Both of them were the problem in the midfield. They couldn't provide passing option for the midfield nor could control the midfield with the possession they had.

I have always known that if Ivory with the new included Seri could control Senegal and Mali midfield, then they would do worse to Nigeria 's average midfield.

My reason for Onyedika and Aribo midfield combo was Onyedika is a defensive holding midfielder who's good at providing a passing option for the defence while Aribo is technically adept, as well as quite energetic. Wasn't Aribo fantastic for Nigeria in the last afcon? He was fantastic as aCM at the last afcon. So partnering Onyedika, a holding midfielder with Aribo could have probably helped to control the Midfield.

Onyeka is more like a defensive 8 while Iwobi is a no 10, not a CM even though he's not as creative as the usual no 10.

That being said, the referee was biased. He was always pandering to the host.

Anyways, it was a good outing for Nigeria. When Nigeria lost against Guinea just before the tournament, I was expecting Nigeria to be lashed in the tournament but the coach changed a lot of the lineup before the first match and that helped. The midfield was still lacking though. The coach could have probably persisted with Onyedika even if Onyedika was part of the lineup that lost to Guinea before the tournament, just like he persisted with Zaidu, Ekong and Chukwueze. He should have Just bring in Aribo to partner with Onyedika in the midfield. Anyways, good outing overall.

Seri and Haller was their magic to the reason why Ivory overturn their bad performance. Seri isn't energetic but controls that midfield until towards the end when he would be subbed out for penalty takers in case of penalty. That was who how Ivory defeated Senegal.

Nigeria midfield was never good enough which I have always pointed out. It was the defence and forwards doing it most of the time. Apart from the lack of energy in the
middfeld, there's the lack creativity and lack of control in the midfield.

The coach Left the Midfield too late. The midfield wasn't doing much controlling of the midfield nor creating much for the forwards.

Anyways, The wing forwards could try unsettling the Ivory midfielders opposite
them and ivory defence, especially the fullbacks by constantly pressing them. If they're not getting much chances from Nigeria midfield, they could try pressing to make them cough up possession. While Osimhen press the central defence. I would have said Iwobi should press Seri but he was likely to do that.. Now that he's subbed out, someone should press Seri, he's the one who controls the midfield.

If Zaidu isn't fit, Omeruo should come in as a CB while Bassey moves to the left wingback. While Ola Aina was solid on the left in the last match, he couldn't join much of the attack. Besides, he's fully at his best on the right, considering he's right footed.

On the midfield? Iwobi and Onyeka could continue in the midfield but if they're struggling in the first half for example, then the combo of Onyedika and Aribo could come in.

Personally, I didn't think Nigeria would do well in the tournament. I remembered laughing when Oshoala was banking on the squad. Lol. However they have surprised me though 😂

Anyways, my take is Chukwueze shouldn't be used as a replacement for Simon... Iheanacho or Moffi could be used as the replacement.

In fact, the coach should also take a pointer from the team that lost against Guinea before the tournament. Hence, he shouldn't make the mistake of filling the team with the lots of the players that lost against Guinea. However, he can use some of them but when it starts to look like the whole team are looking similar to the whole lineup that lost against Guinea, then he should be watchful. In fact, I thought Nigeria would disappoint in the afcon tournament after the loss against Guinea.

Secondly, Aina should play as the right wingback and Bassey as the left wingback if Zaidu isn't in the team while Omeruo comes in as a central back. Aina is right footed, so playing him as the right wingback would enable him to cross with his right foot at least while left footed Bassey crosses with his left foot. Aina as the right wingback and Bassey as the left wingback was what Nigeria had in the second half against Cameroon for example which ended in 2-0 win. If not Bassey as left wingback, then Zaidu should be used as the left wingback.

As I said, Aina should be moved to the right wingback so he could at least cross with his right foot while Bassey operate on the left wingback with his left foot crossing too. That was what led to the goal against Cameroon. Even the Lookman that scored those goals have been removed. If naija lose, the coach was the one who undo his own good work.

Omeruo should come in for Osayi while Aina moves to the Right wingback with Bassey as left wingback. That was what Nigeria had in the second half against Cameroon in the 2-0 win.
