What are we supposed to do now? We are supposed to come out boldly and tell Nigerians that we are sorry . You gave us an opportunity to rule this country for 16 years but we allowed power to intoxicate us. We need to tell Nigerians that we disrespected your views , your voices did not matter to us , we apologise to you for betraying the trust reposed in us . We are telling you that if given another chance we will never go the path we plied before.
This man is sensible. In addition, if PDP can prevail on those who stole and took our money to return such funds, then we Nigerians will not be interested in PMB witch hunting them. We will tell him to let the sleeping dog lie.

Implement the oronsaye report. Rationalise the civil service. This will lead to a fall in aggregate demand in the economy and reduce the pressure on the naira. This will also correct inefficiencies with in the system.
Other measures such as removing quota system and replace it with a merit system.

The Federal government can also put pressure on the national assembly using the rmafc to reduce their incomes to levels when oil was selling at its current rate.

The civil and public servants consume majority of our oil earnings. The private sector then provides services for the civil and public servants.

These measures will have political costs. nigeria cannot afford to have a politician as a leader in these complex times.

Socialist and monarchy states cannot carryout measures as these because their political frameworks will collapse. The worst political thing that can happen in nigeria's case is that APC loses the next election.

The president needs to be a statesman above being a politician. He must protect the poorest in the society as against the middle and upper class.
As brilliant as your suggestions are, will they give the immediate results we earnestly need? Will they provide us the urgently needed cash?

This is good news if true.

I have said it before that deregulation of petrol business prevents Nigeria from making oil marketers billionaires with our scarce dollars. Increasing minimum wage will ensure that workers get the "subsidy" they were not getting from subsidized fuel. And once that is done, non-government workers will be able to get their own share from govt workers too.

I know you say inflation but we cannot avoid that natural situation with our current state of affairs. Impossible!

Irrespective of whatever went behind our backs, it was the right decision. And for the president to have succumbed, it means he was convinced. I trust him that much because I know he's not an IB.

The next thing is to provide palliatives and increase minimum wage to at least 40k.

PDP can go to hell with their worthless zoning!

I don't know what you guys find so special about the presidency. If after more than 40 years at the helm of affairs of this country the North still remains this backward, I would shudder with revulsion at the mention of 'President' and 'South East' in the same sentence. After 6 years, South South didn't really change that much. After 8 years Ibadan-Lagos expressway remained in a pathetic dire condition. What is really there in the presidency? Individual and worthless honour!

We don't need such favours in South East, what we want here is effective State governance and not a president who will have to bear the burden of the whole Nigeria. One more State for equal representation in the National Assembly, that's all.
Words of wisdom.

I think it is rather uncharitable for the writer to attempt to preempt the Southern Governors and leaders by saying they are going to defend the actions of the NDA.
But the governors have had more than enough time to condemn the criminals already but haven't done it.

Secondly, it takes a fairly obtuse person to lump the NDA with the boko haram and fulani herdsmen. One stark contrast is that the later two are murderers pure and simple. Every action they take is geared towards massive human casualty. Again, they have no identifiable cause other than greed and tribal/religious supremacy agenda which informs their modus operandi of killing the 'infidels' according to their kouran and doing so in the name of Allah (boko haram). For the herdsmen, they simply have a bad sense of entitlement hence the audacity with which they sack and take over communities, not without massive murder and pillaging.
Very weak defense! If after reading the article, you still argue this way, one has to wonder about your thought process. There is no single difference between BH, FH or rustlers and this terrorists called NDA and the writer has given enough reasons for that already. The militants are criminals fighting for their pocket and nothing else. Tompolo, Asari Dokubo, and many other past militants became millionaires through militancy while the people they claimed they were fighting for still live in abject poverty.

The NDA however are fighting for the soul and ownership of what is theirs and it is easy to see why unless a person is just plain daft and greedy. Nigerian leadership has proved itself as incapable of being reasoned with. Dialogue has been tried and engaged in over the issue of resource control and system of governance but always remains dead because some in power particularly the North do not want it. Having systematically empowered themselves with unfair majority representation at every level of government including the legislature, they make it clear that it is their way or no way! The most recent and inclusive effort to address these issues, the CONFAB has been relegated by the same North. History tells everyone what happened to Ken Saro Wiwa again at the hand of a Northerner.
No sensible being can justify criminal acts on failure of government to yield to militants demands. In as much as I support resource control, I remain unconvinced that it will achieve any desired result where 13% additional derivation has not translated to better living; where creation of Niger Delta Development Commission has not had significant impact; and where creation of Niger Delta ministry has not improved the region's condition.

Now, there is no one that knows or feels the effects of environmental degradation more than the Niger Delta indigenes. However, because the Nigerian govt is determined to feed off the South without commensurate recompense, the freedom fighters know to strike at the jugular which is crude oil. Rather than see economic sabotage which is the outcome of their actions, I see a people pushed to the wall, damned tired of being told they count for nothing because of the 'almighty North' and to crown it all, majority of stakeholders in the ownership of resources in the ND come from the same north.
Just as the writer of that article said, we all are losers in this. And as the people of NE that allowed BH to grow within their region are the biggest losers of the BH terrorism, the same way the ND communities allowing these NDA terrorists bomb oil pipelines and wells will turn out the biggest losers at the end. If I may ask, who have been suffering the past environmental pollution and degradation brought about by similar past sabotage?

The FG controlled by the North during the military era, by fiat packaged as a Constitution today commandeered the resources if the South as belonging to the FG. Fairness and equity should have seen the same happen to solid minerals scattered over the North and major agricultural resources should have also been controlled by the FG but no, just the South simply because it's easy money.
Does any northern state have absolute control of resources found in the state? You're obviously misinformed and misguided.

Now there are rumbles, rather than give due regard n respect to a region, the FG once again run by the north has chosen to play the role of bully by unleashing military action. Same response that boils down to killing innocent people because they're never precise enough to actually gather intelligence, identify and fish out their targets.
You can't engage in terrorist acts and expect the government to look on. Doing so will amount to giving in to cheap blackmail and terrorism. It's unfortunate that you guys are so misguided not to think of the unfortunate innocent people who will become collateral damage when the FG troops come calling.

The Nigerian government must learn to accord respect to each region in its own right and not by the number of votes cast in support of any govt in power. See the passion with which a whole President defends his kinsmen by saying no one should think of driving 'us' out because he is one of them but makes no attempt to understand the cause of the Niger Delta. Let me not even talk of IPOB and the right to self-determination now. So remind me again why unity is a do or die affair in Nigeria? How exactly is Nigeria one other than having no other country bearing the same name?
I am a proponent of separation. I will love us (Yorubas) to separate from largely uneducated and nomadic north; from largely boastful, bullying and hateful SE; and from largely lazy and natural resource dependent SS. However, in the absence of peaceful separation, I will never support any violent action to achieve secession. Why not call your reps/senators, your governors and other leaders and make them take legitimate steps towards achieving your desire separation?

Genrally, your reasoning is childish and warped. Let me remind you of this saying: "A child that laughs at his father's rotten yams is laughing at the hunger that will strike him in due course".

Dropshot

I admire the non-sentimental and objective reasoning behind your post. You argued logically with infallible proofs.

I am also of the opinion that the removal of subsidy in 2012 would have been suicidal because the excess funds would still have been looted, no capital projects implemented and we would still pay through our noses for the fuel and other basic needs that would skyrocket in prices.

In fact, we would be paying as much as 150 for fuel coz it would still have increased more

But with a president, even though slow at making decisions, but frowns at corrupt practices, this is the perfect time to remove fuel subsidy. Even though the heart of man can not be trusted, but its is like that the accruing funds would be diverted into other profitable ventures.

My concern, however, is in 2-fold.

First, relevant representatives of the people (if not even a direct interaction with the people themslves) should have been extensively consulted to decide on the particular price to peg the price of fuel. Afterall, the bulk buyers and recipients of the resultant change in prices of goods and sevices are the masses.

I am of the opinion that 145naira – an 80% - increment is too high. 100-110naira would have been bearable.

Secondly, our people say that you can not beat a child and tell him not to cry. That would amount to being heartless. Knowing the cascading effect of the hike in fuel price, the government should have moved to first increase the salaries of workers so as to increase their purchasing power. That way, some money would circulate instead of being in the hands of a few.

May God give us leaders that love us and have our best interest at heart
I perfectly agree on the two points you raised.

There should have been more robust discussion to sensitize and make people key into it before doing it. However, we wouldn't know why they didn't do that.

Of course, increasing workers salary must happen alongside this new price regime. Without it, the increase will be killing and perhaps too difficult to bear for citizens. I want to believe the FG will eventually do that but wanted to be sure to have the new price regime in place first.

Lastly, I still trust this administration to not only provide palliatives but to also deliver on his capital projects which will provide stimulus for the economy. The next two years will reveal much more.
