Politics / Count Sen. Effiong Bob Out Of Your Misfortune, Ubium North Youth Warns Selfish P by drinoayo: 12:19pm On Aug 15, 2020
Count Sen. Effiong Bob Out Of Your Misfortune, Ubium North Youth Warns Selfish Politicians

The Youths of Ubium North under the auspices of Ubium North Youth Forum has warned selfish politicians from Ubium South political zone in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State not to use the name of Senator Effiong Bob as escape route on their misfortune which they are facing as a result of their selfish motive, Igbere TV reports.

This was contained in a communique jointly signed by thirty delegates of the area after the general congress of the forum on Thursday.

Part of the Communique reads: "We have observed with dismay that each time there is a political miscalculation on the part of the people of Ubium South, they blame their misfortune on the people of Ubium North. This is no longer acceptable to us.

"The recent case where stakeholders of Nsit Ubium Local Government Area at the Caucus meeting decided to zone the chairmanship position of the Local Government Council to Nsit based on party directives only for the people of Ubium South to blame it on Senator Effiong Bob calls for serious concern.

" Our findings show that they were advised to put their house in order but they refused due to selfish ambition, we have it on good authority that before the meeting of August 3, 2020 leaders of Ubium South met with Senator Bob and the position of the party was put across to them together with the reasons for the decision and they all accepted to what was put forward. It is therefore not acceptable to us on their passing of the buck.

"Perhaps, they realized that they had failed as leaders but not wanting to take responsibility for their failures, they sought their escape route. Senator Effiong Bob is certainly not going to be their escape route this time around.

" The people of Ubium South should rise up and ask their leaders how they messed up their chances. As far as we are concerned, it is a failure leadership occasioned by selfish considerations.

"If their leaders failed to tell them the truth because they had failed on their responsibility as leaders but chose to pursue selfish consideration we wish to inform them that they were part of the decision. If they have changed their mind now, well, the deed has been done.

“The zoning of political office has never been a one-man affair. We called on the Leaders of Ubium South to leave Senator Effiong Bob alone as we the youth of Ubium North will no longer tolerate a situation where the failure of Ubium South is blame on our leaders".

Politics / Enugu Airport Fence Destruction: FG Vows To Prosecute Perpetrator (photos) by drinoayo: 5:55pm On Aug 13, 2020
*Says it will deploy all lawful means to protect national security asset

*Aviation Minister applauds Buhari, Ugwuanyi’s intervention

The federal government, on Thursday, vowed to apply all lawful means to prosecute one Arch. John J. Emejulu, who was responsible for the destruction of the concrete perimeter fence, covering about 2km, being erected at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, as part of the ongoing rehabilitation of the airport, Igbere TV reports.

Speaking to newsmen after inspecting the site to ascertain the level of destruction, the Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, expressed deep sadness that the perpetrator could take such an unlawful act by destroying a “national security asset”, at a time the federal government was in the course of delivering the Enugu airport, on August 30, as promised.

Narrating what transpired, Sirika disclosed that “while the procurement (of the Enugu airport rehabilitation) was going on, a certain cantankerous individual by name Arch. J.J. Emejulu came with bulldozers and hundreds of armed thugs and destroyed more than 2km of our fence”.

The Minister, who described the action as unfortunate, unbecoming and unacceptable, said that “he (Emejulu) has given the government the opportunity to show how not to willfully destroy public asset belonging to over 200 million people”.

While reiterating the commitment of the federal government to the reopening of the Enugu airport on August 30, as earlier promised, Sirika, expressed dismay that in spite of the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari, to bring the airport back to its glory, with the nation’s limited resources and “at this very austere time”, to contribute to trade and commerce as well as guarantee safety of air travelers, “a certain cantankerous individual appeared from nowhere with bulldozers and destroyed this national security asset”, Igbere TV reports.

“It is a wrong time to test our resolve. The individual will certainly be dealt with maximally without recourse. I am sure he will regret doing this and of course this is also an opportunity for government to show that no one can take the law into his hands and willfully destroy national asset belonging to 200 million of all of us.

“This will certainly be the end of this kind of recklessness. We will not forgive him. The Chief of Air Staff, the Inspector General of Police, the Director General, DSS, others, will be directed to do the needful and bring him to book, so that anybody who would contemplate doing something like this in future will have a rethink.

“We are government in place; we are not a lawless country; we are not in a banana republic, we are in the Federal Republic of Nigeria governed by laws. Certainly, this is not acceptable and I am sure that we are equal to the task of rising in defence of our national asset”, the Minister maintained.

Sirika who thanked President Buhari “for his wisdom to allow this procurement to continue by providing the money, also appreciated the South East Governors especially Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who he said “has helped us in this procurement and has responded to all our requests for the actualization of this laudable project”.

He noted that Gov. Ugwuanyi visited the site of the destroyed fence earlier and was at the airport to meet with him over the matter, stressing that it shows his level of commitment to the realization of the Enugu airport project.

Also on the inspection tour were the Air Officer Commanding Ground Training Command, NAF, Enugu, Air Vice Marshal Idi Amin, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Capt. Hamisu Rabiu Yadudu, the Enugu Airport Manager, Member representing Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency, Hon. Prince Cornelius Nnaji, Mrs. Cecilia Oguama, the Chairman, South East Governors’ Forum Airport Rehabilitation/Palliative Works Committee, Engr. Chris Okoye, the Enugu State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji, his Information counterpart, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, and the Chairman, Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, Dr. Josef Umunnakwe Onoh, among others.

Politics / UK-Based Nigerian Lady Recounts How She Became Obasanjo’s Self-Appointed PA by drinoayo: 1:53pm On Aug 13, 2020
A woman Aminat Sule has narrated how she became the self-appointed personal assistant of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in London, UK.

Sule wrote in a thread on Wednesday that she had set a goal for herself to become Nigeria’s youngest first female foreign affairs minister.

She said that shortly after her show stopped airing on national television due to lack of funds, a colleague identified as Dayo Okewale informed her of an event hosted by Chatham House called ‘Re-Writing Politics to Africa’s Advantage’.

Obasanjo was the only Nigerian among five panellists for the event in June 2019 which included a Zimbabwean and a Guinean.

“I was determined to serve one of the greatest leaders in Africa. So I positioned myself front row. I sat in the seat reserved for a The Sunday Times journalist – my apologies your correspondent arrived late,” Sule wrote.

“I made eye contact with Mr Olusegun the entire event. From start to finish. Once the event was over. Guests and fellow panelists wanted to take pictures and engage with Pres. Obasanjo.

“I stormed onto the stage and said, excuse me: ‘No more pictures! Can we get him into a private room, with a glass of water? In 10 minutes he’ll resume to discuss matters and entertain the press.’

“He followed me & when we got into the room he asked: ‘Whose daughter are you?’

“I responded ‘My father isn’t anyone you know. He’s Just a normal Nigerian citizen who relocated to the UK for a better life.’

“He chuckled and said ‘So how can I help you?’ I said ‘Well I’m your new PA. I’m going to serve you.’ I’ve been serving him since that date.”

Sule said her story teaches that sometimes one has to create opportunities as they might not always come.

She also encouraged the public to read Obasanjo’s book My Watch published in 2014.

In the open letter posted on his Facebook page, Chikamnayo alleged that Abia state Governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu had converted a government property (Land) for private use for his wife without due process.

He had also alleged that contracts awarded by the governor were over inflated and numerous other allegations.

Read the full screen below;

The Sergeant-At-Arms ushered in the next nominee, Barr Eze Chikamanayo, Transition Committee Chairman nominee for Umunneochi Local Government Area.

The Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly asked the Nominee to introduce himself which he did, his Immediate Representative Hon Okey IGWE who was not Present during Plenary, however detailed the Lawmaker Representing Umuahia South State Constituency Hon.Bart Jerry Uzosike to present the Nominee for Screening.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt.Hon Ifeanyi Uchendu in his question to the nominee asked whether there was any legal backing on the attachment of “David”in the Nominee’s name since some of his documents bear just Eze Chikamnayo without the David.

The Nominee said David has been there as his name for so many Years.

The Lawmaker Representing Bende North State Constituency Hon.Chukwu Chijioke sort the explanations of the Nominee over some of Open Letters he has Published against the Governor and the Speaker.

In his Defence, the Nominee said…

“Rt Hon Engr Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji is my Leader. Whether he is competent to preside over my screening, the answer is YES. I will prefer him to any other person.

“At no time did I question his competence, he is more than competent”, he said.

In response to a question, the nominee denied that he was ever rusticated at the Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU).

The Member representing Isialangwa South State Constituency, Rt. Hon.Chikwendu Kalu, asked the nominee how he will bring his experience to bear in Umunneochi as a Serial Public Servant, the Nominee said he will definitely make his years in public service count positively for the people of umunneochi if he assumes office.

Hon Ginger Onwusibe, member Representing Isialangwa North State Constituency observed that there was no NYSC Certificate in the Curriculum Vitae presented by the nominee.

The nominee said he applied for his NYSC certificate but that the Coronavirus pandemic has delayed its processing till date.

Hon Ginger Onwusibe further asked the nominee if he ever wrote any Open Letter to the Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, where he (the nominee) made serious allegations against the Governor.

The Lawmaker presented an evidence of one of the open letters containing the allegations the nominee wrote against the Governor.

“I don’t know the conscience you had, a man that you have embarrassed openly, you want to serve under him?”, the Lawmaker queried.

The nominee in his response said he could not remember the particular words he used in his Open Letters against the Governor, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, his Wife and the Government of Abia State.

The Speaker asked the nominee if he ever apologized to the Governor over such Open Letters.

“Even if am a prodigal son, I became a son before becoming prodigal”, the nominee responded.

Hon Barr Emeka Okoroafor, member representing Isuikwuato State Constituency in his submission said if the nominee was allowed to scale through the Abia State House of Assembly screening, he might still not change his ways.

“If I was in your shoes, I would have rejected the nomination in the first place”, he thundered.

“Were you nominated in order for you to shut your mouth in all the allegations you have raised” the lawmaker asked.

The Nominee answered, NO.

The Leader of the House, Hon Solomon Akpulonu, read out another one of the Open Letters written by the nominee making another round of allegations against the Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, The Speaker, Rt. Hon.Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji and Senator Theodore Orji.

The nominee, Barr Eze Chikamanayo, said he may need to check back on his record to ascertain if the allegations he made against the trio were true.

“These allegations that you have made, did you verify them to be correct before putting them in public domain? The Leader asked.

“I did not authenticate them, I have not investigated them” Chikamnayo responded.

The Transition Committee Chairman nominee however said he will never disrespect the Abia State House of Assembly, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon.Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, as according to him, the House is a respected institution.

The Member representing Aba South State Constituency, Hon. Obinna Ichita, said the nominee was not stable in his submissions before the Honourable Lawmakers of the Abia State House of Assembly.

“Is it not a mark of you not being stable when you write something in public, you come in private to say another thing?” Honourable Ichita queried.

In his response, the nominee said there were prevailing circumstances that made him to make such statements in his open letters.

“I did not write in isolation, I hold the Speaker in high esteem”, he said.

The Speaker, Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, pleaded with the Lawmakers not to go emotional with the matter. He reminded his Honourable Colleagues that the screening exercise was a business of the House and that no one should be personal about it.

The Speaker in his question to the nominee asked why he didn’t reach him to get his own side of the story before going public with his Open Letter. On the nominee’s statement that he didn’t act in isolation, the nominee said he was prompted to attack the Speaker over what he saw in materials being circulated.

The Speaker in his summary said what has happened today is the irony of life.

“If somebody had told you one month ago, that you will be standing before the man you so maligned for your l screening, you wouldn’t have believed it, but that is the irony of life”, the Speaker said.

The House later confirmed the nomination of Barr Tony Nwamuo and Rejected the Nomination of Barr Eze Chikamanayo.

His rejection follows his inability to secure a single vote in the House of Assembly.

The House subsequently adjourned sitting till 24th of August, 2020, at 10am.

Politics / Onyeagba Applauds Abia Assembly Over Rejection Of Chikamnayo As TC Chairman by drinoayo: 11:47am On Aug 12, 2020
An Aba-based businessman, Mr. Ifeanyi Onyeagba, has applauded the Abia State House of Assembly for rejecting Barr. Eze Chikamnayo as Transition Committee chairman nominee.

Igbere TV had reported that the Abia State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, rejected the nomination of Chikamnayo as chairman of Umuneochi local government council.

This followed a weighty petition against the transition council chairman nominee by Onyeagba, where he accused him of fraud running into millions.

In a letter addressed to the Abia Assembly, Onyeagba accused Chikamnayo of defrauding him, saying he would cause mayhem to the Council if confirmed.

He had copied the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Commissioner Of Police, Abia State and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State in the petition.

The petition entitled, “Obtaining By False Pretence By A Man Of Questionable Character In Re: Mr. Eze Chikamnayo” reads;

“I write to notify you that Mr. Eze Chikamnayo whose name has been submitted to the Abia State House of Assembly to be confirmed as a transition Chairman of one of the Local Governments in Abia State, will cause mayhem to the Local Government as Mr. Eze Chikamnayo is a man of questionable character.

“Mr. Eze Chikamnayo defrauded me the sum of N1,200.000.00 (one million, two hundred thousand naira) on the pretext of buying musical equipment which I supplied to him.

“And after Mr. Eze Chikamnayo gave me cheques from First City Monument Bank with Cheques NOS:
(1) 120 18525 dated 21/6/2015
(2) 120 18522 dated 5/5/2015
(3) 120 18523 dated 21/5/2015
(4) 120 18526 dated 7/7/2015

“That Mr. Eze Chikamnayo knew that was no money in his account at the times of giving me the cheques, but told me to go and cash cheques, exhibiting his fraudulent intents.

“That the cheques were not cleared and all efforts made for Mr. Eze Chikamnayo to pay me remained abortive, grooving in his normal character that I have been defrauded hence should not disturb him again.

“It is my candid position that a person in the character of Mr. Eze Chikamnayo will be a clog to good governance in Abia State, especially now that the executive Governor of Abia State is curbing the state of corrupt political office holders to ensure that the dignity of Abia State is restored.

“It is my fervent position for you to consider this petition in the interest of all Abians.”

Politics / OUK: That Which Was Only A Mere Possibility Has Become A Fait Accompli by drinoayo: 5:31pm On Aug 11, 2020
By Dr. Johnson Greg

Instinctively, one should sense that Senator Orji Uzor Kalu was going to be the decisive factor in the choice of the next president for Nigeria. There are certain culmination of forces that shape and control the affairs and destinies of men.

One could see the stars lined up in favor of OUK. That which was thinkable only on the outer margins of human imagination not long ago became a distinct possibility within months.

Yes, on December 5, 2019, OUK was convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison. It was a day that will live in infamy. Everybody thought that OUK was finished once and forever.

Six months and 3 days later, the tide of destiny turned in his favor. Now look at what has happened within three months of the unanimous Nigerian Supreme Court judgment.

That which was unthinkable in December 2019 became a possibility in May 2020. And in August, it has become a fait accompli. That is if you understand what is happening all over the country, particularly in the East right now.

There has been a massive realignment of forces, all galvanizing behind OUK as the leader of choice. The churches, the politicians, market women and trade associations, traditional rulers, youth organizations rally behind OUK. Entire political structures are being dismantled and realigned behind him.

Some may still not understand why OUK would have such appeal at this time. It is not about the man per se.

It is more about the compelling story of the indefatigability of the human spirit. It is about the story of triumph of justice over injustice. If William Shakespeare were alive today, OUK's story will have inspired a play by Shakespeare and such book will be about the unseen hands of destiny that shape the affairs of men.

Today, OUK is no longer just a man. He is no longer just one person. He is becoming a movement and an inspiration. The story of OUK tells you this: whatever challenges you may face, however much man may castigate you, however dark the day may look; don't panic, don't fear, hold firm to your principles, God is in charge.

For every great story, everybody is involved. So we are all involved in OUK's story. Even for a person, who vigorously opposes him today, such a person is deeply involved in OUK's story.

Whether you like it or not, OUK is an indisputable Nigerian phenomenon, a direct product of the unique Nigerian circumstance. If you are a good student of history, you will be familiar with the factors that characterize moments of social transitions. OUK could be a bridge.

That's is the plan of those of us who support him. Every bridge must have to traverse the river. You must expect every bridge to start from one bank of the river and touch the other bank.

As a bridge, OUK must be part of the past and part of the future. He must end the past politics of disunity and start and start the new politics of reconciliation, justice and development.

Judging him harshly for being part of the past will be a terrible mistake. OUK had to be part of the past political establishment in order to act as a bridge across to the new era. He will be the last and first of two political orders in Nigerian history.

Two things make OUK's presidency inevitable. First, Nigeria must allow now an Igbo president. Failure to do that will amount to missing the last boat.

To not end the civil war through the gesture of an Igbo presidency now is to continue that war.

Secondly, if presidency is zoned to the East, the successful Igbo candidate must be one that enjoys the widest support of non-Igbos, particularly the North.

It is precisely on this calculus that Orji Uzor Kalu's presidency in 2023 is considered as inevitable, an unstoppable thrust, and a fait accompli.

Politics / Hoodlums Attack Imo Retirees During Protest Against Unpaid Pensions (photos) by drinoayo: 9:51am On Aug 05, 2020
Some suspected hoodlums on Tuesday, August 4 allegedly attacked protesting pensioners at the Imo government house, Igbere TV reports.

The pensioners were attacked after they approached the Government House main gate.

The thugs who were later dispersed by a detachment of police operatives reportedly flogged the pensioners, leaving them sobbing and shouting.

According to report, the senior citizens fought back the attackers as some of their members particularly women sustained some injuries.

Speaking on the attack, one of the pensioners who identified himself as Dr. Ebenezer Ibekwe accused the state government of hiring thugs to disrupt their protest over unpaid pensions.

He said; “How can you owe an old man like me and declare him a ghost pensioner and still don’t want me to demand my entitlements? Already, they detained our leaders using the DSS. The thugs they hired were flogging pensioners with canes because we said we are not ghost pensioners as they are tagging us”.

Reacting on the attack during a call with IGBERE TV, the senior special assistant to Governor Hope Uzodimma on print media, Modestus Nwamkpa denied allegation of the state government sending thugs to flog the pensioners.

He also described the protest as an illegal one.

He said; “Government has discovered that most of the protesters are not pensioners but members of the opposition being used to discredit the performances of the Hope Uzodimma administration in the state.”

Politics / COVID-19: Prof Ibe Distributes More Palliatives To The Abians (photos) by drinoayo: 9:55am On Jul 20, 2020
Prof Gregory Ibe Foundation(PGIF) has successfully concluded another round of the second phase of palliative distribution exercise, Igbere TV reports.

The one-week distribution exercise was flagged off on Monday, July 13, 2020 by the Chancellor and Founder of Gregory University Uturu, Prof Gregory Ibe, who was represented by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Augustine Uwakwe.

Delivering an opening speech during the ceremony, the chairman of Prof Gregory Ibe Foundation(PGIF), Hon. Prince Emeka Okafor, stated that the palliative distribution is targeted at the less privileged members of the society.

He therefore charged representatives of the Local Government Councils and other invited organisations to ensure effective transmission of the palliatives to the needy members of the groups they represent irrespective of their social, religious, tribal or political leanings.

He retariated that as a non-partisan organisation, Prof Gregory Ibe Foundation was established "to cater for the well-being of all members of the society without recourse to their political or tribal affiliations", emphasising that their interventions are usually targeted at improving the lives of the less privileged members of the society.

The Coordinator of the PGIF second phase palliative distribution exercise, Surveyor Eze Ibe Aja stated that Prof Gregory Ibe initiated the second phase of the palliative distribution exercise due to the lingering effects of the pandemic, arising from his concern for the well-being of the poor masses in the face of the hardship caused by the global scourge.

He therefore enjoined LGA Ambassadors of Abia Crusaders, Council Ward representatives, Leaders and other group representatives to "distribute the items judiciously and equitably, no matter the quantity, ensuring that each needy Abian receives something".

Representatives of Abia chapters of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) , Online Media Practitioners of Nigeria (OMPAN),and Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) were joined by ward leaders from Umunneochi and Isuikwuato Local Government Councils in witnessing and partaking in the formal flag-off ceremony.

Sequel to the official flag-off, the palliative materials were subsequently taken to the people at their different wards through various Local Government Councils.

This exercise was done through the despatch of delegations of Prof Gregory Ibe Foundation to different Local Government Councils, on scheduled days to interact with the ward residents.

Thus deploying members of Abia Crusaders Organisation, the local arm of Prof Gregory Ibe Foundation, the palliative materials made up of bags of rice, beans, garri, salt, cartons of noodles and tubers of yam were distributed to residents of the 184 wards in the state.

Welcoming the delegation to Ugwunabor Local Government Council, the Transition Committee Chairman, Hon. Peter Aguwamba, thanked Prof. Gregory Ibe for the kind gesture.

He applauded him for having the welfare of the less privileged members of Abia society at heart which led him to undertake a second phase of palliative distribution after executing a resounding first phase.

In his own remarks, the Chairman of Ugwunabor Stakeholders Forum, Hon. Chinwe Nwanganga, thanked Prof Ibe for remembering Ugwunabor people in particular and the entire citizens of Abia State at large with his '' charity and peculiar act of benevolence".

He reassured the team that the items received will subsequently be delivered to the targeted indigent members of the Local Government Council, who according to him, need it the most.

Receiving the team in Ukwa West, the PGIF Ambassador for Ukwa West Local Government Area, Hon. Uche Enyioko, stated that Abia State is blessed to have a son like Prof. Gregory Ibe, who is "constantly touched by the plight of the needy" , and thanked the Chancellor for initiating what he termed as "Kitchen Palliative."

Hon Enyioko further stated that representatives of the ten wards that make up the local government council were present to receive the items on behalf of the indigenes of the LGA.

At Umuahia South LGA,the PGIF delegation was received by a representative of Abia Crusaders in the area, Chief Ambrose Emezue. Speaking after receiving the palliative materials, Chief Emezue described Prof Ibe as "too benevolent and filled with a large tank of overflowing milk of kindness''.

He lauded the initiative of the second phase of palliative distribution as a follow up to the largely successful premiere edition.

Correspondents report that apart from Umunneochi and Isuikwuato Local Government Councils who had the fortune of receiving their palliatives during the flag off ceremony, the remaining 15 LGAs were served their quota at their bases, as delegations of the Prof Gregory Ibe Foundation came calling, while arrangements are being concluded to extend the exercise to churches, markets and charity homes in Abia state.

Politics / PAGMI: All You Need To Know About The Gold Purchase Programme by drinoayo: 3:45pm On Jul 16, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari launched the Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Development Initiative (PAGMI), Igbere TV reports.

This president launched this on Thursday, 16 July 20, via a virtually held event.

At the official launch of the development programme, the Central Bank of Nigeria paid a total sum of N268.6 million to purchase a 12.5kg gold bar, the Nigeria’s first artisanally-mined gold processed and refined according to LBMA standards.

The gold now belongs to our external reserve.

Below is the full details and everything you need to to know about the development programme;

SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS PAGMI?

The Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Development Initiative (“PAGMI”) is a comprehensive artisanal and small-scale gold mining development programme, launched in 2019 to foster the formalization and integration of artisanal gold mining activities into Nigeria’s legal, economic, and institutional framework.

PAGMI has been designed to integrate social, environmental, health and safety, economic, commercial, and technical considerations, into its implementation.

PAGMI is designed as a broader strategy to address the structural and institutional factors such as rural poverty, lack of alternative livelihoods, and difficulties in meeting legal and regulatory requirements that tend to push artisanal gold mining operators deeper into the informal economy.

BACKGROUND / CONTEXT:

Using data from UN Comtrade, PAGMI estimates that between 2012-2018, 97 tonnes of gold valued at over $3 billion was illegally smuggled out of Nigeria.

In addition to the economic sabotage, illegal artisanal mining has fueled instability and mercury and lead poisoning incidents across gold mining communities. Unregulated artisanal mining places a significant burden on fragile health systems. From 2010 to 2016, there were more than 7,000 incidences of lead poisoning, resulting in 700 deaths related to gold mining activities in Zamfara and Kebbi alone.

His Excellency, the President, approved PAGMI in 2019 to address these issues and foster the integration of artisanal gold mining into the formal system.

PAGMI seeks to tackle and resolve these longstanding issues, while also contributing to President Buhari’s vision to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty within a decade.

HOW WILL PAGMI WORK?

The catalyst for the integration is the provision of access to markets for the artisanal miners through a National Gold Purchase Program and the deployment of enhanced mining methods at artisanal and small-scale mining sites.

Providing better access to markets through the National Gold Purchase Programme is only the first step in a comprehensive artisanal and small-scale gold mining development strategy integrating social, environmental, health and safety, economic, commercial, and technical considerations.

PAGMI will deploy safer and more efficient mining and processing technologies across artisanal mining locations across the country, starting with Kebbi and Osun States as the Pilot States with intervention in Kaduna, Zamfara and Niger States to commence immediately after the Pilot.

Using a Centralized Offtake and Supply System supported by a Decentralized Aggregation and Production Network, PAGMI will buy all the gold produced by artisanal and small-scale miners and aggregated by licensed buying centers and aggregators for supply to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

WHICH STATES ARE BENEFITING FROM PAGMI?

The main gold producing belt with history of artisanal workings and exploration activities in Nigeria will benefit from PAGMI. Intervention at artisanal mining sites will take place Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Niger and Osun States with Kebbi and Osun States serving as Pilot States. PAGMI will also be setting up gold aggregation centers in addition to supporting licensed buying centers and aggregators with access to financing options, responsible sourcing mechanisms, management and technical expertise including improved testing and processing equipment.

WHAT WILL PAGMI ACHIEVE?

Jobs: PAGMI will result in the creation of over 500,000 new mining and formalized jobs, leading to poverty alleviation for more than 1 million households.

Wealth Creation: Under PAGMI, artisanal gold miners will earn more from higher productivity, better recovery rates, mechanization of operations, and better access to reliable geological information. Increased earnings for the miners will have significant spillover effects in the local economies as businesses will grow to cater to the increased consumption per household.

Identity Management: PAGMI will boost national identity management through the biometric registration of thousands of artisanal miners nationwide. About 20,000 miners have already been registered in Kebbi and Osun States. PAGMI will also help bring them into the formal financial sector.

Productivity and Capacity-Building: PAGMI will boost productivity and output in the gold mining sector, by deploying safer and more efficient mining and processing equipment and technologies across artisanal mining locations across the country.

Agreements have been reached with Thermo Fisher Scientific and Mettler Toledo, leading producers of gold testing and weight equipment to equip up to 50 buying centers across the country.

Revenues: PAGMI estimates that the Federal Government of Nigeria could realize an annual average of $150 Million in taxes, $25 Million in royalties, and $500 Million accretion to foreign reserves from the integration of artisanal gold mining activities implemented by PAGMI.

Reserves: PAGMI will allow the Central Bank of Nigeria to purchase locally produced gold in Naira to boost the nation’s foreign reserves.

Standards: PAGMI will ensure that responsible sourcing standards, as outlined in the OECD Due Diligence Guidance, are adhered to, and the gold bars delivered to the Central Bank of Nigeria are Responsibly-Sourced, and LBMA Certified.

Health, Safety and Environmental Benefits: From 2010 to 2016, there were more than 7,000 incidences of lead poisoning, resulting in 700 deaths, related to gold mining activities in Zamfara and Kebbi alone. The recorded lead levels, at 23,000 ppm, were more than 55x the maximum acceptable level for environmental lead levels (400 ppm). Effective implementation of PAGMI will help to control the use of lead, mercury, and cyanides. PAGMI will also improve the working condition of artisanal miners, thereby reducing the number of in-pit deaths that are seen on an annual basis.

Security: Illegal artisanal mining has fueled instability across gold mining regions with intelligence reports confirming a nexus between illicit gold mining and a rise in banditry. For the first time ever, formalization driven by access to markets will give the artisanal gold miners a guaranteed pathway to prosperity. The greater transparency that PAGMI confers on the flow of financing in the sector will help diminish the incentives for criminality.

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM PAGMI?

Artisanal and small-scale miners
Rural mining communities
Registered Buying Centers and Aggregators
Existing and potential investors in the gold mining sector
Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)
Federal and State Governments
Interesting Tidbit

PAGMI successfully separated and refined silver from the gold mined by the artisanal miners, thereby delivering additional value to them.

Politics / Democracy Day: Labor Of Heroes Past 'll Not Be In Vain - Prof. Ibe by drinoayo: 1:28pm On Jun 12, 2020
Prof. Gregory Ibe, Founder and Chancellor, Gregory University, Uturu, in Abia, has congratulated the government and people of Nigeria on the country’s 21st Democracy Day celebration.

Igbere TV reports that today, June 12 is marked as Democracy Day for the first time this year following the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to move the celebration to the anniversary of the annulled June 12 election in 1993 which had the late Moshood Abiola as winner of the presidential election.

In a statement made available to IGBERE TV on Thursday, the University don said;

“With mixed emotions of joy and sadness, I wish to felicitate with our fellow countrymen as we commemorate this year's democracy day.

“I am joyful simply because of our steadfastness in steering the rudder of civilian rule so far, slowly but steadily on the shore of democracy from 29th May 1999 till date. We may not have made tremendous socio-economic progress, but it is heartwarming that having set sail and subsequently gathered some momentum on this highly turbulent democratic voyage, we will surely arrive the Promised Land, if we faint not.

“On the other hand, my sadness stems from the unhealthy environment created by the COVID-19 pandemic around what would have been a colourful 21st anniversary of our uninterrupted democratic journey.

“It is therefore against the backdrop of the struggles, sacrifices and martyrdom of the highly celebrated heroes and heroines of our democracy that I urge my fellow countrymen to shun all forms of ethnicity, religious bigotry and other divisive tendencies, while completely recommitting themselves to the task of building a virile and prosperous nation that will be the envy of all.

“Consequently, let us mark this plagued anniversary in soberness of mind, responsibly abiding by all anti COVID 19 protocols, while resolving to ensure the performance of that line in our national anthem that says '...the labor of our heroes past shall not be in vain'.”

Politics / Kalu: NANS Hails Supreme Court, Says Good Triumphed Over Evil by drinoayo: 7:18pm On Jun 08, 2020
The National Association Of Nigerian Students (NANs), Abia State Axis has hailed the Supreme Court for nullifying the judgement of the lower court which sentenced the Chief whip of the Senate and senator representing Abia North at the red Chambers, H.E. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, to 12 years imprisonment on corruption charges, Igbere TV reports.

The students community under the leadership of Comrade Eme Orji Frank, also felicitated with Mr. Kalu describing his victory at the apex court as well deserved.

The congratulatory message by Comrade Frank, was conveyed in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Comr. Amusuo Cajetan Chukwudi, in Abia State on Monday.

Comrade Chukwudi quoted the NANS Zonal Rep as describing the victory of Senator Kalu at the Supreme Court as good triumphing over evil.

Reacting to the charges laid against the Abia State former governor, Comr Frank described the accusations as “acts of power driven individuals wanting to destroy the reputation of a good man and tarnish his political career forgetting power comes from God and as such, whom God has blessed, no one can curse as it is no news that the South East of the country expects the position of the presidency to be zoned to the region and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is among the credible candidates for the position.”

In the statement, Comrade Frank described Uzor Kalu as a man loved by the masses for his humility and liberality, who has the interest of his constituents at heart and ready to improve the country at large.

He prays for God's guidance and wisdom to carry out his duties while assuring the Senator of the undiluted support of the students community in Abia State to his office.

Igbere TV recall that the Supreme Court had on Friday, May 08, upturned the judgment convicting the former governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu.

In a unanimous verdict on the appeal delivered by Justice Ejembi Eko, the apex court declared that the conviction of the appellants was null and void.

Justice Eko said the judgement was nullified on the ground that Justice Mohammed Idris was already a Justice of the Court of Appeal at the time he delivered the judgment sentencing the appellants.

Eko said a Justice of the Court of Appeal cannot operate as a judge of the Federal High Court.

The former Governor of Abia was released from Abuja correctional centre following order of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on June 02 ordering his immediate release.

According to Oyinkri who spoke to TribuneOnline, trouble started on the evening of June 2nd, 2020, when he slapped her for raining insults on him because he came too early to meet her somewhere in town to pick up her mobile phone.

Explaining further, he said she called him from her office to meet her somewhere to pick up her phone by 8 pm for security purposes because she would be coming home late that evening but that when he closed from work about 6 pm, his boss dropped him off at the exact location she had asked him to meet her.

He said while hanging around until it is 8 pm, he suddenly saw his wife walking pass him about 7 pm, so he ran to her to notify her of his presence but instead she got angry that he came to early than they agreed.

He said “in shock, I then asked why is she angry that I came early. I also asked her why she didn’t tell me she would be coming early as well. That was when she started accusing me of monitoring her. She insulted me till we got home. I thought that we could settle the matter at home but it was hell.

“So out of anger, I gave her two warning slap and instructed her to go to the bedroom and sleep. At that point, a friend called me to come to his place for a private birthday party, and unfortunately, I came back home at about 1 am. So I was sleeping on the sofa in my living room when suddenly she bathed me with hot water.”

According to one of his siblings that resides with them “they had a quarrel in the morning of the June 3rd over domestic issues because she has been acting up lately. So on that day she kept nagging and insulting him over the matter to a point he couldn’t bear that he got angry and slapped her telling her to keep quiet, which she did, thinking the quarrel was over.

“After everything, he left and went to sleep, later she went to his sister asking her if there was kerosene in the stove. The sister told her that there was no kerosene. So she went out and bought kerosene to fill the Stove. Meanwhile, I thought it she boiled the water for bathing or to bake garri. I even notified her when the water started boiling.
