Fear and respect do most definitely not serve the same purpose and the endgoal is not the same, though, the Nigerian mentality is prone to think they do due to their use in archaic religious texts and our inability to evolve and update.

Fear is for something one is afraid of, like a snake or a God that would burn one in hell or a tyrannical parent or someone pointing a gun at one.

Respect is for someone one reveres and holds in high regard, like a loving parent or a good wife or one's friend or even one's child.

A person feared is not exemplary. And once they lose what makes them fearful (i.e. their gun), they usually become unfeared and disrespected. While a person is respected usually because of something exemplary (a good or desirable quality) that they may possess.

Fear is used to acquire respect.

Case study: Adolf Hitler, Idi Amin and Osama Bin Laden.

Now, if you agree to the initial postulation, you'd consider/support the case study and vice versa.

On the other hand, respect, as you rightly said, is earned as a result of an admirable quality (which is mostly innate and not easily disposed of).

So, my drive?

A person who's respected earns the unbridled loyalty of the admirer while a person who's feared enjoys similar allegiance.

Significantly also, the two feelings (fear and respect) provide both the respected and the feared some relevance.

This leaves the only difference to be the means of acquisition, nothing else.

@bolded
Most times it doesn't flow naturally. . We become slaves to it, based on obligation as a slave that we are. . (Please I might be seeing this from another pespective)

Please kindly enlighten me on the difference between respect and fear

Budaatum please I need your insight too

Respect is earned and fear, enforced.

Nonetheless, they both serve a singular endgoal: to create a god-like expression and appear exemplary.

Then bowing shouldn't necessary be a skill even though one still have learn to bow depending on cultural etiquette

Exactly.

Bowing is not a skill, per se. It's a follow-up reaction that comes with the virtue of humility.

You bow to show humility; you bow to show submission, also.

That is, in general, bowing– as a mode of response– flows naturally when your heart is in a state of meekness. You don't have to learn it.

I do not possess bowing skills

But is there any similarity between bowing and humility

Yes, and no.

Bowing is a by product, not exactly humility itself.

Meaning, you bow to show respect, which in itself is a core condiment of humility.

No.

I can't say I quite get what you are saying. The task in question was one of enquiry, and bowing would not in any way have constituted adequate performance of the task.

The individual was hired to show his skills, and bowing, to the best of my knowledge, was not a skill the individual intended to show. Though he may correct me if I'm wrong.

Az, was bowing one of your skills?

Oooow... Okay, I think I get the point.

I erred in my explanation, in that I was only explaining the monk's situation in the paradigm you provided.

I had no intention to support or interpret Az's ordeal.

You are going to have to explain to me how the above constitutes bowing please. Because, as far as I understand, bowing is not the way of the Buddha who's teaching is more like, get off your lazy ass and do the fuqing work to ask and knock and seek, a la pick up your cross and bear it.

Ref

Bowing doesn't mean weakness, or the laziness of the mind that sizzles out our resolve into unwarranted submission– no.

It also doesn't mean the homework of inquiry wasn't done.

Alas! In this context, it was, even effectively. Therefore, bowing was merely (supposed to be, and most suitably) a response to the answer given.

Bowing, in the case of this student, also signifies self-control and an understanding of Buddha's teaching on humility.

Again, the most suitable answer for any case scenario.

Thank you for the ref.

Now, I'll point it out in two parts. And to do so, I'll like to reel in a verse from the holy bible to further buttress my point.

Luke 6:39

Whoever strikes you on the cheek, offer him the other one also [simply ignore insignificant insults or losses and do not bother to retaliate—maintain your dignity]. Whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either.

Here, Jesus Christ talks about submission and self-control. (Note that the latter is a parchment of the core teachings of the Buddha).

Now, bowing– especially after being smacked and shoved– shows total liberation from the shackles of the conventional mortal mind and it's tendency to misconstrue intention.

Meaning: you take the path of enlightened in that you do not translate the act to mean harmful, or anything sinister. You obviously are at a place where you interpret and react to actions only from your standpoint nonviolence and peace.

It is the perfect example of a big step on the journey to Nirvana: understanding that nothing is as it really is and losing attachment to the world.

Ref: see image (number 2).

Explain please, how bowing would have gotten his answer.

Self-mastery, I suppose.

The uncommon prevalence of logic and discernment over emotions and first reactions.

These form the tenets of Buddha's teaching, right– that one may rise above the fetters of the mortal will to react first, and think later?

In bowing, he would understandably have shown great restraint, prime knowledge of nonviolence and untainted humility.

And these would have provided him the answers to his question, Imho.

No one needed to bow. Bowing was not given as a task!

However, Bowing was the needed expression.

In bowing, he would have gotten his answer.
