors whose success stories above have helped us remain motivated - I say Thank You. You all are the real MVPs. The list is endless but believe me, I can't thank you all.
Salam.
Big congratulations to you bro... I wish to congratulate everyone who has been admitted into MBBS/BDS most especially DrAuthentic, Horpeyemi, Acecube et al.. you guys won the good fight of faith. I wish u all a safe flight through med sch.....

OK.... with 100l done and dusted, and preclinicals in sight, guys I need your help... confused on the texts to use for MB... pls u guys should recommend straight and concise texts for anatomy, physiology and biochemistry for a beginner like me... also don't know which is better:

Anatomy: Keith Moore vs Last vs Greys
Physiology: Guyton vs Ganong vs Sembulingam
Biochemistry: Vasudevan vs chatterjea
Histology: Junqueira vs Vasudevan vs Wheaters

PS: I'm the type that don't really like voluminous books cos I like repetitive reading..
Thanks In anticipation, your boy is ever loyal..

TESTIMONY TIME !!!!!!!!!!

I want to use this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone here especially Dr lagusta and other pioneer Bosses who kick-started this thread.

I had given up on studying medicine after staying back home for almost 5 yrs due to financial issues.

I visited Nairaland once in a while but never discovered this thread until last year, accidentally even.

I had just finished 100l in a biological course after getting admission in 2017 when things turned a corner for us financially.

I was generally unhappy with my life and was bordering on acute depression back then, until I saw myself here unintentionally.

The posts I came across here and the diaries that I read( and still following) lit a fire under my belly and I started believing that i could really pull this off inspite of me being a shadow of my Secondary school self academically.

I decided to give it my last shot and by the grace of God and with the help of most people here(bulk of them unknowingly) I am now a fresh medical student in Enugu State University (Esut) by Merit.

I will forever remain grateful to God and my Messiahs here.

Special mention goes to:
Lagusta
lomaxx
Starfx
Elzak
jargo89
Mandeyy

And many others( can't remember all their monikers), in fact everyone here played a pivotal role in my success, even those I kinda ruffled with, I learned from all of it and will make sure I put all I've learnt here to great use.

PS: I have a new account now (Medicblaze), this should my last post with this very one.
Clean slate.

Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

God bless you All.

A big congratulations chief, welcome on board

How Uniben calculate the aggregate of jamb pume and waec to give admission.

Their were a lot of fluctuations in my jamb center hence I could no do to well so I got 260 but I am confident of doing better in the putme.

So please students of Uniben, what is the formulae for their aggregate score.
I need to know to set a target for my PUME
Agg=77 for last year
Mode of calculation=utme/8+putme/2

Hi, first of all, congratulations on your jamb score. I'm in UnibenMed 100l and I can assure you it's been good so far. Now on your score, it all boils down to your putme score. All you have to do is score above 84+. Yeah it's possible cos I know a person currently in my class who had 279 in jamb and blasted putme scoring 85 which gave him his admission.
Hope you know last year's cutoff was 77 and if you're not from Uniben's catchment, you should target 78+ to be guaranteed admission... Once again congrats and I hope to have you onboard Uniben med school. Have a nice day..

Happy New Year medics. Permission to dare to open my mouth(fingers) to speak(type).

We just created a group on WhatsApp exclusively for NEWLY ADMITTED MEDICS, i.e., 2018/2019 freshers accross all institutions.

The idea is to create a level platform for everyone to share experiences, ideas, rub minds, materials, etc. along the way, understand what's being done in other Colleges so as to not be limited to the 'four walls' of individuals' institutions alone.

It is not for undue comparison or competition, but to challenge and keep you on your toes, understand how others are tackling similar challenges in other places......

Too much talk, sorry. I'm sure you get the idea.

So, please, if you're a 2018/2019 FRESH MEDIC, just resuming 100L, and are interested, you can mail me or Chukwukapromise and you'll be added to the group. It's started already, and it's growing, and we want to keep it alive till, by God's grace, we take the 'OATH'....and maybe beyond.....).
